Drives Locked!

For no apparent reason, several of my drives and or partitions have become locked. They have a small padlock icon attached to them.
When I "Get Info" to change the permissions, all the permissions are set to "Custom" and I cannot change it.

Good evening, Luc de Hemptinne,
I supposed your drives icons have a little lock, and that,
with Get Info, Privileges and Permissions are "Custom", isn’t it ?
Simply try (with guaranteed success) BatChmod by Renaud Boisjoly
(a frog eater like me),
or FileXaminer by (I don't remember,
it's said on BatChmod site).
These softwares solve ANY privileges and permissions issues,
and *even more*, but *be careful*.
They both are free, but you should give them $10,
as I did myself, when I solved my *Disks Locked* problem
(Have a look by searching "disks locked" in discussions.apple,
or search "Eww" or "Olivier Herrbach").
If you want something more expensive (is it reassuring ?),
MacPilot (Koingo), *TinkerTool System* (Marcel Brezinc),
iRepair, Cocktail and many other softwares
(I can tell you the names by searching)
have dedicated sections to solve these …
let’s say, ennoying authorizations issues.
There's absolutely *no need* to go into Terminal.
I hope having helped you ?
Best regards,
Vialatte

  • Hyper-V Dynamic memory, Driver Locked

    Hello All,
I've been wondering about the following.
I have 2 Dell R910 (Windows Server 2008R2 SP1) machines as my Hyper-V host machines, with around 40-50 VMs running on it. For most of my servers I've enabled dynamic memory, but on some of these machines I've seen the following:
For some reason this machine running Remote Desktop Services (with Web Access) is using around 3.8GB of memory.
Processes list only a fraction of the actual Memory being used.
But RAMmap shows that 2.5GB is being used by Kernel Drivers. From what I've read this might be the balooning effect of the dynamic memory. However, the RAM usage was the same yesterday evening (12h before I took these screenshots), when no one was actually
    working on this server.
I've seen this happen on multiple of my guest machines, the machines are running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter Edition.
Can anyone explain to me why it is doing this?
    Thank you.
    Kind Regards,
    Tom

How does a virtual machine memory is taken ?
    The
method of " balloon " - in the guest OS specific driver begins to consume the allocated memory , taking it to the OS in a VM could not refer to it , and in fact , giving the allocated memory hypervisor for other virtual machines.
The guest OS continues to believe that her "a lot" of memory, it just kind of busy process and marked as «driver
locked». When subsequent addenda to the memory of this virtual machine
will be added to the memory address space of the process - and released them for the needs of the OS.
    Have a nice day !!!

  • My system drives locked up -- "custom" access can't be reset

My system crashed and it took be a day and a half to get it working again: Lion wouldn't reinstall from the DVD, from the internet or from the Lion USB stick I made.  Finally I pulled out all the drives and put in only a Lion drive I had set aside as a safety. This worked.
My main system drive and the Time Machine drive display a little lock icon and when I open Info, their permissions are all listed as "custom."  Worse, when I try to change them, I can't.
All my data is on those drives and Lion won't even let me open them to transfer files.
How do I change the permissions?

I've been wrestling for three days with being locked out of all drives except one. I've tried everything on the planet including variations on the following, with no success. I was stunned when these two simple commands, cut and pasted into terminal, worked. I repeat this from the archives since it took me ages to find it among all the other posts that were efforts to help. Frame this, bronze it, put it on the wall, worship at its feet. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to relax using my Macs again. V.K., you're a god. How about visit a bolt on Cupertino.

run the following terminal commands (copy and paste, please)
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal. this should unlock your drives.

    Hi:
I wish I could tell you for sure.  Something is whacko.
I see you just did a fresh OS install too, so it isn't that.
If you decide on a new WLAN card, make sure you read your service manual, and only get one listed in the Illustrated Parts chapter.
Not only must it be one of the models listed, but it must also have the HP part number as well, or your notebook will not boot until you remove the card.
So, do a search by the part number of the card you want when you look to purchase one.

  • HT1420 how do i Deauthorize a computer that has had the hard drive lock up and can not get it working

how do  i deauthorize a computer that has had the hard drive lock up and can not get it working

You can only deauthorise individual computers directly on them. Otherwise if you've reached the 5 computer limit, then you should be able to log into your iTunes account and 'deauthorise all' (which you can only do once every 12 months) and you can then (re-)authorise up to 5 computers : authorising and deauthorising.

  • Why is my external hd & flash drive locking up when transferring .m4a?

Why is my external hd & flash drive locking up when transfering .m4a?
I recently upgraded my software to 10.6.3 on my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo. When I transfer movie files specifically to my USB flash drive and external hard drives, they now cause my imac to freeze. If the file size is larger than 500K I experience this problem.
    What is the issue?

