Drives dismounting during standby

Greetings,
I've an iMac with three external drives attached: two Seagate and one WD. All are FW800. When returning to this system after it's been on Standby I've noticed the warning message that a device was removed, much like you'd see if you just yanked a disk out without dismounting it, and one or both of the Seagate disks are gone. What I believe to be happening is that when these external Seagate drives go into Standby they're dismounting themselves...or the system is dismounting them. I would suspect the former but am not certain.
Has anyone else come across this problem? I should add that I've never seen this behavior with the WD.
Another oddity is that when powering up this system only the WD disk and ONE of the Seagate's will be present. Without exception it will take a subsequent reboot for both of the Seagate's to mount. It may be one disk or the other, it is not discriminatory and wholly random.
Thanks.

I suspect you have an intel iMac, since the G5 doesn't have an 800 FW port. Are the drives daisy-chained or are they on a FW hub?
I will ask to have your pot moved to the intel forum.

  • Left side of screen dim/slow response during standby

left side of screen gets dim during standby, slow to responde after awakened. anyone else experiencing this?
By the way, I've had the screen replaced and the monitor (cable?) replaced as well. I tried to get a new machine but they said that I had to have THREE major problems before they would replace the entire machine. BS

Mine has this, too, with an area about 2/5 of the way over that is dim after being off for a time. I've found that running the brightness up and down a few times tends to speed up the time it takes for it to adjust to a more averaged brightness. It is a bit strange that it takes so long for only a portion of the screen to warm up, and even then there's always a slight hint at anything lower than max that it isn't quite even (though it is less noticeable if you happen to be just left of center, as is my case.)

  • Drive mapping during posture remediation

I am doing ISE (1.1.1) deployment for client. The customer is using AD logon script do do drive map to a nas server. My posture remediation acl is blocking drive mapping unless I use 'permit ip any any' which is a security hole. My acl should be modified to allow the drive mapping during unknown/posture-remediation interval. Could any one suggest if you have faced similar issue.

You need to permit access to your domain controllers during posture remediation and add a delay to your logon script -

  • Iphone 6 battery drain during standby

Hello.  So I've had an IPhone 6 for several months now which is still under warranty.  A few days ago, I noticed that the battery was draining at a much faster rate than usual, even on standby.  I think the rate at which the battery drains during standby is the same as when I'm actually using it, but I'm not sure.  I thought at first that it was related to IOS version, so I upgraded from 8.1.2 to 8.1.3.  No change.  As of now I'm running 8.2, but I'm still seeing high battery drain.  On standby, the battery drains at a rate of ~10%/hour, meaning I can't take it to work without bringing my adapter too.  While charging, I've also noticed an unusual amount of heat.
Another strange thing I've noticed is that, unless I use portrait lock, some apps like Safari will immediately go to landscape mode even if I'm not holding it horizontally, and rotating the phone doesn't fix it.  Both of these issues persisted even after I updated IOS, hard rebooted, turned on/off, and did full resets.  I also tried signing out of ICloud, but that doesn't seem to have changed anything.
Anyone else suffer these problems?  Will probably have the phone looked at later this week.

I Agreed to post an update after the installation of 8.2 .. I have to say that the battery life has shown a major improvement after the update.  I also discovered what was causing the Home & Lock screen drain.  I went to settings and disable "HAND OFF" it was causing my battery to deplete at a rapid pace. However , I have to ammit that the battery performance still remained better after the update even with Hand Off running in the background.

  • Excessive hard drive activity during downloads

I'm wondering if anyone else gets excessive hard drive activity during iTunes downloads?
I've just downloaded an album and while the download was active, access to the relevant hard drive ran at ~90% access time, with an occasional drop between tracks. Pause the download, activity stops; restart and back up to 90%. As soon as the download finishes, again, back to normal.
Have tested downloading files to the same hard drive using other apps and it doesn't happen (eg. downloaded the OpenOffice installer with a browser and activity is down around 1-5%.
Using iTunes 11.0.2.25 on Windows 8 64 bit (plenty of RAM available during the download). Hard drive is an NTFS formatted SATA 3.5" (ie. bog standard non-SSD hard drive, nothing unusual).
Is anyone else seeing this? Wondering if it's a common bug or specific to this machine. If yes, is there anything we can do or is it just a bug in itunes?

    +1.
In fact my downloads appear to be I/O bound - they come no where near to max'ing out my Internet connection. It's way faster to download stuff directly to my iPad.

