Drive Sleep Problem

Even though I have " put the hard disks to sleep when possible" = UNCHECKED In the Energy saver system preference... it seems as though my brand new Seagate external 300 gig - newly formatted ( with apple disk utility) HFS extended ( not journaled ) Drive still seems to go to sleep when the computer has been sitting idle for a while.
EX: when I double click on the icon in the Finder after a period of idleness ... the window takes about 5 seconds to open the first time ... after that it reopens quickly.
- I have several other external hard drives on the same machine that are not " going to sleep" ( pausing when opening)
Q: What could be causing this on this one drive? Is there a way to fixit?

Hi, Rev Dave.
The way the Put the hard drive to sleep when possible option works is a bit different than you might expect. See the section "SBBOD spins for 30-35 seconds. You may hear your hard drives spinning up" of my "Spinning Beach Ball Of Death (SBBOD)" FAQ.
How hard drives other than your startup disk respond to this option is often a function of how these devices recognize and work with Mac OS X power management, i.e. their firmware. My FireWire drives, for example, will spin down on their own after a certain period of inactivity despite settings in Energy Saver preferences.
There is no way to correct this.
Good luck!

  • 15" AL PB G4 Sleep Problems

    Another in the long list of sleep problems. Running the latest & greatest Tiger and all that. I have read and read and READ! the discussions and followed most of the advise to no avail. Here's what's up.
    When I try to put the PB to sleep, either by closing the lid or through apple menu, everything starts out ok. Screen goes dark, LED comes on, Great! At the moment when the LED becomes brightest, the Superdrive makes a noise like it is cycling, and the PB wakes up. If I leave the lid closed it continues this indefinitely. If the lid is up, it wakes and the srceen flashes from desktop to black a couple of times the seems ok.
    When I open the lid after experiencing this behavior I can hear the machine wake, but screen stays black. Must turn off by holding down power button, then start up again and all is fine.
    Any one else experiencing this drive cycling?
    Thanx,

  • Hard Drive Sleep Issue

    I´ve got one problem with my Mac Pro running a fresh tiger installation. My internal hard drives go to sleep although i´ve unchecked the "enable hard drive sleep" checkbox in the energysaver prefpane. i am using 4 internal hds and after a while of one or more being inactive i can hear them spinnig up upon reactivation (doubleclick) and there is a certain delay in responsiveness (e.g. windows opening up...). Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

    There is a utility named "spindown fix" that can resolve the issue of HD's not staying up even after you've unchecked "put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible." Apparently that doesn't actually do anything
    Normally, I let my drives spin down to conserver energy and keep everything cooler, including external FW drives. But sometimes when I'm using Final Cut Pro, I don't want the delay while I await a spin up. So I uncheck "HD sleep" in energy saver and then run Spindown Fix. It seems to work.
    Search the web for "spindown fix."
    (edit): I did some more research, and at least in 10.4.11, if you have the system sleep other than "never" and don't check the HD sleep option in energy saver, the HD sleep doesn't becomre "never" but rather 180 minutes. You can verify this for your system by using the plist editor (part of development tools package delivered with 10.4) and examining libarary/preferences/systemconfiguration/com.apple.powermangement/plist
    In the AC power custom profile, you'll find the parameter Disk Sleep Time; you can examine how it varies based on your energy saver settings. Some say to set it to zero to prevent spin down form occurring every; I would not necessarily recommend that if 180 minutes is long enough for your.

  • Unable to write to external drive after drive sleeps

    This topic seems to be all over the place. I want to know if there is a fix.
    I have a number of external disk drives. They are connected via USB and firewire. About 30% of the time, if a drive has been put in sleep mode and then later awakened, I am unable to write to it. If I try to dismount the drive I get a -50 error that the drive is in use. But that is not true because nothing but the finder is running. If I look the console log there are lots of the following messages.
    Dec 6 15:50:43 squid fseventsd[45]: disk logger: failed to open output file /Volumes/Calvary1TB/.fseventsd/63657332a56b8d30 (Invalid argument). mount point /Volumes/Calvary1TB/.fseventsd
    Dec 6 15:50:50 squid UnmountAssistant[1463]:
    The drive in question is the CAXM Calvary1TB drive. BTW when I received the Calvary disk drive, I reformatted it OSX journaled with a GUID partition before using it. All my other 8 TB of storage is formatted the same way and I had no problems before Snow Leopard. Anyhow, If I force a dismount, all returns to normal. OR if I disable sleep the drive drives options in the energy saver preferences, the problem disappears. But then none of the drives ever spin down.
    Once every 50 or so forced dismounts (it happens a lot), OSX will crash with the kiss of death display.
    This problem did not exist in pre Snow Leopard, so obviously changes were made to the file system and not properly tested. Anyone have any idea when this will be fixed.

