Drivers for Yamaha Motif ES8

According to Yamaha there is not a midi driver for USB to Yamaha USB for the new iMac-Intel. does anyone know if there is a midi connection to imac for the Yamaha that will work? I wanted to get started recording in GarageBand, but cannot connect.

I was having the same problem with my Yamaha S08...downloaded the .sit driver from yamaha but did not work. Just last night I finally found the driver that works: http://www.global.yamaha.com/download/usb_midi/index.html#00004
maybe that will work for your Motif

  • Yamaha Motif ES8 - migrating from LP7

    Hello.
I've been using my MOTIF ES8 in LP7 for years in multi-instrument mode. I realized that my LP7 autoload file doesn't play nice with LP8 (the control surface goes haywire), and I'm now in the process of creating a new autoload file in LP8 that "resembles" that of my old LP7 autoload.
    Problem is this...
I've not been successful in copying the ES8 multi-instrument icon form LP7 into 8 - and I'd like to simply have 16 MIDI Channel in my LP8 arrange window that references the Motif and all of it's patches from the inspector window.
It may worth mentioning that I've searched motifator.com for a new LSO file for LP8 and have come up with zip.
Has anybody got this working, and if so....how did you migrate from LP7 into 8?
    Thank you,
    David

Im trying to do the same with LP7 LSO file for my Yamaha S90. if i find anything i will let you know. have you figured anything out?
    thanks.

  • Yamaha MOTIF ES8 Can't get working with Macbook Pro

I found this post but it's been archived and the person still couldn't get it working. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1076838
I can't either, I hook up the Motif via USB and change it to USB and my Mac doesn't see the device under Audio Midi, such an expensive Keyboard and it's going to waste. Half the reason I got a mac was to use it with my keyboard, never thought I'd have so much trouble. I'm using the AMS but it never registers and Logic Pro never sees any device. Not that I know how to use Logic Pro.

    Did you install the drivers?

  • Yamaha Motif 8 drivers

I am trying to connect my Yamaha Motif 8 keyboard to my imac - OS 10.3.9.
The yamaha is for OS 9 and therefore I cannot install the software for the keyboard. Can anybody help me? OS 9 classic will not work either.
    imac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

check out www.yamahasynth.com for updated drivers
lots of Motif help is located at www.motifator.com as well.
you may have to update the software in the Motif as well (see yamahasynth.com for updates and a description of the process) for MIDI over USB to function correctly. USB connection is the easiest to work with and requires no external MIDI interfaces on your Mac.
    good luck.

  • Apogee Duet for iOS with Yamaha Motif XF

    Hey guys....
I am testing my new app for the iPhone (Neo-Soul Keys) and I happen to just buy the new Apogee Duet for iOS. I have been trying to get my Yamaha Motif XF8 to work with the unit via USB, but it doesn't seem to work through the Apogee Duet iOS, BUT it works flawless when plugged into the iPad or iPhone directly.
See attached image. You can CLEARLY see that the Yamaha Motif XF registeres with iOS and all is working fine, but when I connect my USB MIDI through my Apogee Duet iOS, I get nothing.
Apogee claims that the reason why it doesn't work is because the Yamaha Motif XF is not "USB Compliant." Well even if it isn't, shouldn't the Apogee Duet just pass the MIDI signal through.

Nope.   To put it bluntly Apple really screwed this up.  The opperating system has created serious headaches for musicians and it doen't look like it's going to be fixed anything time soon.

  • Newbie with a Motif ES8 - optimum setup with a minimalistic approach?

    hi,
I'm trying to decide on the optimum setup with a minimalistic approach!
I a newbie with the Motif ES8 and am at cross roads deciding on the type of computer setup for my VST.
PC + Cubase vs. MAC + Logic Pro or Logic Pro Express?
With MAC, how far do I need to go;i.e. MACBook Pro a must?
how many USB ports (types 400 vs 800), etc?
With Logic Pro, is Express going to be sufficient for a full soup to nuts recording and mastering given that this is for a home studio setup though with an idealist running it?
I'm a one woman show and so don't need too many inputs/outputs. I'd be recording a track at a time and my songs take up less than 16 tracks.
I would really appreciate any and all responses.
    Roya
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

