Drives and desktop icons: possible to change sides?
Hey, I was wondering if there's any way to set new icons from drives and new content to show up on the left side of the desktop as opposed to the right side. I prefer to have my adium on the right, but whenever a drive or something loads, it ends up under my buddy list. Not a huge problem, just slightly inconvenient.
Thanks,
Will
I called apple on the topic... they said the desktop items automatically load on the right hand side, but can be moved and will open in the alternate location from there on. Thanks for your answers!

Hard Drive and Desktop Icons Have Disappeared From Dessktop
I can locate all the files and access them via "search" and clicking on them, but can't see them on the desktop.
Problem started with difficulty using Spotlight, which eventually led to a freeze and when I restarted, the images were gone.
Have already tried: (1) Disk First Aid, which found a couple of minor problems, but was unable to complete the verification test, stating "underlying disk needs repair" and "1 HFS volume checked needs repair. . . (2) Trashing the Finder preference (which had no effect) . . . and (3) Restarting — both from the existing OS, as well as the Mac OS X Install CD. Tried several times with the latter (holding down the C key), but it did not override the damaged system.
Can't remember the last time I had to reinstall a system, bu it probably was at least 5 years Ago, if not longer, so am hoping to avoid that. Also have found a few directions online (and in an Apple document) that require rewriting a script, which scares me even more, since I've NEVER done that and am concerned about messing up my system even further.
Am hoping there's an easy fix that does not require taking the computer in for service.Sorry. I am NOT using 10.2.
I am using 10.4.11!
Also working with the original set of disks that came with the computer.
The first time I tried to boot with the Software Install disk, I assumed it had not booted properly, because the entire desktop (such as it was . . . i.e., just a few assorted folders, apps down the side and icons for the install disk appeared with with it.)
The same thing happened when I held down the shift key while booting.
Both times when I tried to use Disk First Aid, a message stated that it was not compatible with the current OS.
And no, I did not think to see which OS was active either time. But I wouldn't be surprised to find 9.2 (Classic), . . . one of the operating systems identified on the disk) which was available as an option at that time, for users still using software that had not yet been updated by the manufacturers.
But even if I had thought of that, I probably also would have tried to avoid loading OS 10.0.4 if I didn't have to. (Why take an unnecessary step backward?)
Fast forward to today: My computer is still working. Miraculously, Spotlight has reappeared (on its own). I think I can access all or most of the files on my computer by using "search" . . . but the only ones currently on my desktop (and reappearing after a shutdown) are the few that op up at random, when Iaccidentally hit the "G" spot.
The icons for the hard drive and other peripherals still don't show up . . . which, in combiation with the missing file icons suggests to me that I still have a problem, which I would rather repair now, than wait for it to multiply or cause a major, irretrievable crash. -
I've lost the finder and desktop icons
Purchased new iMac 10 days ago but did not immediately transfer data from old computer. When I did, I transferred from a Backup on Time Machine using Migration Assistant . I did not merge the two users I had the New Jon (new computer) and the Old Jon (old computer transferred to the new one). I transferred applications and documents but did not transfer the computer and network settings. My reason for two users was that I knew there were programs on the old iMac (10.9.5, early 2008) that did not work on 10 and I was hoping to cherry pick.
However, the new iMac (10.10.2) wasn't seeing any of the desktop files in either user from the old Mac. I decided to delete Old Jon keeping New Jon and starting over again. When I did that, none of the Old Jon applications were deleted and are usable for both users AND the Finder is missing. Clicking on Finder it says that the Finder can't be opened. The finder had been working on both users on the new computer up to the point at which I deleted Old Jon.
Interesting to note that at one time (I don't remember if I was upgrading from 9 to 10 or it was a 10 upgrade) but the Finder on the old Mac also disappeared. I was on forums and seemed to be a problem that many people had. For me, the only thing that seemed to work was opening Activity Monitor and force quitting Window Server and after that the finder and desktop icon showed up. So I'm thinking it must be a program or file I have on the old computer. So, I thought I'd try downloading 10.10 figuring if I reinstalled I would get where back to an "out of the box" computer.
Even though it said I was downloading 10.10 the new install said it was still 10.10.2. All of the applications from the old Mac were still there and there was still no finder. I created a couple of new identities in the New Jon computer. Both of them have access to the finder but the Main identity does not. I have noticed that if you log under under one of the new identities and then go to the Main identity the Finder is there - but not if you log into the Main Identity first.
Can anyone give me hint as what I might do to where I might look or steer me to another forum? Hope this isn't too confusing. Thank you so muchRe-install the OS.

