Driver-less network printing using samba

Hi, I recently re-installed arch on my laptop, which has no printer connected to it.  Before I had been able to print through a printer which i had connected to an ubuntu box on my home network.  All i did to get this working was to install the printer driver on ubuntu, then share the printer using samba.  After i had shared the printer on the ubuntu box, i was able to see it in the Printers section of KDE Control Centre in KDE 3.5.9.  I was then able to use the printer without installing any drivers.
I've attemped to redo this setup, however i cannot seem to get it working.  If someone could tell me where to look for info on how to do this?
Thanks

  • Wifi network printing using Canon Pixma MP600R

    Hi, we've just bought the MP600R printer to use as a wifi network printer for three macs. An emac, an ibook and a macbook. All the computers are running different versions of the Mac OS from 10.3 through to Leopard (housekeeping!)
    Anyway we've read all the troubles with Leopard so are prepared for the problems but the other probem we've encountered is that the first computer connected perfectly well (it has a 10 x 4 operating system) but since then none of the others will communicate with the printer.
    Is this something to do with registering mac address with the printer? Has anyone set up more than one mac attached to the MP600R before? Any suggestions gratefully received. Life is too short to be this puzzled. best Livia

    Hello Livia,
    I have an MP600R that is being connected to wirelessly via 10.4, 10.5 and XP.
    The first step with the configuration is choosing the wireless network the MP600R will connect to. The second step is setting the ip address; either static - which means you enter the numbers, or dynamic -which means the wireless router sets the address. Both of these functions have to be done when the printer is connected to the computers USB port.
    Once the printer is connected to the wireless network, then on the Mac's you use the More Printers > Canon IJ Network setting to find the printer and print to it. When you browse the printer will be displayed with its MAC address in brackets.
    For those that are not able to connect to the printer, you may find that they are using different ip address to the Tiger Mac and MP600R. Check your network settings on all machines to ensure they are using the same address subnet (typically the first three sets of numbers in the address).
    If the addresses are on the same subnet, then there may be something wrong with the driver software. When you go to add the printer, do you see the MP600R after selecting More Printers > Canon IJ Network?

  • Printing to network printer using JDK 1.3

    Hi everyone,
    We have the requirements from a client to enable them to be able to pick a printer from anywhere on our network and then send a report to that printer through a web application.
    We are restricted to using the 1.3 JDK on Weblogic 6.1
    I have searched this forum for info on how to print to a network printer and I have gotten lots of the code samples that look like the one below but I can't seem to get it to work.
    Any suggestions on how to accomplish this? Or what errors I'm making...
    Here is the error:

    Here is the sample code:
    import java.io.*;

              PrintTest pt = new PrintTest();
              pt.printAsText("This is a test");

         FileOutputStream fos = new
         FileOutputStream("\\\\BCHYDRO_TREE\\cpp_07SE01_hp8150dn_ps-pcl.cpp7.gvd.lm.bchydro.ca");
         PrintStream ps = new PrintStream(fos);
         ps.print("\r");
         ps.print(sSummaryStatement);
         ps.print("\f");
         ps.close();
         System.out.println("Print Job Sent");
         catch(Exception e)
         System.err.println("Summary Statement Did Not Print: " + e);
         }// end function printAsText()
    }

    Hello,
    I am also working on a very similar assignment and I was wondering if you have had any luck with your original post problem. I would appreciate it if you would post any discoveries that you have made as I believe we are travelling down the same road. Thanks!

  • Query to list computers with a specific network printer using sccm 2007

    Hi to all,
    I really need help to  create a report taht lists  all the computers which have a network printer "MAXXX" installed.I would like to do it using sccm 2007.
    Thank you in advance for your help.
    Regards,

    CM07 does not collect this information, Printers are a user setting and therefore you will need to create a script to inventory the printer for each user then you can have CM07 collect & report on them.

  • Need help connecting to network printer using xfce and cups

    Hello
    please can someone assist me with setting up a printer.
    I am running arch and xfce desktop.
    I have an Epson Stylus Photo R800 USB printer connected to a wireless Belkin all-in-one Print Server.
    I do not know how to connect to this printer.
    I am not conversant in CUPS or network printing and would very much like to use the printer.
    My arch box is connected through cable to a wireless router.
    The print server is connected to the wireless router and the router confirms the print server is attached to the network.
    The print server IP address is 192.168.0.100.
    The printer server has a web interface which I used to set wireless and TCP settings. I should say that I went into this interface and configured the print server which is totally usable and fine from a Vista laptop using wireless - vista laptop "sees" the print server and prints over wireless, therefore I know the server and printer are working together and all the print server settings are fine. I dont know how Vista connects, it just does!
    I tried installing gutenprint and foomatic, went into the CUPS server page (localhost:631) and found my printer but I'm not sure if my connection string (socket://192.168.0.100:9100) is correct. I've tried several values and several Epson drivers from the CUPS web interface, all to no avail. I just get this message:
    bash-3.2# lpstat -t
    scheduler is running
    system default destination: Epson
    device for Epson: socket://192.168.0.100:9100

    printer Epson now printing Epson-0. enabled since Sat 26 Jul 2008 22:53:35 BST
    /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed
    I have no desire to be a CUPS expert nor a networking expert - I was rather hoping someone could guide me through the process, I have tried reading web links (google) but do not understand various pages and instructions.

