Drives no longer mount - Only after restart do they mount

Upgrade to from 10.4 to 10.5 and ran all updates...currently have 10.5.4. My external drives no longer mount when i plug them in via usb port. Worked perfectly before upgrade. Additionally my ipod wont mount either. They dont show up in disc utility either...However if i have these devices plugged in with the computer turned on (and they aren't mounting) and i restart my computer then when it boots up again they mount and function just fine. but if i unmount and turn them off and turn them back on...they dont mount.
any suggestions?

Hi grant862
I seam to be having the same issue. I have a number of Flash cards and a flash card reader, well tow card readers actually. I cant get the cards to mount. I have tried swapping usb cables and card readers. I have tried both readers in all my USB ports (17" Mac Book - 10.5.4). The only way that I can get them to mount is if I plug the cards back into the cam, eras an connect them. I think there is a software glitch somewhere. I don't think its the usb ports as I have tried keyboards and mice connected via these ports with no issue. I don't expect an answer to this, but Grant - if you are still out there - I wanted you to know you weren't alone. I am going to try re-installing the 10.5.4 combi download and see what happens. Oh yes and 'repair permissions' (which I have already done once...) but am beginning to think that this is just a bit like saying a mantra as a way of calming me.

  • A username no longer shows up after restart

For some reason, a username no longer shows up after restart.  I have to login with another account, and then logout of that account.  After logout (but not restart) the username shows up!  any ideas?

Actually, while looking into your suggestions, I figured out what the problem was.
I had FileVault encryption turned on, and noticed on a FileVault preferences dialog popup that the user that wasn't showing up was not enabled to decrypt the drive.  Thus, I had to login with an Admin user account (to decrypt the drive), logout, and then the user could login.
I turned FileVault off (since I no longer really needed it), and then the user account showed up.  I suspect that enabling that user account to decrypt the FileVault drive would have worked as well.
    Thanks for the tips, nonetheless!

  • CC 2014 on Yosemite shows applications launched after restart (but they are not)

Wondering if anyone else is having this issue. Running Yosemite GM on a late 2009 27" iMac.
All of the apps (except Bridge...which has been extensively discussed) appear to work fine. I routinely use Illustrator, PShop, After Effects, and Audition....no issues...
When I restart my machine, however, and OS X goes to restore all of the apps that were open before restarting...that's when things get strange. In my dock, there are dots below the apps that were open, indicating that they've relaunched....although if I click on one of the icons in the dock to move over to that app, the app launches....it wasn't actually open although it shows as open and running in the dock. Furthermore, if you right click on one of the "running" icons after restart it shows the app as non-responsive and asks if you want to force quit.
It really hasn't made any material difference in my work...like I said, all of the apps work (except Bridge when it comes to previewing AE presets) and it's just mildly frustrating....
    Anyone else have this issue?
    Thanks

    Jeff,
I have two machines, a late 2009 27" iMac running Yosemite 10.10.2 with 12g of ram, and an early 2009 17" MacBook Pr with 8g of RAM, same OS.
Creative Cloud runs perfectly on the MacBook Pro, all the apps hang on the iMac. I have disabled every extension, I have deleted CC and reinstalled, I have deleted all the apps and ran the cleaner and reinstalled everything, they still hang. I use dropbox and have unchecked the finder config, both machines. I use FontAgent Pro on both machines. Both machines have Skyfonts. I have no problem with any other app on the iMac or the MacBook Pro. No wifi issues. We just moved here 10 days ago, the problem started then. If it was unseated RAM, other applications would be affected, and they are not. Can you help?

  • USB Hard Drive not mounting til after restart

This weekend I put a new internal hdd in my Power Mac G5, and decided to use this opportunity to go ahead and put Leopard on one of my macs.
I'm finding that it doesn't mount some my USB External Hard Drives (3.5" externaly powered cases) unless I plug them in, and then restart the computer. (It also works just starting up if the G5 is off.) The drive needs to be turned on before the start up.
This is the case with an older IDE->USB 5 inch case, a brand new sata->USB 3.5 case (with the former g5 drive inside, and a sata->usb newertech bridge on the g5 drive. A bus powered 2.5" one mounted fine without the restart. I have not tried any flash drives.
I've tried the different USB ports on the G5 with no difference. I have not tried plugging it into a hub that's pre-connected (either powered or non).
They don't show up in Disk Utility during the time they don't mount. They do after the plugged-in restart, though. They also unmount then remount fine after the plugged in-restart.
The drives work just fine on my MBP (running Tiger). They worked just fine before the Leopard upgrade. If I boot into the Tiger partition on the G5, they work just fine.
I've seen references to other people having what sounds sort of like this problem in google searches but nothing exact, and those threads seem to get sidetracked with useless comments (like "Well, you should just use Firewire!" etc).
Has anyone experience this...and moreover, anyone found a fix.

