Driving and dimming LEDs with USB-6501

I have a strip of LEDs hooked up to a power source with an intermediate dimmer. The specs for all that hardware is listed below. I am looking to switch from manual control to digital I/O. I have a NI USB-6501 DAQ but have never worked with it before and so would appreciate some guidance. The goal is to maintain maximum brightness but be able to dim the LEDs from my software. I've read several threads about simple on/off control but haven't found anything on dimming.

In order to control something, you would need to be able to physically connect the 6501 but it does not appear you have anything to connect it to. From the image of the dimmer, it just has a knob.

  • Can I measure period with USB 6501?

    Hi,
I was told that I can use the one counter in the NI USB 6501 to measure period.  So, I wrote this little VI, modeled after the VI I have that measures encoder period using the counters built into the NI cDAQ 9174 with the NI 9401 digital I/O module.  I have my encoder wires GND and 5VDC on terminals 1 and 2, respectively.  Also, I have encoder channel A and Channel B wires connected to terminals 9 (P2.7) and 24 (P0.7) respectively.  With the MAX, I can count edges with this wiring.  The purpose of this VI is to display an average value of 25 period measurements of the encoder.  The encoder (120 cpt) is turning at about 2-5 rev/second, so, not that fast, maybe a total of 500 period per second; should be easy for this counter.  I'm just spinning it with my finger, so, not that fast.
Please advise how to use the USB 6501.  I can't find any wiring instructions, other than the pinout, but, the pinout doesn't tell you which channel is the counter gate on the USB 6501, so, I found a response on MAX at channel 24.
When I run this, the array is correctly initialized to 0.5, but, then I get this error, 200431. I found some things on the forum that suggest I cannot measure period, that I can only count edges.  Should I throw this 6501 away?
    Thanks,
    Dave

The 9178 also only has 4 counters.
Do the 5 period measurements actually have to take place at the same time?  Sometimes it might make sense to cycle through the channels to reduce the number of counters used (you wouldn't have to rewire connections or anything as the input terminals are software-defined).  Switching from channel to channel in software should take on the order of ms depending on which hardware you end up using.
The 9171+(9401/9402) is a relatively cheap way to add additional counters to a system as the 9171 chassis has 4 counters just like the 9174 and 9178.

  • Help with USB 6501 to signla a digital exposure controller

I am trying to use the NI USB 6501 to control the shutter from a Spectra-Physics Digital Exposure Controller. The shutter can be controlled using a coaxial cable with a BNC connector.  I dot not have much experience with digital outputs.  I have connected the "main pin" and ground but after that I could use some help.  I have also looked into the write digital channel vi.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here is the link to the product....http://www.newport.com/Exposure-Control-Instruments-for-Large-Area-Illum/378091/1033/info.aspx

the manual says that a the BNC connecter (J4) controls the shutter.  I believe I have it working now tho.

  • Microsoft XBox 360 HD DVD drive and Panther/Tiger with USB 1?

Hi, I've looked everywhere for this information, but is it possible to connect my Microsoft XBox 360 HD DVD drive into my blue and white (which runs Tiger, but wondering if this'll work with Panther for another computer). I don't currently have my blue and white G3 to test it with... So, can I connect it to my blue and white and read JUST data CDs and DVDs under USB1.1? Is it bearable? Could I run a DVD game, or is it too slow? And yes, I do have a DVD Dual layer burning drive in my blue and white, but this is just a question for a computer I want to buy, which would run Panther.. And I do know I can't boot off of this, since it is USB...
    thank you...

According to a report posted here, someone connected an XBox 360's HD-DVD drive to a Mac's USB port and it was recognized. If you're intending to connect it to a Mac with PCI slots and running OS 10.2.8 or newer, you can and should install a USB 2.0 card. A card having an NEC controller chip will be more Mac-compatible than others. If you plan to connect it to a Mac without USB 2.0 upgrade capability, using the onboard USB 1.1 bus will be limiting. I've got an external Pioneer DVD±RW USB drive, but I've never tried connecting it to my B&W G3's onboard USB 1.1 port to read DVD data disks (I connect it to the USB 2.0 PCI card). Try it and see what happens - you can't damage anything. In addition to the Mac's CPU speed and graphics capabilities, playing a DVD game would require a faster bus than USB 1.1. Hopefully, you can install a USB 2.0 PCI card and enjoy optimal performance.