thanks for the detailed response PK
so, the extra USB port on the HD would facilitate a
hub type interface i.e. once you hook up another\
device to the HD via USB, you're really hooked up to
the computer.. right? and so, if I get a powered USB
Hub, this wouldn't really matter.. correct?
For the most part, you have to be careful hooking
too many devices up to a computer WHEN you are trying
to do some sound work. When they say a computer
can do ABC we sometimes think that should include D.
As for the sound interface, I already have an
Audiophile that has midi in/out, firewire to
computer, RCA jack for i/o. I know its not the high
end stuff but I hope to do a stepwise upgrade here if
    at all possible..
That actually might work, if it supports at least
16 bit 44.1 khz that is the lowest you want to go.
Ideally it should be 24 bit to take advantage of Logics
24bit environment. You might be able to run the ES8
straight into those RCA jacks if they are SPDIF and your
keyboard has the same on the back.
There are a bunch of people on Motifator discussion
groups that warn against Apple's lack of support for
Logic. Not sure if the concern is only regarding the
combination of Yamaha (Motif) and Apple (Logic).
I went and read that thread, here are some of my thoughts
    on some of this.
Can't comment on MAC, but a dear friend of mine who is an audio engineer said >he had walked away from Logic after Apple bought them out. "Straight downhill" >I think is how he put it.
Many windows users just hate Apple and their products.
I think much of it is ignorance. They will say
Macs are junk but when I ask them why
they never have an answer or say something
that is false. It sounds like this "professional"
did not even wait to see that Logic did get better.
Apple charges 200.00 for support of it's Professional
applications. You really do not need it since there are
so many experienced Logic users here that I never had
a question go unanswered. I've noticed on those forums
the same small group of people do most of the problem
solving. I am not overly impressed with Yamaha's support.
I had my questions about my keyboard answered quicker
by those forums. So I guess both companies need work
in this area. Frankly, for recording, I think the Motif
and Logic are a Killer combination. Both have steep
learning curves but once you get up to speed I think
the results speak for themselves. The main difference
in my opinion is that the Motif is the ultimate
performance tool and Logic is the ultimate studio toolshop.
After having a Motif for over a month, I am convinced
it has a steeper learning curve than Logic take for instance
that thread on getting your keyboard to record it's own
audio output. The list of things to do each time is as long
as my arm. In case you did not read it here it is.
First thing – STORE your MIX setup and SAVE the Song to SmartMedia (or USB mass storage device) before resampling it so you have a backup. You would create a mix to balance the instruments the way you like them.
    * Select a target track, then press the [INTEGRATED SAMPLING] button.
    Setup the parameters for resampling:
    * Press [F1] DEST
    * Select a TRACK and [KEYBANK] (note) into which you will record the resampled data. You can target either an empty track or the track on which you are going to play (if you are going to play along). If all tracks are full, don't worry, you can still resample anyway.
    * Press [F2] SOURCE. Set the source parameters as follows:
    - Type = Sample - with this type the Integrated Sampling Sequencer will not create any NOTE-ON data in your sequencer, it will just simply add a new sample waveform to the waveform list
    - Source = Resample
    - Mono/Stereo = Stereo
    - Next = OFF
    - Frequency = 44.1k
    * Press [F6] REC This will place the sampling sequencer in Standby mode. Set the TrggrMode paramter to Manual
    * Press Start on the sequencer and check your levels. If too low set the REC GAIN higher +6bB or +12dB, if the level is to high (clipping- you will see a lightning bolt) lower the GAIN to -6dB or -12dB. When you have checked the levels, press STOP and return to the top of the SONG.
    * Press F6 REC to start the Resample, Press [>] (play) to begin recording the resample. The Motif ES will draw the wave as it samples.
    * When the song is over press [F6] STOP. The Motif ES will take a few moments to gather the data.
    To create the .wav file:
    * Press [FILE]
    * Press [F1] CONFIG
    * Press [SF1] CURRENT
    * If you will be saving the resampled song to a SmartMedia Card set the Current parameter to CARD. To save to a USB device, set this parameter to USB
    * Press [F2] SAVE
    * Set the data TYPE field to WAV
    * Cursor down and Name the wave
    * (If desired, navigate to the subdirectory where you want to save the *.wav file.)
    * Press [ENTER]
    * The ES will ask you which TRACK and NOTE to save as a wave file. Enter the values you selected as the sample destination in the procedure above.
    * Press and hold the AUDITION button to make sure your sample is there.
    * Press [ENTER] and the Motif ES will export the sample as a .wav to your SmartMedia card or USB device.
Once you have configured Logic which are takes about
3 minutes (and only has to be done once)
and set up the keyboard which takes 30 seconds.
(this has to be done once for each session)
you plug your keyboard into your audio interface then
    Hit Record
that is the whole list, two words.
Once it is in Logic, you have many way to edit it
and process if needed. The midi is much
easier to manipulate and there are more
ways than the ES has keys. Plus you can add to the
sounds with the internal instruments which are
as sophisticated and as high quality as the ES.
Then if your happy with it you can create MP3's
and burn Red book compliant CD's for
    commercial duplication.
It really is a complete setup.
But at any rate I'm going to do some more research on
another scenario, i.e. what about MAC and Cubase? As
you may know Yamaha just acquired Cubase..
I dont think I would be the best to comment on that.
Maybe ask one of the Gurus on the unofficial
    website for Cubase, The Cubinator.
    Sorry, I just couldn't resist.
you've been very helpful - thanks again
    cheers,
    Roya
    Cheers!
P.S. I agree with Dave, If you have a Macbook
Pro you dont need another computer. If you
wanta desktop whatever reasons I understand

  • Yamaha Motif XS8 -  USB Midi to Logic 8 Express, anyone??

    Hi Everybody!
I have just purchased a Yamaha Motif XS8 to run with my Logic 8 Express.
The people at the store told me that I could set it up just like I had done with my midi controller through a USB straight into the Mac. But there is abso no sound, signal coming from the Motif.
How do I get the Motif to talk to the Mac via USB Midi?
The driver for the Motif is installed, and the mac can find it on the Mac's integrated Midi-setup. Cool. Fine.
    BUT...
Am I doing something wrong? Cause I can't get no signal from the Motif in Logic??
Can someone please explain how to set up a right set-up when you have a :
    Motif XS8 ->USB -> MacBook Pro/ With Logic 8-> USB- M-Audio Firewire 410 Interface?
I want to get to know the Motif with time and really "walk the walk" and learn as I go, but,
    some sound would be nice......
    Anyone??
Thanks in advance, anyone who can help......
    Best,
    Applecake

You are making 2 kinds of errors:
    1. you are recording in MIDI tracks whose task is to transmit all the data to external synths (just the way it's happening to you).
You have to use Intruments tracks and assign a Logic (or AU) instrument to each of them.
In this case the MIDI data will be forwarded to those and not to your Motif.
    2. the Motif USB interface is a MIDI interface; if you want to record the XS audio into Logic you will have to link the Firewire interface (that should be installed by default into the XS8) and install the right drivers (if nedeed).
Another way is to send the Motif audio into Mac using the audio outs via an audio interface.
BTW refer to the Motif manual to know more.
    cheers

  • How can I use the sounds of the Yamaha Motif XF6 in Logic Pro 9?

I have Logic Pro 9 on my Mac Book. I also have a Yamaha Motif XF 6 synthesizer. Instead of using Logic's software instruments I would like to record the sounds of the Motif directly into Logic.
I have been told that an audio interface is necessary for this. What kind of audio interface would be good for this? Any in particular?
And, once I have obtained the interface, what steps do I need to take to hook up the Motif into Logic to utilize the Motif's sound bank?
Detailed steps would help, as this is new stuff for me.
    Thanks!

Since this is a user forum only, and your questions will take a lot of time to answer you might want to check both the Logic manual and the XF6 manual. The XF6 has possibilities such that you may not need and Audio interface if the Firewire option is present.
Also you have a built in USB MIDI interface as well, you will need to download the Yamaha MIDI driver.
Read Exploring Logic Pro, especially chapter five, you can record your performance via MIDI, edit it and then commit to audio.
    Dig in.

  • Using  Yamaha  Motif  8  on  G.Band 1

I am trying to use my Yamaha Motif 8 in Garage Band.
I can get it to work, but it only plays limited Garage Band effects.
Also, when playing on Motif 8, its not quite as loud over the Imac
as it is when I bring up a G.Banb keyboard and click one of those keys with my mouse.
I'd really just like to play all the Motif 8's effects in G.Band.
Is there maybe a more up to date version or another program I need?

I am trying to use my Yamaha Motif 8 in
    Garage Band.
How do you have it connected to your Mac?
-- I have an input and an output from my "Motif 8" keyboard.
Those two end merge into one end that plugs into the Mac.
can get it to work, but it only plays
    limited Garage Band effects.
What do you mean by GB Effects? Do you mean GB instruments?
--- Yes, Garage Band instruments. I'd like "Motif 8" instrument sounds to come through Garage Band.
I'd really just like to play all the Motif
    8's effects in G.Band.
This is confusing. Are you trying to record sound shte Motif makes, OR are you trying to play GB instruments?
--- I'm not trying to play GB instruments.
I'm trying to get GB to let me play "Motif 8" instruments and effects. When playing Motif 8 instruments, I would like to record when ready.

  • How to Import Yamaha Motif XS 8 Patch Names into Logic?

    Hello -
I am a new user of MAC plus Logic. I just installed Logic Studio with Apogee ensemble. The virtual instruments are working great and I am able to browse the patch names by banks and catagories. Just downloaded a logic patch file from yamaha site for my Motif XS 8 Synthesizer. The has a .LSO extention. When I click on the file, the logic environment window opens up and I can see the patches. How do I import these patches into my project environment.
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Open up the source song, the one you downloaded with the environment (old Logic songs were *.lso files).
You'll probably see an environment window, showing a multiinstrument - it's this that has the bank messages and the patch names defined.
Select the multiinstrument, and edit -> copy.
    Now close that song.
Open up your default startup template song (the "destination" song), open the environment on a layer of your choosing, and select edit -> paste, to paste that multi-instrument into the environment of this song.
Change the MIDI port on that multi-instrument so it's sending to the port your hardware is connected to. Close the environment window, and resave the song as your startup template.
(You may wish to preassign the 16 multi-instrument sub MIDI channels to arrange tracks if you are regularly sequencing them, to save time so these are already assigned to tracks when you start.)
Now for every song you start, it will have your setup for the Motif.
    Does that help?

  • Connecting Yamaha Motif XS8 Keyboard Workstation To Logic

    Hey everyone!
I am in a really really reeaaally deep hole. I just dropped $3000 and got a Yamaha Motif XS8. I know how to use Logic Pro 7, and I know how to use the Motif, but I have no idea on how to connect them and make them talk to each other. I basically want to record using the sounds in the Motif in Logic (in midi format, not audio) so i can see the notes on the screen and not record as audio files. I have my Motif hooked up with a fire wire and midi cable. I don't know what to do to make this work. I know it can be done. I have called several places, everyone says it can be done, but no one knows how and now i am finally turning to my fellow apple forum members. Lots of people use logic pro here unlike yamaha support or other places so i hope someone has an answer.
This is a very common thing to do, but very complicated, and no one seems to have an answer! =[
I have called everyone possible... woke up at 8 in the morning and made calls all morning. Not one person knew, not even the apple logic pro support guy.
    anyways
Thank You Very Much!! ---in advance!

Ok, it's not hard, and the detail will vary depending on what you want to do exactly, but here goes:
There are two basic things - communication between the keyboard and Logic, and communication from Logic to the keyboard.
Connect up MIDI cables going both ways - keyboard MIDI OUT to computer MIDI IN, and computer MIDI OUT and keyboard MIDI IN.
Run Logic, and play the keyboard - watch Logic's transport, and you should see MIDI activity as you play. Cool - that part's done!
For the second part, I'm assuming you want to use the Motif multitimbrally, ie you want to be able to sequence multiple tracks of different sounds coming from the Motif with Logic.
Open your autoload song, and open the environment. Select New -> MultiInstrument, name it "Motif". Click on all the little channel boxes in the multi to enable all 16 channels. Set the multi's port to the MIDI port that your Motif is connected on.
Back on the Motif, make sure you turn MIDI Local mode OFF (this divorces the keyboard from the Motif's sound engine - because we will be playing it through Logic) and put it into multi mode if necessary.
Now, back in the arrange, click hold on a track and select Motif -> Motif 01 to assign the Motif channel 1 sub-instrument to an arrange. As you play the keyboard, you should hear the Motif playing. You can now sequence away with Logic.
If you regularly sequence like this, assign all the 16 Motif sub-instruments to tracks, and save this as your autoload, so it always comes up like this when you start a new song.
Any queries or problems, post back and I'll try to help.
Does that help clarify things for you?

