Droid2 data usage jumps from zip to 100's of MB a week

After seeing similar threads with sudden and unexplained data usage, I want to share my problem with one possible SOLUTION!
I was alerted that my account was going over the 150mb limit. I checked online my usage and saw nothing, the usual flat line at zero mb. I assumed it was another sales attempt to get me to up my data service. I rarely even use the internet on my phone (maybe price check at the store) as I always have a laptop or a customer’s fast internet available. BTW - I am an independent IT consultant, MCSE, Novell CNE, HP/Compaq Engineer, and COMPTIA Security Specialist. I admit the phone is a different monster for me. I get a bill with $30 extra charge and go back online (details) to see that my phone started "using" data at up to 144MB at a clip near the end of the billing cycle. I have the 150mb plan. Ouch!!! Now with the new billing cycle, I am on target to hit 3 GB and $400 plus monthly phone bill. I triple checked my settings. Everything is turned off, zero apps (except what came with the phone) are installed. I went to the local Verizon store. They said to turn on my wireless settings and up my data plan to 2 or 3 GB. What??? I don't use the data plan, it was required with that phone. The usage did decrease with wireless turned on, as it was using my clients Internet and my limited satellite (rural) internet. But my phone was still using over 300mg per month average. In the previous week it already racked up 750 mb, with 3 more weeks left on the billing cycle! I felt like I left my credit card in the Verizon 24 hour ATM machine!
SOLUTION: Last night, I went to a 3rd party Verizon store where they really try to gain your business (commission based?). Immediately the rep saw that the phone was using the internet and NOTHING was running. 3G was staying on. Phone was up to date, no apps running, nothing. A call to Verizon and 10 minutes later a hard reset (read lose any all not backed up settings) and the phone calmed down. The bogus data charges have seemed to go away overnight.
Was the phone defective? The software hosed? Why would Verizon not readily know about this symptom?
Question to Verizon: After reading tons of complaints from customers with similar complaints.....
Given that in the last 27 months of owning this phone and hardly ever using any data, and being a Verizon customer for 8 or more years.....Are you going to remove the excess data charges from my bill without a fight?

Answer: possibly, but you will have to contact CS. This is a peer-to-peer forum and you will not necessarily even hear from Verizon on these boards.

• Where is Data Usage coming from in Wi-Fi environment??

I'm using new iPhone. In less than 3 hours I accumulated some 1.8 MB of Data Usage, eventhough I'm on Wi-Fi network.
Any advice will be appreciated!

I don't understand what cross posting means. It's the first time I ever tried to ask a question. I only wanted to understand why my son's data is being used up when we have wifi. I guess I don't understand the whole process of trying to ask a simple question. I guess I'll have to just call verizon.

• What has gone wrong? Data usage went from 1/2 gigabyte for last 2 years to over 3gigabytes. I am not doing anything differently.

Data usage has increased dramatically.

How much data is reported for each app? Does it total 5.2 GB?
Also, check your usage with your carrier on their website.
In Settings go to iTunes & App Stores. Be sure use Cellular Data is off. And probably Automatic downloads also.

• Memory usage jumps from 3 to 5 GB in less than 24 hrs!

I have an iPhone 3GS with 8GB and iOS 5.1.1
Practical available memory is usually 6+GB
Yesterday, when I last backed up, my memory was about half full, a combination of music (0.9GB), photos (0.16GB) and apps (1.4GB).
Just now, not even 24 hrs later, I see my memory usage has jumped up to nearly 5GB, leaving only 1.57GB free. When I look in iTunes, the yellow "other" bar now accounts for 2.2GB but I know I did not add anything there.
The only new thing is that system settings notifies me it wants to install iOS6. I do not want to upgrade. Could it be that the phone downloaded the upgrade, even though I did not tell it to?
If it is not the new OS waiting to be installed, what could it possibly be? And how do I get rid of all that bloat?
Please advise, thanks in advance!

