Drop Run timecode wont capture completely

I am using an XH-A1 in HDV format. We shot on two cameras, and synced manually with Drop Run timecode so the timecode will be redundant throughout shooting, making it easier to line up clips for multicam. I am trying to capture the HDV footage, and whenever it hits a timecode break it brings up a "searching for footage" message. Is there anything I can do so it doesent cut off that first 10 seconds of every clip?
Thanks,
Collins

Yeah, use capture now instead at each cut point... Stop each capture each time the camera pauses, and go again. Will take some practice, but can be done once you see how long it takes after you start the Capture now routine for it to really start recording. HDV is extra fussy doing this because it's an MPEG stream... Has to start on an i frame I'm guessing. Also I think you must be talking about "free run" TC... never heard of drop run code. There's drop frame code though...

  • Free run timecode - batch capturing

Hi, In FCP I'm trying to capture a whole tape shot with free run timecode and several breaks. I've set On timecode break to 'make a new clip' in preferences/general. When I click 'capture now' it captures the first clip then goes into an eternal loop trying to capture the second. What am I missing?

Free run code has it's uses, don't hate it, just hate it when it's used where it doesn't belong.
For example with the DVX and/or hvx, if you are shooting, for example, a concert with a bunch of cameras, that all have to be moving around and not able to be tethered to a single code source, if you put all the cameras in a little pile and, using ONE remote, preset a code and throw them all into free-run, then they're all locked together. Just fire them up and shoot. Tape and card changes are a snap and fast too, and when it's time to make your multiclips, they fall right into place.
Another good use is two or three camera big long corporate meetings, where the beloved clients drone on for hours.
But some ninny doing a run and gun with free run is just begging for someone to do him serious bodily harm.

  • Batch capturing free run timecode.

    Hi,
I have just been through and logged 3 hour tape which was recorded on free run timecode. I have just tried to batch capture it all and it isnt working because of the timecode discontinuity.
Is their a way I can override this? Any help would be appreciated as this is a nightmare for me.
    Thanks very much,
    Simon.

Won't recording in capture now make each timecode break it's own clip?
Yes. As it should be. If it didn't, then the timecode would be right for the first clip, but then all the others, the timecode would be wrong.
Or is there a way to set it up so that it makes it one clip?
Yes...if you turn off deck control. Switch it to UNCONTROLLABLE DEVICE. But then you lose any and ALL reference to timecode, and timecode is GOLD to an editor. Why? Because if the drive with the media dies, all you need to do is recapture the footage and your edit will be rebuilt. Or, if you deleted the media and needed to recapture it at a later date, then you could. If you capture with NO reference timecode, and you lose the media....your edit is gone, and you'll have to rebuild the cut from scratch.
But, do that if you want. Just know what the consequences might be.

  • Working with Free-Run Timecode

We have a multi-camera event coming up which will consist of 3-4 cameras. There is downtime between each segment that we are covering and I'd like to set each camera to free-run timecode so I can synch them in post. The Free run will be manually set on each camera so they won't be in perfect sync.
Once each event starts, the cameras will start rolling and roll continuously through the event and then stop and wait until the next event.
However, I know that FCP is slow in capuring footage with TC Breaks. Is this the best way to do this, or is there a better way? it looks like I'll be manually syncing anyway, but the TC's will at least get me in the ballpark. We're expecting 12-15 events, some of the cameras are lock down on particular items (clock, crowd, finish) so having a common synch image will be difficult.
    Thanks.

