Drives from old G5 not recognized in new G5

My old G5 DP 2.5 died. So I bought a G5 DP 2.3.  When I put the drives from the original G5 in the new one, it says they are not readable and should be initialized. What gives? They are both Power Mac G5 dual processors. What should I do?

I don't understand why they're not working from one G5 to another G5... they should without problems!???
Cards for G5s will be very hard to find, especially bootable cards.
Which exact models re the 2 G5s?
If you don't know the model, find the Serial# & use it on one of these sites, but don't post the Serial# here...

Trying to move my iTunes Music and other media from the main drive on my pc to an external hard drive but iTunes is not recognizing the new file location?  Ideas?

    Hello there, Underwriter.
The following Knowledge Base article provides in-depth instructions on how to migrate your content to an external drive:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
Particularly of note for your situation:
    External drive
This option requires more work than Home Sharing, but it creates a backup of your iTunes library on the external drive in addition to moving your content.
    Notes before you start:
You can use most iPods as an external drive.
Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Because of this, you can't use a Mac-formatted iPod or external drive to move your music to a Windows PC. See iPod: How to determine iPod's hard disk format if you're not sure how your iPod is formatted.
Mac OS X can read Windows-formatted iPods and drives. This means there are many ways to migrate your information from your old Windows-based PC to your new Mac.
Mac OS X: To be sure external drives appear on your desktop, choose Preferences from the Finder menu. Be sure the options for "External disks" and "Hard disks" are enabled.
Part 1: Locating and consolidating the iTunes Media folder
Part 2: Copy iTunes folder from the old computer:
Part 3: Get iTunes ready on your new computer
Part 4: Back up any music that's already on your new computer
Part 5: Copy music to your new computer
Part 6: Add preexisting music that was on the new computer back into the library

  • Mounting secondary drive from old G4 via Firewire to new iMac?

I just got my new iMac up and running (god is it gorgeous). The 'transfer files' thing in the initial install pulled all the programs and user settings from my old G4's primary drive perfectly, but the G4 has a second IDE drive in it where I kept much of the data. When I boot the G4 with the "T" held down, only the primary drive shows up on the iMac... how do I get the iMac to recognize and pull data from the other drive in the old tower?
    Drew

    Hi-
When I boot the G4 with the "T" held down, only the primary drive shows up on the iMac... how do I get the iMac to recognize and pull data from the other drive in the old tower?
This is a limit of firewire target mode, only the master drive will show.
If the secondary drive is bootable, connected to the master connector (end connector, not middle), and jumpered as master, you will be able to mount the drive in FTD mode.
Alternatively, copy the files from the secondary drive to the primary drive, and transfer from there.

  • External hard drive from older OSX not seen on new machine

My new mac doesn't see the external hard drive when plugged in. The hard drive was formated with an earlier version of OSX. The older machine died, (and I took it apart ) - I hadn't been able to burn CDs of my images in time.
Is this some sort of compatibility issue? Any suggestions on what to do will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds possible to me that the drive is inside a hard drive case that needs an updated firmware to be able to mount on a newer operating system. This started to be a problem with 10.3. Here's my FAQ regarding the issue:

  • How to transfer ring tones from old PC itunes library to new PC itunes library

I have upgraded my computer and am in the process of importing the music, apps, audiobooks, etc from my old computer & iTunes library to my new computer.  I am using the HomeShare feature to do the import and it has worked flawlessly for everything except ringtones.  When I access my ringtones in the old library, the "Import" button does NOT appear in the lower right hand corner like it does for music, apps, etc.  So, how then do I transfer my ringtone library from the old iTunes library to the new one???  Thanks for any and all help.

Unfortunately iTunes won't let you just "Copy" and "Paste" out of the library.  However, you can drag and drop files from your library into a USB drive and then drag and drop them from the USB drive into the new library.
This is not the best way to do it,
As dieselvdub noted, just copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.
Then is is an exact duplicate of the old library (same ratings, artwork, playlists, date added, # plays, etc.), not just a new library with all content

  • Internal drives from my older Macpro keeping my new 8 core from booting

I am upgrading from an older dual core Macpro to a new 8 core and found that if I install any of the internal drives from my older Macpro in the new 8 core the computer won't boot. The drives just have data on them no applications of operating software. The older boot drive won't let the 8 core boot either if its installed.
Anyone know if this is to be expected and if so why? I will have to copy 3 - 1 TB drives if they can't be directly used in the new computer.
    Thanks

I've seen a severe corrupt directory cause Macs to refuse to boot from any drive, even from CD/DVDs making it hard to repair and requiring a USB/FW case to repair/format or recovery files.
During startup the system has to scan for valid boot drives even though startup disk tells it where to try to boot from.
Also yours by default boots in 64-bit mode.
Once you have the files you need copied over, why not just reformat and clone your current system.

