DRIVE rejects every cd/dvd!

Hi All,
I recently had my Powerbook start rejecting all discs. I insert the disc, it appears to be trying to read it.. and then it ejects it. It never appears on the desktop or anything...
Any help out there?

Fair enough, and I appreciate the info; I will only purchase quality discs in the future. For software, I use Toast Titanium 8.0. I re-ran a simple burn and got the following errors:
"The drive reported an error:
Sense key = HARDWARE ERROR
Sense Code = 0x09, 0x09
TRACK FOLLOWING ERROR"
"The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code = 0x73, 0x04"
"The disc failed to be written."
The drive will now not accept the same "blank" DVD, and has subsequently spit out other blanks.
One thing I did fail to mention is that I switched btwn US and European DVD codes this summer, but switched back at the end of the summer. Could this have a lingering effect? As I recall, this problem occurred before the summer anyways. Cheers.

Thanks.  No, it was from an old BBC television series.  But maybe I jumped the gun.  It has now (first DVDs after new installation of disc drive) rejected three (an old Japanese movie, the American TV series Beautiful People) and accepted three (a BBC TV series, and 2 old English movies) - all of these are from the local library.

It needed a replacement optical drive installing. The problem often relates to the eject mechanism.
You could try cleaning the drive.

  • My macbook is rejecting the blank DVD-R

Trying to copy bunch of photos from iPhoto to DVD - the macbook is rejecting a blank DVD-R - does that mean I need to use DVD+R?

It should handle DVD-R but to check, select the Apple menu and then About this Mac then click on the System Report button. Along the left side of the window that pops up look for Disc Burning and it will show you the media your drive can handle. You should see -R listed.
Assuming that it is, there are a couple reasons the disc might be ejected. The disc might unacceptable for another reason, it is dirty or damaged for example. Cheap media can go bad pretty rapidly which is why I stopped buying large spindles of DVDs. Your drive might be damaged - it has one laser for CDs and another for DVDs. Also the drive lens might be dirty. There are lots of drive cleaning kits - consider them one use only items though because having cleaned one drive it is possible for the dirty 'cleaner' to pass the dirt on to another lens.

  • Random Rejections of CD/DVDs

I saw the other thread re: some issues with the DVD drive rejecting CD's or DVD's. However, I don't know that my issue quite fits with what others are experiencing. My issue is random. Sometimes, my DVD/CD drive (specs below) runs just as normal. Put a new CD or DVD in, tell it what you want it to burn, it burns it. Other times, not. There is clicking as it tries to read the media, then eventually it spits it out. I've shell out for the good CD's--no need to waste money on false burns--and have even tried different brands, but the results are the same.
And again, they're intermittent. The same CD the drive spits out one day, unable to read it, is perfectly fine the next day--everything burns, the data is intact. No problems. Likewise, CD's that I've used without issue will be problematic one day when the drive tries to read them, then another day, no issues at all.
Any ideas? I think my drive is different than the one that most others are experiencing problems with.

  • Mac mini rejects any cd/dvd but...

My Mac mini (early 2009) rejects any cd/dvd but it does work flawlessly when I log in with a new user account called TEST with admin rights. How can I make it work on my personal profile? I have reinstalled the OS X three times without any result. Running OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

Hello, have you ever inserted a Sony Movie DVD?
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Satellite A40-151 DVD drive will not play DVDs

hi my dvd drive will play music cd's but when i try to play a dvd it just makes a beep and nothing happens i tried windvd and it comes on but everything is blurred and still wont play a dvd

    Hello John
Please dont be mad on me but in your posting there is no question or something just small report that DVD drive will not play DVDs.
Anyway, if I am remembering well your unit is about 2 years old and has probably DVD-CDRW (Combo) drive. In my opinion there is no much to do. If the drive has problem with original DVDs I presume that there is laser calibrations problem and the device must be replaced.
I dont know how old is your unit exactly but please check if the warranty is still valid. If yes contact service partner in your country immediately. The drive should be replaced for free. If not you must replaced it on your own. If the drive replacement costs too much I recommend you to use external device (I do it with my old Satellite). On this way I can use newest and very fast super multi DL devices and also create own DVDs.
You can also try to find already used DVD/CD-RW drive and replace it alone. If you need assistance by replacement please write again.
Once again, dont be mad on me. I am ready to write my opinion but it is really annoying when someone write just one sentence and nothing more.
    Good luck!

No. You have no alternative but to plug it into a computer running iTunes and restore it.

This is a very common problem.  Some are beacuse of the quality of media, some are because of the speed the media is burnt, some are because the drive gets dirty just where DVDs are concerned, and some are because of computer age.  The last problem is common if the machine gets more than 4 years old, the PRAM battery needs replacing, and all sorts of settings start malfunctioning, until lastly the system clock no longer works and it might not boot.  The others, see my FAQ*:

  • Mac mini + G5 + FW drive to play back DVDs

ok follow me on this one...
I have a G5 Quad with a 1TB FW drive which contains my DVD collection
If I get a Mac mini, can I:
1 - connect the Mac mini to playback my DVDs on my tv?
2 - can the Mac mini connect via Airport to the FW-HD to access my DVD collection?
Has anyone done this before? (have spent the last hour unsuccessfully trying to find an answer in the various forums)

If I get a Mac mini, can I:
1 - connect the Mac mini to playback my DVDs on my
    tv?
2 - can the Mac mini connect via Airport to the FW-HD
    to access my DVD collection?
The answer to both is a tentative yes. You can, for example, use airport on the mini to connect to the G5, either directly in ad-hoc mode or via a wireless access point/router/home network and access the external FW drive. The mini would mount that drive on the desktop, and DVD Player could be directed to open your stored DVD collection if indeed it is saved in native DVD format. If ripped and converted, an appropriate playback application would be needed on the mini, such as Front Row, QuickTime Player, or even iTunes.
The tentative part is that while the transfer rate of Airport ought to be good enough to stream a DVD in native format, you would need to ensure minimal noise and interference, and consistently good signal strength, since even a brief outage caused by local devices such as cordless phones or microwaves would be capable of disrupting playback. Streaming QT files is easier of course because there is a lower data rate involved and thus Airport would prove more robust.