    Jake,
I don't know what kind of experience you have shooting events like this, but I'll relate some of my experiences for anyone who's interested.
Shooting live events with multiple cameras can be a lot of fun, but many times things have fallen apart for me once the event gets rolling and there's an intense pressure to not miss any of the action, even if it meant forgoing steps that would have helped me later. Preparation was key, or I'd be cursing myself in post. I've repeatedly found that there's no such thing as too much set-up time.
In the past I've used a cable to send free-run time-code from a master camera to a slave camera, but once the cable is disconnected the cameras always drift out of sync. You've stated that you're only using it to get in the ballpark though, so it should serve that purpose reasonable well. I've done a lot of multi-cam event shooting that required extensive post production and the thing that killed me was cameras shutting off and turning on at different times. Try to synchronize your shooting as much as humanly possible and you will be MUCH better off in post. TRUST ME on this! The on's and off's don't have to happen simultaneously, but the more consistent they are (and there less there are of them) the less confusion there will be in post. If a camera has to be turned off unscheduled to change the battery or something, have the shooter shoot into his hand for a few seconds after re-starting it to leave a nice visual cue of the edit point. (Also, don't wait as long as I did to learn about FCP's DV Start/Stop Detect feature!) I should add that I didn't have any problems working with free-run footage in FCP, but it depends a lot on your workflow goals and how you choose to capture it.
Also, I find that the most accurate way to synchronize video tracks in these messy situations is often by listening to their associated audio (even when using a wireless I try to always use one channel for the onboard mic)--unless you use a clapboard consistently it can be much easier to hear when audio is a frame out of sync than by looking at a visual cue in different footage from different angles (assuming the sound is reaching each camera at roughly the same time).
Part of my preparation for these events involved developing a pattern by which the event would be edited, and sticking with it. Most events involve some sort of activity which repeats, and I learned to shoot with each cycle's edit pattern in mind. I'm the first to encourage editing creativity and variation, but there have been so many times where I wished I had shot with a clearly-defined edit pattern in mind as opposed to chasing after creative shots that I then had to struggle mightily to even make use of in post.
I also learned to ensure that each shooter has a clearly-defined role. When everyone would swing around wildly trying to catch whatever eye-catching thing happened next, I'd end up with 4 identical wildly-swinging shots! Also, having one shooter assigned to cover the whole event with only a very smooth, very wide, "as-if-this-is-getting-broadcast-live-right-now" shot will save your butt many times over in post.
Another thing--you can never have too many cut-aways. If you think about it, if you come back with 60 different wildcard shots, and you're producing a 1-hour program, that only leaves you with one cut-away per minute! These are easy to get if there is a crowd involved by moving from person to person and rolling for about 10 seconds on each, but they have to be recorded while an actual event is taking place. When I would try to grab my crowd shots during downtime, it resulted in cut-aways that made it seem like the audience was entirely uninterested in the event taking place. Another thing I never seemed to have enough of were crowd reaction shots, like applause and laughter, because often all of us shooters were too busy frantically zooming in on the bucking bronco or the rodeo clown.
Didn't mean for this to get so long, but post-producing live events can be a real beast and I made a whole lot of mistakes before finally starting to get the hang of it. These days, I think recording live-to-tape with a field switcher is the only way to go, but that's just not always practical.
    Good luck!

  • Fcp changing timecode upon capture

i'm capturing dvcpro hd 720p 59.94 clips into my project using a panasonic AJ-HD1200 deck. the tapes are drop frame according to the deck. fcp plays and logs the clips as drop frame yet after i capture them they show up in the bin as non-drop frame with the timecode offset to account for that difference. why would fcp convert these clips to non-drop frame? thanks.

    capturing at 59.94.
timecode was not generated by a camera. it was a 6-camera shoot that was recorded onto a rackful of panasonic aj-hd1200's.
i'm trying trying to find out why there's a mismatch in the code. like i said the deck and the capture tool both indicate that it's drop frame. however once it's been captured, the timecode of the clip stored in the bin is now non-drop frame and is different than the mark in & out codes originally marked by the capture. for example an in-point of 13:28:24;01 in the capture tool (also in the bin when it's been logged) becomes 13:27:35:15 after it's been captured.
i'm wondering if there's some mysterious setting somewhere that would this to happen that i'm overlooking. as far as i'm concerned everything should be transparent in this regard.

  • Drop Frame detected on Capture

I am using FCP 5.04, I am capturing through a Sony DSR-80 using AJA IO LA, my connections are RGB I get video into FCP during preview. When I go to capture I get about 1 second of video then a error message that says "Drop frame detected on capture" then it freezes. I have a G5 4 gigs of ram. plenty of hard drive space. I am running Tiger OS. is there a setting that I can adjust, does anyone know what causes this? has anyone had this problem and solved it?

Your drive is likely too slow or too busy to capture the codec you have specified.
    Two possible fixes:
    1. Change the capture codec to something less demanding – DV 48K perhaps.
    2. Set your scratch disc to something faster. Also capturing to the drive you are using to run the OS and the App is not recommended, though it will often work.

  • Zero timecode after capture

I'm having issues with sporadic zeroing out of timecode after capture. I have two identical systems running FCP 5.1.2 and capturing with AJA Kona 3 cards running version 3.2. All of the capture presets are identical.
The process that I've been using on both systems have been as follows:
    Creating a new project
Importing an XML into the project
Batch capture from the Kona card as 1080psf 23.98 DVCPro HD
The odd thing is that one system (only one of the two) sporadically zeros out the preset captured timecode for the entire XML, thusly changing a logged clip that was set to start at 13:21:14:05 and forcing it to start at 00:00:00:00. The duration of the clip remains a constant. A usual fix for this is making the captured clips offline, trashing the FCP preferences, restarting FCP and rebatching. That usually fixes it for a few days, but inevitably returns to the same old problem. I've also tried reinstalling FCP, but that hasn’t resolved it. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks for your help!

So, is there a way to get FCP to display Zero-Based
timecode for an individual clip? Or to get After
Effects to read the timecode embedded with the clip?
    No and no.
    Have you looked at this?

