Driver Wars - DP5/Audio interfaces vs. Core Audio

Dear Digital Music Users:
Is anyone currently using Digital Performer 5.0 and/or using an outboard audio interface to record vocals and guitars on a Mac Mini? Audio/Midi Set-Up recognizes my MOTU micro express for midi routing, but on the Audio side, it "sees" the Tascam US-1641, but the input and output level controls are grayed-out. Also, the facility inside of Digital Performer for accessing the driver config shows only Core Audio as a choice.
It looks as though there is a download for an update that has Core Audio implications listed on the apple.com downloads page, but I don't want to download anything until I hear that someone is actually using this machine for digital music production successfully. I love this Mini, but it has to make music.
I just read the thread from earlier this year re: Firewire audio devices; the Tascam
is a USB device but, perhaps, you've had other connection/driver experience since then ?
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
SuckerFish

I agree about the Saffire. It is an amzing interface!
The other way that I used to get around latency is this...
1/ Direct monitor on the card. That is, set your USB/Input balance on the Mbox
2/ In logic record enable a track. Set up a send to a reverb bus, and set it to 'pre fader'
3/ Turn your fader right down to kill the direct signal.
You will have your system latency on your reverb but hey... it's reverb. If your latency isn't TOO big this should be acceptable.
But trust me, you'd get amazing results from the Saffire! The EQ and Compression strip on the inputs (optional) sound great. I loved mine, going to buy it back!

  • How can I just use a generic Realtek audio driver without "Beats Audio" interfering!?

Beats audio is terrible! I just want to have a flat EQ with no stupid sound effects enabled. The only way I've been able to do this so far, is to uninstall the audio driver, and just use the generic windows one instead. But what I would like to do is use a generic Realtek audio driver, and completely remove Beats Audio from my computer.
After uninstalling the audio driver that comes with my laptop, I tried getting a standard Realtek driver from their website. But when I install that, Beats Audio reappears! This is so frustrating! How can I uninstall Beats Audio? I want it gone forever! I can see from searching these forums that this is a common problem. But none of the solutions have shown how to just use a standard Realtek driver without this Beats Audio rubbish.
Can anyone tell me how this is possible? I'll stick to the generic windows driver if I have to. But it would be nice if I could just use the Realtek drivers as they were meant to be.
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply. But you've misunderstood the question. I know how to uninstall the sound driver and just use a generic Windows one instead. But what I'm actually looking to do, is install the Realtek audio driver without Beats Audio. Thanks.

Why in the world would a person use 2 soundcards makes no sense to me .Onboard sound is crap i have never liked it ......,boards should come empty no network? card or audio because that crap they use on the motherboard is a crap . I have all that crap on my board disabled because i have a fibre home network . I see no use for copper either the cable companys should all go fibre they don't want the initial cost because they are cheap .Fibre will last alot longer than copper .We arein the year 2009 not the 70's come on .

I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

If you still have a use for it it's definately worth it. You can upgrade the ram to a maximum of 6GB and run the current Yosemite OS. Hard drives are cheap and it's not that difficult, here's a step by step guide https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+24-Inch+EMC+2134+and+2211+Hard+Drive+Rep lacement/8968

  • G-Tech G-DRIVE Q 500GB Quad Interface Hard Drive or LaCie d2 Quadra 500GB?

    Hi,
Okay I was all set to get the Lacie d2 Quadra 500 GB drive for $296.00 Canadian as I'd heard from people on this site and others it was a good one to buy.
Then I was on apple.ca yesterday and saw the G-Tech G-DRIVE Q 500GB Quad Interface Hard Drive for $319.00 Canadian and I get Macworld and that is always on the Top Product list. Should I get the G-Tech one instead for only $23.00 more?
Thoughts? Does one have more features then the other? I see the Lacie has a one button backup option but not sure about G-Tech.

Yep, I understand, hardware geekdom can be very confusing.
    Amazon.com has a good prices on LaCie -- 500 GB D2 HD Quadra @ USD $183

  • Can I use a Protools HD interface as core audio for Logic 9?

