Driver confusion

Hello!  Had a few quick questions about the drivers available for the z77 MPOWER that I was hoping the folks at this forum could help with.  This is for a private gaming PC running Windows 7 64-bit (no RAID).
- Intel Management Engine Driver
What is this exactly?  The impression I got from what I read online was that it would be unnecessary for a gaming PC, but I'd like to be sure.
- Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver
- Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver for 7x series
- Intel Rapid Storage Technology Floppy Driver for 7x series
Which of these three do I need?  z77 is part of the Intel 7 series of motherboards (I think), so would I need only the second one?  Would I need the first AND the second?  Confused about this.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

IME FW is integral within the Intel chipset. It performs some POST functions for one. The driver should also be installed for it to properly function when in the OS. The impression is incorrect.
Just this one;

  • Graphics Driver Confusion - BSOD HP Pavilion dv9500

My wife has a 32 bit Vista laptop whose service tage translates into a dv9657cl.  A few days ago she started getting seemingly random BSODs.  When I got a chance to see it, it referenced file nvlddmkm.sys with a stop code of 0x116.
It seemed like a display driver problem so I did a Google search on the error, was taken to an NVIDIA website were I downloaded and installed the latest GeForce driver.  I rebooted and gave the laptop to my wife.  I felt very good about myself.
A few hours later she gave it back.  Trying to watch some video from Facebook gave her the same BSOD error.  I went to the HP Driver page, and was prompted to Scan your system for out-of-date and missing drivers and software.  Seemed easy enough although I was told I needed some additional software for HP to do the scan.  OK.  I downloaded some framework software and assumed I would get a scan result.
I did not.  Instead it translated my dv9500 to dv9657cl and wanted to know if I needed drivers or to report a problem.  Reporting a problem took me to screens that addressed specific error conditions, none of which were the nvlddmkm.sys problem I was encountering.  Choosing drivers took me to a page for my laptop and OS.  The graphics drivers expanded into 3 choices , each of them saying something to the effect that each selection contained the video driver for the supported notebook models and operating systems.
What?  So not only am I not getting a scan result showing me my outdated drivers, but now I have to guess which driver to download.  Since I've already given HP my model number and OS, shouldn't they be able to tell me what graphics driver I need?
And what's the scoop on that Scan my system for outdated drivers debacle?

    Hi @boweasel ,
Thank you for your query, I will do my best to assist you!
Your wife was getting random Blue screens. When you had a chance to check the notebook it referenced this error "e nvlddmkm.sys with a stop code of 0x116.  This does seem to indicate a driver error.
I am unsure why the HP scan you system for out of date and missing drivers and software did not work.  I am unable to explain why it failed or why the incorrect product was show.
HP does not recommend using drivers from the manufacturer's sites as they have not been tested on your system.  The ones listed on the HP driver download page are tested and may have been modified to perform correctly with your notebook.
Here is a link to Downloading or Updating Software and Drivers for HP Computers
I suggest you run the  HP Support Assistant   to aid with HP updates and resolving issue.  The HP support assistant will also list your computer and its exact model  under system information to confirm that it is a 9657cl as you stated in the first line of your post.  That would also be why the auto scan detected it as such.
If the service tag and the HP support assistant states it is a DV9657cl  then that must be what you have.  Here is the HP Pavilion dv9657cl product specifications page so you can compare the product numbers to confirm this.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
As HP produces many models of the same for different regions. it may list more then one driver for your unit. This is to cover all of them.  You would need to select the correct one for the  specific  device in  your system or run an automated tool to select it for you. ( HP Support Assistant)
If you input one model and OS and it detected a different model it may have confused the scan for drivers option.
    I hope this helps.
    Sparkles1

  • Audigy 4 pro/"non pro" driver confus

do audigy 4 and audigy 4 pro drivers differ? the newest pro is only beta and a few months older than the "non pro". also, despite having bought a 4 pro, it never says so, neither in the system or when using autoupdate (installed products: Sound Blaster Audigy 4, DR release 2.5.0), auto update does not tell me to download the non pro driver though. I'd be glad if someone could tell me which driver to use

You find the latest drivers (fits for X-FI & Audigy 2 & 4 serie) from station-drivers.
These drivers are even WHQL (eg. passed MS quality test).

