Drive sockets misaligned in MacPro

I have misalignment problems in the drive bays of my a Quad Core 2.8 GHZ Macpro. There are four drive bays and it appears the e-sata sockets in the back of the machine are bent down slightly because they would not connect with the tabs on the back of the new hard drives. I have Apple Care, but a representative has said I am on my own.
I have been having this problem ever since I bought the machine...only the e-sata drives supplied with the machine seem to fit. If I tried anything else, the drive would slide in on its carrier and then stop just short of connecting the the female e-sata sockets in the back of the machine. If I pushed hard, the sockets in the back of the machine (which are on mounted on little steel tabs) bent down and would not allow a connection.
How do I get this fixed......
I looked around this board and haven't found any postings of similar experiences. and I am wondering why
Tim

No, you wouldn't think that someone buying a new drive today would end up with one that didn't fit the Mac in some way, if even using an interface, like the sleds that Maxupgrades makes for V-Raptors and SSDs. http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_i d=180
Oh, I'm sorry, you're saying that with the apparent approval of Apple, putting out manuals for things the user can modify on their own Macs and having a list of customer installable parts for that end, that the Apple Reps are being insincere? I guess they are sincere to the point you break things. Yeah, that's Apple...
(There are no tabs to bend. Socket to accept power and another for data.)
I seem to recall being very wary when I put my disks in the bays. I seem to remember having the feeling I could push the drive in far enough to damage something in that area of the bay, either the connection itself or something very near it. I felt a few times that the disk was seated when it wasn't.

  • Moving iPhoto library to a second drive bay on a MacPro

My iPhoto library is 190 GB and I need to move it to an alternate drive bay on my MacPro. I copied (not moved) the library over to the new drive. When I launch iPhoto, it still uses the original iPhoto library on the home drive (even if I launch with Alt iPhoto). I was expecting to be asked in a dialog which library I wanted to point to, but I didn't get a dialog. Is that because it's on a different drive, not just a different folder? Before I delete the original library I want to make sure I have done this properly and iPhoto is pointing to the new drive bay.
    Thank you.

When you depress the option (alt) key and launch iPhoto you should get a window showing all of your iPhoto libraries so you can select one - are you not getting this window or does it contain only one library?
TO verify where the library you are using is launch iPhoto and open an event - select a photo and right click (control click) on it and select the show file (or shoe original file) option and see the path to it (I like the column view to do this)
if you find that you do not have a valid iPhoto library on the second drive just quit iPhoto and trash the one you copied to the second drive and drag the iPhoto library as a single entity (just one drag operation) from the pictures folder on the first drive to the second drive and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key - you should see both libraries not - select the one on the second drive, test it and then you can quit iPhoto and delete the one on the first drive ( I suggest launching iPhoto one more time and verifying that things are good before emptying the trash)

  • Internal drives from my older Macpro keeping my new 8 core from booting

I am upgrading from an older dual core Macpro to a new 8 core and found that if I install any of the internal drives from my older Macpro in the new 8 core the computer won't boot. The drives just have data on them no applications of operating software. The older boot drive won't let the 8 core boot either if its installed.
Anyone know if this is to be expected and if so why? I will have to copy 3 - 1 TB drives if they can't be directly used in the new computer.
    Thanks

I've seen a severe corrupt directory cause Macs to refuse to boot from any drive, even from CD/DVDs making it hard to repair and requiring a USB/FW case to repair/format or recovery files.
During startup the system has to scan for valid boot drives even though startup disk tells it where to try to boot from.
Also yours by default boots in 64-bit mode.
Once you have the files you need copied over, why not just reformat and clone your current system.

  • Will a BluRay RW drive work with a MacPro?

Will a BluRay RW drive work with a MacPro?
    Internal SATA or external FireWire/USB?
    Thanks,

Our organization has several Blu-ray drives built into our Mac Pros. They work great.

  • ESata external drive not recognized on MacPro 2,1

Hi. I installed Newertechnologys MacPro "Quad Xeon" eSATA extender cables from OWC into my MacPro 2,1. They connect directly to the logic board. I have tried connecting to OWC Mercury Elite-Al Pro Qx2 external drive bay and also tried an Eagle enclosure with a eSata port. No joy. Both drive bays are recognized on Firewire and usb, just not on eSata. The previous owner had used one of the logic board ports for an optic drive. Still had the cable attached to the port. I have tried multiple eSata cables from both ports. Am I missing something or are the ports bad? I see nothing in system profiler that would indicate that the ports even exist. Thanks.