    Two things to check:
The drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT 32
You almost always have to use a powered USB hub with the under powered port on the Time Capsule, even if the hard drive has its own power supply
Where are you expecting the drive to "show up"?

  • IPhone syncs/charges only after restart

Hello. I am having some troubles getting my iPhone to sync or charge when connected to my iMac G5.
The phone will not sync, iTunes doesn't recognize that it is connected, AND it will not charge at all. I can plug it in and unplug it as many times as I want. The only way to get the phone and computer to sync/charge the phone again is to restart the iMac, log-in, and then plug the iPhone back in - then everything works great again for 1 more sync/charge session. If I unplug the phone from the iMac, I have to restart again before my next sync/charge. It has been like this since I upgraded (clean install) to Leopard on the iMac.
    Any ideas? Thanks!
Also, after I restart and log-in I have to start iTunes before plugging in the iPhone otherwise iTunes never automatically launches with the phone is plugged in.
    iMac G5, Leopard 10.5.1 (Clean install), iTunes 7.6, iPhone 8GB 1.1.3

Not sure if this has anything to do with the new download, but Thursday I downloaded the '08 updates (yeah...I am slow getting to it), anyway... while I was downloading the updates my phone of course was charging from the computer. After the download was finished I turned my phone off and plugged the phone into the wall charger. Charged fine... well last night (Saturday) I had to recharge my phone, but once I connected my phone to the wall charger it would not respond and/or start charging. Tried to plug it into the computer and it said my USB port was overloaded. I was ticked... needless to say I tried again this morning with no luck. Left my phone off for a few hours still nothing. Called tech. support and the guy asked me to try it again on the computer and read what the error said to him.....low and behold it started charging... on the pc and then on the wall charger. I have no idea why it started to work. I was happy it did, but has anyone else had this issue?

  • After installling Firefox 4, my USB drives no longer worked. After uninstalling, they worked again.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A665. Windows 7. I have been using Firefox 3.6.16 without problems. Updated with Firefox 4.0. My USB drives wouldn't work anymore. Tried using my Nook, Flash drives. My computer just didn't see anything plugged into the USB. I uninstalled Firefox 4.0 and my USB ports worked. Installed Firefox 3.6.16. USB ports worked.

  • CD/DVD drive no longer accepts media after Tiger

I have a PowerBook G4 17" (about 6 mos old) that no longer takes a CD or DVD after upgrading to TIger (10.4.2). The drive does not even appear on the System Profiler. The last CD that it took was the Tiger installer CD. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

ok, let me close this one. Repairing permissions fixed the problem.

  • After moving iTunes, external drive sometimes becomes read-only after reboot

I had some system corruption a few weeks ago, and had to restore my system.  As part of that prolonged effort, I decided to move my iPhoto Library and iTunes Library to external FW800 drives.
I had terrible problems initially with these drives mounting read-only.  I found a relatively quick work-around, and that seemed to fix the problem.  But I still have them periodically mount read-only, and I can't D/L iTunes updates, etc.
Why do they keep doing this on a reboot?  Very frustrating, as I need to reboot as part of the fix, and I'm always in the middle of something else, and can't reboot at that time.