  • FireWire iBook 320GB Drive dismounts after iMac wakes from sleep

I've got a 320GB MyBook external combo (USB 2.0 & FireWire 400) hard drive from Western Digital. Sporatically, when my iMac has been in sleep mode for a while and I wake it up, the hard drive suddenly dismounts and is not visible from both the system profiler and from the Disk Utility program. I get the message that the disk was not put away properly.
If I unplug the cable from the drive port and plug it back in, the drive remains unmounted, but if I unplug the cable from the iMac and plug it back in, the drive re-mounts and is accessible from the desktop again.
Aside from being annoying, I can't be confident that my computer will re-mount the drive during my regulary scheduled backup, nor can I be confident that I'm not damaging the drive every time this happens.
Any ideas why this might be happening? Is there any firmware I need? I have a brand new 20" iMac (less than a week out of the box) with an upgraded processor (233 GHz) and video memory (256MB).

Ive got the same problem with a Western Digital 500GB My Book Pro on my iMac Ive tried it on a few other machines and I think its happened on them, I say think because it was only when it had happened a couple of time that I started to take notice of circumstances etc and ive only had the drive a week, downloaded what may be a more uptodate "My Button manager" from the WD site still happened but Ive got this idea that it didnt happen on one machine which may not have had the MyButton thing on at that time, have you solved it yet I am using USB at the moment.

  • Not able to add driver update during Solaris 10 installation on IBM x3550

I am facing a problem with installation of Solaris 10 on IBM x3550.
My question is not specific to IBM server.
I am trying to add SAS driver during Solaris 10 installation. I selected option "Apply device driver update" (option # 4). It is asking to insert driver disk. But only showing floppy (f) and cdrom (c).
IBM server 3550 doesnt have floppy drive and I have the driver image only in a USB stick. Unfortunately, Solaris 10 installation is not showing usb device during driver installation.
Is there any way we can add usb device to the driver update disk list??
    Thanks in advance.

  • Internal Hard drive dismounts when downloading from iTunes Store?

I am having an issue when I download content from the iTunes Store to my Mac Pro.
I have my Media Library on the second Internal Hard drive (an Hitachi). When I download content after a while -usually half-way through a download or after a few minutes if its large amount to data/content (App updates etc) -the second internal hard drive will dismount. Stopping the download and making the disk inaccessible.
The internal hard drive seems to be fine otherwise. It has plenty of space and I use it as a scratch disk for video editing HD content.
To re-mount the disk, I have to do a complete shut down, remove the hard disk (I check for dust/damage etc) and re-insert and re-start the system. If the systems down not pick up the hard drive the first time I try and again and it usually recognized then. I have tried using an external hard drive as well (not sure what make the hard disk is but its an iomega unit) and the same thing has happened.
As you can imagine this is very annoying. I hve a work around currently where I set-up a tempoary Media Libabry on my system disk and download anythin I want from iTunes and then manually move the content to the second drive-not ideal but it works. I have had this issue for a year- so I have been very patient and hoping it would get resolved through updates-as I am sure there ha to been other people with the same issue.
Can anyone help me identify where the problem is? Has anyone else experienced a similar issue? I am stumped and really not sure where to start.

    Hello Nesquik,
Yes, I did notice it too. A lot of noise when downloading, It sure looks as if there is no buffer or not enough buffer. Going back in history when there was no smartdrive
I hope they can fix it, very annoying. Not only because of the noise, but I also get the feeling that my harddrive must be degrading. If you only could say that you want to download on a different location (choosing the SSD) and afterwards moving to the Media Folder on a normal harddrive.

  • Drives dismount when I attach Firewire Camera?

I have several G-tech external drives daisy chained 800 firewire into the back of my macpro.
I need to transfer and capture Mini dv from a camera.
I patched the firewire from the camera to the front 400 firewire port.
This caused my drives to dismount.
I thought this might be to using the front bus- so I switched the camera Firewire to the back.
    The same thing happens.
    What is going on?
I haven't used firewire in awhile- but this was never a problem before.

People shouldn't be expected to stock their macs full of internal HDs if they already have useful hardware
Why not? They just spent over $3K for a fast machine, why hold it back with drives that run at half (or less) the speed of an internal SATA drive? When you figure you can get 750GB drives for ~$130 (or 500GB drives for under $90) it makes no sense to utilize firewire for editing.
The bus problems of certain cameras can be completely avoided by eliminating firewire drives from the computer. Let the camera have the whole bus.