It makes sense that you cannot Hot Swap. You are not actually converting to eSATA (as you would with an added PCIe card) you are simply extending the cables (that Apple put there for INTERNAL drives) out the back of the machine.
It also makes sense that these cables show up on the Serial-ATA, or SATA Bus.

  • Hard Drive Trouble on New MacPro

Hello I have had my MacPro desktop for about 4 days now and am having some problems.
There is a 250 gb harddrive in my system and I when I get info the capacity shows as 232.57. I could have sworn it used to say 250gb.
Also on my desktop when I select view options and select "show item info" so it displays the hard drive info with the name it reads:
    232.57 GB,....14 GB free
The useful info is missing, I thought it was just truncated but who would care to see how much is remaining after the decimal. However, when I put in a custom desktop icon the information was back to: 232.57 GB, 219.25 free. I thought the problem was partly fixed but now it is displaying strangely again.
When I was installing photoshop it said I only had 4gb available on this drive.
Could someone please help me as to why this information is not displaying properly.
    Thanks

Thanks for the replies... I actually have the font size the smallest it goes. This info used to show up properly (I know that for sure). Like I mentioned earlier when I changed the icon to a custom one (cmd + I and paste the image on top of the previous icon in) The info returned to displaying properly, then after a few minutes it returned back to this "corrupted" state.
I have tried changing the icon again, toggle show file info on and off, restarting, adjusting the font size and even went to the extreme measures of reinstalling the OS sine this computer is still pretty empty being so new. Perhaps I am missing something here but this has me confused.
    Thanks

  • Problems with Pages and Numbers using iCloud Drive on early 2008 MacPro, Yosemite

One of my computers, an early 2008 MacPro running Yosemite, will NOT save Pages or Numbers documents to iCloud Drive from within those applications.  I see the little iCloud Drive error badge next to the file name in Finder after I try to save.  However, on the SAME computer I can save Pages and Numbers documents to a local drive (e.g., to my Desktop) and then use the Finder to drag the documents to iCloud Drive successfully.  Another computer, a MacBook Pro running Yosemite, has no problems using iCloud Drive to create, edit and then save Pages and Numbers documents stored on iCloud Drive.  I have tried "turning off" iCloud Drive for Pages and Numbers in System Preferences on the Mac Pro and then turning it back on to no effect.  I have also logged out of iCloud Drive on all of my devices (which include two iOS devices) and then logging back in to ensure that I'm using the same login id on all devices, again with no apparent change.
Any suggestions for my next steps in attempting to solve this issue?  Is there any way to get more information about precisely what type of error is occurring?  Hovering over the badge only shows "Error".
    Thanks in advance.
    Jon

Found a solution, but it is odd:
On the 2008 Mac Pro, I UNCHECK the boxes beside Pages and Numbers in System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Options. Now Pages and Numbers will properly save edited documents to the appropriate folders on iCloud Drive.
    Go figure ...
Hope that this helps someone else.

When I just reset db listener everything works ok for next 1-2 hours (depends on application load). So temporary solution is to run bat script from windows scheduler to reset the listener every 1h.
I tried everything I could find - applied these parameters:
      - Sqlnet.ora:
      SQLNET.INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT=180
      SQLNET.EXPIRE_TIME=5
      - Listener.ora:
      INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT_LISTENER_IPC=120
    But still without success

Is the problem here just that you need a connection pool that closes idle connections?  Some pools will close idle connections after a time out period.  And the pool lets you set that time out period.  If the pool you are using doesn't provide that then use a different pool.

  • Will a 2tb drive work in my macpro?

I have a 2008 8 core macpro. Will a 2tb internal sata drive work ok? Thanks.

Short answer is "yes." You have the long answer, which is, it's not as fast, won't take advantage of the new SATA controllers, etc.
But if you are looking to cram a 2T drive in your system, it will work and it will format to 1.89T or so, giving the room you need. I have a Mac Pro 4,1 (Dual Quad-Core Nehalem) box with three 1T drives and one 1.5T drive and they all work great. I'm using the larger drive as a Time Machine drive. In that I'm looking for security and capacity, speed isn't that big a deal.
And if you're looking for raw speed, you need to go to external arrays on your Mac Pro. If you're editing HD video, you must be on an array and you should be on a system that will feed you as many streams as your CPU can handle.

  • Can Any SATA Drive (including SATA 1 drives) be Used on MacPro?