  • 5G Ipod and G4 iMac with USB 1.0 and FireWire

So when I got my MacBook I gave my G4 iMac to my parents. My mom just got a 5G video ipod, and I'm wondering if she'll have any issues trying to upload music without USB 2.0. Can she use the firewire connector from her ipod mini? Can she use the USB cord in the USB 1.0 port? I know it will be slower, but will it work?
I think the "official" word is that only USB 2.0 is supported with the 5G ipod, but I hope this works.
    Any help/tips would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

The Fifth Generation iPod will sync music, photos, and other data with both USB 1.1 and 2.0, and can charge with FireWire. The FireWire connector from the iPod mini cannot be used to sync data with that model of iPod.

  • Connecting mac and pc systems with usb

I've tried to connect with special usb data linq (or link) cable after installing drivers and software on both systems (in case of mac classic OS is neede and installed), both progarmmes on both systems work correctly - but no connection is poss, i.e. local machines are recognized, remote machines not. Can anyone help

    Hi Henry
    thanks for message.
Ethernet at this time is not poss cecause I have a conn with my son's Win PC (cross cable), ethernet of Mac I use for Internet via DSL - No network in the moment.
So I'm interested in using the USB conn...
The Product (cable with driver and pragramme software) is from Genesys Logic Inc.. The (Win) drivers name is usbhsb.sys, the programm for PC is USB GeneLink File Transfer 1.11A, for Mac it is Mac USB Bridge wich requests Classic System (9.2. wich I have installed within my 10.4.2 Tiger.
After installing both programmes on both mchines starts, but do not recognise each other systems, i.e. indicators on Mac both red, on PC indicator at first red, then yellow...
I have tested the cable and PC programme on two PCs and it works. So maybe: the cable as such is not recognised by the mac system, maybe it is an usb 2 standard (I'm not sure but afraid it must be 1.1)
    Kind regards

  • Another way of hooking in a keyboard and or mouse with usb?

    is ther any other way

You don't provide enough information to suggest an alternate. What model Mac are you using?
Most users plug the USB cable on their keyboard to a USB port on their Mac. They then plug the USB cable on their mouse into a USB port on their keyboard. Sometimes, users will plug their mouse USB cable onto a second port on their Mac. Is this how you are connected? Are the ports not working?
Users needing more USB ports have two options. They can use a USB hub (powered is best) that has multiple ports. The USB hub plugs into a port on the Mac.
If you want USB 2.0 speeds (on older Macs running OS X), you need to install a USB PCI card.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Is anyone using VMware fusion and having trouble with USB devices not being recognised

I have an Terratec Axon AX50 Guitar to Midi interface. The editor software is not Lion compatible so I have attempted to run that bit in Windows 7 on a virtual machine.
The problem is that the VM machine will not recognise the USB device, even though when it asks which machine I want to connect to it names the device correctly.

  • Hard Disk Upgrade - iMac 17" Flat Panel G4 1.0 GHz with USB 1.2

I’m considering upgrading the internal hard disk with the following:
    [Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKB 500GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - OEM|http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136111]
I read that others have successfully installed 500GB IDE disks. I have a two related questions:
    1. Do these larger disks cause any heat or power supply issues?
    2. I've seen several take-apart instructions. It seems like there are subtle differences with the various Flat Panel models. Does anyone know which instructions apply specifically to my model (iMac 17" Flat Panel G4 1.0 GHz with USB 1.2)?
Any insight and/or experience on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

I have exactly the same question.
Thing is, having did a bit of research I read that USB 1.1 machines can't support anything more than 120GB?
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/machine.php?name=imac-g4#int-hdd
"Compatible with the 1.25GHz model, and 1GHz iMacs with USB 2.0. It is not compatible with 1GHz iMacs without USB 2.0, or any slower models. Professional installation recommended."
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?productsid=71
"Be aware that many G4 PowerMacs have a 120GB capacity limit on the drives they can use, if you want to use a larger drive on these Macs we recommend adding a SATA controller card such as the Sonnet Tempo SATA PCI Card, and then using a SATA hard drive rather than an IDE one."
It wouldn't have to be this IBM model, in fact I like the sound of the Western Digital machines mentioned here, but I just wondered if anyone knew if the mac CAN support more than 120BG. I notice this company also state that it can't take more than 1GB RAM, but that's been proved wrong in other threads.
    Thanks!

  • External Drive does not mount with Firewire but is ok with USB !

Since 10.4.4 my external drive is no more recognized using firewire, but it mounts perfectly with USB
Using FW request me to reinitialize the disk, but then, the apple disk utility it is unable to reformat!
then I unplug FW , sets USB and everything is ok!
I connected the drive to my old IMac G4 700 and evrything is fine, FW and USB, using the same drive, using the same cable. I did repeat the test many times it is always ok with the old mac and it never mounts with FW on my newer Ibook.
I did reset the openfirmware but that was not successfull!
Then I brought both iBook and the faulty Drive to a friend (he owns a powerbook and also an external drive)
we verified that my drive does not mount on his powerbook G4 12" using FW and is ok with USB.
Then he tried his external drive and was very surprised to find the same fault with his drive and his PB using FW. (as for me everything is ok with USB!)
We are both very puzzled, our drives did work well before, (before 10.4.4 , and 10.4.5 did not improve!)
and now, with firewire, disks never mounts..
In addition I tried with the same cable to alternatively start, using the target mode, the ibook and the imac. For each test they were both recognized as external drives as they should..
So to try to sum up
    - Disk mount ok with USB (1 or 2)
    - Disk is no more recoknized with FW (but it was before with the exact same hadrware)
    - FW Cable seems to be ok as targuet mode works properly
    has anybody any idee?
It would be very munch appreciated..

Hi Andre, I can't remember except to say that it was mounting fine with tiger and I was able to copy files to it for backup purposes.
I just hooked it up to a PC and windows tells me the drive is not formatted. That's not a good sign, and this was stupid: I think I had the drive hooked up to my Mac Pro during the upgrade.
Idiotic, granted. But this was an upgrade, not a full install and I maybe was trusting in Apple's ability not to do extraneous stuff during an install like windows does. Oh well...
I appreciate any further ideas. Many Thanks, Frank.

  • Problem with USB speakers and new Mac Mini

I have a USB sound system consisting of a pair of Harman Kardon soundsticks and a woofer from probably 10 years ago (bought and used originally with a Mac). I have tried driving it my new Mac Mini. It works fine for about a minute; then the music stops. Here's what I've tried to diagnose the problem:
    1. The problem does not occur when these speakers are driven from my Macbook Air (about 3 years old).
    2. The OS and iTunes software is up to date on both machines (10.9.5 and 12.0.1.26).
    3. It does not depend on which USB port I use on the Mac Mini.
    4. Using a port on a USB extender on the Mac Mini does not solve the problem.
    5. The iTunes Preference settings are the same on both machines.

Sorry, no actual experience with USB Audio devices.
I found this in the Pro forum, but the outlook doesn't seem good:

  • Blue screen on start up.  The wheel spin and the blue screen gets brighter for a second, then the blue screen dims and it repeats with the wheel.

When I start up my imac, I get a blue screen.  The wheel spin and the screen gets brighter for a second, then the blue screen dims and it repeats with the wheel.

Are you referring to the startup screen which is normally gray with the dark gray Apple logo or are you referring the login screen which is typically blue? If it's the latter you might give this a try:
Clearing Caches to Fix Login Problem
You will need to type some Unix commands. If you are not comfortable with this, I don't know of anything other than a re-install. But if you are careful, you should be OK. I recommend you print this out in a largish mono-spaced font so you don't miss any spaces (or add extra ones). Note that case is important.
Be careful. Some of these commands are dangerous, since you are going to be root.
Start up in Single-user Mode. When this has finished you will see a prompt ending in '#', although there may be other messages. Enter the following commands after the prompt:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Press RETURN. Wait a few seconds for 8-10 lines of output. If the last line says repairs were carried out, repeat this command until you get a message 'The volume <yourdiskname> appears to be OK'. Then continue with:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /Library/Preferences
    rm com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    rm com.apple.windowserver.plist
    cd /Library/Caches
    rm -r *
    cd /System/Library
    cd /System/Library/Caches
    rm -r *
    reboot
    Press RETURN after each command.
This should now take you to a proper login screen after the normal boot sequence. You should then Repair Permissions by using Disk Utility (in your /Applications/Utilities folder).
If it's the former then reinstall OS X. For Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