    The drive in question is the CAXM Calvary1TB drive.
    Calvary lists this drive series only in its "Windows PC" section at http://www.cavalrystorage.com/pr_index.htm. This could be a problem because different manufacturers use different methods to implement wake-from-sleep (or more generally, energy management features) in the support circuitry of external drives. IOW, there are no universal standards for this, so manufacturers may or may not design their implementations for cross-platform compatibility.
    Unfortunately, since Windows PC's dominate the market some manufacturers use energy management methods in some or all of their designs that work reliably only with that platform. For this reason, there is always some risk of unexpected behavior when using external drives not specifically marketed as Mac OS X compatible with a Mac. (This is not a problem with "raw" internal drives directly connected to a Mac's SATA interface because there is no support circuitry involved.)
    Since you already have invested in these drives, your best bet is to contact Calvary & see if they can offer a solution. If you are lucky, they may have a firmware updater for the CAXM series that works reliably with Snow Leopard; if not, they may simply tell you not to let the drives sleep, or that they don't support the CAXM series with Macs & you are on your own.

  • IMac wake from sleep problem

    I have an Intel imac that I've had for about 9 months. It is on a normal sleep setting and I usually wake it from sleep by moving the mouse.
    In the past 3 weeks, though, I have had to wake it up by pressing the space bar. When I do this the computer pauses for a moment and I hear something wind down (I would say it is the hard drive, but the tone of the sound actually goes down rather than up - as if something got stuck on its way to sleeping).
    Any ideas about this ? I also had the computer go to sleep yesterday and not wake up (led lights on screen were on, but nothing on the screen). I powered it down and tried to turn it back on, but same result (backlight on, but no boot up). I finally had to pull the power plug and restart the computer with the power button depressed. This seemed to shake up the computer and get it running again.
    My sleep problem, though, is still the same. I'm not sure if these issues are related or not, but looking for some feedback on possible issues...
    Thanks, Mark

    Hi Mark
    +The System Management Controller (SMC) is a chip on the logic board that controls all power functions for your computer. If your computer is experiencing any power issue, resetting the SMC may resolve it. The SMC controls several functions, including:+
    +* Telling the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so forth.+
    +* Handling system resets from various commands.+
    +* Controlling the fans.+
    If you are still having any of the above issues reset the SMC as described in the following article!

  • New MacPro Sleep Problem

    My MacPro is having the sleep problem again after I installed and unstilled Adobe Photoshop Elements 13. It had been working fine for the last few months until the Adobe software. I have worked with 2 Apple advisors and 1 Apple sr. advisor. But they can't seem to address my issue. The problem is that my MacPro cannot enter sleep mode after a preset time.
    Can someone please look at the following output from "pmset -g assertions" and advise what I should look into? Thanks in advance.

    Hi guys,
    It maybe you'll help me also?
    I started research the problem from Address Book Sync. I got this problem on 10.9.5 than I upgraded to 10.10.2 to fix it but with no result.

  • MacBook Pro sleep problems with Vista SP1

    Has anyone faced sleep problems on a MacBook Pro after installing Vista SP1?
    I run Boot Camp 2.0 with the latest update from Apple.
    IDT finally issued a compatible Vista driver for my Sigmatel audio.
    I was very happy for the first time running Vista on my Apple when I had the stupid idea to upgrade to SP1.
    After days of troubleshooting with Windows support it is obvious that SP1 and my MacBook Pro are incompatible for some obscure reasons. The latest time I tried SP1 was through Windows Update, which means that Windows detected no compatibility issues, such as drivers.
    I suspect Apple-in-sight driver without any evidence, just a hint.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hibernation seems iffy. Have you tried disabling hibernation? and when you say sleep, what happens? won't wake or what?
    Normally I don't recommend resetting NVRAM or SMU but for sleep you might want to.
    And yes, trying to rule out why can be difficult. But I would not blame SP1. Maybe BC 2.1.
    Do you have a book dealing with Vista? or looked for articles or forums that deal with Vista? There is one for Vista64 - assume you have 32-bit though. Google is often best way to find things in Apple discussions or knowledge base, too.