I am moving to a studio that already has Protools HD running on Mountain Lion.
I don't especially like PT, so my question is... can I just use the PT HD hardware already there and run Logic and my AU plugs without using TDM?
And if I do, how would it compare to the RME Fireface 800 I am currently using?
Or would I be better off taking the RME and switching between the units depending on who was driving in the studio?
    Thanks in anticipation

    Yes, higher latency...
Avid/Digidesign never put a lot of effort into their core audio drivers because they would rather have you purchase their hardware which uses proprietary drivers.
There is an I/O limit but from the looks of it you won't be coming close.
Offhand I'd say you will be missing the RME hardware but it may work for you.
Keep us posted as to how it's going.

  • HP ENVY TS 15 Notebook PC: Problems installing audio driver (High Definition Audio device)

    Hello all,
My product is the HP ENVY TS 15 Notebook PC.
    Product number: E3B65PA#AR6
    OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit
A few days ago, I  upgraded my windows from windows 8 to windows 8.1 and found that no sound coming from the HDTV when connecting my HDMI cable however video is perfectly fine. I was completely baffled because the audio was working perfectly fine before upgrading to Windows 8.1. I have tried several solutions posted on other forums, such as installing other drivers, and uninstalling the IDT High Definition Audio Driver and then scanning for a hardware change. I have checked the HDMI cable and it is working fine with other laptop.
Device manager is showing 2 device :
High Definition audio device ( Showing yellow traingle)
      IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
When I am opening the properties of High Definition audio device it is showing :
This device cannot start (code 10)
    {Operation Failed}
    The requested operation was unsuccessful.
If anyone knows how to fix the problem, please help me
    thanks in advance

    Hi:
The IDT audio driver (notebook speakers) appears to be working fine.
The problem is probably with the Intel graphics driver which  controls the HDMI audio.
My recommendation would be to install the latest Intel graphics driver from the link below and see if that fixes the problem.

  • DVDRAM Drive not detecting audio CD

The GT20L DVDRAM Drive in my Probook 4510S is not detecting audio CD's or software CD's but it does seem to run video DVD's OK.
I have tried the Microsoft Fixit tool, which says there is a problem but it can't fix it.
II have checked the registry for upper & lower filters but there are no filter entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrenControlSet\Control\Class\(4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318.
I have tried creating a registry subkey.
All above is as directed at support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us.
I have uninstalled the driver, removed the drive, refitted the drive and allowed auto-detection and installation of the drive, all to no avail.
I have, of course, tried updating the driver but each time the system says that the best driver is already installed.
Do you have any suggestions for other possible fixes that I can try?
    Thanks

It is a hardware issue. The drive has multiple lasers for multiple functions and it is very possible for the CD function to stop working and the DVD function to be fine. The only fix is a replacement drive. Here is one for sale on eBay:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Probook-4510s-4515s-4520s-4525s-4530s-DVD-Burner-Writer-CD-R-ROM-Player-D...
This video shows how to get inside and do the replacement. As the ad says you will need to swap faceplates over from the old drive. If you need more help post back.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ5ZPHiyvEA
This is way more than you need to do. After removing the keyboard you can remove a screw holding the DVD drive in and then slide it out.

  • Drive Stopped Burning Audio Discs

My Disc drive (G5 3 years old) seems to have stopped burning Audio discs using Toast. It seems to be doing data discs ok, but it appears domestic and computer players will now no longer accept my audio discs (Even both my Macs). Its always worked fine in the past and nothing has really changed to my system. Is this the sign of an ageing drive and do I therefore need a replacement? Is there anything I can do? I have tried burning different speed settings.
    Thanks folks

If the G5 is also having trouble reading the discs it sounds as if the drive is producing really bad burns. Having either the cd or dvd side of things stop working properly is a classic sign of a drive on its way out. The drive begins to produce burns with much higher error rates, and more serious kinds of errors, than usual. All drives produce errors with each burn, but it's the kind of error and intensity of the error that matters. Drives have built in error correction circuitry that can handle the most common error type as long as they are below a certain level. Older drives often begin to either produce much higher error rates that the reading drive can't compensate for, or produce a non-correctible type of error. To make matters worse, the number of errors depends not only on the drive, but the relationship between the drive and disc being used. Each drive has firmware written to tell the drive how to write to different brands of media. Apple rarely updates the firmware on their drives, so after a few years the drive has to guess the writing strategy for each disc and this too can lead to high error rates. And to confuse things even further, companies that sell discs rarely make them, but buy them from oem manufacturers. So one batch of say TKDs may be Optidisc and another CMC and you have no way of knowing by just looking at the disc- you are thinking you are using the same discs but aren't.
So one or more of these factors is giving you burns so bad that the drive the disc was burned on is having trouble reading it, and that's a very bad sign. I would suggest from my experience with many drives that a drive behaving as yours is - one that is 3 years old - should be replaced. A new drive will only run you about $40, it will have new firmware allowing it to work with current discs, and should be faster also.
If you have access to a pc there are actually a number of programs that will allow you to test the discs and see what type and how many errors the burn has produced (I find this one of the few redeeming values of PC's). These programs are invaluable in situations like yours, and as I said, from my experience, the programs usually indicate with your symptoms very high error levels or errors that cannot be corrected.

