DRM Removal on Existing Purchased Music

I read yesterday that Apple has removed DRM from all new purchased music files. What happens with already purchased songs (and I have many)?. How do I remove the DRM from already purchased files?
northbells

But if I already paid for these songs & some of them don't even show up on my ipod... what is the deal with that?
You don't have them sync'd to the iPod. Are they in iTunes?
so that you have to keep paying for what was to be a one time fee.
It is a one time fee.
Once you purchase it, it's yours. You don’t have to pay again.
If you have 128 kbps DRM songs in Tunes, you can choose to upgrade them (for .30 each) to 256 kbps, DRM free if you wish but you are under no obligation to do so.

  • Why can't I tunes match provide drm free versions for purchased music?

I bought Itunes match thinking that I was going to upgrade my entire library of purchased music from what was promised in their ads.   most of my music does not seem to be available in drm free versions.  is that normal?

    Hi,
Most music can be upgraded with only a very small number not qualifying because the version of track is no longer available. Upgrading is not automatic. You need to delete the original and download upgraded version.

  • I was downloading music from my partners purchased music on my phone and it wiped all my existing music, how can i get my music back as i dont have it on my computer anymore?

i was downloading music from my partners purchased music on my phone and it wiped all my existing music, how can i get my music back as i dont have it on my computer anymore? please help me

If you bought this music from iTunes you can download it again from within your Purchases in the iTunes App.
Otherwise, razmee is right. you can only sync to one itunes library.  If you sync to another one whatever does not exist on the new library will get removed from the phone.
That's is by design to avoid Piracy. As otherwise you could simply transfer purchases to other users.

when I go transfer my puschased iteams on my itunes it says "Are you sure you want to remove all existing music, movies, tv shows and tones from this ipod and sync with this itunes libary?"
I'm so confused what will it do? and what will it mean???

Follow these instructions to not lose any data. When you restore from backup as the article says the iPod will also be updated.

  • How do I remove purchased music from my iPhone?

I have purchased music using my iphone.  Now I'm trying to remove the tracks from the phone.  They are not on any of my playlists that I have set to sync, but they are always still synced to my phone.  I have even gone as far as unchecking the Sync Music option in iTunes.  This removed all my playlisat tracks, but the purchased tracks are still on my iPhone.
How do I get them off? I thought there used to be an option on the Sync Music page of iTunes whenever I bought a track, but now I don't see it.

Synch your phone with iTunes and transfer your purchases to your computer.
Then once you're sure those songs are safely on your computer, unsynch them from your iPhone by unchecking them in iTunes.

  • TS3297 iPad.    I removed music for storage   That take   re of and all nusic off of keeps on saying download error for purchased music.   Two weeks

I cannot download purchased music on iPad 2.   Error   It is not a storage issue

I also had system issues a couple of weekends ago. I had to restore my computer. Once complete I reinstalled iTunes and then set all of my backup files in place (I back up my iTunes folder everytime I purchase something). The problem is, everytime I click on anything I purchased, movie or song, it tells me I am not authorized on this computer. I also am using just one computer and have been using the same one for the last couple of years. I attempted to deauthorized my system by following the instructions here in the forum plus instructions found on the site. After aproximatly 30 minutes I gave up on entering my user name and password over and over and over again. Do you know of anything else I can try? Thank you for the assistance:-)

  • HT2736 Why can't I use my existing iTunes balance to purchase music as gifts?

It seems kind of dumb that I would need to use my credit card to purchase music as gifts when I have sufficient money available in my iTunes balance. This makes no sense to me. It would almost be better to purchase the music to my account, find and copy the folder it downloaded to and then send that to the person I was buying the gift for in the first place. At least this way we would both have the music!

"It seems kind of dumb that I would need to use my credit card to purchase music as gifts when I have sufficient money available in my iTunes balance. This makes no sense to me. "
it does not have ot make sense to you.  This is the way the itunes store works.
"It would almost be better to purchase the music to my account, find and copy the folder it downloaded to and then send that to the person I was buying the gift for in the first place. At least this way we would both have the music!"
    That is illegal.

  • HT1711 remove my purchase music from my iphone

I wand to remove my old purchase from my iphone music

Michael, if this is true I am even more ticked with Apple iTunes than I was before!
Why would I think I would lose all my songs saves on my device? The directions did not warn me about this!
My backups area few thousand miles away at my home. I won't be back for many months! So I guess I will be without them until then.  Very disturbing. iTunes Match is worthless to me now. I wonder if I can get a refund?
I will try to contact an apple representative

  • IPhoto 4.03 & iTunes 6.04, purchased music says, it needs to be authorized.

iPhoto 4.03 & iTunes 6.04, my purchased music keeps saying it needs to be authorized, for my computer. I select a piece of music for an iPhoto slide show and repeatedly go through the authorization process and then no music; no matter how many times, I try. Any Suggestions?

Good point... In trying to save a step or two, I didn't think it completely through. But cannot iTunes' DRM be removed by simply burning a playlist to CD? Your track(s) should then be available from that CD (or for import from it) for your slideshow.

  • Missing Purchase Music

I reloaded my computer and have all of my music in existing folder structures on my PC. I was able to connect to Apple and bring down my purchased music again but then was asked if I wanted iTunes to manage my folders for me or not. I said "yes" and that's when my purchased music disappeared. I've since uninstalled iTunes / reinstalled. Removed new iTunes folder structure that was created when i said "yes" and still "no luck". Now when I try to get my purchase music again it says you already downloaded it to this machine

  • DRM removal

With iTunes Plus gone, what are my options to remove DRM from older downloads? I have a large enough number that burning to discs then ripping them again is not practical.

iTunes Plus is not gone, but the offer by which you could upgrade tracks for 30 cents apiece ended a few months ago.
The best way now is to subscribe to iTunes Match.  Then you can upgrade to the matched versions.  It works pretty simply, per this document:
Can I upgrade my previously purchased music to iTunes Plus?
Yes. If you subscribe to iTunes Match, you can download your previously purchased music again in the iTunes Plus format. To do so:
You need to delete the original DRM song from your library first. Doing this enables you to download the song again in the iTunes Plus format from iTunes in the Cloud.
Click the Purchased tab in the iTunes Store.
    Click Music.
Locate the artist of the song you want to upgrade.
Click the iCloud Download icon next to the song you want to upgrade.

  • Is there a limit to how many times you can burn a CD of purchased music?

Sorry if this is a common question...
I tend to buy music in the iTunes store, then burn CDs to listen to in my car. They get scratched up a lot so I will usually need to burn them several times. Will iTunes allow me to do this with DRM-protected, purchased music, as many times as I need?

You can only burn any given playlist containing tracks from the iTunes Music Store a maximum of seven times. After that, you have to change the playlist in some way (adding or removing a track will do) or create a new playlist.

  • Purchased music / Authorization?

Even though music from the iTunes Store is now provided in DRM-less 256-bit AAC files, is it still the case that these files can only be played on iTunes software that includes the same authorized account that purchased the song?
Let's say I manually copy a .m4a file that I've downloaded from the iTunes Store to a thumb drive. I then take that thumb drive to a friend's house. He fires up iTunes and tells it to add that file to his Library. Will the dialog box pop up saying that I need to use one of my five authorizations on his laptop before it will play? If I do use one, can I then deauthorize his laptop once he's heard it?
    TIA.

Here's what the iTunes help has to say about DRM:
Usage rights for iTunes Store purchases
Many of the items you purchase from the iTunes Store are protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM). These protected purchases can be:
Played on up to five authorized computers
Synced with your iPod, iPhone, or iPad
Synced with or streamed to your Apple TV
All songs offered by the iTunes Store now come without DRM protection. These DRM-free songs, called iTunes Plus, have no usage restrictions and feature high-quality 256 kbps AAC encoding.
If you already have iTunes Store purchases that are now available as iTunes Plus downloads, you may upgrade your existing purchases. To do so, visit the iTunes Store and follow the onscreen instructions.
Songs are a subset of iTunes Store items. The wording of the above seems to mean that while there are still a number of items one can purchase from the iTunes Store that have DRM, all songs do not. Furthermore, since songs do not have DRM, they are not subject to the "5 authorized computers" restriction.
My interest isn't in buying songs from the iTunes Store and giving them to friends. In fact, I've never purchased anything from the iTunes Store, which is why I'm not clear on what the limitations are and are not.
Rather, it's to understand how easy/complicated it is to move .m4a files from a friend's laptop that's being retired to her new iMac. In my world, where all my .mp3 files have been ripped from my CDs, it would simply be a matter of copying the file structure I use and then adding the root folder to the Library on the iMac. The issue of authorization would never come up.
The quoted help text above suggests this is now the case with songs from the iTunes Store (but not other, still-protected content). That's what I'm trying to verify.

  • Purchased Music Download... Frozen for over 12 hours!