  • Sleeping Problem With ACD 27"

    I have a sleeping problem with my 27" ACD that is connected to a 2010 Mac Pro and a Macbook Pro. The display is set to sleep after 5 minutes and it appears to be sleeping. The screen goes black but on closer inspection with a flash light, you can still see the login screen or any open window.
    Here is a picture of what i'm experiencing http://www.flickr.com/photos/59070359@N04/5411570689/.
    Can anyone confirm this problem by trying the steps below?
    1.) Have the Apple 27 ACD connected to a 2010 Mac Pro with the latest Mac OS X update(10.6.6).
    2.) Go into the Energy Saver and set the Display to sleep at 1 minute and have computer sleep set to never.
    3.) Leave the System Preferences window open and wait for the display to sleep.
    4.) Once you see that the display is asleep flash a light directly on the screen where you left the System Preferences window open.

    I discovered this effect many weeks ago and just thought that's the way the display "sleeps". A possibly simpler way to reproduce the effect is to select a hot corner to put the display to sleep (using the Hot Corners... button in the Desktop & Screen Save preferences). Put the mouse in the selected hot corner to put the display to sleep and then shine the flashlight on the screen. You'll see an "echo" (? - pick a term of your choice) of whatever is on the screen at the time it's put to "sleep".
    I don't normally use the hot corners feature since I quickly discovered I would sometimes move the mouse into there inadvertently and it was annoying when the screen blacked out. I don't consider this a "problem" though. After all how many folks shine flashlights at their ACD? I'm not sure what I was thinking to prompt me to ever do it in the first place.
    I was once jokingly going to post about never shining flashlight at the ACD simply because you can then see every smudge and smear on the glass It would then start to drive you nuts trying to get 'em all off!
    \[Heh, I guess now everyone reading this thread it now pulling out flashlights \]

  • New 520 w/sleeping problem

    My new 520 w/Windows7 has a sleeping problem.  In spite of the Control Panel Power Management options being set to NEVER for both Battery and AC Power which is confirmed in the Lenovo Toolbox, the computer enters the sleep mode in about one minute after no mouse or keyboard activity.
    Lenovo support says it is an OS problem and MS Support insists it is a hardware problem.  I'm stuck in the middle.

    Try uninstalling the Power Manager and power management driver.
    Reboot then install both again and see if it helps.

    I have a Y2P (i5) ... Feel free to ping me if you want me to test some applications with your Y2P if you have the same model. I don't mind keep doing recovery on it if needed .... =)

  • Manual Sleep Problem

    Occasionally, when I try to put my G5 to sleep manually, it won't go to sleep. I always make sure that all powered peripherals are unplugged. And then the problem goes away after restarting. But the the manual sleep problem returns within a week or so. I prefer to keep my Energy Saver on "Never Sleep" because I run Pro Tools on my machine and it doesn't support sleep mode.
    Has anyone else had this problem?
    Thanks

    David Penick1-
    From your description it is most likely one of the externally attached devices.
    The USB and FW hubs built in to the Apple monitors have a habit of causing this problem. I would disconnect those hubs first and see what happens.
    It may be one of the drives as well.
    I would suggest disconnecting all external peripherals except keyboard and mouse and see if the problem goes away. If it does, keep adding devices one at a time until you discover which one is causing the problem.
    Luck-

  • New Sleep Problem Information

    RE: Computer won't wake from sleep
    I've read through most of the threads regarding this problem and have begun to narrow down some things. One by one, I've tried different configurations during sleep. I only have this problem when my wireless mouse is plugged into the USB port. Now I'm not sure if Bluetooth mice have the same problem. Please post if you're having this problem with a Bluetooth mouse so we can see if it's a "wireless mouse" problem, or if it has something to do with the USB ports. When I need to sleep the computer - I leave everything the way it normally is (i.e. backup drive, ethernet cable and power cable plugged in) and I just unplug the USB wireless mouse module. The computer sleeps and wakes without a problem.

    I went to check on my preferences for my wireless mouse and found that during the install of Leopard my control panel held onto the original install of my mouse - it then added another with the install. I had the same control panel listed twice. It must have created a conflict upon waking from sleep. I recently did a clean install of Leopard on a brand new hard drive for my Late '06 Mac Pro. I currently have all updates installed, and the system is running very fast and very stable. But!
    I've been experiencing two problems over the week I've had Leopard installed, and I would just like to know if other MP users are sharing these as well...
    1. Half the time I wake the computer from sleep, the fans blast off for about 10 seconds before the desktop is shown. Sometimes when the computer goes to sleep, via Energy Saver, my hard drives keep spinning.
    2. Shut down takes an excruciatingly long time. My typical shut down lasts around a minute to a minute and a half.
    I've read around and have seen a few problems like this, but I want to know if there are a larger majority of people with a Mac Pro who are experiencing either of these in Leopard.
    It's not such a nuisance, being I don't have to wait for shut down and I can wait around a few seconds when waking up the computer. Though, here's to hoping 10.5.3 or a firmware update can fix these two issues!

