Drobo   Time Machine   Thunderbolt to FW adapter = Drobo doesn't get detected

Hello,
I have a Drobo (early generation with Firewire) attached to my iMac via Thunderbolt to FW adapter. It's the drive that I use for Time Machine.
Unfortunately, every time I turn on my iMac, it doesn't detect the Drobo, though if I then unplug and then plug in the Drobo, it will detect it. Obviously, I don't want to have to do this every time I turn on my iMac.
Any thoughts as to what the issue might be?
Thanks,
John

Hello John C Lin,
It sounds like you have a firewire device is not detected automatically when you log in, but if you disconnect and reconnect the device it will then be detected. I suggest trying these troubleshooting steps from the article named:
USB and FireWire Quick Assist
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1151?viewlocale=en_US
Try a different port and cable
Connect your device to a different USB or FireWire port on your Mac. If you connected your device to a USB or FireWire hub or to a port on another USB or FireWire device that's connected to your Mac (known as daisy chaining), connect your device directly to a port on your computer. Some devices need to draw power from a USB or FireWire port to work; if you connect a device to a non-powered hub (one that isn't plugged in to a power source) or to a low-power port (such as the one on your USB keyboard), it may not work. If you have another known-good cable, try swapping the cable to see if that works. If it does, you should replace the problematic cable.
Check for device conflicts
Disconnect all USB or FireWire devices (including hubs and extension cables) except for your Apple keyboard and mouse. Then, connect the device in question directly to your computer. If your device works now, there may be a conflict between that device and one of your other USB or FireWire devices. If it doesn't work, go to tip 8. If you do have a conflict, you can determine which devices are affected. Connect your other devices to your Mac, one by one, making sure to test that each device works before making another connection. When you find the device that causes the issue, contact the manufacturer for assistance (check both manufacturers' websites for software updates and additional information).
Quit associated applications
If you're using a particular application that uses the device in question (for example, you're using Image Capture with a USB scanner), try quitting the application and then opening it again.
Try another user account or computer
If you have another Mac available, try connecting your device to that other computer to see if it works. If you don't have another computer available, log in to another user account on your Mac (or create a new user account and log in to it), and test the device again. If the device is working now, there may be a software conflict between the device and something in your original user account.
Check System Profiler for hardware Issues
Open System Profiler (from the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, then click More Info) and then click either USB or FireWire. If you don't see your device listed in the pane, the issue could be with the device itself or your computer's USB or FireWire port. To rule out the port, plug the device into another USB or FireWire port on your Mac and then check System Profiler again (press Command-R to refresh the window). Also try resetting the FireWire bus. If you see your device listed in the pane but it doesn't work, you may want to contact the device's manufacturer for assistance.
If the issue is not resolved I would next reset the SMC and the PRAM, then retest the issue:

My time machine backups continue to fail. I keep getting the message: sparse bundle occupied. Any suggestions?

Half off all problems seem to be solved by simply powering off a device, waiting a few minutes, and then powering it back up again.
What happens when you do this for the Time Capsule?

  • Mavericks Drobo Time Machine problem

On a new iMac with Mavericks, a new (December) Drobo 5D, I get "Time Machine couldn't . . " "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder." Disk Utility says everything is OK.  Drobo diagnostics (submitted to Drobo Support) apparently show no problems. "Not seeing any issues in the diagnostic file you submitted.  No disconnections and no drive issues.  Looks clean."
If I reboot, Time Machine works fine. Time Machine backup works fine. Everything seems fine.
Today is the fourth time in three weeks the problem has appeared.
Where does the responsibility for this lie? With Drobo or Apple? Neither side shows a problem. I am feeling frustrated.

    Thank you, Norm G.
This "An error occurred while creating the backup folder" is not addressed by that support article. The problem has occurred with both Thunderbolt and USB-3 cables. Restarting currently seems to be the solution.
The Drobo replaces a LaCie 4TB drive that is full; this problem never occurred with that drive. The Drobo was formatted and set-up following Drobo instructions. Drobo has no suggestions since the diagnostics don't show a problem on their end.
So far, I can live with the restarting - since everything else functions normally.

  • My Time Machine can't talk to Drobo anymore

I use a Drobo NAS as my primary fault tolerant Time Machine disk.  After installing Lion, I can't get to any backups prior to the install.  I'm able to connect, etc. but no access from Time Machine.  Does anyone else run Drobo and Lion sucessfully?
This is an issue because my Address Book got wiped out during the Lion upgrade and Mobile Me made sure to wipe it out on my iPhone and iPad2 also.  In recovery mode.

Just FYI, ISCSI does not work with Lion Server and I believe people are having problem with Lion Client also.  Additionally I have had lock-ups with FW800 using Lion Server. Seems there are many people in the forums with the same problems. I am thinking of getting back to USB to see if even that works.  Right now Lion Server with Drobo seems severely broken.
I have the following from Drobo Support.
Thank you for contacting Drobo Technical Support.
I am very sorry for the inconvenience.
Unfortunately the update to Lion has broken compatibility with iSCSI devices. Until we can get the Dashboard updated, or GlobalSan comes out with a Lion compatible iSCSI connection, I recommend switching to Firewire 800.
I know it is not actually an answer and FW800 has also had problems. I will be switching to USB shortly to see if that works. BTW this seems to be the case with or without Spotlight running.