    EDIT:
    SOLVED!
    the problem was that gutenprint needed to be installed.
    I looked at the rastertops file in /usr/lib/cups/filter and it was very small, handfull of lines, but refered to gutenprint (whatever that is).
    "pacman -Q gutenprint" revealed it was not installed.
    All is fine now.
    GREAT!

  • Wireless network printer using print server

    I have a USB HP LaserJet 3015 printer connected to a print server, Level One FPS-3003 and then connected using RJ-45 LAN cable to my wired/wireless LAN switch router. It works correctly with all my Windows XP and Vista pcs on the LAN wirely or wirelessly.
    I recently bought MBA and configured it to connect the printer wirelessly. Before that, I connected the printer directly onto the MBA and it works like a charm. Once I complete the setup and I tried to print a page from Word Mac 2008. It failed. The print job showed that the Printer Paused and job status was stopped. I tried to click the button of Resume Printer and the printer became Printer Ready but the print job status remained Stopped. I clicked Resume button (Resume printing of selected jobs) and the printer changed to Printer Paused.
    It appears to me that the print server does not like Leopard. I look at the print server menu and the OS requirements are stated Windows 98 SE/ME/2000/XP/2003 and HP-UX, Unix, Linux and RFC-1179 LPD System. Is there any workaround to make it work with Leopard. Thanks!!

    Usually you'll find all the info you need listed under unix or linux (print server manual). Oh, but I see the manual is for Windows only.
    The easiest printer setup will be to plug the printer into USB port 1 and use IP Printing > HP Jetdirect protocol. No Queue name. Refer to manual page 50 - TCP/IP port 9100 equals HP Jetdirect protocol.
    For scanning, you can try the TWAIN-SANE drivers:

  • Printing with user codes on an INFOTEC 2245 network printer

    I am trying to print over a windows printserver to an INFOTEC 2245 network printer, using samba. Though I can download a printer driver, there is no possibility in system preferences to specify a user code, needed to get access to the printer. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

    foow wrote:
    using consecutively the manufacturers driver,
    If you used the INFOTEC driver from their web site, you will need to run the following command in the Terminal (/Applications/Utilties):
    <pre style="overflow: auto;font-size:small; font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; color: #222; background: #ddd; padding: .3em .8em .3em .8em; font-size: 9px;">sudo chown -R root:admin /Library/Printers/RICOH/</pre>
    This assumes that your printer has the PostScript option installed. You can then enter your UserCode under the JobLog section of Printer Features in a print window.
    the Gutenprint driver and the generic Postscript driver. No joy.
    Neither of those drivers contain options to set user codes.
    What puzzles me is that I can print to that printer, with user codes, using CUPS and Samba under Linux. I also tried to use the Linux PPD, or the part relating to user codes, in the OS X PPD, but that did not work either.
    There are two PPDs for use on Linux. If your printer has the PostScript module installed, you could use the PostScript PPD from http://openprinting.org/foomatic-db/db/source/PPD/Infotec/PS/Infotec-IS2245PS.ppd
    Enter your user code under Printer Features > Feature Sets: JobLog
    If your printer does not have the PostScript module installed, you can use the pxlmono drivers from http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/pxlmono
    I probably have to conclude that the drivers that are accepted by Snow's CUPS do not provide for user codes at the moment.
    There should be no problem getting UserCodes to be accepted -- at least with a direct connection bypassing the Windows print server.

  • Print driver is not shown in "Print Using:" menu

    I have a HP psc 2410 printer that I have connected directly to my Mac, but I want to connect it though my Windows PC which is my home server. The printer works fine when it is connected via the USB cable and the driver listed after "Print Using:" in the add new printer box is called "hp all-in-one 2.2.9". When I try to add the same printer via the Windows network I see it the printer, but when I try to find the driver in the "Print Using:" menu, I don't find it. How can it be there for the USB connection, but not for the network connection? Where do I find it, if it isn't in that driver list?
    Thank you!

    Print drivers written using the older Mac printer driver model specifically list the type of connections they support. Most of these old style drivers do not support Windows printing. I think that is what you are seeing.