  • Recovering files from external drive clobbered during 10.6.3 update

I have an external FW drive (500 GB WD MyBook) that was clobbered during the upgrade to 10.6.3 (The Mini this was attached to is part of the everything seemed to complete normally but the Mac wouldn't restart crew). The drive cannot be attached during boot-up, or the Mac will never get past the spinning pinwheel. If the drive is attached after boot-up, it mounts without any troubles, and DiskTools finds nothing wrong with the drive. If the drive is accessed, what ever process is using the drive will eventually "freeze". It's not a complete freeze, because the programs are still semi-functioning, it's just that what ever process is accessing the drive will not complete. For example:
    1) The Finder starts copying files, but part way through, progress stops. The Finder is still semi-usable, and the animation in the copy progress box continues, but there is no actual progress in the amount of data copied.
    2) Data Rescue 3 recovers 377.5 MBs quickly and then makes no further progress even though the "Elapsed Time" counter continually updates. I've let it run for four hours and there was no progress past 377.5 MBs.
    3) Trying to shut-off Spotlight indexing on the drive via Terminal.app results in "mdutil -i off /Volumes/driveName" never completing, but I can open another Terminal window and navigate the directory structure, 'ls', delete small files, etc.
It seems that the problem is sustained reads; however, even if the drive is just connected, something problematic will be encountered. Usually when this happens, the only recourse is to shut down because Force Quitting the blocked app doesn't succeed. Sometimes, the shutdown works fine, other times the drive must be disconnected in order for the rest of the system to shut down correctly.
Can tar and/or cp in the Terminal be set to copy all of the Mac file data (I haven't Googled that yet)? Is there an "UnstopableCopier" equivalent for the Mac?
Any other ideas how to copy the files I need to recover off this drive? The plan is to salvage what I can and then reformat/replace the drive.
    Ray

Update. It's most likely hardware trouble. I was able to get all the files off, but it took about a dozen tries. Each attempt would fail, sometimes after 1,000+ files, sometimes after less than a dozen. I could always go back and restart the copying where the previous attempt failed, so there were no corrupted files.
The problem seems like something's wrong with either the drive, the enclosure, or the firewire port/software. Now I just need to find out which. Any suggestions?

  • External drive ejected during "consolidate library" attempt

I have a recent mac mini running mountain lion with a 1 tb g drive connected via firewire 800 and a 2 tb seagate connected via usb.  The original itunes files are on the gdrive.  I want to consolidate and back up the music files to the Seagate but in the middle of the consolidation, the g drive spontaneously ejects and I get an error message saying i have ejected it improperly.  I had settings on so computer would not go to sleep so its not that.  I have run disk utility on both external drives, no errors.  I had this happen twice while trying to consolidate library and twice while trying a simple drag and drop of the itunes folder.  What's the deal?  Can anyone help?  Has anyone had this problem?
    rabbit

I have something similar on a brand new iMac 27" i7 top of the line model.  I bought a USB 3 enclosure from OCW for a 120 gig SSD. I was using it as the cache drive for Photoshop CS6.  It began to display the same issues you are describing. I brushed it off and blamed the cheap enclosure I purchased.  This all occurred 1 week ago on 1-22-2013.
On Saturday 1-26-2013 I was backing up a sweet sixteen shoot via time machine connected to the USB3 port and the drive ejected mid way of a 70 gig back up. I found that strange because I've never had a problem with that drive or the enclosure it's in. (By the way this is a USB2 enclosure)  I tried it 3 more times and the same issue occurred.  I figured it was the cable and switched it with another USB cable and this time it worked.
Not thinking much about I assumed the problem was the cable.  The next morning I realized I still had one 8 gig compact flash card in my camera and I needed to back that one up.  This time I used my USB 3 RAW STEEL UDMA card reader to ingest the work. There were only 20 images on the card. During import the compact flash drive froze on the third image. I had to force quit and redo the import again.  It took 3 times before I had no issues importing the images.  I could not figure out what the **** was going on until it hit me.
During my trouble shooting I realized the 3 drives were, when they ejected themsleves, connected to the same port in the back of my iMac.  The second one closest to the SD card reader port in the back.  That was the free port I kept switching to use these different peripherals.
I need to do a little more testing but I'm almost certain something is wrong the the USB3 ports in the back of the new computers. Never had these issues with my late 2009 iMac.
The last thing I want to is haul this machine into Apple after it took me 4 days to get it set up the way I use it for my Photography business.
    Disappointed big time!

  • Drive problem during Leopard os upgrade  - Powerbook 17

During installation of Leopard I was only given option to do an erase and install on my laptops drive. After opting out of that option the laptop will not start and is not accessible in target disk mode either.
I'd like to double check data backup before going forward. Any suggestions?

Hi, Robert. So the Leopard installer saw the drive and was prepared to install on it, but you cancelled before starting the process, and now the drive isn't seen by the installer, by Disk Utility, or in Target Disk Mode? Very odd. That sequence of events shouldn't have changed a thing on the drive.
Please check to make sure Disk Utility can't see it in Target Mode or when started up from the installer disc. If DU does see it, select it and run DU's *Repair Disk* routine. Post back with the results.
If DU doesn't see it, apparently the drive is failing or has failed, though the coincidental timing of the failure strains credulity a bit. In that case, you'll need to use a utility that's designed to see the data even on failing drives, and can either rebuild the damaged directory (e.g. DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro) or recover the data without trying to make repairs:
