Drop command takes time
Dear All,
I am using Oracle 9.2.0.3.0 database server. I have just issue the drop command as following:
SQL> drop table bss.lookup;
and I am waiting since 1 hour for the result and there is no response. Can anyone tell me what is the issue?
Thanks in Advance
Hashim

Drop Command taking considerable time!!!
Hi guys,
In the morning i had asked u alll about Truncate command taking time.
I used "Truncate <table> reuse storage" for truncating the table. It worked fine.
Now, when i'am dropping that same table due to some change in our plan, this is also taking considerable amount of time...
FYI,
The tablespace is Dictionary Managed Tablespace and the Oracle Version for this is 9.2.0.8.
Can somebody help...
Regards,
Nick.

Hi
1. Note 68836.1 spells out a method to do this. Basically, it involves
a) truncate table reuse storage.
b) Then releasing extents slowly spreading it over many nights.
Night 1:
SQL> ALTER TABLE BIGTAB DEALLOCATE UNUSED KEEP 1707M; (2Gb*5/6)
Night 2:
SQL> ALTER TABLE BIGTAB DEALLOCATE UNUSED KEEP 1365M; (2Gb*4/6)
Night 3:
SQL> ALTER TABLE BIGTAB DEALLOCATE UNUSED KEEP 1024M; (2Gb*3/6)
But, you are out of luck. Since you have already started dropping the table, if you interrupt it, smon needs to cleanup. That might take longer time.
2. Another option, need to be planned better, is to convert Dictionary managed to locally managed tablespaces first and then drop the table. I never tested this method, but giving you an option.
dbms_space_admin.tablespace_migrate_to_local call can be used to convert from dictionary to locally managed tablespace.
Cheers

Oracle Drop command taking more time in AIX When compared to Windows
Hi
We are firing a normal Drop command on our database and the databse version is 10.2.0.4.The catabase is running on AIX v5.The command is taking more time than usual .
There are no waits on session.Let me try to put the scenario in more simple terms.I have a nested table NT_TEST with record count 0 and i am dropping the statement using "Drop table NT_TEST" in windows it is getting dropped say some 218 Milli seconds.
The same table when i am dropping it in AIX it is taking around 6 seconds.
There are no locks ,Flashback is off,Triggers are not involved.Drop is not waiting on any transaction to complete.
Could anybody help me out on this.Quite possible. On most Unixes asynchronous I/O requires purchasing extra options, and most sites just purchase the default O/S. Or asynchronous I/O is not enabled by default or the database is located on an ufs file system.
You provided no info at all on your AIX configuration. AIX does have asynchronous I/O, it is not always enabled, and the number of slaves is usually way too low.
As root, run smit aio and report the results.
At his point your unfavorable comparison of Windows and AIX is quite unfair. Unix doesn't run out of the box.
You know that famous joke 'If operating systems were airplanes'?
In that joke, the Unix airplane is assembled on the spot, but the Windows airplane is three months late.

It takes time before the system is working properly
Hi,
This morning something strange happened.
Turn on the iMac, the chime is there but when using the audio control keys (F4-F15-F16), nothing happened.
Trying to quit an application (like iMail) from the dock does not work either.
The icon in the dock shows the selected view but the options above the icon are not shown.
For your info: the audio is working when using iTunes.
But after waiting for a few minutes, the system is back to normal: the options above the iMail icon are shown and the audio control window is shown as well.
For some reason, the system needs a few minutes to get back to normal.
It performs the selected actions but they are delayed.
Additional information:
- The permissions are o.k.
- No external DVD writer or hard disk has been connected
- USB connected equipment: EyeTV, cardreader
I have rebooted, restarted the systems a few times and it goes wrong in most of the cases.
Here is the system log for a case where it goes wrong.
Anyone?

It looks like that message comes immediately after you tell it to restart, so it's not related to your problem. I see those same lines in my log, anyway. The actual reboot comes with the next line, at 12:39:00...
As for the slowdown, do you have an external file share turned on that mounts at startup? I see a mention of an SMB mount called "NTFS" in your log. That can slow things down a lot, especially if it's not available.
Also, things are a bit slower right after a reboot. For example, when you launch a program for the first time after a reboot, it takes quite a bit longer. But once it's been launched once, it'll launch much faster after that. Also, lots of things are going on in the background, even once the Finder desktop comes up. If you have a lot of applications listed in "Login Items" in your "Accounts" preferences, those take time (and more important, CPU time) to start up, too.
Also, see if things speed up if you remove the EyeTV and card reader. Maybe they're starting a process that's taking a lot of CPU time...

While downloading the free trial for Final Cut Pro X my internet has dropped out many times. It does however seem to continue ok each time it reconnects. Will this affect the software when it finishes? Is this a problem? Any advice please?
This has happened to me with a few downloads without any upsets.
You should be OK.
As I recall the download is around 1.2 gig so it takes a bit of time and effort to get it to your system.

Dropped commands via ethernet connection
Hello,
I seem to have commands dropped whenever I use ethernet connections as opposed to GPIB or RS232. I do not know if it is due to timing but depending on the instrument the more frequent the dropped commands occur. If I highlight the execution, I see the data flow as expected and commands. I have tried placing timeouts before and after/delays in between commands, even *OPC, to make sure the operation is complete before moving on to the next command.
This question is very general for very specific pieces of instruments but I am convinced it is due to the ethernet connection and my understanding of the timing of commands.
Thanks,
ChristianSome instruments just need time to process commands before they can accept any more. The Ethernet tends to send data faster, but also has a higher latency. You could be running into this latency issue. In general, you should have waits between commands just for allowing the instrument to process it, regardless of the communication bus.
There are only two ways to tell somebody thanks: Kudos and Marked Solutions -
WMS dropping rules execution time.
Hi Community!
We're facing problem in our OEBS 12.1.3 production environment with dropping rules execution time.
Execution can take a long time (10-15 minutes) if it started from standart interface by warehouse worker, but from the other side same query executes in few seconds in sqlplus.
I'll be very grateful if someone helps me to find problem source.
Kind regards.Well, these rules are not unique – most of them are executed repeatedly for various Entities. In whole, it is a big budget calculation model.
It surely can be and must be optimized, but it will take some time (I started to administrate this outsource-developed Planning system not long ago).
But the question now is not in the amount of BRs, but in the execution delay.
I tried to run a singe rule the same way, and got _18 sec in CmdLineLauncher vs 1 sec in EAS Console_.
Just can't get the delay reason... -

Windows 8 takes time to open explorer.
Windows 8 takes time to open explorer (My Computer), found that if the network drive group policy is removed it opens fast.
Please help to diagnose the issue.Hi,
According to your description, if this is related with mapped drive, it might be inaccessable network drives, I suggest you check the network connection between the PCs. Explorer may struggle if there is a problem with the other computers or with
the network.
Or as
britishdhez mentioned, check if a 3rd party program is the culprit.