  • Time Machine backup mirrors Hard Drive, but doesn't back up

I noticed a few days ago that my external hard drive, on which I store my Time Machine backups, only mirrors the content of my Hard Drive instead of actually backing up. I don't know if it has anything to do with that fact that I finally recently upgraded from OS Snow Leopard to OS Lion, which is the last OS upgrade my late 2007 model MacBook will accept. I'm using 10.7.5, build 11G63
I can drag files from my Time Machine backup folders going back to Feb. 22, 2013 on to my desktop, but they do not copy. Instead, they move out onto the desk top from the Time Machine folders and the same files disappear from the equivalent hard drive file folders, as if they had been dragged to the desk top. Likewise, any file I drag from any hard drive folder to the desk top disappears from the equivalent Time Machine folder. Conversely, files moved from the desk top to either a Time Machine folder or its hard drive equivalent show up in the other.
I don't know the significance of the Feb. 22 date, since I upgraded to OS Lion sometime after that.
    Any suggestions?

I solved this myself. I found that, after upgrading to Mac OS Lion from Snow Leopard, some of the aliased folders in my Time Machine backup hard drive are not locked, but the regular folders are locked. Apparently this is new in Lion. (As I mentioned above, my MacBook is too old to upgrade to Mountain Lion.) I had based my query above on my ability to delete things from some aliased folders on my backup hard drive. Fortunately, they are locked in the equivalent non-aliased folders.

  • Time Machine Running Very Slow After Repairing Permission under "get info"

    Hi,
I have a timemachine backup external hard drive which had permissions problem (perhaps this is because I crossed over from 10.5 to 10.6 at some point?)  When I enter timemachine some files had that red minus sign beside it and told me "you don't have permission to access its content", and this problem was not with all files but with some of files and folders scattered all over my backed up 500GB data.
This created a problem and i wasn't gonna go in and open "get info" for each folder and go under sharing & permissions to manually fix it to read & write (and I believe some files didn't even allow me to do this)
Now here is the real concern.  What I did without thinking is I right clicked on the external hard drive in the finder and opened the "get info" window and went down to the sharing and permissions.  At first I fixed all privileges to "read & write" by unlocking the lock, but this still didn't fix all restrictions on accessing files and folders.
So instead I clicked on the icon which appears to be a "gear" and selected the "apply to enclosed items" and ran this operation on my whole 2TB hard drive.  This of course took over 12 hours as far as I can remember.  And I think in some forum it said this can create a problem? (Granting permissions to some system related files which can cause critical problems perhaps)
I also think this action I took has caused the time machine external hard drive to run slow in almost every way.  My question I guess is, is there a way to revert my action of clicking on the gear and running the "apply to enclosed items"?  Or perhaps another fix?
I have no idea on how to go onwards from here and worried that if I continue using this all-permissions-altered 2TB hard drive that it will create a huge problem in the future.
Any advise from senior members and/or members who encountered such situations would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Norio

Do not attempt to change the permissions on your backups.
And the problem you are having, on Lion, is far different from these old Leopard threads.

  • How does Time Machine decide what to delete when its disk gets full?

Time Machine deletes the "oldest" backups when it needs more room for a new backup. But exactly what does that mean? Does it delete the oldest backups for the disk being backed up? Or does it delete the oldest backups across all source disks?
For example, if I back up N Macs to a single drive until it is nearly full, what happens when I add the N+1th Mac and start backing it up? Will it remove some existing files to make room for the new disk's backup, or will it just say "no more room"?
The answer to this question will affect my choice of backup disks to purchase.

If you're backing up multiple Macs to a TM backup Volume then if the TM Volume's free space becomes exhausted and TM cannot find room for the current backup it will start trying to delete the oldest backup snapshots associated with the Mac being backed up. It will not touch backup snapshots for the other Macs.
After 37 days all TM snapshots will be weekly snapshots (with a Sunday date). So if you've been running TM for 37 days or longer there will be one or more weekly snapshots. TM will start with the oldest weekly snapshot and start trimming away to make more disk space available.
TM is supposed to alert you BEFORE it starts deleting oldest snapshots but at this time it will perform these deletes silently and as much as it can and then only if there's insufficient space will it tell you it has deleted old snapshots but there's still insufficient space for the backup

  • Time Machine running out of space but doesn't delete old backups

    First some context:
I am running Parallels Desktop on a 2011 iMac. The VM is on a partition that is excluded from Time Machine.
I have a second partition where I copy the VM every night using CCC. (This avoids TM backing up a large VM every hour).
TM says initial backup is 220 GB. I have a 1TB USB drive attached. So normally, this works fine.
This morning 100GB were copied to my Parallels Desktop partition. So TM should copy something in excess of 100GB during backup.
Currently, only 15GB are free on my backup volume. But TM doesn't try to delete old backups. It doesn't seem to recognize the size of the backup. Instead when it starts, it predicts about 1GB to backup. Then during backup the amount grows (note that no new data is changed during backup!) and it finally hits the wall at 15GB because the disk is full.
Any idea why TM doesn't figure out the real backup size?
Here's the log from TM Buddy:

  • Time machine couldn't back up seagate backup plus, Not Detected...

I just bought the Seagate backup plus in December when my overly fragile macbook air screen cracked & I had to have it repaired...Anyway, of course I wanted a backup before sending it for repair.
I had nothing but trouble setting it up & getting it to make a backup, right out of the box & had to email, then call tech support.  It had been working fine, until I updated whatever the latest version of Maverick's or whatever update came out.  It has not backed up since April 16th.  The light comes on for the backup plus.  I googled & found something about firmware, so I went through that download process & it said the backup plus was up to date.  I plug it into the USB & still nothing.  It's just an error message saying "Backup delayed", then I click on Back Up Now & get an error saying Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Seagate Backup Plus Drive".  The backup disk could not be found.  Make sure the backup disk is connected or select a different backup disk.  How wonderful.  I also went to the Seagate website and found a troubleshooting guide, which was also worthless.  The only thing it said was that it might be set to "sleep" and going through all this firmware and disconnecting and re-connecting and rebooting was supposed to fix this issue.  I am so frustrated now, I can't even stand it.  It is Finals week, I am in the Nursing program, which believe me is not an easy curriculum & now this!  god forbid my life ever be without frustration and challenges, I feel like I am never ever going to be happy or have a good life, something is always wrong, I hate technology, I spend hours and hours and hours trying to figure things out, & then they just get messed up with an update and never work the same again.

It had been working fine, until I updated whatever the latest version of Maverick's or whatever update came out.
Yes, know the issue.  Did you EVER install any (utterly worthless) hard drive control software that came bundled with that ext. USB hard drive?
OR especially software from a Western Digital drive?
If so youve got a serious issue of data loss (which is why you NEVER ever have a single external backup of data).
You can read all about it here on the last 20 pages:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5475136?start=1365&tstart=0
If you installed (which you should NEVER do) any HD control software, then youve got a serious issue where all your metadata is lost
Metadata is the data about the data on the HD, meaning not total loss, but almost the same as.

  • Why does time machine say my wireless hard drive doesn't have enough space when it clearly does?

I have a 2 TB western digital hard drive connected via USB to my airport extreme (Y2012) that i've been using the past 2 years to connect to wirelessly. The hard drive has 2 partitions, ~1 TB each. 1 partition for backing up, the other for storing media. Recently I deleted my macbook pro backup. My macbook pro has a 500GB hard drive, of which about 120 GB is free.
Since I deleted the old time machine backup disk image and told time machine to start a new backup, I am now receiving an error. It's telling me there isn't enough room on the drive, when the 1TB partition i'm trying to use (as i've sucessfully done in the past) has nothing on it. 1 full TB free, and my macbook pro can't backup a 500 GB hard drive, which isn't even full itself.
PLEASE HELP!! I have a macbook pro early 2011, and I never know when the board is going to go koput again and I don't currently have a backup of my stuff while this problem persists.
    Thanks!

  • Choosing what time machine backs up and what it doesn't

    Hey guys
Wondering if theres a way to prevent time machine from backing up certain folders.
Say my Downloads folder, it's used for temp files that are arranged elsewhere or deleted after use or installation and is cleared regularly.
However, time machine has backed it up for the past 4 months. I know i can delete all backups of this folder but is there a way to prevent it being backed up in future?

    AudioJihad wrote:
    Thank you.
Also is there a way to lock an old backup so it's never overwritten?
    No.
This is not covered in the FAQ. I would like to prevent my first back up from being overwritten or any changes such as "Delete all backups of..." from affecting it.
    Why?
If you're thinking that will delete backup copies of things that haven't changed since your first backup, it won't: the "magic" of Time Machine is that while it only backs-up what's changed since the previous backup, every backup is, in effect, a full one: a complete "snapshot" of the way your Mac looked at the time.
See [How Time Machine works its Magic|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Works.html] for an explanation.

  • Move time machine backups to new drive drobo

I have had nothing but trouble with my drobo 5d, and have decided to abandon it.
I would like to move my backups to a new disk, and have read Pondini's FAQ on doing this.
The problem with the drobo however, is that at random intervals it will disconnect.  Once it disconnects, it will not reconnect unless it is power cycled.
So far I've been unable even to get past the  'getting ready to copy 7 million files' stage.
Is finder clever enough that the hard directory link structure will be maintained if backups are copied one at a time?

Sigh.  Doesn't seem that you can copy individual backups.  Too bad.
However it makes sense.  Copying from one file system to another, the hard links would break.