Oh, as part of this, not sure when the change was made, OSX used to keep the mounted volume name in /Volumes, even if the volume was ejected.  Would cause an occasional problem - but very rare.  I notice now that ML seems to create/delete these mountpoints automagically - and that's part of the problem.  They get incorrect permissions when the volume mounts, and I (user I'm logged in as), can't write to the volume without some background shenanigans.
    My process is this:
    Unmount problem volume
Drop to terminal, and "sudo mkdir /Volumes/<mounted_volume_name>"
Remount volume via Disk Utility (you now get a "<mounted_volume_name> 1" - with CORRECT permissions)
    Unmount the volume again
Remove the created directory (i.e. undo step 2)
Remount the volume - 99.9% of the time that seems to fix it.
Reboot to be sure - and it stays for a while - then at some point becomes a problem again.
Not sure if it's something in ML that's an issue - or something in iTunes or iPhoto (but can't see how they would affect the permissions when the system reboots and you login)

  • Why do my input languages get reset to U.S. only after restarting?

I'm using an English Canadian keyboard on Mountain Lion, and every time I restart it gets reset to U.S. only. My Swedish and Canadian input sources completely disappear. Never had this problem until I upgraded to 10.8.2.

I have the same problem. I've tried to setup language preferences under root user but it didn't help.

    Hi All,
The issue I face is :There is a BPEL Process with a DB adapter which has to poll on a database.
Now my DB adapter polls, but the instance in EM remains in Recovery State.
From BPEL Service Engine even if I recover, they dont get recovered.
But,If I restart the server(SOA) and and From BPEL Service Engine if I recover, they get recovered.
SO,every Time I hav to restart the server.:-( :-(
    Kindly ,suggest the solution.

The solution is either change the order of deployment or copy the FileAdapter.rar file in $ORACLE_HOME/lib location and restart the server as mentioned here.

  • Exporting jpgs worked only after restart

    Hi!
    What I did:
    - Exported some RAWs to JPGs with constrained size. Worked as expected. (Don't know wheter this has something to do with the following:)
    - Exported some RAWs to JPGs with full size. The JPGs appeared just for 0.5 seconds in the export folder, den disappeared. After the export, LR said "Error during export. Ignore/Show". No hint what went wrong.
    - When I then exported the same RAWs with constrained size 1000x1000, it worked! When changing the size to 1500x1500 or more, I got the same error message again.
    - Then I closed LR and started it again. Interesting: I had the same collection of error-RAWs again ;-) Then I tried the full size export again, and it worked.
    Strange bug.

  • Time Machine won't mount Firewire 800 drive after restart / Finder crashes

I've been having problems with Finder crashes. I first suspected Spotlight might be the problem because sometimes when I started typing a search, it would display the first 3 characters and then lock up. I could force quit the Finder, but it wouldn't relaunch and required the computer to be shutdown and restarted with the power button. Once restarted, I had no keyboard and no mouse click (the mouse would move across the screen but I could not click on anything). After waiting several minutes (3-5) the mouse and keyboard worked properly.
After some research suggested the Spotlight index might be corrupt, I forced Spotlight to rebuild the index (add the drive to the exclude list under "Privacy" and then remove it from the list) and then repaired disk permissions. After that Spotlight was noticeably snappier and I thought my Finder crashes had been solved until........
Part 2: I have been using Time Machine (connected to a Fantom GreenDrive via Firewire 800) for several months now and ever since the beginning, I have noticed that the drive will NOT mount after a restart. I must turn the drive off and back on again to get it to mount. After that Time Machine picks it up and seems to work fine.....well, that is until this Finder crashing thing started several weeks ago. Anyway, I inadvertently set up an experiment last weekend when I installed some software update and forgot to remount the Time Machine drive after the restart. That was last Sunday night. The computer did not crash all week long. I thought my Spotlight fix had finally solved my problems, but now it seems I was wrong. This morning (Saturday, six days later), I noticed my Time Machine drive was not mounted. I mounted it, told Time Machine to "Back Up Now" and went away for a few hours. When I came back the Finder was locked up.
So guess my question is this: Are there any know problems with using Firewire 800 with Time Machine? and What can I do to fix this? In the meantime I'm trying another experiment - I've disconnect the Firewire 800 connection and replaced it with USB.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Not in general. Some drives don't always wake or "spin up" fast enough; often that's seen when the system wakes from sleep, though, not so much after a system Restart. Many Western Digitals do that; I don't recall seeing any posts here about yours, but you might want to search the forums for Fantom

Good plan - that may provide a clue.
Also, check with the maker -- there may be a firmware or driver update.
And try verifying your internal HD, and repairing your backups, per #A5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). Either might cause that.
