DRM Questions

I have a few questions on iTunes purchased media and the DRM on them. I have purchased quite a bit of music and videos and want the freedom to use them how I please. How do I remove the annoying AAC encoding without having to buy some ridiculous third-party software?
I read something about iTunes Plus; can I download everything I have again so it can be DRM-free? I feel it's really obnoxious that I buy these files (which are just digital so Apple makes crazy profit already) and then I have to go through additional steps to just use it how I please.
How long before the "best" option is to lease an iPod or iPad, or rent the same files we're purchasing now.

Surely "AAC encoding" and "DRM" are two separate things!
AAC encoding is the format (or filetype) in which the file has been "made" and it's proprietary to Apple. If you want songs that you can put on a non-Apple mp3 player, then you should buy your music in mp3 format. Many other online music sellers sell the music in mp3 format, try one of them.
However, the same restrictions about redistributing or giving your music to someone else (as mentioned in other posts in this thread) still apply.
DRM is/was the "copy protection" which prevented people from making copies of the music. So the same piece of music could be in AAC with _or without_ DRM, or in mp3 with _or without_ DRM.
Phil
P.S. Before anyone suggests that the point I made above, namely: "if you want songs that you can put on a non-Apple mp3 player, then you should buy your music in mp3 format" is some sort of infringment of copyright - no it's not. One day my iPod will fail.I may then choose to buy a different brand of "mp3" player. Note that it's an mp3 player, which will play mp3s, but not necessarily AAC files.

  • No More DRM Question

    I saw the announcement today that all new music purchased in iTunes will not have DRM... Is there any way to re-download all of my existing purchases without the DRM on it? We have 2 iPhones, 2 iPods (pre-iphone purchases that we keep in our vehicles) and 3 computers... It would be great to have all of my music available for all of the computers (instead of the limit of 5)...

    Hi,
    A1- Check it with this - Note- The third parameter of the Equals condition is a space and so before you save the formula make sure to Uncheck the "Remove Spaces" check-box
    If(Or(
    Equals(String,SubString(Abbrev(),1,1), ),
    Equals(String,SubString(Abbrev(),Length(Abbrev()),1), )
    ),False,True)
    A4- I think you have this answered in another post of yours.
    A6- There is no automatic way to generate those prefixes for you within DRM, however you cant put in a validation to prompt for a specific prefix when user tries to add a node. See if it helps.
    A7- The best way to do it. is to have prefixes specific to hierarchy and then create nodes only with those prefixes like i mentioned in A6

  • ITunes DRM Question

    I recently purchased a season pass of a TV show in HD and I was wondering whether I can stream the episodes to my television that is located in the basement. I don't have Apple TV but I do however own a iPod, PS3 and the Xbox 360. I also do not want to directly connect my MBP via a VGA connection to my HDTV. Is it possible to stream my purchased episodes over the network or is there any other way to view them without using iTunes?
    Thanks!

    Is it possible to stream my purchased episodes over the network or is there any other way to view them without using iTunes?
    No. Purchased video from iTunes store requires iTunes, AppleTV or an iPod to be played.
    You can connect your iPod to televison and watch it.

    Thank you! This worked. But now I copied my files back, which was successful. But the last file did´t work. I even loaded this file from the bookstore. When I try to load this file, ADE crashes and gives me the following report:

  • DRM/MDM Import and Export File types - Question

    Hi Guys,
    We have been implementing Hyperion DRM to our existing Oracle Environment for managing the company's sales data which comes from multiple data sources. In my experience and research, I feel DRM is an excellent tool but there are some questions I have in our mind. The following are the few questions that I\we have.
    a) How does the Import and Export of data functionality works in DRM? In this forum, I have found some one saying we can only import the data through flat files, in other words, "text file" with the delimiters [ ] seperated by comma. My question is, Is there any other possible way to import the data, Such as getting the data directly from the database tables? To get the data, Do we need to have any integration points or do we need to use SOAP APIs (& programming)?
    b) While we exporting the data, can we export it directly to the Oracle database tables? What are the integration points needed for this kind of export?
    c) Is there any sample guide or design document available for creating the hierarchy and nodes. I just want to know how the attributes that we have "is transformed" into the hierarchies and nodes in DRM? In the past, I used Essbase, which is integrated with DRM and that process was straight forward since we imported and exported data directly from DRM to Essbase.
    I would appreciate any suggestion offered to me regarding the questions posted above.
    Thanks in advance,
    Leo

    Hi,
    1.As per my knowledge the Import can be done using Flat files only,we can import the data from Oracle Tables once the structure is ready in DRM.
    2.We have an utility called Export to Table(in the last tab when you performing an Export along with Export to File), which requires the DB mapping to be done properly,
    Thanks!

  • Question about Reader DRM activation

    Hi All
    I got a paper "FAQ ACS Discontinuation of Sales, November 30, 2004"
    I have a question about ACS.
    As I konw, ACS is discontinued effective November 30, 2004.
    and I read a section in paper below:
    Q. Will Adobe Reader and Acrobat users get support from Adobe for eBook issues?
    A. Support is not available for the free Adobe Reader, however, assistance for user activation is
    available until December 31, 2006.
    Does it mean Reader activation service will be stop until December 31, 2006?
    That's a big problem for our ebook service!!

    Adobe communicated in January to ACS customers that the DRM Activator service would remain operational until December 31, 2007, one year longer than previously announced.
    If you didn't receive this announcement, send your contact info (email and surface mail) to "[email protected]".
    You'll receive an autotmated reply that your email bounced but it will then be manually confirmed.

  • Another DRM Activator (error) question...

    Hello gang,
    I've got a user on a brand new machine this morning after the old one died abruptly.
    We were able to obtain her ONE Adobe D/E document and just a handful of others docs from her old machine (not accessible any longer). But she only had this one Adobe Digital Editions file....... and now she cannot open it.....
    We've installed Adobe D/E's latest (as of 2 hours ago) and are having one helluva time opening HER document citing the following error below....
    The Meat Buyers Guide.PDF
    Adobe DRM Error
    System: 7
    State: 4
    Class: 15
    Code: 57
    Message: Error on request or response from server.
    Please check your network connection and try again.
    Scroll below or view error.log for more details.
    Your Adobe software could not be activated.
    The Adobe DRM Activator is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.
    --- end ---
    First it mentions not being available. But I can successfully launch http://adeactivate.adobe.com/  I grabbed from an Adobe KB, plus Library > Authorize Computer says she's OK (can't think of msg exactly, but it wasn't an error).
    Suggestions???
    BWB

    Unfortunately that file is no longer recoverable.  That error code indicates that the file was encrypted using an ACS3 server.  Until Dec 15th 2009, it was possible to migrate ACS3 protected content using Adobe Digital Editions (1.5 or above - basically the past year and half), however on Dec 15th the Activation server for the ACS3 server was taken offline.  (see http://www.adobe.com/products/contentserver/migrate.html for details )
    While this does not affect the ability to read content on a currently working machine, if that machine dies (as is the case for this user) you will no longer be able to read the content.
    If the user thinks that they did migrate the file (by opening it up in ADE post 1.5) then make sure you are getting the correct copy of the file from the 'My Digital Editions' (it'll differ from the original by having the information needed to open it up in ADE now, added at the bottom of the file ).

  • Questions regarding DRM and MP3 quality

    Hello,
    Im using Music+ on the Lumia 800 and Im considering buying y first album on Nokia Music however there are a few things I need to know (hopefully somebody willl be able to help me).
    Is the music DRM free? Will i be able to transfer my music from phone to desktop/vice versa whenever i feel like it? Download again in the future etc? I have seen answers to this on Nokias site, but it also mentions non existing sotware and services.
    Is high quaity MP3 actually high quality?
    I would love a lossless or uncompressed music service but I've been unable to find one (anyone know of one?), but It seems that if i want to be able to buy music on my device and download instantly I also have to cope with terrible audio-quality. I bought a number of albums on iTunes before i noticed that the terrible MP3-compression actually made the music sound distorted when played on great speakers (I guess the mix will have to take some of the blame, but still). Sorry for going on but i geuss what I would really like to know is:
    What am i actually paying for here?
    Replies are greatly appreciated!

    Hey,
    I've only recently started using the Nokia Music service and am also trying to find out more information about it.  With regards to DRM, I don't know if there are levels that can be applied, but so far I've had no problems transferring music purchased through NM on to my PC. I do this using the standard Windows file manager.  I haven't tried it on other devices though.
    As for quality, I'm still trying to clarify that myself.  From what I can gather though, if you purchase a song as a stand alone, then you get the file at a lower bit rate (64kbps AAC or 128kbps MP3), however, if you sign up for NM+ where you pay a monthly fee, then the songs you download come in at a higher quality 192kbps.
    There is a reasonably comprehensive overview of the service in both its standard and premium format here.
    Hope that helps.

    I have a question is there any way I can put music from my iPad to my iPod? Some one said to me yes by using a DRM

    Would those work if I am using the 4g wifi hotspot on the ipad to get the music onto an ipod touch?  I am willing to give up third party music if this would work. Just not sure if it would work since the 4g wifi has that 50mb restriction

    This error has been seen once before in 11.1.2.2 with action scripts where the root cause was running out of space in the file system where the DRM tablespaces were stored when trying to auto-extend. Have you got any database related entries in the Windows application event log when the problem occurs?

  • Question-MDM or DRM

    Forgive my ignorance, but is MDM known as DRM in 11.1.1.4??
    I have an MDM 9.2.0.0 installed on a hyperion 11.1.1.3 environment and works without any issues.Will it work for 11.1.1.4 too ?
    Also, Can you let me know about the procedure to be followed for migration.. The documentation on the Oracle website seems rather vague.

    It's essentially the same thing. As of 9.3.1 (If I remember correctly), they changed the branding from MDM to DRM. What you will notice also is that, as of v 11, they moved completely from a "console" model to a web model, i.e., no more client install, but everything is available from a web front end.

  • Modprobe question (pre-install drm modules via modprobe on start-up)

    I'm trying to follow the dri building guide but archlinux doesn't have /etc/modules.conf so what do I do?
    2.6.x kernels:
    pre-install <drm module> /sbin/modprobe "-k" "agpgart"
    pre-install agpgart /sbin/modprobe "-k" "<agp chipset driver>"
    Thats what I'm trying to do. For more info go here:
    http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Buildin … 16c0c945a7
    I don't know if I should make a /etc/modules.conf or add what to what. Specific instructions would be great. Btw i have a via chipset (vt8237) and an ati radeon (9800 pro) graphics card. Thanks in advance.
    btw correct me if I'm wrong:
    /etc/rc.conf:
    LOCALE="en_US.utf8"
    HARDWARECLOCK="UTC"
    USEDIRECTISA="no"
    TIMEZONE="America/Chicago"
    KEYMAP="us"

    CONSOLEMAP=
    USECOLOR="yes"
    #not sure if a line in MODULES=(...) should be made or not
    MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
    MODULES=(pre-install radeon /sbin/modprobe "-k" "agpgart"
    pre-install agpgart /sbin/modprobe "-k" "via_agp")
    USELVM="no"
    HOSTNAME="archie"
    eth0="eth0  192.168.0.10 netmask  255.255.255.0 broadcast  192.168.0.255"
    INTERFACES=(eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    DAEMONS=(!syslog-ng !netfs !crond network hal fam alsa gdm)
    Now what do I put in /etc/modprobe.conf (if anything) because I'm really confused

    By default, the only modprobe.conf file that exists in a new install will be blank.  The file is mostly used to either pass specific arguments to a kernel on boot-up so these args will be then inserted into userspace and used by whatever app needs them.  EG: There are examples of this regarding Alsa and blacklisting or adding special arguments in modprobe.conf for the hda-intel on-board soundcards.
    As to what to put into that file, I can't tell you (didn't read the link yet).  I can tell you that you likely should just create it first then re-read what you're trying to do.  These lines won't go into rc.conf, that much I know:
    pre-install <drm module> /sbin/modprobe "-k" "agpgart"
    pre-install agpgart /sbin/modprobe "-k" "<agp chipset driver>"
    In all likelihood you must either insert these into the modprobe.conf file itself OR run them as root commands.  As I said, haven't read the link so I don't know for sure.  Sorry, and I don't have time to read up much more.

  • ITunes plus/drm/iPhone question

    When I upgrade my iTunes music library to iTunes plus, is the music on my iPhone automatically updated to itunes plus (drm free) when I sync my iPhone to iTunes? Or do I have to manually replace the songs on my iphone with the new drm free songs?

    iTunes knows if anything has changed - a comma, the artwork, the whole song file, whatever - and will update the iPod at the next automatic sync.
