Driving 24" external display with 20" imac

I'm looking at imacs now to use with Logic Pro and I'm going to buy a second display to expand my screen. I'm thinking of the ACD 23" or the BenQ 24" but I'm wondering if I'll run into problems trying to drive a monitor bigger than the built-in 20" display.

Hello,
You'll be fine using it with a 24-inch screen. The built-in monitor does not determine the maximum size that the video card can drive. It's just the monitor chosen for that computer.
I hope this helps.

  • Connect 2 external Displays with a iMac 27''

    Hi,
is there a way to connect two external Displays with a iMac 27inch. Eyefinity? Its a Radeon 5750 inside the iMac isnt it?

    Hi,
For the first screen is no brainer you use the Apple adapter to have video out to HDMI or DVI, but the second screen is where it gets tricky...
There are USB to DVI out external video cards that should work with the iMac and OS X 10.6 but I have changed. Honestly I have tested 6 so far and none of them works as advertised, you can not even set minimal resolution on there and some wont even work ( all of them come with OS X 10.6 drivers )
So I will recommend to stay away from the small $70 or $90 external USB to VGA/DVI cards...
(maybe someone has luck with them but i have tried like I said 6 so far different brand and no luck..)
Now recently online I tripped over a nice external video card that takes the MiniVideo Port out from the Mac and then takes it to another 2 monitors price was $249 i think, and you could hook up 2x30" monitors with hight res... I will try to find this link and post here later on.

No. There is no "USB Target Disk Mode".
Just so we're clear, when you start your Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM - holding T on startup), do you see a FireWire icon on the Mac mini's display? IIRC, it's not required that the Mac mini be connected to a display for TDM, but it would help diagnose whether or not the mini is actually starting in this mode.

How do I use an external display with a macbook pro?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

  • EXACTLY what cable(s) do I need to connect my MacBook Pro (early 2011) to an external display with a 2560x1440 resolution?

I am trying to connect my MacBook Pro (early 2011 w/ Intel HD 3000/ 384Mb) to an external display with a 2560x1440 resolution. Specifically, what cable/connections do I need to display at this resolution? I cannot get the display to work using a "Thunderbolt to HDMI" or a "Thunderbolt to DVI" connector.  Note:  I used both older and newer (uni-directional) HDMI cables on the first config, and a Dual-link DVI cable on the second config.   Apple specs state this is possible ( support.apple.com/kb/SP619 ), but I am at a loss as to how this can be done.  Thanks in advance for the help!

You use a Mini DisplayPort to either HDMI or dual-link DVI adapter. If that component doesn't work, something's wrong with either the cable or something else in the connection.

  • External display with MacBook Pro in Lion

    Hello,
Yesterday I bought a Mac OS X Lion, and I found one annoying feature of the system - working on a MacBook Pro (MBP), and very often use an external display, with that do not use display in the MBP. When connecting an external monitor doing video processing, and this activity I was used by Mac OS X Snow Leopard to open the MBP there wasaccess of air to cool the computer. After installing the Lion was the fact that even at very small opening MBP is switched to internal MBP display. This is the functionality of the Lion off somewhere or somehow set? I looked in Preferences, and I have found nothing. Thank you in advance for information on how to solve this problem.

I own a mac mini that stays connected to the 52" LCD 120hz in my living room. The image is perfect, and fits just fine. I did a mini-display port to dvi and got a monster cable adapter for dvi to hdmi which too it to my tv. I did have to go into the tv and set the tv to overscan I think on the image to make it fit and you will have to adjust the resolution on the computer. I can say the colors are darker on the tv and this is just due to the nature of the screen size. Newer LED tvs may be better, but mine is only 1 1/2 years old.
For an external display, just go to the educators link, select your college and you get $100 off. My wife is an educator and I am back in college so it's no hassle. Or they just ask for an ID. I own 2 24" ACD and they are nice. I do photography and a screen calibration is a must. Once done you'll be happy. And docking with the laptop is handy.

    Hello dljfield,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you'd like to use multiple external displays with a MacBook Pro with Retina display, then please take a look at the information outlined below. A 15" MacBook Pro mid-2014 can support up to two external displays using different outputs.