    Album: Pinoy Ako
    Songs: 14
    Price: $9.99
11:50PM - Purchased 2 Singles and Album with iTMS $15 card. Balance is now $0.90
11:52PM - The 2 singles and 4 (out of 14) album songs downloaded. Downloading is frozen. I rebooted the computer, many times. Same result!
iTunes displays, "Downloading 1 of 10 Laklak". Bar stopped at approximately 40%. Laklak is a 3 minute 9 second song! The bar does not move and no more songs are downloading.
At around 2:30AM, I sent my FIRST E-Mail message to iTMS customer support, and got rewarded with an auto-reply letter. No human response!
At around 7:30AM, I sent my SECOND E-Mail message to iTMS customer support, and got rewarded my second auto-reply letter. This time, I've asked for a refund... For 4 out of 14 songs purchased for $9.99+tax, I should be refunded $2.85+tax. Still no human response! I turned off the computer at 7:45AM.
At 11:45AM, Seattle Local Time, I turned on the computer, and started up iTunes. Sure enough, iTunes offered to look for Purchased music, and surprise: "Downloading 1 of 10 Laklak" Downloading Bar permanently frozen at approximately 40%. The bar stops below the letter "w" in "Downloading".
Balance is $0.90... $7.14 LOSS and NO Human Response from Apple!
This album is on my dad's account. He is 70 Years Old, so I am configuring his iPod Shuffle. Unfortunately, iTunes Music Store gives a BAD impression to my 70 Year Old Father.
I have written Apple, demanding the refund... Also, I have stated that I will NOT make any further purchases in iTMS unless I get a refund. I have purchased videos such as Law & Order SVU, Conviction, Blade, A-Team, and Knight Rider. I guess I paid Apple too much money to fill up my 30GB Video iPod.
My Dad's computer is a Intel Mac Mini (Single Core) with iPod Shuffle.
My computer is an iBook G4 with 30GB Video iPod.
My internet connection is 5Mbps DSL. (A 3-minute song in iTMS should not take 12 hours to download!)
Does anyone have a phone number to iTunes Music Store? Sending E-Mail to their customer support is wasting my time. (Allocated 2 hours, not 14 hours!) I plan to Snapshot the screen and post it on my .Mac web page, or better yet, make a podcast of the Frozen Download... Somebody in Apple must know that this was my 1st Album purchase and that I will start advertising Album downloading feature of iTunes is not stable. In fact, once a download is frozen, no other "Protected" downloads can happen.
iTMS should charge ONLY when 100% of the music was successfully downloaded, not before. Can't buy anything for $0.90! Over the past 12 hours, I paid $2.01 for each of the 7 songs I have downloaded and they are NOT videos!
Last time I had a frozen download was in April 2006... That only lasted about two (2) hours. And Apple responded to E-Mail within 30 minutes.
Anyone have any ideas on how to get a refund from Apple?
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   AMD Sempron Laptop (SUSE Linux 10), Dell Inspron Laptop (Ubuntu Linux), Nokia 770

    There is no phone number for the iTunes Music Store;
the web form is the only contact. Give them a bit of
time; you just contacted them late last night, and it
often takes them 72 hours to respond. And their first
response (once you get through the automated replies
is very unlikely to be a refund; more likely they'll
offer suggestions as to how to get the downloads to
    work.
On that subject, here are a couple of things for you
    to check:
    - make sure that your father's system has the latest
    version of QuickTime and iTunes;
    - check to see if your father's system has any sort
of download/web accelerator. Those almost always
cause problems with the iTunes Music Store.
and of course check with his Internet service
provider to make sure they're not having router
problem, as has sometimes been the case (one recent
one in, I believe, Canada caused all sorts of problem
for iTMS users and it wasn't Apple's fault at all).
Good luck getting it all sorted out.
My Dad's Computer: intel Mac Mini (Single Core)
Before starting up iTunes on my dad's computer, I had to remove his expired .Mac account and perform a software upgrade to 10.4.7. The computer had all the software updates performed by 11pm Tuesday night. His account is a regular account and my account on the computer is an Admin account.
iTunes 6.0.5 (20) on the Intel Mac Mini. Software Update says there are no more software updates.
My dad's iTMS account is a different account from what I am using. I use my iBook G4 right next to my dad's Mac Mini. Both computers are running iTunes. Both computer have fast connections through 5Mbps DSL.
On my dad's computer, I have the Apple firewall disabled and the DSL router configured as DMZ to that computer. iTMS fails to download everything that was purchased.
Considering that the firewalls are not the problem, I restored the firewalls.
On my iBook G4, my iTunes work fine, I can download the Free stuff from iTMS. I will not make a purchase until my Dad's iTMS account gets all the songs.
On the Mac Mini, another song downloaded after restarting iTunes three more times.
I think there is a BUG within iTunes... It does NOT timeout and does NOT display any errors. Also, there is NO way to skip a song and have it download later. The downloading sequence is permanent, set by the billing computer.
The downloads stop at the same point, the bar stops just below the "w" in "Downloading".
I wont have my dad's computer for too much longer... If I don't get any resolutions BEFORE my dad gets his computer back, I will just DISABLE iTMS on his iTunes, because this Apple problems are too much for a 70 year old man to deal with. I will teach him how to rip CD music into iTunes and have him put the music onto his iPod Shuffle.
In the Business World, TIME is precious... 72 hours can make or break a deal. In this matter, the Lack of Customer Support in a timely fashion can mean the Loss of another Customer. --- Maybe, by the time Apple does respond, I will answer them, "I fixed the problem and stopped using iTunes Music Store. We are now getting music by ripping audio CDs."