  • How to use FCP with tapes that have free run timecode

i have a bunch of tapes the were shot with 4 x Sony HDV-Z1P cameras. the timecode was set to free run in the cameras and all the cameras were synced by resetting the timecode on all the cameras at the same time. and on each tape the cameraman has buttoned on and off probably 8 times a tape or so which means on free run timecode that there is timecode breaks on the tapes,
can anyone tell me the right setting i should be using in FCP so that i can capture the tapes easily (prefer to capture a whole tape in one go) and with the timecode from the tapes, so that the TC shows the jumps when the camera was not recording.
i tried capture now and setting the user preference to ' on TC break, warn after capture. but it captured without the gaps in the timecode, so when the cameraman buttons off-the captured timecode is still continous. and this means i loss matching the tc between the cameras

you need to set it to Make New Clip, no other setting will give you correct timecode for all clips ... you cannot capture accross timecode breaks and have the timecode jump to reflect those breaks. nle software does not work this way.
once you have captured your media (4 x the number of clips per reel) then you can select them all and choose Modify > Make Multicip Sequence

  • T400 with ATI Radeon HD 3400. Driver not found after running ImageX.exe /Capture

    Hello,
I was able to reproduce the following problem on a T400.
    - unattended installation of WXP-SP3 (slipstreamed)
    - reboot
    - install latest ATI driver from Lenovo/IBM site (8.503.2.2-080818a-069536C)
    - reboot
At this point, the video driver is well configured.
    - Reboot once or twice, video driver still good.
    - Boot the T400 on WinPE 2.0
    - Capture the C:\ to a network file share using ImageX.exe (from Microsoft's WAIK 1.1)
    - Shutdown the T400, and reboot on C:\
    - At this point, video driver is "lost". The Hardware Wizard says "new driver found", but stick with default VGA.
Then I get an ATI error telling the driver is missing or not well installed.
    - When rebooting several times, suddenly the card is back in the device manager as a Radeon HD 3400.
    (without re-installing the driver ...)
    Anyone has an explanation ?
Please not I did not run "sysprep.exe" before capturing with ImageX.exe
    stefan

    Update on this problem.
After running "sysprep.exe -mini -quiet -reseal -shutdown", I ran the "ImageX.exe /capture".
After rebooting the T400, the ATI driver was fine.
Either is a coincidence (but I could repeat it 3 times...) or it is not advised to run "ImageX.exe /Capture" on a non-syspreped Windows XP.
I know that a non-syspreped Vista system has a limitation if captured with ImageX.exe. But I am not aware on any limitation with XP.

  • Carriage returns causes enclosed VBScript to run and fail to complete

I am finding a weird problem.
I have my autosequence file working perfectly without any errors but the same VBscript file when enclosed runs and fails to complete I am unable to figure what is wrong.
I am using vbCRLF to read/write from INI files into the script files. Other than this I dont use any cariage returns. When Iopen my Script files in other editors like Notepad etc, I am able to find a small square kind of a character. Is there some unseen Carriage Returns (CRs) or Line Feeds (LFs) or some combination due to which I am facing this.
    (I am using DIAdem 9)
Can anyone please help me out with this immediately.
    Thanks in advance,
    Wating for your quick response.

Hello, I'm searching through the Diadem Forum and I didn't find something that I could use.
I have to exchange text information between to programs (DIAdem and CatmanProfessional).
My initial idea is to create INI file to acomplish this. Catman has a function to read or write quite easily describing the SECTIONS and KEYS of this INI file.
However I can't see something on Diadem Script. It onlys read or write Text files... And then I must extract the key values cutting and finding one by one.
I saw that Labview has an open VI to treat this, is there nothing similar for DIAdem?

  • What's the deal with Drop-Frame / Non-Drop-Frame Timecode?

    I'm having trouble with 30fps Drop-Frame and 30fps Non-Drop-Frame timecode formats! I thought 29.97fps means 30fps Drop-Frame, but now I'm all confused.
I'm working with DSLR footage filmed with a frame rate of 29.97. For example, this one clip is listed as (in Project panel)
    Media Start: 11:16:11:23
    Media End: 11:22:42:22
    Duration: 00:06:31:00
    Frame Rate: 29.97fps
If I open this clip directly in Source Monitor, the timecode display (yellow, on lower left corner) says 11:16:11:23 at the beginning and 11:22:42:23 at the end. OK. But if I right-click on the timecode display, the pop-up indicates "Non-Drop-Frame"(!!). If I manually change that to "Drop-Frame", the start and end timecode would become 11:16:52:11 and 11:23:23:23, and the duration display (white, on lower right corner) becomes 6:31:12.
Now I create a new sequence of 1080p30, which has a 29.97fps time base. I right-click the yellow timecode display on the upper left corner of the Timeline, it says "30fps Drop-Frame". I drag the said clip onto the sequence. It occupies a length of 6:31:12. If I double-click the clip to open it in Source Monitor, now the Source Monitor timecode display indicates "Drop-Frame", and the start/end timecodes are 11:16:52:11 and 11:23:23:23. Huh??
Now I apply the "Timecode" effect on the clip. The timecode burn-in says 11:16:51:11 at the first frame and 11:23:23:22 at the last frame. I then go to the Effect Controls tab and look at the Timecode effect. It says
    Format: SMPTE
    Timecode Source: Media
    Time Display: 30 Drop Frame
Just playing around, I switch "Timecode Source" to "Clip" - now the timecode burn-in goes from 00:00:00:00 to 00:06:31:11 - and then I switch it back to "Media". Now the Effect Controls tab says:
    Format: SMPTE
    Timecode Source: Media
    Time Display: 30 Non-Drop Frame
And the timecode burn-in says 11:16:11:23 at the first frame and 11:22:42:22 at the last frame!
    HUH??
Just for kickers, I switch "Timecode Source" to "Clip" again... Now "Time Display" stays on "30 Non-Drop Frame", and the timecode burn-in goes from 00:00:00:00 to 00:06:30:29.
What's the REAL length of this clip? Is it drop-frame or non-drop-frame? What are the REAL timecodes for it?
Also in a general sense, since I can change the "Time Display" field in the Timecode effect at any time, and change the Timecode display format of the Timeline at any time... How do I avoid creating mismatching timecodes??
Thanks in advance for any clarification!!

So obviously, only one of them could be "correct" in terms of reflecting what actually happened. The other one is slightly sped-up or slowed-down. You might say "oh that's a tiny difference, it doesn't matter".
Zooropa75, just for matter of clarification I want to make sure you understand that no matter which you use, it won't actually speed up or slow down your video. TC, wether it is non-drop or drop, is only a counting system. For that reason, it doesn't even matter which you use to reference edits, so long as everyone editing uses the same TC basis.
If you want actual time accurate TC, as was already mentioned, use drop-frame.
I'm going to kill two birds here. The "drag clip to new sequence button" action I was referring to in my earlier post is dragging your clip to the icon seen below. It should create a timeline using your videos format.
Also, remember I recommended looking in the manuel for "actual" time used? You can see below a snapshot I took from your cameras manuel. You're not shooting in whole numbers for anything unless you're using the 50hz system and shooting at 50p. That is the ONLY exception. ...and this is good for everyone to remember. Very few US digital cameras shoot frames per second in whole numbers. If it says you're shooting in 24p, 30p, 60p, etc. ad nauseum, you can bet your biscuits it's actually the multi-decimal NTCS counterparts like you see below And that should be your final answer. *chuckle*

  • Sony GV-HD700 wont capture

No matter what combo of settings I use, I can not get Final Cut to capture HD footage off the Sony GV-HD700 deck. I have tried several coronations of setting on both the deck and FCP 6 and nothing works. Any ideas?

Yes on all three. I have set the capture preset to all the HDV settings I have, and have used the all the HDV firewire control settings, including the sony ones. It will control the deck, but it wont preview and when I hit capture now or set an in and out point, it wont capture. It says that there is no data. I have also unplugged the firewire and changed the iLink settings on the deck. Neither on or off work. I have also changed the HDV settings to Auto and HDV and nothing.

  • Drop Frame vs. Non Drop Frame Timecode in DVDSP3

The manual is rather spare in its discussion of the issue of timecode, but it does say that the first video asset determines whether the timecode in DVDSP is drop frame or non drop frame.
Question 1: Does this refer to the first video asset in the V1 track or the first video asset imported into the project?
Question 2: If video is encoded using Compressor prior to import into DVDSP, is the choice of drop frame or non drop frame set by Compressor, or does it automatically use the timecode inherent in the original video?
Question 3: Does the DVD spec require a particular timecode (or is either acceptable)? In other words, will DVDSP convert non drop frame video assets to drop frame (or vice versa) during the build process in order to conform to spec?
I am having timecode issues and I am trying to narrow down the culprit. It can be either FCP, Compressor or DVDSP, or some combination of the three. Since my timeline in DVDSP has a semicolon separator between the minute and second values, I am assuming DVDSP is operating using drop frame timecode.
How can I confirm the timecode of my video assets? Is there a way to get this information? I tried opening the video in QT and viewing properties but I could not find the info. QT does not seem to display frames so I cannot check the separator to see if it is a semicolon or not.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

In the browser in Final Cut it will tell you all the information regarding your video assets or clips.
DVDSP lets you pick what time code you want in encode window and will conform your clips accordingly.
May I ask what kind of timecode issues you are having?