Can one install and use any SATA drive (including a SATA 1) drive on a Mac Pro?
I am thinking about using a WD Caviar SE16 but it would appear to be a SATA 1 drive (1.5 GB/s drive).
Do all SATA drives have the same connector (that is compatible with the mating connector inside the MacPro)?
    Rob

While SATA II drives should provide generally better performance any SATA drive will work in a Mac Pro.

  • ICloud drive recently disappeared from MacPro (OS X Yosemite v10.10.2).

On my MacPro - when I click on the iCloud drive in Finder - there are no files anymore. This just happened recently & I haven't updated my OS.
I'm running iTunes match. When I load music into iTunes on MacPro it shows them waiting for the cloud. At the top right side is a cloud with gray lines running through it. When I download a song onto my iPhone - it does copy over to Mac. Entries made in Calendar show up immediately on iPhone.
Also I no longer see an icon where i can even log into iCloud - it used to be on Launchpad I think.

Use Software Update (under the Apple menu at the top left of the display) to upgrade using the 10.6.8 "Combo" update. This avoids all of the intermediate upgrades steps.

  • Will SATA2 drive work in a MacPro?

I need to add a 2nd hard drive to my Mac Pro. But I am having a tough time finding one that is obviously compatible. On the MacPro tech specs (http://www.apple.com/macpro/specs.html), the drives are listed as "Serial ATA 3Gb/s".
My local store only has SATA2 drives. For example, on the Western Digital site, the WD Caviar SE 16 750 GB drive looks perfect (http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=311), but when I search that part number (WD7500AAKS) at the local store, it comes up as SATA2.
    My questions, then are:
    • Should I care about using a SATA2 drive in the MacPro. Will SATA2 work?
    • Is my local company wrong and this drive is really a normal SATA?
    • Does anyone have any first-hand info of a good 750 GB (500 if I have to) hard drives for the MacPro. I've always been happy with my WD Caviars for previous computers.
My current set-up has only the OEM 500GB hd. I don't need RAID, nor am I doing any disk-intensive video work. My MacPro is a part-time graphic design machine / home computer.

SATA II (or 2) is what you want. SATA I drives will also work but they have lower performance specs.
A really good 750 GB SATA II drive for the MacPro is the Western Digital Caviar 750GB SE16 (WD7500AAKS). A review of the drive's performance in the MacPro can be found here (http://www.barefeats.com/hard91.html). I use one for my boot drive and it is very fast, quiet and it runs cool. A good place to buy the drive is Other World Computing (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD7500AAKS/) for around $220. OWC makes buying the right hard drives, memory, optical drives and other peripherals fairly fool-proof as you select your computer model and then see only the components that will work in that computer.

  • I'd like to import my camera video using iMovie to a hard drive attached to my MacPro. Is there a way to do this? I'd like some help.

I'd like to import my camera video to a hard drive attached to a Mac Pro. Has anyone been successful doing this? Please help?

If you use iMovie, you need to import it into iMovie.
What storage does your camera have? SD card? That's easy: plug it into Mac and then drag the footage from the SD card to the external drive.

  • How do I stop external hard drives from slowing my macpro

I have a Mac pro (OSX 10.6.7) with two internal drives and two external drives (Lacie and Western Digital). The external drives are used exclusily for once a day backup using super dooper. When they are mounted my machine seriously slows down. I can unmount them during the day and remount them at the end of the day to get around this but it is a big inconvience. What should I do to keep them running all day with no slow down. I have ran disk utility, Onyx, and tech tools (not the latest version). I forgot which but one one of them only checked the internal drives.

Don't use USB for one. Turn them off until you run SuperDuper.
Switch to native SATA interface and controller.
Disable spotlight on them too. Or try deleting the index and database.
Green WD drives have been known to 'fall off the chain" or appear to not be mounted, or act like they are in sleep mode at times, and not work well with TimeMachine.
I like to keep one backup set off line while the other backup set is being updated. But you may want to use your 4 internal drive bays too.

  • How to order hard drive sled screws for MacPro HD sled?

I got a refurb. 2.66 and it working great. However, when I tried to change out the Apple/Seagate drive the last screw looked like someone had used the wrong sized screw drive and slightly stripped the Philips head slots on the top of the screw. I managed to get it out, but would like to replace it.
Does anyone have a source for these. They look different than the usual screws that fasten hard drives down.

There's nothing unique about the threads on those screws. I've used regular screws that ship with some of my drives when I misplaced my sled screws. Any screw that matches the threads on the hard drive will work.
If you don't have any, go to the nearest Frys Electronics or order some "anti vibration" screws:
