Driving MSI Dual Opteron Master2

So, there I was at the swap meet standing in front of this dual socket mainboard with a red printed circuit board. It was beautiful! And, I think it was calling to me faintly. It apeared to have never been removed from the wrapper and it was resting on a retail box. A Lady walked over to me and said, "I'll sell it cheap if you buy it now...?" It was late in the day and people were leaving. "Where's the rest of it?" I asked. There was nothing included but the board. Basically a heap of scrap without the CD, I thought.
As it turned out I walked away with it tucked under my arm after handing over a few coins. Arriving home I shot on the web to MSI. I typed in MS9130 at every search bar on every page for ten minutes. No Data Available! was returned every time. Then I tried K8TMaster2FAR. Nothing. Ah Hah, I thought. No wonder it's so cheap. I Bought a board that MSI doesn't even support. Well, judging by the specifications listed on the box, I knew it was too good to be true. I could not even make up a more impressive listing except perhaps the Asus with PCIe.
So, I guess the question is...is there a way to get a CD from MSI without the standard sacrificial first born child, please? They have never answered any of a dozen E-Mails.

  • Trying to assemble dual opteron system, no display.

    My system:
    MSI K8T Master2-FAR
    Dual Opteron 250 cpus
    BFG 6800 Ultra OC
2 gigs pqi turbo registered ecc ram (2 sticks)
    74 gig raptor
    300 gig 16mb cache maxtor
    SB Audigy2 zs
Matrox RT.X100 exteme pro video editing card
    7 120mm led fans
    4 80mm led fans
    2 fan controllers
    Pioneer 108 dvd burner
I finally got all the parts and tried building my first self built pc with a friend. I have everything plugged in, all the fans spin, controllers light up, heatsink fans spinning. and im pretty sure the hds are going to, but nothing shows up on the monitor. I even put my old geforce 2 card so i could make sure it wasnt the 6800, but even that wouldnt work. My board has no onboard video so i cant use that. What do I do?

Well I got my new psu, put it in and tried everything. One processor, one stick of ram (only ecc ram I have), two sticks, 2 cpus and one stick, ect, reset the jumpers. But someone said the board needs a bios update to run the 250's. So I was pissed I may have to buy a 140 just to update the bios. But I called MSI and they are sending me a new bios chip with the latest bios on them.
    Think it will work?

  • [Opteron] Dual Opteron nForce 3 250 Ultra board?

    Hi
Does anyone know when we can expect a dual opteron nForce3 250 Ultra board from MSI?
Looks like iWill is the first one out of the gate with such a board.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Paul,
I think that there will be no problems - if you include a good PSU in the set up.
I would recommend to see what BIOS there is coming with the board - 1.9 or higher will recognise the X2 CPUs. If not strictly necessary, I would advice against flashing the BIOS of this board, unless - of course - you encounter specific problems. In that case I would flash an official BIOS (1.B) and not a beta, or modded BIOS.
At present the 4800 X2 is still quite expensive; the 4400 X2 is much better from a price/performance point-of-view ...
As far as RAM is concerned: why would you want to run 4GB of RAM? For normal programs/games, 1GB is more than sufficient and only with some of the newest games a noticeable increase in performance can be seen when 2GB is used in stead of 1GB. It is hard to imagine that adding 2 GB more will lead to an increase in performance. Instead it must be expected that you will loose performance (because of dropping to 333MHz, looser timings, etc.). I therefore recommend to go for 2GB of good quality RAM.
    Hope this helps,
    Hans

    Hi,
I am new to this forum but had been working on this problems for a week!
    Here my system:
    MSI K8t Master 2 FAR
    ECC ram 2GB
Dual Opteron 250 replaced the dual Opteron 242 one week ago
    BIOS upgrade to 1.4
Window Vista 64bit from Window XP Pro
The POST, Device Manager detect two new CPUs. However, there are only one CPU being utilize in task manager (yes, I have check one graph per CPU). It appear from the forum that BIOS 1.35B5? would work but I could not find it. Try to install Window XP Pro but failed (flopppy drive does not work).
Any help and suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

With BIOS 1.1 and dual Opteron 242, I have both CPU work as shown by Device manager and task manager (two CPU graphs). I can only get one CPU work since I upgrade to Opteron 250 and BIOS 1.4. Unfortunately BIOS 1.1 do not support Opteron 250.

I tried. More stable then 1.47, but not fully workable. Second CPU dont work, Smart fan dont work, if 4Gb installed -> CPU kernel time load 60-70% permanently. Last stable workable release is 1.35, but i have slow down if install LSI 21320R.
1.35 appear to be last stable version reported by users

  • Dual Opteron's

Will I get better performance with Dual CPU's instead of a Single CPU?

Depends what software you are running.
Most programs can only use a single CPU. They are described as "single threaded". Some high-end apps are multi-threaded, which means they are written to use multiple CPUs by running as small indepenant "threads". One thread uses one CPU while anothe uses a second.
So if you run Photoshop, 3Dstudio Max, Cinema4D, Adobe AfterEffects or other things like that written as multi-threading programs for multiple CPU systems then a dual Opteron will run nearly twice as fast as a similarly clocked single.
Equally, if you run multiple progams that can use as much CPU as they can get simultaneously, than 2 CPUS will help.
But most people don't do that. Few programs even use 1 CPU to the full. With 2 CPUs you could set a program to rendering video and then play games while it was running, but it's rare on a home PC to have multiple programs that need the CPU running at the same time.
In which case the second CPU will give you at most a few % improvement.

  • A single Amd Fx 51 or Dual Opteron 248's????????????

I have asked you many questions over the past few years and I have another question for you.  I have the option to run dual opteron 248's instead of my Amd fx 51.  Would I see a performance gain?Or would it be a waste?

    FX-51 = 2.2 GHz
    Opteron 248 = 2.2 Ghz
So clock-for-clock, both CPU's will perform roughly the same, and both have 1Mb cache.
So for things like gaming, there won't be much difference, HOWEVER if you are using multi-threaded applications (eg. encoding, rendering), then you DEFINITELY want to go the Dual Opteron route.
    My 2 cents!

  • WARNING... K8T Master 2 FAR Dual Opteron upgrade

Anyone owning this board who has set up with one processor with a view to upgrading to dual beware.
I recently assembled a machine in MAY 2004 using one AMD 242 Opteron, the system works fine and as Opteron prices have dropped i ordered the second one. Despite the short period of time between the two orders the processors are incompatible. I include an extract from an e-mail from AMD tech support
Based on the part numbers that you provided me for your Opteron 242
processors please note that based on their revisions they are not
compatible so will not work together.
    OSA242CC05  AH --> AH part # is a B3 revision
OSA242CEP5  AU --> AU part # is a CG revision
Please ensure that when putting these processors on a dual processor
motherboard both processors revision #s are the same.  I have included
a link for you below with information on how to determine the revision
    # for your processor.
    http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/30417.pdf
I am assuming that it would be fairly difficult to track down a match for the first processor so i will probabltyhave to order a third processor to match the new one which leaves one spare...for what?
I hope that this information will help to avoid you wasting money and valuable time trying to set up a basic dual opteron system.

Have you tried looking at the serial numbers through the packaging on the retail boxed version, it is difficult enough to read with the processor out of the packaging and there is nothing on the outside of the packaging to diferentiate one batch from another. Pretty pathetic considering AMD designed the 242 series for dual boards.
no i havent but i know its possible to get athlon xp with a certain number in sweden.
and if its like this it will give amd bad reputation.

  • Dual opteron supported on arch ?

I am thinking about a system with these parts :
    supermicro H8DAE-2 motherboard
    dual opteron 2379 HE processor
8 Gb for each processoor = total 16 Gb memory.
Is such a setup supported with 64-bit Archlinux ?

Dual Opteron processors are supported by the Linux kernel, so I guess it is supported by Archlinux too; also the 16 GB memory is not a problem

  • MSI Dual CoreCenter - fan speed warning

    Hi MSI community!
I have a MSI K9n Neo V2 and I have installed MSI Dual CoreCenter on my PC. Now the problem is that MSI DUal CoreCenter keeps warning me about low CPU fan speed (~900 rpm). I noticed that the limit is 1000 rpm. The thing is my CPU doesn't run hot, 30-40 °C (90-100 °F), so the warning is quite irritating.
Is there a way to turn off warning, or lower the warning fan speed limit (regedit?) so I still can use this program?
    Kind regards
    Mike

Are you overclocking the system? If not, don't use anything. You don't need a monitoring program. The bios does the work for you. (Meaning: the system will shut down when overheating. Meaning as well: the system will regulate fan speed).

  • MSI Dual-Net Card and Communications Slot

    Hey all,
ok, i want the MSI Dual-Net Card...i have HEARD that you need the MSI Communications Slot for it to work...is that true???
because there is absolutly NO MENTION of this on either the website or even in the manual for the card...
the manual even shows a picture of the card being installed into a NORMAL PCI slot...

I cant even use "Find device". I'm trying to connect to a cellphone which has bluetooth ( Ericsson k700i ).
yep, thats wat i have...and its the BEST Bluetooth software i've used...we have 3 Bluetooth USB Dongles in my house, and the software for them all (compared to this) is...well, just crap...
did u plug in the USB header??? for the bluetooth to work, it has to be connected to a USB header on the motherboard...
and i assume you've checked device manager to make sure the driver is installed...if not, do it...
BTW, i know wat was wrong with my Wireless Network...i had the Wireless Antenna and Bluetooth Antenna plugged into the wrong places      now my wireless has full strength!

  • MSI Dual Core Centre 2.0.1.0 (Fan Speed ALARM)

    Spec:
    MSI P965 Neo F v2.0
    Intel E6600 Core 2 Duo
    XFX-Nvidia 7800gt 256
    4 GB 800Mhz Ram
    Hi guys,
Anyone here know why the following would happen:
I use the MSI Dual Core Centre 2.0.1.0 for Windows XP... every so once in a while, the fan speed would drop to 0-RPM, and
a very irratating alarm would go off. This started to worry me, and I opened my side panel to look at the CPU Fan when the alarm goes off.
the Fan is turning at high velocity, but the alarm still goes off. Is there something wrong with this software ? or am I doing something wrong.
One minute it reports 2005-RPM, then it just shows 0-RPM, and the alarm goes off. My machine is about 2 months old.
Should I be making changes in the BIOS on the Mobo, to enable support for Dual Core Centre???
    Please help...very worried...
By the way "Speed Fan" reports no such alarms or CPU fan speed issues...
    What is going on ?

Not sure if this may work bc you reported fanspeed reaching zero.
On my system with 975XPUE, Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 always runs below 1K rpm.  So I have to use a user profile with Fan Min set about 833 rpm to avoid the annoying alarm.
If you don't find any solution to the reported fanspeed reaching zero, you might be able to at least disable the alarm by setting Fan Min in DCC to 0 rpm.  That or uninstall DCC as suggested by most forum users.

  • CAN'T get new dual Opteron to POST!

I just boaght a new MB/Chip/RAM set, consisting of:
    2 x Opteron 244
    MSI K8T Master2 - 9130 motherboard
    2 x Kingston 1GB Kit 400MHz DDR Registered ECC Double-Row 3-3-3 - KVR400X72RC3AK2/1GD
I'm using a 500 Watt PSU and an ATi 9700 video card. I have not been able to get it to post in this vanilla state. I have checked to ensure no shorts between the MB and case, have checked for bent pins on all IDE ports, chips, and jumpers, and have tested the system in all configurations from just chips, to a full system. No post at all. Any ideas? Need any more info? I'm desperate at this point, since I am all the tech support I have in my neck of the woods.

Yes, of course I did connect the main power.  I get power to all the fans in the system, but no post.  I never use the AGP pro power on my PSU, since none of the main stream cards ever decided to use it.  I got the board from newegg and have noticed that the only major issue them seem to have is sending out bad components.  Friends, reviews, whatever, they all seem to say the same thing.  I'll probably end up RMAing this thing.
As for my PSU, it's a Powamax 500w.
+3.3@28A,+5@30A, +12@25A, [email protected], [email protected]
It ran my dual MP system fine, and should have enough juice to post, even if it's not a top quality PSU.  I've never seen a PSU with this much wattage with less than 18A on the 12v rail, so it should boot up considering I have nothing else plugged in.  In any case, I did order one of the MSI recommended PSUs, and Enermax 460w.  If that does not work, back it goes I guess.

    Lates Update:
Finely Found SSI power supply :-)
    Didn't help :-(
I am runing out of ideas :-(
    - Tested RAM over the weekend 68 hours and no error detected.
    - Changed Video card, HDD, CD-Rom
    - Tried every posible combination of BIOS parametars
    - Puting in and out processors
    - Changing memory voltage
    - Power on in and out of the case
    - Tried to contact (SUSE, MSI, Transcend) - some luck here ;-)
    System still unbootable.
    And now some good news.
Guy from Transcend answered me promptly. They will try to recreate my problem and give me some feedback.
Found and installed MSI K8D Master-F MB, and i have system intalles and boot (SUSE in fail safe mode). I will figure it out how to make it work correctly i hope.
I would like if i could finaly get some respond from MSI. Or anyone who tryed 8GB combination.
I let you know if something new come up.
    Thank You for Your replays.
