  • How do I back up files to external hard drive in order to upgrade operating system?

How do I back up files to external hard drive in order to upgrade operating system?

Buy yourself a portable hard drive from WD or the like.  It should have a capacity at least twice that of your machine hard drive.  Then follow the instructions that come with it; it is quite straightforward.
I have a similar machine to you by the sound of it.   After the initial back up, it is just a matter of topping up every couple of months or so, plus whenever you do to back up any major upgrade.
A portable one is good because you can store it with relatives when not in use which gives protection in the case of fire or theft.
I use two backups.   One, an external HD permanently connected for my Time Machine and the second, a portable for the reasons I gave.

  • What is Invaild Drive: F for iTunes upgrade mean?

Upgrading the new iTunes version 7.2 has been challenging. Everything run find until the very end when it says Invalid Drive: F:/. How do i upgrade the iTunes latest version if this mysterious Invalid F drive wont let me complete the upgrade process?
    Message was edited by: lpickeri

i know i am replying to my own post, but this is for all of you who are having the same problem. After a week of trying to figure stuff out, 3 hours worth of time with Apple's technical support, i fixewd the problem. First my iPod, when plugged into the USB port, my computer kept saying that nothing was there, when i tried to upgrade my iTunes to 7.5 version, it wouldnt let me, my computer kept reading Invalid Drive: F:/, i had to use someone elses computer to make a copy of the 7.5 version on to a disk, then i was able to uploaded and run it to my computer. The second part of this trick, was having to get iTunes and my own computer to recognize that my iPod was in the USB connection, finally once i upgraded to 7.5, as soon as i plugged in my iPod into the computer, iTunes recognized it, i quickly went straight to Restore Ipod, turns out that my iPod had a "BUG" thats why the invalid F drive was showing up, thats why i could not upgrade to 7.5, and how a bug got into my ipod sense everything i have ever downloaded and uploaded has been off of Apple.s website, they assure that their songs are infected free, but i beg to differ since it took 4 years for my iPod (which was a week ago) to actually have a serious problem.

  • New Install of MSCS for an Upgraded Abap System

We are currently on NW04S ECC 6.0 on WAS 700 in a MSCS, Oracle 10g.  Our problem is that we are moving to new hardware and our current system uses the old MSCS (which is an upgraded system originally installed at 4.7 640 (perhaps earlier (4.6c)), which to me means that the Central Instance resides in the MSCS in the SAP Group.  Our plan is to install a clustered system and do a DB restore or copy over to the new hardware.  I have done the install and realize now that the ABAP MSCS install for NW04s ABAP creates the cluster a little differently – in that it looks like the Java (Portal) cluster.  Only the SCS and enqueue are in the MSCS and the CI and all Dis are outside of the MSCS.  This creates a problem for me in that the SCS is using the 00 system number, that on our old system the CI had, so our gui is now pointing to what would be the wrong system number, as it looks like the gui must point to to the CI system number for connection to the message server.  So, I guess this means a reinstall for me and switching the system numbers.  I also don’t know exactly how high availability would be created in this new setup unless you put an application switch in front of your CI and Dis, like you would with the Portal, to direct gui requests.  With the old MSCS the cluster would know if the CI failed and move it to the other node, but since it resides outside of the cluster, you have to have some type of external director – right?

    Hello Jack,
even you have upgraded from 6.40 to 7.00 you will need to convert to new HA structure according the note 1011190 to avoid the problems with next upgrade. In 700 the CI and DI are not the SPOF (see also
<a href="https://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/e0b8cd93-f1e9-2910-c186-86bfff3dac63">here</a>) and you can configure logon groups via the message server.
In case of hardware change better to take the system copy guide and install new HA architecture - it will save you manual conversion (SAP note 1011190).
    best regards

  • Altec Lansing driver needed for Model ASW0170510BK Speaker system

I need the driver for my Altec Lansing computer speakers. The speaker system is model number ASW0170510BK
I have tried numerous phone numbers at Altec Lansing and they all go to the same recording stating technical support requires a call Mon, Wed, or Friday between 8;30am and 5pm Eastern time. Good luck getting anyone to answer the phone. With all the changes at Altec Lansing there seems to be no support for older speaker systems.