As much as it drives me nuts loosing memory to Other I've decided the best way for it not to be annoying is to never sync or update any software again, I'm very good at being an ostrich when I want to.
I backup my contacts with an iPhone app, all Gmail emails are store permanently on the Gmail server, any music I purchase is automatically backed up in iTunes and if my phone ever does crash and needs a restore I'll do it then, hopefully these things will be fixed at that stage.
Apart from the annoying Other Memory issue, and the battery problem with iOS5, the iPhone has been my most reliable and enjoyable phone to date and I've decided to just enjoy it as it is. I'll replace the phone in about a year when my plan finishes and, by then, most of these bugs should have been sorted out. If not, Samsung looks pretty good

• MIFI data usage is up to 9.61 GB in just two weeks

It appears my e-mail downloads are using up 10 GB. What can be done? I know I have far too many e-mails. Could you tell me how to transfer or delete these email so that they are not downloading each time I open up my e-mail account.

If you have an IMAP mail account, you do not have to download the whole file each time, instead select to only synchronize either xx emails or days.

If you have a gmail mail account, do not subscribe to see the 'All Mail' folder as it is gmails arhive of all of your emails, so that folder will double the size of your download.

• Phone data usage not matching verizon usage

Since having my droid turbo, my data usage in my setting has not been matching my usage on my verizon account and another line on my account is having the same issue, right now my phone says that i have used 0.56GB and verizon says i have used 1.03 which is a pretty big difference, the other line on my account that is having the same issue says he has used 0.69 verizon says he has used 2.421 which is a huge difference, i checked the wifi usage for both phones and it seems that the top the data app under wifi usage seem to be making up the difference between the usage in settings and the usage on verizon. I have also seen people online talking about this similar issue which seems to be caused by the phone using mobile data while connected to wifi. I have been with verizon for over 2 yrs and this is the first phone i have noticed this issue with. I have also attached screen shots from my phone to prove this issue. Any help with this problem would be appreciated.

If you want to see the report from VZW on your current data usage then you must sign into the VZW website and access your account. Only the VZW website will allow you to see any kind of information on your data usage. The Jetpack itself does not have any data usage metrics installed on it.
I assume that you already know that the data usage report from VZW is only a summary of your actual usage in terms of various sessions. The most information that will be disclosed to you are these sessions, their timestamps and how much data was consumed during that session. If you want the actual statistics for what was consumed then you must setup and maintain your own data usage monitor.

• MIFI451 data usage

Just bought this device last Sunday and Verizon says I have used over 3G's of my 5g allowance. Anyone else have this problem? I have not streamed any video or radio. I have left device on but was told by Verizon to shut it off when not in use and it is using data when I am not on computer. No DSL is available in my area and I have an autistic son who uses the computer after school and on weekends. I have been on the computer for most of the day. I don't understand how I could have used 3.142G in 5 days. HELP!!! At this rate my internet bill will be out of this world.

Hello,
You can request a Data Usage report from Verizon to help you isolate when the problem is happening. Verizon should be able to tell you the time of day and the ammount of data consumed at each interval. There may be a way to look it up through your My Verizon Account if you set it up, but I dont have the steps for that process. Once you know when your data is being consumed you can start to isolate down the running applications which were running at that time and shut them down.
You mentioned that your son also used the computer after school and on the weekends. I hate to point out the obvious but are you sure you know how he is consuming your data plan while you are not watching him? He might be streaming a radio station or watching videos on youtube with out you knowing about it.
Verizon also has an 1-800 number which you can use to check your data plan on the fly. It is fully automated and updated about every 10-20 minutes.
Until you can isolate the problem I suggest turning off your MiFi. Verizon will not be sympathetic if you go over your plan and there is no limit to how much you can rack up in overcharges. I have read forum threads before where the device was defective and was replaced and reimbursed by Verizon, but I wouldnt count on it happening for you until you know more.

• Serious unexplained data usages

I not sure what's going on but I keep getting my connection dropped and my data usages went from 4 percent to close if not 10 percent in several days and I even took my battery so I wouldn't go over my limit and it's still climbing. Also I can't sign in to the community. It says invalid but I've redone it so many times so I no its right.
PEGGY THOMPSON

What phone? Did you look to see what app is using data? Did you reboot the phone?
Each day is 3.3% of a month, so your trajectory would not be to run out of data if you are increasing from 4% to 10% over 2 days or more (4% + 3.3% + 3.3%= 10.6%)

• I have 2 significantly large data usages on my IPhone bill.

