Drive seemingly unable to read disks

Forgive me if this has been address before...
Shortly ago, I tried to burn a CD when iTunes told me to insert a blank disk (despite it being blank already.) On my 4th attempt (and 4th blank CD) the drive began this low buzz/hum almost rattle. Would make this sound 3 times and then spit the CD back out. I've tried with a regular CD (not blank) and get the same results. I tried it with a game CD that I had just ejected to burn the CD, which was working fine last night, and I managed to get it to recognize the disk once but only after it made a scratching whirring noise.
What could be the issue? Will I just have to take it in?

Optical drive replacement is best left to a technician. I hope you're still under warranty and I recommend you take it in to be looked at.

  • Iomega ZIP drive-constantly unable to read disks when using on both PC&Mac

I'm constantly having problems with Iomega ZIP disks:
-can't be read by PC or MAC
    -needs reformatting
I have to erase the disk using disk utitlities and make sure its FAT 32 (not 16) for the PC to read it.
However this is only temporary as the disk will again become unreadable by both machines.
Is this because i'm constantly using is on both machines?
Does anyone else have this problem?
    Any solutions?
This appears to have started since the last major OS X upgrade - i.e 10.3 to 10.4.
    Cheers

You may not want to hear this - but the best thing to do is to get anything that matters off Zip disks, and never touch them again. They're inherently unreliable, and you're much better off using CD-R or DVD-R.

  • Unable to read disk?

why do I keep getting an error message telling me I can't download movies from itunes because it is unable to read disk?

Did you change your media location or used a external hard drive to store your media, if not then try repairing your hard drive with disk utility also repair your permissions.

  • Satellite M40X-184's DVD/CD-RW drive unable to read CDs

I have a three month old Satellite M40X-184 with Mat****a UJDA760 DVD/CD-RW drive. Last few days the optical drive is unable to read any type of CDs. But it can read DVDs. Can somebody please tell me what's wrong with it? Is the drive broken? Is it necessary to replace the DVD/CD-RW with a new drive? Thanks.

    Hi
It is not easy to say if the drive is defective but you should anyway contact your local dealer. The warranty is valid and if there is some technical problem the drive will be replaced.
I dont know if this can help but you can try to remove the drive from device manager and restart the unit. The drive will be recognized and installed properly. If there is the problem with original music CDs you should really contact the local dealer.
Before the unit will be checked I believe that the best way to check it properly is to preinstall the unit with recovery media. The same thing will be done by technicians before hardware replacement. If you want you can do it too.

Click on the hard drive on the desktop, then File > Get Info. What does it say about permissions?  If this is just a data drive you may want to consider "ignore ownership on this volume".
Otherwise I can only say I have not been reading good things about Seagate drives recently.  I have some of their rock-solid ones from about 10 years ago (still running well), but now...?

  • HT3275 I continue to get the following error message: Unable to complete back up.an error occurred while creating backup folder. It's a brand new drive. When I attempt to repair it using disk utility I get:unable to repair disk cannot unmounted

I have been trying to use time machine on a new lacie 2tb usb 2 drive for back up. I continue to get: "unable to complete backup. An error occured while creating backup folder". When I use disk utility to repair I get another error message: unable to repair disk unmountable.
Help me Obie One Canobie you are my last hope