I would first reboot the computer and then try to open FCP again.
If that doesn't work, you might trash FCP preferences.
Download FCP Rescue to help with this.

  • USB drive confusion

I have 2 USB drive connected to the hub and both mount. Airport disk utility lists only item, and that is named after the base station, not the hard drive. Should not 2 drives be listed under the same name as is seen on the desktop?
The disk utility in the menu bar also lists just the name of the base station - selecting this to mount manually mounts both drives...
    Mark

Does the specification for the AEBS claim to support multiple USB devices?
Yes. The new square 802.11n AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) supports multiple USB printers and/or USB hard drives.

  • Twain Driver confuses with wrong scanner

I have two Brother MFC 8860DN on my network. I have had no problem scanning from my own Brother MFC. Then it had to go in for repair, and while it was away, I was printing and scanning to the other Brother printer. I am using MAC OS 10.6.x
Now it is back, I am able to print to my own Brother machine. However, when I go to scan, it will only scan from the other one. I have tried uninstalling the printer drivers (there is only one Brother printer installed currently) and even reinstalled the scanner driver from Brother's website. No matter what I do, I cannot get it to scan from my own machine.
I tried unplugging the other machine, but then I just get a message from Adobe that it cannot find the scanner.
However, when I go the System Preferences, and I go to the scan utility, Mac OS scans directly from my own scanner! Adobe does not.
    Help me please!
    Jonathan

I have figured it out and it isn't so easy to find! Brother has a Control Center that is installed on the computer. It looks like this:
Under the model name, on the top left, when you choose the drop down menu, you should see this:
Click on OTHER, and it will bring you to the next dialog box:
Where the IP address is specified - that needs to be changed to the correct machine. Once I did that, it scanned perfectly.
Strange because this did not affect printing. Probably because each driver is separate for each printer. But there is not multiple drivers for the same scanner.
    Thanks for your help anyways.

  • Adding seagate barracuda drive confused about cables

I have a seagate barracuda 7200.10 Ultra ata 160GB HD
    I'm installing it on a G5 tower.
I'm following the apple guide for this: http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/073-0806.pdf
The black cables on the G5 are smaller and much different looking than the back of the Seagate. The picture of the replacement/second drive in the apple pdf has the same HD pins as mine (a long data cable pins and a four prong power pins)
How do I mount this drive?

Hi Joseph, ATA/IDE/PATA drives won't work in a G5, you need a SATA drive, though there are ATA to SATA adapters, they may not fit in the regulsr installation place.

  • Hard drive confusion

My daughter wants sims 3 on our macbook (model 2.1, 1gb RAM, OS X 10.4.11)
Apparently there is not enough space on the harddrive.
I checked on finder - get info and it said my hard drive has a capacity 0f 74GB - I recall it was originally about 120Gb (MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857D).
I am not an IT guru by any stretch (which is why I macs) but cannot figure out why i can only find 74GB and not 100+.
I realise application, system etc are seperate but they dont seem to account for the 'missing' 45gb?
    Advice most appreciated

Hi gscyprus, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857D is your CD/DVD drive btw.
I checked on finder - get info and it said my hard drive has a capacity 0f 74GB
Did it not list Free Space or Available below that?
My daughter wants sims 3 on our macbook (model 2.1, 1gb RAM, OS X 10.4.11)
    Oh, oh...
    FOR MAC OS X
    * Mac OS X 10.5.7 Leopard or higher
    * Intel Core Duo Processor
    * 2 GB RAM
    * ATI X1600 or Nvidia 7300 GT with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X3100.
    * At least 6.1 GB of hard drive space with at least 1 GB of additional space for custom content and saved games
    * This game will not run on PowerPC (G3/G4/G5) based Mac systems, or the GMA 950 class of integrated video cards.
Sorry, no way, even if you upgraded the OS, the MB 2,1s both have the GMA 950 Video chip.
I realise application, system etc are seperate but they dont seem to account for the 'missing' 45gb?
Lots of hidden files & folders in OSX, but if there really is that missing, (I don't think so unless you replaced the HD, because they came with 60 GB or 80 GB drives from the factory.