  • Satellite Pro A300D - Driver for Multimedia audio controller

    Hi,
I have Toshiba Satellite pro A300D and one day the built in mic, built in camera and the speakers stopped working.
When i checked out Device manager i saw that the driver for the multimedia controller was not working so i uninstalled it and went on the toshiba site to installed the new driver.
When i looked up drivers for my computer they have everything except that driver!
Is there anyone who knows were i can find it?
I use the computer to work with music and i am gonna record some people soon and than i really need it to work!
    Best regards,
    Hermann

    Hi
    You are using Win XP?
Well, i had some problems with Win XP and sound as well.
The point is that Win XP needs some patches and updates before installing sound driver.
You have to install Win XP SP3 before installing sound driver.
    I recommend doing this;
    - remove from device manager the sound card and the Intel High Definition audio
    - uninstall the sound driver
    - install SP3 and update the Win XP to latest state
    - reboot the unit and install the sound driver again.
    - reboot and test the sound

  • No audio selection after loading Driver for M-Audio MobilePre USB

I recently downloaded the latest Driver for my M-Audio MobilePre USB on my Mac Pro and the audio input out put selection in the system preferences are not showing up. However it does show it listed in "Other" in system preverences, but only the volume control.
How do I get it the input and output selection to work?

I tried calling them but they said you need to have a service number, when you registered, which I got mine about 9 or so years ago and dont remember any numbers!
You need to purchase a number to talk to service, its a bunch of c#@@p.

  • Used Boot Camp 3.0.4 to split hard drive. No audio.

I recently used Boot Camp Assistant 3.0.4 to split my hard drive so I could also use Windows 7. I couldn't get audio to work. After multiple attempts to locate a driver that worked, I still failed to get it to work. I even tried Boot Camp updates 3.1 and 3.2 but get the message that it won't work without Boot Camp 3.0 (Which I cannot find for the Windows side of the drive). How do I fix this short of buying driver detecting programs over and over until it works?

It doesn't happen in every case but there have been a number of problems reported on this forum with the recovery partition scewing things up with an already installet Boot Camp partition. I avoided this complication by upgrading two MBPs in the following manner which was initially suggested by The Hatter. I have had no problems since August 2011 with these installations.
Use Yasu and Diskwarrior to prepare existing Mac OSX 10.6.8 HDD.
Clone 10.6.8 Mac partition to an ext HDD with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Restart from the cloned ext HDD and select it as the startup volume via System Preferences / Startup Disk.
Install 10.7 Lion on the cloned ext HDD
Install Lion 10.7.2 update on the ext HDD
Restart the OSX 10.7 ext HDD and test and adjust the preferences if needed.
When satisfied, clone the OSX 10.7 ext HDD back to the existing Mac HDD.
The Boot Camp partition will not be altered as to drive id which appeared to cause problems for a few people.
The recovery partition will be on the ext HDD and can be used for trouble shooting. A more convenient way to have the recovery/reinstallation environment is to create a Lion install USB thumb drive.

  • Audio Static (hard drive interference) Digital Audio

Hey Gang, I have an Apple TV 160GB connected to a projector HDMI and a Samsung Entertainment UNit via Digital Audio. Whether listening to music or watching a movie a get a 2-5 second run of static interference quite sharp over audio. It reoccurs regularly over 2 minute periods and I believe it is the HD pulling content as what else would happen repeatedly like that? I have replaced the unit to the sale result. I 'de-bundled' the cabling separating the AC Power to another AC outlet on a different circuit and running the audio cable by itself. I am at a loss to what is transmitting this interference through the audio. Any suggestions? Thanks muchly.

Update: I sat here with the ATV against my ear with a playlist going and normal slideshow going and heard the hard drive clicking away inside so this is not the hard drive making this noise. This interference is still a 2-5 second burst of static every 2-3 minutes. thanks