They are formated as MS-DOS Fat
    Thanks

  • TC and WD500 External drive - Locks up when copying large files

I have a TC with a Western Digital 500GB my Book connected to the USB port on the TC that I use for network Storage. Everything works fine until I try to copy large files or directories from the Finder mounted share. After the copy freezes the external drive can no longer be seen by airport utility. If I look at disks it sees the disk but no partition. I have to power cycle the external drive to have TC see the drive again. Then I disconnect the drive and plug it in directly to the MAC and run disk utility and his repairs the journal. I have to do the repair every time it locks up. Should the external drive be formatted different or does it have to be connected to a USB hub. Or is this just a bug with the TC and afp ?

I have this very same problem.
I tried to copy a 4GB+ folder from the Macbook to the 500GB MyBook attached to my TC and it froze.
Now the the files on the MyBook are invisible when attached to the TC ("0 Items") but are available when the drive is connected directly to the Macbook. I have run disk utility but it hasn't helped. The disk is FAT 32 formatted and the files on the MyBook are still invisible over the network.
When the drive attached to the Macbook directly I can see a 'phantom' file with the same title as the 4GB+ folder I'd tried to copy. This file is "ZERO KB" and it cannot be deleted (error code -43).
Anyone have a clue what is happening here?

  • Hard Drives locked after Leopard Install

Since this only happened after I installed Leopard, I figured here would be a good place. My apologies if it is not.
The root ( /Volumes/Entreri/ and /Volumes/Akira ) are now read only. All folders and files within them have correct permissions.
History: For a long time now, I've promised myself that one day, I was going to wipe my main drive, Ishii, and do OSX RIGHT. Ever since I had initial permissions problems since I upgraded my systems from OS9 to OSX, I ran my system (a Dual 1 Ghz Quicksilver G4) as root. Cringe away. I was young, and my attitude was that my dang computer was not going to tell me what I could, and could not delete (and trust me, after the initial switch and for years beyond, OSX still gave me plenty of those problems).
But I grew older and knew it was time to just run as an admin user, and not root. When Leopard was released, I figured it would be time to wipe my system HD (Ishii) totally clean, install OSX 10.5 and run as a normal user "sean."
Install goes fine. The finder pops up and I start to make what I assume are my first mistakes of my new life as an admin user. I get info on Entreri and Akira, and see their permissions are set to rwrwr-. **** no I say. The Everyone group (for some reason...) needs to have write access!! I change the permissions to rwrwrw and "apply to all enclosed items." It works! "Awesome," I thought, "all my permissions problems have been fixed!" I do that to both my Aux drives.
Then I get info on the system drive, Ryoko, and see the same thing... and I change it, and I hit apply to all enclosed items. About 30 seconds after a little voice in my head nags: "Why would you need to do that? The drive was wiped fresh- every file in there has the permissions OSX set for it.."
But it was in process- and I've learned not to interrupt OSX doing file changes.
As I'm sure you can guess, OSX starts behaving strangely after that. I restart off the Leopard disk, and use the disk utility to Repair Disk Permissions. Due to the number of files I idiotically changed, that takes 4 hours.
Now OSX runs fine.. but my Aux drives, Entreri and Akira, have their root directories locked.
•Getting info on the hard drive makes it look like everything's fine.
•Changing the permissions from rwrwrw to rwrwrw just to try and do something doesn't do anything.
•Applying to enclosed items run, but the root directory is still locked.
•Ignoring ownership on the volume doesn't change the locked root folder.
•FileXaminer can't seem to do anything either.
•Attempting to change the permissions in the terminal results in a Operation not permitted error.
    •Permissions as reported from terminal: drwxrwxrwx@ 25 root admin 918 Dec 8 14:15 Entreri
•I ran as root, to see if I could fix the problem, but it's the same thing all over.
•When booting from leopard and running disk utility, the hard drive's are still appearing as locked- nothing is wrong with the drives. I was thinking about reinstalling, but if the installer disk sees the drives as locked, I doubted that would make an issue.
Entreri: 500 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9
Akira: 80 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.6 (4 years old or so)
Ryoko: 80 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.6
Any help would be appreciated. I fully know I screwed up.

Same here, I have 3 extra internal drives and they now show a lock graphic on the desktop icons. If I try and write any files to the drives I get a prompt stating the drive cannot be modified. I'm given an option to Authenticate with my password, but I then get a message that says I don't have sufficient access privileges. I just updated through Software Update but didn't pay attention to what was being patched. I'm guessing a security update screwed this up. I really need my drives because I use them for media production and I have a serious deadline...come on Apple, test things out before sending updates!

  • MacPro hard drives locked up. How do I unlock them?

    MacPro2 x 2.93 GHz 6-core Intel Xeon
    64 GB  1333 MHz DDR3
    Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Just created additional user account. Logged out and logged back into my user account. Noticed 3 of my hard drives were locked. Went to Administrator account and they were locked also. It would not let me unlock them, Tech guy even came in and created another Root User account and it would not let him unlock them either. We have reformatted one of the drives, but these are each 2 TB drives and will take me hours to copy my files back from my Time Machine back ups

How were you trying to unlock them? Are they locked or do they just have the wrong permissions?