I understand that you are looking for the drivers for your Altex Lansing Speakers. Normal speakers do not have drivers, they are literally just and output device for the audio that comes from your audio card.
I hope I have answered your question to your satisfaction. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a wonderful day!

  • Which drive bay for an SSD as system drive?

Hey people. I just bought a 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 with 8 cores at 2.93 GHz. I also bought a 120GB SSD from OWC to use as the system drive. My question is: does it matter which bay I use for the SSD? I'd like to install the SSD in bay 1, because bay 1 seems more appropriate for a system drive, but I don't really know if this matters. Is bay 1 faster or have some kind of priority access to the CPUs? This machine came with a 2TB HDD in each of bays 1 and2. They are configured as a Mirrored RAID Set, but I think I will set them up as 4 TB regular storage. Thanks much for any helpful replies.

Or do I have less efficient air flow?
    Less efficient.
It is obscure, and does not make a LOT of difference, but now some heated air can leak back through that vacant 1/2 inch space and enter the front of the main intake fan in place of a little bit of cooler outside air. With a full 1 inch drive there, the potential leak is plugged by the standard-height 3.5 inch drive.

  • Driver update for Win 7 USB issue on nVidia chipset systems now available

This patch is needed for the TouchSmart 600 AIO Desktop series if you haven't installed it.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/Driver-update-for-Win7-USB-issue-on-nVidia-chipse...

The update is not part of the desktop Win7 update disc from MS or HP  - Microsoft has not yet integrated it into Win7, and it is not yet available on Windows Update (it is likely to hit there sometime in January).   It was available too late to get it out on HP Update before the holiday break.  I don't believe there have been any rolls to the Win7 upgrade disks.   I do recommend (while still on Vista) running HP Update and installing all applicable updates  - PRIOR to doing the Win7 upgrade.  Also - I'd double check the drivers page for your system for any Vista updates as well,  best to do any driver/BIOS/Video BIOS updates prior to the Win7 upgrade process.  I know that some of them were created before Windows 7 was out - and may not want to install if it sees the newer OS.
As to the fix - this could manifest itself in many ways - but essentially - this resolves system flakyness with USB devices attached .  Some internal devices (card readers, touchscreens, some Wireless LAN interfaces) connect via USB - so they could be affected, even if you haven't hooked up anything to your system externally.
Not sure just what problems you were experiencing, so can't say this was the cause (and will be the fix) - but if it applies to your system - I'd definitely give it a shot.    I checked a couple of systems that had this update - I see it now on the software drivers and update page for them, so it looks like it rolled out OK.
    Happy Holidays...

  • Multiple Hard Drives: one for system & applications, one for backup

I am planning the upgrade of my hard drive setup. Presently, I have only the original 74.53 GB internal drive that came with my June 2004 G5 1.8 dual CPU. I have two goals for the upgrade. First, more hard drive space. Second, a drive for automatic backup. Since I am running OS 10.4.11 and not intending to upgrade to 10.5 at this time for application reasons, I will be using something like Carbon Copy Clone for the backup software (not Time Machine, which requires OS 10.5). My thinking, so far, is to install a 1 TB internal drive for system and another internal or external 1 TB drive for the backup. In perusing the discussions here, it looks like an external drive is always used for the backup. Is this true or would an internal drive work just as well for backup? I want the backup to be as free as possible from any corruption or problems that might arise on the system drive or other computer parts. Does the Firewire or USB connection of an external drive offer a greater amount of freedom from potential corruption as opposed to the direct SATA connection of an internal drive?
I realize that burnt DVD’s offer the greatest amount of freedom from corruption but one doesn’t burn a DVD hourly, daily, weekly or so on. Hopefully, if a problem arises my work underway is residing on the backup drive unaffected. I’m not sure how close in time this can be. I imagine this probably depends on the backup software used and how often the backup is run. I’m not yet fully aware of the options.
For the internal system drive is there any good reason to partition it? I f so, why, and in what way? Do the OS and applications need to reside on the same partition? If not (or better that they don’t), how should a 1 TB drive be partitioned?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions on the best configuration of my hard drive upgrade.