I have confused myself with the facts!  Started out keeping track of every step and every variable but have sort of lost it as we progress here.  First I quit all applications then swapped connections between mouse port and backup disk port to influence possible bad connections question.  Changed power outlet receptacle for the backup disk. Disabled the put-the-HD-to-sleep option.  Then powered down the computerator.
Next started up computerator.  Turned Time Machine ON  and experienced multiple successful backups!  Then I started up a few applications, Mail and Text Edit (but not Safari so far).  Had a few more successes.  After each backup, I used Disk Utility to verify the backup disk is still OK.  This because the error about unable to unmount the backup disk seems to go hand in hand with Disk Utility finding the backup disk to be bad.
Put computer to sleep for the night.  Upon starting up in the morning, and before doing anything else, I did a backup disk verification... BAD!   Did a restart and verified the backup disk... OK.
Did a few    Sleep-bad, Restart -OK    repetitions.
It seems consistent:  Sleeping the computer apparently messes up the backup disk but doing a Restart "repairs" it.
    =============================
Now then, I don't understand everything I know here.  Methinks that maybe keeping the HD from sleeping during lulls in activity has allowed successful backups through the day but manually putting everything to sleep for the night causes a return to the problem of spinning-back-up-too-slowly (which was explained earlier).  Is there any truth in this?
I may abandon this Seagate thing for something more compatible.  What's out there that we know works reliably for us?

  • Optical drive no longer reads disks, Optical drive no longer reads disks

Hi folks, never really had a terrible problem with this computuer until the last few months with the battery wearing out and having to replace the charging cord twice but now it seems like I have a problem here.
Earlier today, less than an hour ago, i burned a CD for my buddy, when i went to burn the second disk, it didnt want to accept it.  Finally, when it did, it wouldnt read I had a disk in it.  When i got home, i tried other cds/dvds and it wouldnt read them either.  It was making a rather bad sound, kind of like an alarm sound.  The CD will not spin and is ejeceted shortly after.
I was planning on bootcamping my Macbook Pro later this weekend, but if i can not get this to work, I wont be able to.  I dont think i have Apple Care and the nearest apple store is about a 2 hour drive from my house.

  • Equium L300 CD/DVD Drive no longer reads disks

There is already a thread with a similar problem to this with a different model, but it seems to have died.
The CD/DVD drive on my Equium L300-148 now refuses to read disks. It seems to burn them still, which is strange.
That must mean the laser has not burnt out, and the drivers seem to be working correctly.
I can see the drive in Explorer and I can eject it with the context menu.
I have tried a "Disable" then "Enable" in the Device Manager, but I have not tried uninstalling the drive then restarting.
    Any help would be apreciated.

    Hello
To make things clear: there are no much options you can try. You can try to remove optical disc drive from device manager and restart the notebook. The drive will be recognized automatically and the drive will be ready for use.
Can you tell us more about this issue?
Which formats you have tried to open? DVD movies, music CDs, different data files?
    Is there some error message?
If you don't have external HDD you can save all important data onto empty DVD medias.
Of course the best way to check functionality is to set factory settings again, but if you don't want to do this it makes things more complicated.
What you can do is to contact nearest service provider. They can install recovery image on separate HDD and test the functionality. If there is some serious problem the drive will be replaced for free (if the warranty is still valid).

Can a use a partitioned external hard drive to create a disk image? I tried, doesn't seem to work using disk manager.

OK, it's very bad computing to use a backup disk for anything but a backup. The reason being is if/when the HD crashes you will have lost not only all your backup but the data files. While I commend you for wanting redundant backup, you really need separate EHDs for doing so. Format each EHD using Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using the GUID parttition. When you connect, OS X will ask if you want to use that drive as a Time Machine backup drive, select yes and then let it backup. On the second EHD format the same way however do not use TM as a backup, this time I'd suggest an app such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of the internal HD. Leave both EHDs connected and TM will backup new or changed files automatically on a hourly basis. The clone you will need to set to backup on the schedule you want. For example I have my SuperDuper EHD set to backup only changed or updated files at 2AM every day.
The advantage of a clone is that if the computers internal HD crashes you can boot from a clone and continue working, TM will not do that but it's great for keeping an archive of all files. So if you want a version of a file from many months ago, TM will help you locate and restore it.

  • «Unable to read Drive...»

Hi, I'm having a weird recurring problem - I have an external FireWire400 LaCie D2 drive that's been working fine for 2 years but now, about once a week, I get an error message upon startup that says «Unable to read Drive...»
I have to repair permissions using Disk Utility and it will work fine ... for a week, and then it happens again.
I can't link the bug to any system upgrade, so does this mean my drive is showing its age, about to die on me or is just in need of a reformat?
Being an external drive, I can't confirm via the SMART Status in Disk Utility ...
    Thanks for your input ...

