  • Drive sound when waking from sleep?

Hi, I am getting a short 2-3 second drive sound when I wake my MBP from sleep. It sounds like it is checking to see if there is a disc in the drive or something. Also might be described as the sound when your first put a disc into the drive(but maybe shorter). Is this normal? And also if it is normal is there a way to stop it from making the noise because I actually find it annoying me, I wake my computer from sleep a lot throughout the day. My friends MBP who bought his just a few months before mine does not make a sound when waking from sleep. Thanks.

They all do. All of them. Yours. Mine. Your friend's. Old PowerBooks. Brand new MBPs. Everything in between.

Maybe his optical drive is broken?
Or, more likely, it's not waking up from sleep at all - Energy Saver settings can be used to set the display to sleep before the MBP sleeps - a key press will "wake" the display, but the MBP itself was not asleep, thus no noise from the drive when it the display is reactivated.

  • Hard drive sounds like it's about to take flight...won't boot at all.

Got one for ya. I just updated my G4 to 10.4.7 and now when I boot:
    1) Button lights up
    2) Hard drive sounds like a teen driving a Ferrari to prom in first gear.
    - that's it. No screen, mouse, keyboard, start-up noise ( I so miss that wonderful "BONG!" noise, now. ) Nothing.
I am old-school PC newB by MAC so be patient w/me.
PS. how do you open the optical drive with no power to the keyboard?

  • ASIO Low Latency Driver sound output is bad?

My Notebook comes with "build-in" asio drivers called "Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver". Further there is ASIO DirectX FullDuplex Driver and ASIO Multimedia Driver.
Sound card is: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.
    Running Win7 x64 (HP ProBook 6550b).
All drivers are the most recent ones.
Problem: 'Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver' sound output is much worse than using the other ones (there the sound is really great in both of them, but they have way to much latencies, so I cannot use them in cubase or any other music daw).
So I'd like to use the (standard build-in) Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver. But the sound is much worse in contrast to the other drivers! It sounds a bit like a phaser or gramophone.
Just to clarify: there are no glitches or stuttering in any case. Just the sound-"quality" is that messed up...
I'm getting really upset about this. Tried the recent version of the ASIO4All 2.10 driver, but the problem remains! The sound with asio4all is exactly as bad as with the buildin Asio Low Latency Driver.
How on earth can I achieve low latency with good sound in Cubase? Has anyobne experienced things like this before, or might there be any fix for this?

Well, it's just the standard driver that comes with my notebook, named HP ProBook 6550b.
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=32...
I did not take control over the buildin audio driver installation, because win7 installs these drivers innately.
The problem does not only occure in Cubase, but in any music tool/program/player where I set the driver to low latency (which obv does not make sense in others than cubase, but for testing I found out that it is not an application related problem).
It is really strange. The soundcard seems to provide real asio, but the low latency sounds as bad as the "pretending" asio4all. hm...

  • Drive sounds crunchy

The drive sounds a little too crunchy for my liking after inserting a disk. The seating of the disk sounds harsh. Should this process by relatively silent or can I expect it to be somewhat noisy.

    G'day Rod,
Thanks for your response. Yes, that's the exact sound my disk drive makes but with an additional clunk between wert wit.
If I could have heard you verbalize that sound I would have replied "how's it go?".
    Ex-pat Sydney.
Ah! If I'd known that that I would have stuck with my first thought and said 'like a badly played gum-leaf", Geoff!

Try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't help, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If neither helped, boot from your install disc, run Disk Utillity. The startup disk may need repairing.
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
Check the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.
    Make sure it says: Verified

  • Upgraded to 10.4 - now my external hard drive sounds like a blender.

    Hi -
I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I have a new LaCie external drive that I keep all my important files on. One of the reasons I bought this drive was because it's extremely quiet and shuts itself down after a few minutes not in use. I just upgraded to 10.4 last night and when I came in this morning, the hard drive now sounds like a kitchen disposal with a spoon stuck in it -- an obnoxious loud clanking comes from it at all times whether it computer is accessing it or not. Anyone know how to fix this or even hear of ths issue? It's extremely annoying.

Actually, it seems to have stopped now completely and is working fine. Weird. I was exagerrating about bit with the blender remark, but it's a new drive so I can't imagine it would fail that suddenly, especially with the change of OS.

  • Problem install driver sound blaster Omni surround 5.1

Hi, I have just bought this sound card. My computer is using win 7. But when I insert CD and install driver. Then I can't install it and the message below is showed:
"Setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system"
Please help me resolve it .
    Thank you so much

Maybe you are connecting your Omni Surround 5.1 to a USB hub. How about trying to connect the device to another empty USB port?
Maybe you can try to disable your on board sound card in the bios to see if it works.

  • Is this a hard-drive sound...impending doom?!

For those who know what they're listening to, what is this sound?

Is it the sound of a hard drive going bad? It only happens when I change the orientation of the computer (tilt it).
    G4Dual1.25MDD, PowerMac8600/498mHzG3   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   3 years old

I just had mine replaced at an Apple service centre, cost approximately 140 USD.
Once installed, I realised that my previous HDD had been working at its limits for a while. The new drive just makes the quiet clicking sound I remember from when I first got the PB, instead of having the fans going half the time and other little groans and rattles. The S.MA.R.T. status always showed up as verified, though.

  • Odd La Cie External Hard Drive Sound

    Hi everyone.
I got a load of Apple stuff ranging from 1985-1996 yesterday and included was an external LaCie hard drive.
I plugged her in and noticed a really, really odd sound. I've never heard of HDD make a sound like this before, and couldn't find a similar sound on all of the "hard drive failure sounds" websites.
The hard drive itself is an IBM DORS-32160 from 1996. Below is a link to a youtube video with the hard drive producing the odd sound. I believe it repeats 3 times before I stop recording.
    youtube.com/watch?v=Plbo5SJl5Go
You will need to turn your speakers up.
I assume its means the HDD is toast, but does anyone have any idea what this means? Like, what the problem is or if you have heard it before?
    Thanks a bunch.

DiskWarrior will only repair HFS and HFS+ file systems. You need a utility that repairs the FAT file system. You might try hooking the drive up to a Windows box then try to repair it with a Windows disk utility.

  • Satellite A300 - Hard drive sound

    Thanks for any reply
    Otherwise nice machine

  • Strange hard drive sounds

Whenever I open my macbook the hard drive seems to make a "re-adjusting" noise. It hasn't been acting strangely or erratically, the noise is just a bit unnerving. ANy ideas on what it could be?

Take a look at this article from Apple, specifically the first option "Waking the computer from sleep."

Are any of those sounds the same as what you're hearing?

  • Grinding Hard Drive Sound

Almost every time I start my new MBP, there is a grinding/clicking sound coming from the bottom right side of the palmrest, which I assume is where the hard drive is located. This seems abnormal. Also, when I raise and lower the computer in the air when carrying it around, I can hear a whizzing sound coming from the same location. Never heard this before in any of my computers. Anyone else having this experience? For the record, I have a 250gb 7200rpm hard drive.
    Thanks!

If that sound is from the Superdrive, then its normal.
Maybe you can post a video on youtube? Its hard to judge right now.