  • Hard drive Locked, Unable to reinstall

I am trying to re-install Lion after making the ghastly mistake of messing with my HD permissions, completely messing up all my Sytem/library/extension/...Kext files, not that I understand what they are. I did this because I continued to run into permission issues, and naively thought it would solve my problems.
Advice seemed to be that the best solution was to re-install OS, which for me is Lion 10.7.5 running on a iMac 24 inch, early 2009.
I followed the advice in this post:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3531813
That seemed to all go fine, until I get to the part to reinstall the OS, and the HD is unavailble since it is locked.
    Any way to unlock it?
Alternatively, if I simply re-booted from the last time machine back up, would that repair the awful damage I did to my disc permissions?
Feel free to dumb your answer way, way down and go through minute details in steps to follow.
    Any help, much appreciated.
    Cheers, and happy new year.

Wow, thanks.  It did the trick.  So now I am confused, do you think I still need to take in my Mac to see if there are some problems with the hard drive, or do you think I'm in the clear.  I was going to get a new hard drive installed, because I thought that was the issue seeing as I couldn't access it during safe mode.

  • Hard drive locked while trying to reinstall OS Mavericks

I have a iMac (mid-2011) running OS X Mavericks.  My hard drive will not boot up (new problem as of this morning).  I got into recovery mode (rebooting with control-R) and ran Disk Utility, which could not repair the hard drive.  It suggested I back up then reinstall the OS.  Going to Reinstall OS X, I cannot select to reinstall on my Hard Drive, as it says "This drive is locked."  How do I get around this?  Do I have to erase the hard drive first?  I do have a current Time Machine backup but would prefer not to go that route if possible.  I have seen suggestions for getting into Terminal to unlock the hard drive, but how do I get into Terminal when I cannot boot up the computer?  Is there a way to get into Terminal from recovery mode?

Do you have FileVault turned on? Disk Utility/File/Turn off encryption.

  • Drives Locked can't change prefs

Ever since upgrading to SL, my external FW800 drives have been locked to 'read only'. When I open the 'Get Info', the option to unlock or change permissions has been disabled. I can unlock the disks by running Disk Warrior, but each time I restart, the disks are locked again. Is this a bug?

hi VK, I'm also having a problem with both HD, I did what you recommended and here is the results:
    1TB:
    iMac:~ Daniel$ ls -ladeO /Volumes/iomega\ 1TB\ HD
    drw-rw-r--+ 11 Daniel staff uchg 442 4 Sep 19:52 /Volumes/iomega 1TB HD
    0: user:root allow list,addfile,addsubdirectory,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity
    1: user:Sandra allow list,addfile,addsubdirectory,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity
    500GB:
    iMac:~ Daniel$ ls -ladeO /Volumes/iomega\ HD
    drw-rw-r--+ 17 Daniel staff uchg 646 1 Jun 08:25 /Volumes/iomega HD
    0: user:root allow list,addfile,addsubdirectory,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity
    1: user:Sandra allow list,addfile,addsubdirectory,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity
I can acces any of them, even logging in root, could change the privileges, which are set to "custom", however I could open the drives in finder and see that the content has another privileges.
By the way, when I try to change the privileges from custom to another one, I can change it but immediately changes to custom.
    Cheers,
    Daniel

  • Flash Drive locked folder

    Hi all ,
I recently bought a 4Gig flash drive to use as a very large spare HD on my Mac . I'm an image collector/history buff and all the images I have collected are starting to slow my comp down a bit so I started transferring them into my new Flash drive to get them off my HD . When I bought this particular drive it had advertised a few built in cheese apps meant for windows that I had no interest in , but the price was right . At the time i didn't care because I knew my mac wouldn't read them anyway , and they did not even show up at all . I then happily started my transfers , I got a few of the usual file char errors but thought nothing of it . When all was said and done , all my images were gone from the folder I created ! Not only that , the folder is now locked and I cant unlock it and trash it ! any Ideas?

Are you talking about the original folder on your computer or the folder that was created on the flash drive? I will assume the latter.
Flash drives usually come formatted for PC machines, in FAT format. If you are using this drive exclusively with your Mac you might want to partition and format it for Mac use. I haven't had any real problems using a PC format drive with Macs but there are some file limitations and it makes life easier just to use Mac format (HFS extended) if that's all you need.

  • Internal drive locked

I bought a new iMac in February this year and as a result my MacBook Pro has not been used since. I recharged the battery this week but when I tried to boot it up it would only partially start and then just shut itself down. I planned to give the MacBook to my wife and was intending to re-install Moutain Lion so I am not worried about losing the data on the drive.
I've tried the re-install using the recovery option and via a bootable USB drive but all options tell me the drive is locked and will not allow me to continue with the installation. I can get access to the disk utilities and have tried the repair option, without success, but the option to reset permissions is not available.
If anyone knows how to fix this or knows of software that will do it from the DVD or USB drive I would be eternnaly grateful.
This seems to be quite a common problem as Googling "MacBook locked drive" gives many instances but there does not seem to be a fix.
    Many thanks,
    John