  • DV6000 hard drive confusion

I have a DV6325us and I want to put a bigger hard drive in it. I'm looking at the WD Scorpio Black 320GB/7200. It has an interface listed as SATA/300 or SATA 3GB /s I know that I will only get 3GB/s if the rest of the system supports that speed but my question is will it fit?
Is there any advantage to 7200 rpm vs 5400 rpm in this pc? The price difference between the drives is only about $10.

You are correct SATA is SATA.
I went online and found a illustrated explanation of changing the drive and showing that there is a connector used that must be transferred to the new drive.
I find it rather annoying that the HP manual in its, also illustrated, section on changing a drive neither shows the connector or mentions it.
I don't have the PC here in my hands because it had to be returned for a second mobo replacement.

  • IDisk and external hard drive confusion

My idisk is not working, how do i fix it? error 5016.
Is this separate to my external hardrive that is also not working? excuse my ignorance on such matters.

    Hello & welcome!
    Different problems.
iDisk was killed by Apple on July 1st, you need to remove your login & PW from the iDisk or MobileMe Pref Pane.
      afpNoServer                   = -5016, /* Server not responding */
There is no iDisk Server anymore, so it can't respond.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum, how to move MBR to sata (make it drive #1)?

I am not sure I am phrasing the question correctly, so bear with me. I have a K8N Neo4 platinum with the SiI3114 controller and sata ports 4-8 (I believe its what they are calling PCB 1.x) with bios v1.D. I moved the board to another box and installed winXP on it. I was running it with IDE hard drives. Everything was working great but the OS was running really slow so I bought a SATA 300 mb/s drive and pluged it into SATA1 (I read about using ports 3 and 4 for raid but I do not want to use the NVraid at all, it is disabled). Then I proceeded to reinstall win XP. In the setup, I deleted the original C partiton and created one on the sata drive and rebooted so that there would be no "C" drive confusion by the winxp setup (have had that problem before and this keeps it from happening). Went through the setup and the sata was correctly reported as "C". Told windows to install itself there but it told me that it needed to write to MBR on the old c drive but that, since I had deleted the partiton, it couldn't and had to format it. So I knew that something was wrong.
So I rebooted and disabled the ide bus that contained the old IDE drive and just left the CD ide bus enabled. WinXP installed fine with no complaints. Then it rebooted and I re-enabled the ide bus in the bios. It wouldn't boot into the partiton I just installed winxp on! To get it to boot, I had to use F11 (the bios boot menu) and select the sata drive. Went through the whole setup winXP thing and rebooted. Same problem, it wouldn't boot the sata drive. :(
As long as that ide bus with the old ide drive is enabled, it won't boot the sata drive! I have rearranged the boot order on the bios every way possible. I opened up the box and moved that ide chain with the old ide drive to the ide2 port and put the dvd drive on ide1. I made the old drive slave and the prior slave master. That didn't fix it either. How do I tell this motherboard that the 1st drive is the sata drive? How do I tell it the MBR should be there not on the old ide drive? How do I fix this? Thanks!