  • Smartform -Network printer format Issue

    Hi,
    I can print fine using my YPCC default printer.
    But When i do through network printer FORMAT is getting Disturbed( Values are printing in next line).How can we handle this? Do we need to do some driver program modifications?
    Here are the parameters in Driver program
    CALL FUNCTION fm_name

            archive_index        = toa_dara
            archive_index_tab    = arc_ind_tab
            archive_parameters   = arc_params
            control_parameters   = ls_control_param
            mail_appl_obj        = ls_recipient

            mail_sender          = ls_sender
            output_options       = ls_composer_param

            wa_itab              = wa_header
          IMPORTING
            document_output_info = document_output_info
            job_output_info      = job_output_info
            job_output_options   = job_output_options
          TABLES
            wa_dep               = item_itab
          EXCEPTIONS
            formatting_error     = 1
            internal_error       = 2
            send_error           = 3
            user_canceled        = 4.
        IF sy-subrc <> 0.
          WRITE: / 'ERROR in passing vars to the smartforms '.
        ENDIF.
        ls_composer_param-tdnewid = space.
        ls_control_param-no_dialog = 'X'.

    YOu need to modify the smartform not the driver program to print all lines the way you want by changing font size, reducing line length...etc..etc..
    It's printing fine on the default PC printer, because, it uses windows printer driver to render the output, where as SAP network printer uses SAP printer driver to generate the printer commands, there's always difference in the output between the two drivers.

  • DeskJet 970CXi - Windows 7 - Network Printer - Drivers solution

    Hi all, i was looking for a solution to install my Deskjet 970CXi as a network printer, using Windows 7.
    I didn't find anything directly concerned the network installation but only for local printer through USB port.
    Many people are bored and tired about this issue.
    So i decided to try by myself and using an idea taken from another thread ..... now it works really fine and it is recognized by the system as Deskjet 970CXi !!!
    Here's the solution I've found
    First part written by panther3001
    1)  in Windows 7, click the start menu
    2)  in the search field type "run"
    3) click on "Run"
    4)  type "hdwwiz" and go to "OK" - note, you can type "hdwwiz" directly on search box, or add the command "run" in the start menu ( http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-happened-to-the-Run-command  )
    5)  click "next," then click "install the hardware that I manually select from a list." click "next."
    6)  click "printers" and "next"
    7) select "use an existing port" and go to "USB001." click "next" (you don't have USB cause the printer is on the network) .. choose LPT1 instead
    8) click "windows update".  This causes Windows Update to look for ALL printers that exist for Windows 7, and lo and behold, The driver for the 970cxi now shows up!!!
    9)  select this driver and continue on.
    second part discovered by myself
    10) install the printer as local printer and then try to print the test page, you'll get error, don't worry and delete the print process.
    11) close the window displaying the printers and other devices
    11) click the  start menu
    12) choose Devices & Printers
    13) click on add printer
    14) choose Network, wireless or Bluetooth
    15) now Windows shows you 2 printers (one on the net and the other on your PC)
    16) choose the printer connected through the printer server
    17) from the drop list choose HP Deskjet 970CXi
    18) DONE !!!
    Following this procedure i performed the network installation of 3 Deskjet 970CXi, one is mine, the second one is my brother's printer (at his home) and the last one is in my office.
    Please let me know if this works for  you also.

  • Network Printing: Epson Stylus Pro 9600

    Forgive me if I sound like n00b, since I am new at this Mac administration thing. I got stuck taking care of a small network of various Macs at work. These are in our graphics design dept. They have an Epson Stylus Pro 9600 that they have been using, mainly with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
    Anyway, as far as I can tell, they were using the Epson via AppleTalk/Bonjour. The problem is that I was told from on high that this is a big no-no. So, I tried to setup the Epson on our Active Directory network. I assigned it an IP address, and made sure it was connected. The two main users were able to see it with the new IP address in the Print setup utility, and everything seemed ok.
    When I tried printing something, however, the job hangs up. Finally, it will give an error that it could not communicate with the printer. The odd thing is that everything appears ok, and I can ping the printer address from the machines in question. Any suggestions?
    The machines are a mix of G4/G5s all running 10.4.8.

    If the Epson driver supports network printing, it will be called something like Epson TCP/IP, and will be found after clicking More Printers. Is that what you're using?
    If you're using the Gimp-Print driver (included in OS X), then you must be using IP printer > LPD or IPP or HP Jetdirect. You'll need to read the documentation for the printer (or print server if that's how it's connected) and find out which protocol(s) is supported. TCP/IP raw (or socket or port 9100) is easiest because that equals HP Jetdirect protocol, and only the IP address is required. If LPD or IPP, then you need to find the device queue name (sometimes called port name), because this is required in Printer Setup (it's part of the address to the printer).

  • Fooling our digital copier/network printer

    Hi,
    The office just got a digital copier that supports netwoprk printing using PCL6. THe machine is made by Sharp (Model AR-M257)and the only "drivers" they seem to provide for the Mac are PPD files which only work for the PS version of the machine which we don't have.
    Since the network printer supports PCL6, can I somehow fool the printer by using a "generic" driver? The printer supports page size up to 11X17.
    Thanks.

    Gutenprint offers a PCL6 driver for network printing. You can download the driver from;