  • How do I remove one failing hard drive from raid set and replace with new one

Last Friday apparently one of my raid drives started failing.
As I mentioned on this forum I started getting continous beeping.
I was finally able to get the raid working at a degraded level.  I ordered a replacement hard drive which is arriving today.
(In the meantime I made twice daily backups of my work.....)
Below was the message I got from the browser based raid software:
    Blahblah 09    1000.2GB   RaidSet Member SamSung HD103SJ
    Blahblah 10    1000.2GB     Free                 SamSung HD103SJ
    Blahblah 11    1000.2GB   RaidSet Member SamSung HD103SJ
    Blahblah 12    1000.2GB   RaidSet Member SamSung HD103SJ
(See this earlier thread if you wish!)
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/727867?tstart=0
At one point when I did the checked the browser interface I saw the message Failed and Degraded
As I said, I was able to work over the weekend on the degraded system.
This morning I got the beeping again and did the rescue and now I am running a "full raid" without the notice that one raid was "Free".
In any case, the new hard drive is arriving today.
What steps should I take to incorporate the new drive into the raid system.
    I have one OS drive
and 4 tb raid drives.   One needs to be replaced with the new one that I am getting today.
    Thanks
    Rowby

    Harm,
    Regarding your comment:
Re: How do I remove one failing hard drive from raid set and replace with new one
Please tell me how to read the serial number from an individual drive rather easily, without un-installing them:
If you select the proper drive to change out, you only need to remove one drive and look at its serial number...
Step 1: Identify bad drive serial number using Areca's tools
Step 2: Turn off the computer
Step 3: Remove what you think is the bad drive based on following your numbered cable method, marked hot-swap bays, whatever
Step 4: Verify that the serial number matches the "bad drive" serial number from step 1; if it does great, proceed; if it does not match, go back to step 3
Step 5: Change out the CORRECT drive - that's the bottom line for this whole procedure
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • My computer is not recognizing my new shuffle

    Hi,
My computer is not recognizing my new shuffle and not syncing with it.  I had a shuffle before and it just automatically synced.  No little ding ding recognition of new hardware sound, no nothing.  Help
    thanks

I had the exact same problem.  Then I called for support.  I felt like an idiot when I got the solution.  Unplug your Ipod shuffle from the computer.  Then unplug the power cord from the shuffle. Now replug it into the shuffle.  Push very hard.  You should hear a click sound.  Now try plugging it into your computer again.  I hope this helps you.

  • HT1918 itunes is not recognizing my new billing address

itunes is not recognizing my new billing information

There is no need to unplug the new Apple TV in order to delete the old one in iTunes preferences. You don't need to add the new Apple TV to iTunes in the way that you did with the previous Apple TV.
Have you set up homesharing yet.

  • IMovie '08 7.1.4 is not recognizing my new Verizon iPhone

My iMovie '08 7.1.4 is not recognizing my new Verizon iPhone. How can I get iMovie '08 to recognize my Verizon iPhone so I can import the videos of my kids from there.

You might consider upgrading to iMovie 11. It would cost about $15.
For iMovie 08, I would try to import the movies into iPhoto. Then you can access them in iMovie through the iPhoto Event.

    See
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    - I would start with
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
    - New cable and different USB port
    - Run this and see if the results help with determine the cause

  • Avchd movies from lumix FZ100 not recognized by imovie

avchd movies from lumix FZ100 not recognized by imovie

iMovie does not edit MPEG2 natively. However, iMovie will import directly from a supported camera. During the import, the footage will be converted from MPEG2 to Apple Intermediate Codec.
If you hook up your camera, it should import just fine.
For existing footage that you have stored on your hard drive, there are a couple of options.
    1) The MPEG Streamclip option. With MPEG Streamclip (free) (and the MPEG2 Playback component which you already have) you can convert the MPEG2 to a iMovie compatible format like DV or AIC or h.264.
    2) You might be able to "fake out" iMovie into thinking that your hard drive footage is really on a camera. To do this, you will need to create a disk image of your camera, and move the footage back to the disk image. Alternatively, you could drag the footage back to your camera and import from there. Perhaps someone who has your camera can give detailed instructions for this. The disk image must have the identical file structure that your camera does. (This is how imovie knows it is a camera.)
Disk images can be created by Disk Utility, which comes with your Mac. It is found in the Applications/Utilities folder, and is also handy if you ever need to format a drive.