Desktop Icons moved to right side of screen and are stuck! Help please.
Can anyone please help me? My desktop icons have moved to the right side of my screen and I cannot move them. I have tried 'View Options', right clicking the desktop, 'Finder Preferences' and even a couple of terminal commands suggested in different forums. Nothing helps. In addition, I can't drag to desktop anymore. Anyone? Please. This has consumed me for almost a week now. Thanks.
rightclick on the desktop, click "show view options", choose any thing else as "snap to grid" in the "show icon preview" field.

Restore Desktop Icons after Resolution Change
I often give talks using a projector. The projector has a lower resolution than my display. This causes my desktop icons to pile up in a jumble. Worse, when I return to the standard resolution after the talk, my desktop is still in a mess!
I seem to recall earlier versions of Tiger/Leopard could remember the locations of the icons and restore them after switching back to the native resolution.
Is there a solution for this? Possibly I have a preference set wrong so that the restore does not take place?
Sorry if this is already answered but I didn't see it come up searching the forums.

I never tried it, but if you have one Space for your presentations and another for your usual work, will the unseen desktop still get the icons "mangled?" I would think the resolution change would only apply to the Space that you are using. Maybe not.
Consider this, then - create another user just for the presentations. My rhetoric question would be, would the icons of the original user still get "mangled" if you used the new account for the presentations?
If neither of these solutions work, then the alternative terminal solution would work. You would simple restore the original .DS_Store file. You could write a simple script to do that.
I'll follow your ideas shortly, thanks .. and they make a lot of sense.
BTW: are you a Nero Wolfe fan?
Yes
I've got them all, I think, been reading them for over 20 years, and re-read them every couple of years or so.
I have the entire corpus, the A&E shows, including widescreen double-length European versions and all the OTR shows. Guess that makes me a fanatic
I also look for the "Pastiches" .. I've got 6 of Goldsborough's but haven't found others.
Nero Pastiches have not interested me, but I have many of those of Holmes' plus the Sacred Canon, the Brett TV series, almost every movie, the Russian series, OTR, etc.
Believe it or not, I learned a great deal of computer diagnosis from these stories. Their value greatly transcends their genre. You get to look past the obvious.

Recycle bin and Desktop icon ini file
Hello hope this is in the right section, Toshiba P750 Laptop,
Every drive has a recycle bin which is annoying as my last laptop didnt have it, I cant remove the folder, C drive is fine.
Also there is a desktop icon system ini folder my libraries folders somtimes 2 of them which is annoying me as well, I delete them next day there back, any idea how to fix this woulkd be appreciated.
Thanks
Regards
Solved!
Go to Solution. When you elect to show hidden files, you'll see things like the $Recycle.Bin folders and desktop.ini files. That's just the way Windows works.
Desktop.ini files, BTW, are what tell Windows Explorer how to lie about what it sees in a folder.

When you post here, always tell us which Satellite P750 you have. See the label on the bottom.

Desktop icons after screen change
Hi,
I use my macbook pro every day at work with a 24" apple display (the one w/the bundle of plugs that includes usb/mini display/power). I take my macbook out of my bag, then plug in the screen, click my mouse, and the computer wakes up. When I go home I just unplug everything and put the computer back in my bag.
When I get my computer home and turn it on, my desktop is normally very screwed up. The icons are not on the screen, or the resolution is normally off. To put it back I just have to change the screen resolution to a lower one, then put it back on 1440x1200 (or whatever the macbook pro 15" display is at maximum). Then my icons go back to normal etc.
Sometimes this happens in reverse - when I plug in my display to the macbook pro I have to change the resolution twice (lower then back to normal) to get the icons right.
This whole thing seems quite wrong - does anyone know of a setting I can change to fix this or if I can do something else?I have the exact same problem, MacBook Pro 15" 2.33 GHz and the same type of Apple display. I use the display at the office, disconnect, bring my PB home, and when I wake it up the PB acts like the display is till connected - no desktop icons visible (although strangely, it shows the Dock and the Finder Menu) until after I restart.
Clicking "detect displays" doesn't work, neither does clicking the highlighted configuration.
My daughter also has a problem with her MacBook and her Apple Cinema display, which has to be set as mirrored or it won't display anything, it somehow isn't detected the way it used to be. Why I mentioned this is because I never had this problem before, and neither did my daughter. It started quite recently, so I guess it is related to a system software update.

Possible To Change SID / Retain Data?
I have a Oracle 11.2.0.3 VM running with a 12.2 GB database size. Currently I would like to take a snapshot / clone of the Oracle database 11g and replicate it. Obviously I would change the Linux OS hostname / IP parameters to avoid conflicts on the LAN however I would like to know if its possible in Oracle 11g (and acceptable) to change the SID on the said cloned machine once the machine has been replicated?
Currently my SID on the above mentioned database is ATL and after I snapshot the virtual machine and get the OS parameters unique, I'd like to make the SID = ORL. Is this acceptable in the Oracle DBA community or is it highly frowned upon to make changes to a SID once there has been data added to the database?Yes you can change SID for Database after clone .
you can do that by using dbverify or recreate controlfile

Ethernet connecton and desktop icons
configured the new time capsule as an ethernet shared HD via two ethernet cable to my wifes macs. Created desktop icons for her to use (she wants to use it as a 'shared' drive for her two computers. The problem is that every time her computer wakes up the icons disappear. Any suggestions to make them permanent? Tried doing it via "log in" options (like I do with my own NAS drive) but ti doesn't seem to work flawlessy for her.
Sorry about the delay.
Right now, my wife is using FireFox for her browser, while I use Safari. It works because, this way, she has her bookmarks (for example) and I have mine. She has her "settings"; I have mine. (etc.) We all loved it when we were using the ATT Yahoo! browser I mentioned before.
Okay, the kludge I was thinking about would only give you "half" of what you wanted here, and I'm not sure it would be the important half.
If for example, you had a Yahoo home page and your wife had an iGoogle homepage, what we could do is save a copy of your home page to your desktop as a web archive, called "his," and save a copy of her home page to your desktop as a web archive called "hers". To open to your homepage, you'd click on the "his" web archive. You'd be opening the file on your desktop, so it wouldn't "update". But all the links that are in it would work, and if you put in a link to your "real" home page into the home page (before you archived the "his"), you could then click on that and you'd be at your homepage proper. So, you'd never even have to see "hers" on the way to "his".
But settings and bookmarks are trickier. Safari is set up so that you get one set of Safari preferences/settings/bookmarks/history/passwords *per user account.* So even if there was a way to install two different Safari programs in the same user account, both Safaris would end up looking at the same set of preferences and settings (etc) files for that particular account. So you wouldn't be able to segregate, say, bookmarks using just Safari.
You could perhaps segregate two sets of bookmarks using an extension like Delicious Safari or Pinbar, where you'd end up hosting two different sets of Web Hosted bookmarks. But I'm not sure that that's what you're after, and that doesn't help if you wanted to have completely different sets of extensions, or security settings, or font smoothing or font zoom levels and so on. -
Crashing When Printing and Desktop Icons
Hi,
For some reason every program I try to print from crashes. Also, my desktop icons are all generic rather than program-specific. I'm not really sure what happened. I did install new ram today, and took the laptop to work where it tried to find the printers on the network there. Something might have gotten messed up then, I don't know.
I've tried repairing permissions and get these messages:
ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root/Library/Preferences".
ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root/Library".
ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root.
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
I have a HP OficeJet 7210. When drop a document into the printers's print queue window things print fine, but every other program I try to print from crashes.
Any ideas?
Best wishes,
BruceHi,
Thanks for resonding. I launched Word, tried to print, and copied this from the error report window that popped up. Hope it is what you are asking for. If not, please tell me where the crash log might be found. In the mean time I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling the HP printer drivers.
Thanks again,
Bruce