  • Using an external display with the macbook air

hi, i wanna know if i can use an external display with the macbook air as the tunderbolt is a bit pricey? i was thinking about buyin a LCD moniter wih a VGA port. many thanks

Yes.  You can use VGA DVI or HDMI monitors by buying a  Minidisplay port to xxx adapter and the the appropriate cable (vga, dvi or hdmi).
The MiniDisplayport adapter plugs into the Thunderbolt port.

  • External Display with Lid Down?

I'm figuring out how to get an external display connected to my MacBook
So far, so good. I'm sitting at a big 20" wide-screen display as I type this.
Now, I want to be able to close the lid on the MacBook when I'm working on this big display... But, as currently configured, when I close the lid, the display on the MacBook goes dark and takes the external display with it.
Probably an easy solution... but damned if I know what it is...
    Thanks,
    --PS

When you close the screen, the MacBook will go to sleep. That's as designed and there's no way to prevent it that I know of. But you should be able to just press a key on your external keyboard and wake the system back up again.
That's working. Is the screen "on" when the lid is closed this way and I'm working from an external monitor? Seems to me that might not be such good thing.
Now, here's the only remaining problem: getting audio out of my Mac and into my stereo receiver?
The only audio out on the Mac is the earphone jack; the only inputs on my stereo are standard stereo line-in inputs.
I can connect them that way, but there's an impedance mismatch which = hum. Is there an adapter or something that can overcome that?
    Thanks for the help,
    --PS

  • External display with MAcbook closed?

Trying to set up an external display with my macbook. Is there some way to use the Macbook closed? I want to be able to use the external monitor as my main display and don't need the built in screen. Thought this was possible. Thanks for any insights.

Yes, it is. Connect an external USB keyboard and external monitor. If you don't have the keyboard then you can use third-party software that will allow the lid to be closed without putting the computer to sleep. Try InsomniaX, for example - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Can you use any external display with a macbook?

    hi all,
I was just wondering, can you use any external display with a macbook? (i.e. gateway, and dell displays?)

    To original poster:
    Yes.
Provided you have the appropriate ports and cables, that is. Some monitors do not have all vga, dvi-i, dvi-d, hdmi, etc. ports, and it can be misleading that all those technologies appear to be compatible via conversion cables (they aren't all meant to be compatible, so look it up on the internet before buying).

  • Intel iMac won't recognize external display with Dynex mini-DVI adapter

I've got an original Intel iMac with a Mini-DVI connection on the back. I'm attempting to hook it up to an external display (a plasma screen, in fact). I picked up a Dynex Mini DVI to Video Adapter DX-AP100 for Apple. This connector has a mini-DVI connector on one end, and both a video-out and an S-video-out on the other.
When attempting to use the adapter, the iMac does not recognize that there is an external display connected. Here are the facts:
The external display: I've tried this with a Panasonic Plasma screen connected directly through S-video, as well as a Pioneer receiver (one that switches video) connected both through s-video and composite video. And yes, I've got the settings on the TV correct. I've also tried this with a Polaroid LCD TV connected via S-video and composite video.
I did notice that when I click "Detect Displays" while the Plasma was connected, the plasma briefly "flashed", implying SOMETHING was happening, but still no dice.
Anyone have any experience with this Dynex DX-AP100 that could share some wisdom?

Yeah, I realize S-video is limiting, but I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible. The TV is mounted to the wall and there are not currently any DVI or HDMI cables coming out of it. There's an S-video input from my receiver that I'd prefer to use since it's readily accessible already. In the end my goal is to use Netflix "Watch Now" on the TV, so I'm not too worried about video quality.
and before someone asks if I considered that the receiver's S-video input might be the problem...I tried taking the s-video wire from the stereo and plugging it directly into the adapter. No dice.
ONE ADDITIONAL PIECE of information...while trying to get this to work on an LCD monitor, I plugged the composite video connection from the TV into the adapter. Suddenly the Mac recognized an additional monitor, but it saw it as a VGA monitor, not as s-video or composite video, and no signal went to the TV.
I'm considering trading in this adapter for a mini-DVI to VGA adapter, but that really won't help me with the connection to the TV.
