Drive plays DVDs but not commercial CDs

MBP 15" from ~2008. Today, my wife's MBP won't play any commercial CD's we've tried but it does play a home-made DVD video our son made for a school project. Does it use different lenses for reading CD v DVD & could the CD lens be dirty/etc? Or is it a sign of impending failure/death of the drive? How do cleaning discs work & are they safe?
Thanks.

Is there an extended warrenty or no? You might have to poke around and get a sense of your options. Here is a start:

My 2009 iMac will play DVDs but not CDs (bought music CDs and burnt CDs). The last time I tried (successfully) was December 2013. Can anyone help?

Start a new topic and don't hijack this one.  You're problem is different from the OPs. When you start the new topic give your system version, iMac year and model and what type of CDs you can't read, i.e. commercial or those you created yourself.  Also if you can read DVDs.

  • Imac G5 Play Dvd but Not Cd

I have a Imac G5 with a superdrive and if will play DVD but not CD. Anyway i can fix this?

Two ways that might fix it (the superdrive uses different lasers for CDs and DVDs):
    1. Clean the superdrive with a proprietary lens cleaner that uses tiny brushes.
    2. Reset the SMU:

  • HP Pavilion DV7 2206TX - DVD drive reads DVDs but not CD's

My HP Pavilion DV7 2206TX - DVD drive reads DVDs but not CD's.
When I insert a CD, the drive tries very hard to read the CD but gives up after about a minute.
I get no error message.  I do not see the Auto play message.
Windows Explorer does not recognize the DVD drive.
When I insert a DVD, I get the Autoplay menu, Windows Explorer recognize the drive and the DVD. I can play the DVD using any number of Video players.
I would welcome advice relating this problem.

your HP Pavilion needs a new DVD driver. I ran into many problems such as this when troubleshooting computers in school.
A DVD drive should play CD at any time:  While a CD driver will not play a DVD disc. Do not think there is a problem with sofware because it will only throw your troubleshooting skills  out the window and it will confuse you.

  • Drive reading DVDs but not CDs

My disc drive does not read ANY CDs but does read DVDs. I dont feel that it is 'broken' in the normal sense as it still instantly recognizes my DVDs but for CDs it eats it, spins it three times, and spits it back out. is this a problem I can fix with a software update or with an easy fix in some options menu? thanks in advance for any help

That is too funny. I've just blew some air in the optical drive with that http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Giottos-Rocket-Air-Blower-Review.aspx and it is working now! : )

  • EMac plays DVDs but not CDs

All of a sudden my 2nd hand eMac (G4 (3.3) 1GHz 1GB RAM) has stopped accepting CDs. When I insert either a music CD or a blank disk it sounds as if the Mac is trying to access whats on it but then spits it out.
This started a few days ago when the sound quality started to go in the middle of a Megadeth disk (no comments please!).
It does still accept and play DVDs perfectly well.
I've tried a number of things: repair permissions; resetting pram and nvram etc. I can't clean it because the same thing happens with the cleaning CD!
Any help or suggestions gratefully received.
    cheers,
    Steven

    hi steven-
i would try a number of things before purchasing an external burner. first try booting to open firmware by holding apple-option-o-f and type in the following commands--
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the second command restarts the computer. even though part of the firmware would have been reset by your prior troubleshooting, this is more extensive. as well, try resetting the pmu. instructions are located in step 6 of this article. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=34885 your emac is a later model than this, and the button is located on the right, not the left side. another thing you could do is booting to the install disk and running disk repair. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 make sure it is the install disk for the current operating system. let me know if any of this makes any difference. good luck. • 20" iMac will read/play dvds but spits out cds and games

I have a 20" intel iMac 2.0GHz (old model) with isight, 1gb ram, 160gb hd, and a superdrive of course. It has been an awesome machine until just tonight I was going to import a cd into itunes and the you can hear the drive spinning the disc 4 or 5 times like it wants to read it and then it just spits it out. This also happens with the Sims 2 on the Windows partition under Boot Camp. I have never had this problem before until now and I AM HOPING AND PRAYING I DON'T HAVE TO SEND TO APPLE FOR WORK. I have had this machine under a year so it is still under warranty. I should also mention that I have tried - 1. resetting the PRAM, 2. rebooting in Safe Mode, and 3. verifying and repairing disk permissions - all to no avail. Please please please help anyone. Thanks!!