Finder and desktop icons frozen after time machine backup
Finder desktop icons freeze every time after a Time Machine backup. *What's odd is that I can still use other apps, but I cannot select/open any item on the desktop*.
Adding to the strangeness, +is that what's left after the backup is finished is a blank space+ (beneath the HD icon). Typically, all the items on the desktop rearrange themselves to their original positions once the backup volume disappears (i.e. backup is complete).
I've run disk utility for permissions check, and all is well.
Would appreciate some guidance on how to fix.
This issue pre-dates the 10.5.7 update.HI,
Try deleting these files.
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

From what I understand, I can organize my "open applications" in Spaces. This is neat because you can easily organize and switch between open applications.
Is there a way to have different desktops and associate those desktops with spaces. For example, I have a project-specific space that I want to setup. This space would include a set of project-specific desktop icons.
Thanks for the feedback.Hi there Dr Dave,
Thank you. So I am sure you have already read all about spaces itself such as:
http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1157196&seqNum=3
There is also something called sling:
http://beta.sling.com/video/show/125635/76/OS-X:-Perfect-Windows-Management:-E
But I have not tried the latter. Spaces can have problems when used in conjunction with Microsoft Office 2008, but that is an MS issue.

The other day I was working on my iMac when the screen all of a sudden froze. iTunes was playing and continued to play, but I could not do anything. This has happened before, so I didn't panick, but just did a hard reset. I was then prompted to recover my computer from my external harddrive/time machine. This took about 10 hours (over firewire). Since then the computer works again, but the Finder window when open as well as the icons on my desktop are constantly flashing or blinking (more like periodically disappearing and reappearing) when I'm in the Finder, I'm then brought back to the previous folder I was in when it reappears.
I read that this might have to do with Stuffit, which I deleted. I also deleted the Project 179 from Canon, as it was the last program I installed on the day that the computer went glitchy. I also tried both of these:
1. click on "spotlight" on the top right corner of your desktop.
2. type "terminal" (without the quotation marks) and open it.
3. when the terminal opens, type "cd desktop" and hit enter.
4. type "rm -rf .DS_Store" and enter
5. type "exit" and enter
If it doesn't work try the follow:
1. click on "spotlight" on the top right corner of your desktop.
2. type "terminal" (without the quotation marks) and open it.
3. when the terminal opens, type "sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/" (This will empty your trash) and enter
4. type your administrator password. As you type, you will not see any character on the screen. Just type it and hit enter. (If you left your password blank, you have to make one by going to system preferences - users & groups - change password)
5. type "exit" and enter

External hard drives and desktop
Hi, and happy new year.
I use several hard drives, Firewire 400 & 800 mostly, but query would apply to USB also.
When i connect a drive it appears in a random position on my desktop ( I have a fairly cluttered desktop), is there any way to ensure that drives appear below my startup drive, nice and neat? If I'm using partitioned drives then all partitions would be nice in one neat column, rather than around the desktop. Is there away to organise them in the dock?
regards, alan bell in ukNo problem.
(1) Click on the Finder icon in the Dock. If your dock is on the bottom of the screen, it is the icon on the far left.
(2) Now, look at the menu called Finder at the top left of your screen and find "Preferences there". Or, you can just press command-, (command-comma).
(3) Anyway, once the Preference window opens select the category "General" from the choices there. You will see a list of things which you can choose to have displayed on the Desktop. Make your selections and close the window.

I am trying to run iTunes on a PC with Windows 8.1, but the setup wizard tells me there is no space on the D:/ drive, which makes sense, since my D:/ drive is a CD-ROM. When it gives me the option to save on a different drive, I click it, and it tells me "Error 2330" and shuts down. Error 2330 simply implies that the drive is incompatible, which makes sense but isn't helpful. I even tried disconnecting the CD-ROM but that didn't change anything.
It is very odd that I have had iTunes on this computer for over seven months, and this problem didn't begin until after I attempted to install the latest update. It failed to install the update, and from then on I couldn't open iTunes at all. Has anyone else seen this issue or know what I can do?I am trying to run iTunes on a PC with Windows 8.1, but the setup wizard tells me there is no space on the D:/ drive, which makes sense, since my D:/ drive is a CD-ROM.
Even though you're getting a slightly different error message, try the following user tip:
"Invalid drive X:\" install errors

Would really appreciate some help on this one. I've had a good search around... it's not clear to me where to get the 64 bit version of the driver install files.