  • Mainstage & Yamaha Motif 8

I have my yamaha motif 8 hooked into my Mac, but Mainstage 3 is only recognizing the midi interface as the device in the screen control inspector. Also, Mainstage is recognizing the notes I am playing (on the top center bar-not sure what's it's called), but there is no audio coming through.
I am able to hook up my M-Audio Oxygen8 and play through that with no problem. So I think it may be something in the setup configuration of my board or Mainstage.

If Mainstage is recognizing MIDI data, it's connected properly. The MIDI interface you're using to connect the Motif can be renamed in Audio MIDI Setup(apps>utilities). For convenience, I usually name the USB MIDI cable or other interface after the keyboard it's connected to for easy reference. Are you getting no audio from the Motif or from Mainstage or both when you play the Motif? Are you trying to play Mainstage channel strips with the Motif? If so, make sure a channel strip is assirgned to it. Where is the audio out from the Motif connected?
See the snapshot below. Is the Motif assigned to the channel strip? Select an instrument channel strip. In edit mode>instrument channel strip inspector>MIDI input, see what keyboard is assigned.

  • Yamaha Motif MO8... Help!

I have Yamaha Motif MO8, how do i connect to GB and use as MIDI Controller?
I use M-Audio Keystation last time... and when i plug in, GB can detect....
I've install all the driver that i download from Yamaha.
My current connection for motif are using 1/4 inch from MO8 audio output to M-Audio USB Pre(audio interface).
    Please help.... Urgent!!!

    1. When you open 'Audio MIDI Setup' and click on 'MIDI' do you see something like this:
only identifying the Yamaha instead of the UM1 - and are the lines drawn as shown here?
    2. In the Yamaha's settings it might be worth trying setting 'Local Control' to off - this will mute the Yamaha's internal sounds (though in fact this may not make any difference to the MIDI out) - see p258 of the manual.
    3. This is a more likely cause of the problem: in the Yamaha's settings, set 'MIDI In/Out' to 'USB' (it very possibly defaults to the MIDI socket and you can't use both at once) - see page 259 of the manual.
(If you don't have the manual right-click on this link and choose 'Download...':
http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/emi/english/synth/MOTIFE1.pdf - I hope this is the right one, the site isn't wonderfully clear)

I Own a Yamaha MOTIF 6 Workstation (Keyboard but I dont play keyboard)) and would like to use its sound engine to play GarageBand or any other MIDI file I can access.  I'm not sure how to get the iMac and MOTIF to talk to each other so what I produce on the iMac will play through the MOTIF sound engine. I'm new at his so any help would be useful.  Ultimatley I'll play the sound through an awesome Mackie PA and create a virtual band to jam with. Thanks in advance. Jerry

Thanks, I think I got it working now
I have a feeling that this shouldn't be this hard, but maybe after a few days I really understand what's going on under the hood. For what it's worth, here's my current setup.
    MOTIF:
Using one patch, a performance patch in MASTER mode
    Knob/Slider mode set to Zone
Each Performance part is sending MIDI data in Channel 1
Each knob and slider has its own MIDI CC assigned. Knobs 40-43 and Sliders 50-53
Saved this MASTER mode patch to memory slot 128 and named it so that stands out for live playing with MS
(There are tons of other settings, but I don't think they are relevant to this so I try to keep this short)
    MainStage 3:
Started with a fresh Electric Piano template (=concert)
Assigned knobs and sliders in Edit mode
    Assigned footswitch to "Next Patch"
    Saved this for future setups
Now all knobs and sliders control only setting in MS, which is what I tried to accomplish in the first place. I think main stage manuals do a good job explaining what everything does, but I'm still looking for best practises, demo videos and so on -- i.e. what I should do.
So for now, I'm sticking with my keyboard, unless the urge to buy Korg Kronos X becomes unbearable