But trying to see down the road, if the problem reoccurs, I guess it means there is something physically wrong with the drive, right?
You got that right. Take a look at my Firewire conundrum FAQ below. You may not need to erase at all. Resetting the Firewire bus may help.

  • 911... Unable to unmount disk! My external drive is 499G, the available space is 73G and it's empty!

    Hello dear support community,
It all started when few weeks ago I plugged my external drive and nothing from the data would open. Then I got mad and never used it again. Now few days ago, when I plugged it into my Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10 it just went crazy! The full capacity is 499G. I go to "get info" and the available capacity is 73 and the external drive is empty. I have movies and videos of the capacity of 425G. Where did all that information go? I am sure I did not delete any of its content. I even copied the disk on my desktop but I can't open it either. It tell me: "you don't have the permission to see its content" And Also why when I go to "disk utility" to erase or repair the external disk, it shows me "unable to unmount disk" I would like to know what I shall do please! The Files are empty and I want to be able to recover my data and use the disk like I used to. Oh by the way, when I clicked in verify, it told me: "disk needs to be repaired" and that didn't work either.
    Thank you for kindly help!
    Regards!

Restart. That should free whatever it's showing as an open file.

  • Disk Utility says: "Unable to read FAT (Input/output error)"

I have a Western Digital Passport external hard drive factory formatted as FAT32. It worked as advertised for over half a year before it suddenly stopped working and refuses to mount on the desktop (it is visible in /dev). No odd sounds and the disk or other problems, a different USB cable makes no difference.
The disk shows up as an empty disk in Windows 7 even though it is supposed to contain a small iTunes library. I have tried to repair the disk in Disk Utility in OS X 10.6.4. This is the latest attempt to repair the disk, copied from the log:
    2010-08-10 15:58:44 +0200: ** /dev/disk2s1 (NO WRITE)

    2010-08-10 15:58:44 +0200: Unable to read FAT (Input/output error)
Does anyone have any recommendation on repair/recovery applications? I own a copy of DIskWarrior already but DW is a HFS-olny repair app…

  • Unable to read task sequence configuration disk

Target Server is an HP ProLiant BL460c G5
I'm trying to load my reference iso via the iLO connection, mounting the image to the CD drive.  I used the same process to create the WIM file on my Source Server and it worked fine.  I boot from the CD, it loads windows files, then comes up to
the SCCM screen with the error "Unable to read task sequence configuration disk."
    Any ideas what's going on?

In my case I had the same error using SCCM boot media in a USB 3.0 port. Solution was here to use a USB 2.0 port to solve it.

  • DVD drive won't read disks at boot

    I have a Paviliton DV6-2113sa running Win7 HP  64bit.
I removed Acronis True Image and when I rebooted I got a BSOD at the point when the coloured balls should merge into one.
I thought OK, put the system repair disk into the DVD drive and boot up, but the drive is failing to read any recovery dosks. I think the drive has packed up as I haven't used it for some time.
Can I use any replacement drive in this model or must I get the same one again?
The drive light flickers as though it is reading data but it doesn't 'spool up' to speed and I don't get the 'press any key to load from DVD'.
The BSODs are a seperate issue which I think running a system repair will fix but I can't as the drive won't read data.
Is it possible to put the repair disk files onto a 4gb USB stick and if so, how do I do it?
    Thanks.

    Hi Peeps
I had exactly the same problem with my Macbook, again from the UK. Really weird though as would intermittantly read DVD film's which worked fine previously.
Well.... Took it to my local Apple store and saw a genius and anyway they replaced the super drive and logic board (surprised about the logic board!).
But just got it back today and the DVD drive is completely fubard so is being returned tomorrow to get this sorted!
Moral of the story, sounds like a drive or board problem. Will keep you updated when I get mine back