    I had re-start from sleep problems on my '06 MP. Root cause was NG ram. Replaced wit hApple ram from OWC.com and it fixed the issue. That ram caused other issue such as frequent spinning beachball and just the feel was not right.
    What can you try? i'd suspect ram but first any attached devices such as a 7 port Belkin USB hub which messed with deep sleep on mine and was replaced with a CyberPower USB hub.
    Also do a smc power manager reset. Just unplu everything and wait a few mins the attach Apple keyboard and mouse power up and see what happens. One thing at a time.

  • Pioneer Blu-Ray Workaround Allows Enabled Drive Sleep

    The common workaround for Pioneer Blu-Ray drives that vanish is to disable Put hard disks to sleep in Energy Saver preferences.  Here is another workaround that seems to solve the problem while being able to put the rest of your hard disks to sleep when idle.
    Normal drive sleep happens after 10 minutes of inactivity.  All that is needed to keep the Blu-Ray drive happy is to touch it in some way more often than 10 minutes.  This can be accomplished by using /usr/bin/drutil to get the status of the drive.  I've tested this with all combinations I can think of - tray open, tray closed and empty, blank disc present, reading from disc, burning disc, etc.
    All that is needed is a LaunchDaemon that executes /usr/bin/drutil status every few minutes.  I've placed the following file called hack.blu-ray.plist into /Library/LaunchDaemons.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
              <key>Label</key>
              <string>hack.blu-ray</string>
              <key>ProgramArguments</key>
              <array>
                        <string>/usr/bin/drutil</string>
                        <string>status</string>
              </array>
              <key>StartInterval</key>
              <integer>180</integer>
              <key>KeepAlive</key>
              <false/>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    Then either reboot or launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/hack.blu-ray.plist
    This will run every 3 minutes.  Change the StartInterval for other values - must be less than Disk Sleep Timer in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

    Sorry, I have not upgraded any of my machines to Yosemite yet.  It would be odd for this to stop working as it is just using Apple tools.
    I suppose it is possible that they shortened the Disk Sleep Timer in Yosemite.  See the post above for the location of the relevant file to check.  If they changed it to something less than ~5 minutes then you can shorten the 180 above to something less.  If not, you could try running drutil status from within Terminal after you burn a disc to see if it produces an error.  If you are able to write scripts, you could replace running drutil status with your script - then you could do additional debugging from within your script.

  • Vista x64 Sleep Problem (no sleep, blank screen)

    Just after installing the PCI-E X-Fi Fatalty card, my computer is now unable to go to sleep. It just hangs there at a blank screen with everything still working. Once I reinstalled the X-Fi driver in the device manager and that fixed it for a minute but the sleep problem still came back when I switched from Game Mode (default setting) to Audio Creation Mode. Now even if I reinstall the driver completely and not touch anything, the problem is still there. Maybe its the way Vista detects and assigns the memory space to the card I would like to get this resolved, my system specs are below.
    OS Name Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
    Version 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002
    OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
    System Manufacturer Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.

    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz, 3000 Mhz, 4 Core(s)

    Total Physical Memory 4.00 GB
    Available Physical Memory 2.7 GB
    Total Virtual Memory 8.20 GB
    Available Virtual Memory 6.75 GB

    I have replaced the power supply now and there is no change. I see a flash of the backlight when I initially power the system on, then the post beeps and nothing displayed.
    To recap, initially the system would not post. I attributed this, correctly, to a failed video card. Replaced it and I'm reasonably certain I could boot into Windows though I couldn't see anything. There was appropriate POST beeps and hard drive activity light consistent with Windows booting. When I waited for the hard drive activity light to stop, I could then press the power button and there would be hard drive activity consistent with Windows shutting down and the system would power off.
    I replaced the inverter, but I lost track of which power leads were connected where on the inverter board. (IF anyone knows where the pink and blue leads connect for certain PLEASE let me know). Anyway, no change.
    I replaced the LCD. No change.
    I replaced the motherboard. No change.
    I replaced the CMOS battery with a new one. No change.
    I cleared the BIOS config, now I can't boot into Windows but otherwise, no change.
    Finally, I bought a power supply, as recommended, and replaced it and you guessed it, no change.
    So I guess, besides maybe getting the inverter connected incorrectly, I have tried replacing every part that I could even remotely imagine could cause my issue. I have devoted a lot of time to figuring this out and I almost always solve a system problem. Help!?!