Thank you for your replies! Hans, thank you I will give it a go again doing full formats all the way. I usually use the full format when installing winXP but I did things in a different order than you instructed so I will definately try it.
Aicjofs, thank you, There are 3 hard drives in this system currently. There is the ide hard drive that used to be the "c" drive (a western digital 160gb ata133 7200rpm 8mb cache) and a second ide hard drive that is an extended partition with 1 logical drive with data on it (western digital 300gb ata133 7200rpm 8mb cache). Then there is a sata hard drive in sata1 port with 2 partitions one primary and one extended. The extended partion does have data on it as I moved stuff there after I got winXP up the 2nd time (western digital 250gb sata II 7200rpm 16mg cache).  Right now, I have the ide drive with data on it as ide2 master and the old "c" drive as ide2 slave and it is unformatted and contains no partion information (I deleted the partition  after I installed the SATA drive and installed winXP). XP won't boot. What happens is that, if I take the winxp cd out, it gives me a "no system" error. If I leave the WinXP cd in it boots that disk. However, if I use "f11" and choose to boot the sata drive, winxp comes up just fine. If I disable the ide bus with the two ide hard drives, it boots winxp just fine.
Edit: bios is v1.D. It feels like this mobo is telling windows setup that the master ide drive is the first disk and to ignore everything else. It feels like if I can just tell the mobo that the sata drive is the first disk then everything will work . It is late night where I am now, and I've been fighting with this since the afternoon so I might have to goto sleep but I will be back at it tomorrow and will go though what Hans instructed. If anyone has any otehr ideas, I'd really appreciate that as well.

I have an external hard drive that I used with my mini mac.  I want to use it on my MacBookPro.  I plugged it in found it on my computer, it flashes seemed okay until it tipped over and came unplugged to  the computer.  I set it back up turned it on and the grren light sometimes flashes.  I read an article that said I needed to format the drive, I followed instructions and did that.  I will download tomorrow my pictures.
    Question
How do I know if this is working
does it record everything on your computer?
How do I see what is there?  on the drive
confused please direct me to help

it may be very basic but I still don't get it,   the instructions are basic too so I'm sure I'm missing some thing here.i don't know how to copy  data and copy it back
I don't see any indicaters  to do so.  I'll try again, , it's on a laptop and I don't want it connected all the time, just to secure some images.
    how  do i copyu...
maybe I'll try a 'zip' drive instead?? But I don't understand them either, hard to be a dunce.
and by the way, my computer has been freezing up on me lately had to turn it off and on, what have i done to it!!
I just connected it again and it shows as a number22but nothing happens when I click on it...shouldn't something happen here? It seems to be empty as well as it should since I followed instructions on formatting.  so what now?
This is trying your patience I'm sure, you may just forget about helping me I just don't have a clue
but  if you can help, I am listening.

  • Lost-how do you install x-fi driver for arch 32bit

k,  i have tried installing the linux x-fi driver for my sound card... but im sorta having trouble installing the driver.
i sorta find the instructions arch wiki to install the driver confusing... how do you install it? im really lost, and im very new to linux.... but i do got computer smarts...

The wiki page (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HCL/Sound_Cards) doesn't cover installing drivers for creative soundcards as such. They should be installed automatically. However it doesn't mention the x-fi at all. I am not sure what the procedure is for your card. Are you sure it hasn't been autodetected? Also you should read this article if you haven't already. • Can I have 2 flash drives?

I have an IMac from 2009. The OS is Mountain Lion latest version. I have a San Disk 32 GB Flash Drive which I used to backup my photos. The icon (SanDIsk Secure Access Manager) for the San Disk flash drive is all the way on the bottom of my desktop with the other icons. I am thinking of buying another San Disk flash drive - a 64 GB to backup my songs in ITunes. Will having 2 flash drives confuse my IMac and cause problems? Should I buy my second flash drive from a different company than San Disk so I don't confuse my IMac?

I'm talking about the actual Icon for the Flash Drive that is mounted on your Desktop and not the one for the Access Manager that is on your dock or wherever.
If your Flash Drive and Hard Drive Icons are not showing up on your Desktop like in my screenshot above? Click on your Desktop to bring Finder up on the Menu Bar, then select Finder / Preferences / General and make sure that the box for External disks is checked.
Close the Finder Preferences and then try changing the name of the Flash Drive mounted on your Desktop.