I received a text notice from ATT that I was over my monthly data allowance. My normal individual data usages range from 12kb to 25kb. Once in a while 600kb or so. The 2 that put me over were 131775kb and 88906kb. I have contacted ATT and they told me they just receive date, time and duration from Apple. I called Apple and they said there's no way to find out what caused these large usages. I need to find out what is causing these. I have had the phone for over a year and never had this problem until now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. FYI I do not use facebook or mail on my iphone. They are both turned off.

AT&T does NOT receive any info from Apple regarding their own network utilization. If that's what you were told, whoever said that is totally full of ****.
The ONLY way you'll find out when these data surges occured is from AT&T. There's no record of what the data was for, so you will have to correlate what you/the phone were doing at those times.

• Crio CPU usage jumping between 35% to 50% periodically

Hi gents,
I have a Crio 9024, in my RT application, I have 2 processing loops, the first one run each 200 ms and the second one is a dynamic event loop running each 3s. So the CPU usage jumps from 35% to 50% each 3s to process the event is't normal ??? this kind of app can be harmful for crio'CPU or not ?
Thanks

• Why is my data usage so high?

Using Verizon's data calculator, 5G should me more than sufficient for the limited PC usage. In one week, the data usage information indicates we have used over half in one week. There are several entries in the breakdown for small amounts during the midnight hours, when computers are not in use and shut down.
I am very disappointed with the information provided before this plan was purchased, based on what we expected for our data needs. By increasing the data amount our bill will increase 30.00 There are many sources that indicate 2G should be ample for each of us in the household (2). So, I am not sure the calculations are correct that are being tracked with the Jetpack system. Here is the data calculator, I entered more than twice the expected usage for the two laptops combined. We download no music, videos, movies. Simply check email and browse the web. How do you explain this?

5/21/2014 Data Calculator - Verizon Wireless

The VZW Data Calculator is a tool designed to help estimate and visualize data usage. Most folks have no idea what data is or how it is consumed on their devices. The data calculator tool is not accurate on any front other than to give you a general idea how much data a particular function consumes under normal circumstances.
VZW provides its users with a limited data usage report that does not break down individual application or device usage into meaningful results. What you get instead is a power bill like summary of your usage in terms of how much was used at certain times of the day. After all VZW is not in the computer support business, they provide you with the pipe and users determine how best to consume the data. A leaky hose or application is not the responsibility of VZW to discover and correct.
When it comes to the actual usage of your VZW device there isn't a whole lot out there that can show you how you are consuming your data plan. Some monitor applications and devices can be setup ahead of time, but all they are good for is reviewing the data that flows through them. Special care must be taken when designing and setting up monitors to make sure you capture everything. Monitors are generally not user friendly to setup or understand and often require detailed readings of numerous logs to determine where problems are, if the monitor can even capture them at all.
The current best practices for data usage are as follows:
1. Power down your VZW device when it is not being used
2. Secure your VZW device with a custom SSID, WiFi and Admin password
- This should be in compliance with security best practices for strong passwords
- A good site to reference is https://howsecureismypassword.net/
3. Take care to disable and shutdown any automatic updates on your devices
4. Be cautious to view and download audio/video content on low resolution
In most cases high data usage is not an intentional doing on the users behalf. It is the background applications and services installed on the connected devices that run rampant and chew up your data plan without your knowledge or consent.

• My CPU usage jumps to 100 % when I use iTunes 10.6.1 -using Windows XP Service Pack 3

When I open itunes 10.6.1 my CPU usage jumps to 100%. it started doing this about 6 months ago when I updated itunes.

This helped me. You should try it. Now I can run itunes or Safari and my CPU usage is around 22%.
Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

• Data usage when streaming from iTunes library to Apple TV?

I'm trying to manage my GB data usage through my ISP and was curious if, while streaming between my iTunes library and Apple TV television shows I have previously downloaded, is that using any data whatsoever? I know I used data to actually download the show initially, but once its just sitting in my library, and I call it up from my Apple TV later and start playing it, is there data usage going on? Thanks!

Home sharing and AirPlay don't use any data, they are done over the local network. It will then depend on the source. If any content in your iTunes library has a cloud icon then it will be streamed, if it resides on your hard drive then there is no internet connection required apart from iTunes purchases (pinging server for verification)

To reduce data usage, you should put iPad on Aeroplane Mode to stop all background activities when not using iPad.