    1) The backup drive is best to be external (security from computer failure).
Yes. I am not sure about the "in some ways" my esteemed colleague qualifies.
    2) The external backup drive should be connected by Firewire (ability to be bootable & greater speed).
Yes. Just beware that some of the Western Digital models have presented problems. Not the drives themselves but the enclosures. [List of Western Digital bootable and non bootable models|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9022456#9022456]
Is a Firewire connected drive any less vulnerable to damage by computer hardware failure than an internal drive?
Yes & no. The yes: I don't know about G5s (they use a different connector from the G4s and earlier with which I am familiar) but in some computers the drives will share the same controller. If the controller goes then all connected drives can be corrupted. The no: Then too, I have had two Firewire drives be corrupted. One was by trying it with a PCI card (not what you're using) that was incompatible with my model computer. The other was when the power source in the enclosure went bad.
This is almost leading me to think that 3 drives would be the best! One internal for OS system & applications (1 TB), one continually connected for auto backup (my original 74 GB), and one (a bootable clone) attached only during occasional backups (2 TB).
The more the better. I usually buy drives in size increments that make sense for my configuration. I have two 120GB internal drives so I bought a 250GB external drive for backup and partitioned it into two so I could just back up one internal to one partition and the second to the other.
I'm perplexed with both your feelings about burnt media. I was not aware of this and fortunately have not experienced problems. However, it is only recently that I gravitated from 700MB CD's to 4.7 GB DVD-RW's for backups. I've been using Maxell
There's backup and there's archiving. Backup is for having a copy of what you're actively using. Archiving is storing stuff that is unlikely to change. Optical media is lousy for backup because files are constantly changing. Backing up a 120 GB onto 4GB media either requires a super organized person or you're spending a day sticking DVDs into your computer.
Optical media is less lousy for archiving, but still not great. Where's the floppy drive on your computer? Where will the DVD drive be in 15 years? It's also a lot faster archiving onto hard drives, and the cost of drives has come down to where the per GB cost is about equivalent of less than high-quality, archival-grade DVDs. Yes, drives change too, but it is also easy to copy from drive to drive. I have items archived on drives that are over 10 years old and as long as I make sure I keep on top of being able to connect those drives to a computer they are usable.
BTW: I tried to quote your messages for this reply, went to "Help" to learn how that is done and found this: "If you want to quote specific text from the original message, click Quote Original to add all the text from the original message to the Message box." I could see no such button "Quote Original". Can anyone please tell me where it is?
There's a '"' icon in the compose window when you type a reply. If I'm doing a lot of quotes (as I did here) I use that, then edit out the bits I don't want. Otherwise I copy and paste the text and add a > before the line to get it to appear in the special format.

  • Before upgrading my system from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion I had taken a backup of iPhoto in my external drive. But now when I try to open that package, I'm directed to app store to buy new iPhoto. How can I retrieve my photos without buying iPhoto?

Before upgrading my system from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion I had taken a backup of iPhoto library in my external drive. But now when I try to open that package, I'm directed to app store to buy new iPhoto. Why would apple install iPhoto by default with Snow Leapord and make us import all our photos in it at the first place, and now ask for money if we want to retrieve our photos back on mountain lion? What if they make contacts a paid app with the next OS upgrade, and then bully us to pay money if we want our contacts? This is something very dissappointing on Apple's part. I need answers here.

I fail to remember if the installer gave me an option to keep my applications.
The Mountain Lion installer will not delete applications. It will only mark applications, that are not compatible with your current system with a "forbidden" sign in the icon. And you cannot launch them.
Does your iPhoto icon in the Applications folder look like this?
Then your iPhoto version is incompatible and cannot run with Mt. Lion. If it is iPhoto '11, with a versionnumber starting with 9.x.x., you can upgrade it by downloading a newer version from the Apple downloads site  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1650.
But if you have 8.x.x, you need to buy an upgrade.