    Richard:
I've been using an OWC Mercury DVD/CD external burner. It's actually a Pioneer unit in their case. It costs $99.00 and has FW/USB2.0 capability.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
I bought it because I didn't want to go through the hassle and expense I had when my 17" Powerbook Super Drive went out. It cost me about $400 to have it replaced by Apple. When I got my 24" iMac, I decided I wasn't going to go through that again. Anyway, the external unit worked great until I upgraded to 10.5.2. It still read and burned DVDs and burned CDs but it couldn't read CDs. OWC had me send it back to them for repair/replacement. ( I just sent it last week so I haven't gotten a status report from them yet). Then I found this discussion group which makes me wonder what is the problem. OWC is great about making things right. I've ordered several items from them and have been very pleased with their products and support. I tried an Iomega CD burner with my iMac and it burns fine from an iTunes playlist, but does not show CDs on the desktop when I insert a commercial disk. I just get a message that the computer can't read this disk, - the same as I got on my other external drive even though I just burned the disc successfully using that drive!

  • Is it possible for my dvd player to be able to play dvds but not burn them anymore?

So my dvd player will play movies but it will not let me burn them anymore. I didn't even think this was possible? Do I need to just replace it or is there a way to actually get it to burn again?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Probably the SuperDrive is damaged, if it doesn't allow you to burn DVDs. You have two possibilities:
    1. Take the computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get a new SuperDrive.
    2. Buy an external optical drive for your iMac

  • Superdrive starts playing DVDs but spits out CDs.

When I put a DVD in my superdrive it plays. When I insert a commercial CD or blank CD-R it spins a few times and ejects. This just started today.
    My system profiler reads...
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110D:
    Firmware Revision: AA06
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2000 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
    Media: No

WWJD. The cleaner has two sets of brushes so I believe it's for both CD and DVD. I read a suggestion to log in as another user so I'll try that when I get home. It's starting to look like a hardware problem so I may have to take it in for repair. Good thing I'm still in the one year warranty period.

  • DVD Player plays DVDs but will not play VIDEO_TS files from my hard drive

When logged into my home account DVD Player plays DVDs but will not play VIDEO_TS files that are on my hard drive. I get an error message: "there was a problem opening the media. Media type is not supported." When logged in as "root" DVD player does play these same files. Also, when logged in to my home account, I can play these same files in VLC.

Go this this thread for more details:

But the gist of the fix is to delete or rename "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist" and let the DVD Player build a new one. It seems that this is caused by a migrated PPC preference that borks DVD Player 5 on Intel Macs, which is what just happened to me. Hope this helps.

  • Will read DVDs but not CDs

I have a satellite a305-s6872 that will read dvds but not cds.  It was reading cds the last time I tried (October) but now it's not.  This means that I can't play or burn cds.  It also means that I can't install any programs that come on a cd.  Please help!

I have the same problem. It reads DVDs, and rejects CDs, even perfect/new CDs.
Apple Support told me there will soon be a software update (in a week?) to fix this problem, but I am not convinced.

  • Some songs, which are bought in the iTunes store, will be played iTunes but not on my iPod touch. Has somebody an explanation for that? Thanks,

Some songs, which are bought in the iTunes store, will be played iTunes but not on my iPod touch. Has somebody an explanation for that? Thanks,

No, you should have Restrictions OFF.
Computer's iTunes > Preferences > Parental Preferences > everything should be unchecked.
Are the songs also on computer's iTunes?

  • After updating iOS on my iPod touch 4th gen my Philips speaker dock DC290B/37 no longer charges the iPod.  It will play music but not charge, is there anyway to find out if Apple is working on an update/fix?

after updating iOS on my iPod touch 4th gen my Philips speaker dock DC290B/37 no longer charges the iPod.  It will play music but not charge, is there anyway to find out if Apple is working on an update/fix?

    Try:
    - Reset the dock
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
Otherwise you are out of luck. Apple is not making any more update for the 4G.
Also check with Phillips. Maybe they have an firmware update available

  • Flash Video plays locally, but not on web

I have a htm page that I have inserted a Flash Video. It
plays locally, but not when I have it on the web. I get nothing -
no skins, nothing. If I rt click, there are the settings for flash.
I have the scripts in my scripts folder - double checked that. Can
anyone see what I'm doing wrong?

    right off the top ..
You have two script calls to the Scripts folder and file ..
    one is root
relative and the other goes up one level. One of them needs
    to be removed.
