Drop shadow flipping direction on it's own...?!

Applying a drop shadow effect to a linked raster image with transparency. This has always worked without problems. Today however in CC it apparently likes to flip it's direction on it's own. Take a look at this screenshot to see what I mean. Here's the play by play. 1)apply ds effect to object at p1 p1 p3 75%.  2)Looks good, hit apply  3)move on to next item to do...  4) notice ds has changed on it's own 5)re-open effects ... numbers are still right but appearance is wrong. 5) screenshot and try the forums for a explanation :/
anyone know what gives?
edit: Apparently this is a bug in indesign ('s draw code?). When export it is in the proper location. Very inconvenient...  as an aside...IND CC is so much buggier than any IND i've seen since 1.0... grrrr angry face* this is getting tiresome chasing bugs down constantly.

Is that shadow correct, or incorrect?

  • How can I add drop shadow to a vehicle that changes direction ?

    Hi,
    Flash CS5
Is it possible to add drop shadow to plan views of vehicles (vehicles are png images as MovieClips) such that as the vehicles change direction along roads (also png images) the shadow is always cast to north west ot the vehicle ? Buildings in the base png image have shadows but vehicles also need them so as to belong to the scene and not appear false.
    How is it done ?
Is there control over opacity and softness ?
If I were to have plan views of humans walking would the shadows follow the leg movements ?

you can control the dropshadow's angle property dynamically.  and, yes the dropshadowfilter has an alpha and strength properties you can use.
use the help files to see all the properties you can use.

  • Drop Shadow renders in opposite direction!

Added drop shadow to a clip. Direction is lower right (315 degrees). Looks right on screen. Export video. Drop shadow is to the upper left! Tried the drop shadow on both the individual item and on the group. Same results both ways. Move my drop shadow to the upper left in the project - exported movie has it to the lower right. Bizarre!

Most NLE's use straight alpha. I have never rendered pre-multiplied except to demonstrate to students that they don't work well in most situations. I always edit my output module templates to get rid of the pre-multiplied settings. I never have figured out why they were the default.

  • Drop shadow in all directions?

I would like to make a drop shadow in all directions.. In the drop shadow dialog you can only make one in two directions, say south and east....
I have also tried copying the layer and making the ds in the opposite direction... but I would have to do a lot of work so the layer on the bottom would not be obscured...
isn't there an easier way to do this...
Please Respond.. thank you for your help.

  • Fixing Drop Shadow, create its own lines

Hi everyone, Been playing with illustrator all day and its been a blast. Im trying to put a drop shadow on this, however, theres a huge line that I can seem to get rid of that cuts through from the M to the F. (please refer to the pic). I know its not an anchor point or anything, but how the hell do i get rid of this? its driving me nuts! THANKS!
    -Jonny

it looks like the MF is formed of a single open path and that path has a white fill. if a path is open, the fill will just cut straight between the endpoints of the path. select it and give it a fill of 'none' (the red slash box below the stroke/fill tools). since that's also the fill on the bottom of the F, you'll see through that too.

  • Drop shadow blur issue

Hi, we have come across an issue using Illustrator drop shadows with a large blur. What seems to happen is that Illustrator expands the box size and after fading the shadow to nothing it seems to fade back to the colour. To try create a box with a colour fill, add a drop shadow with any colour other than black with about a 7mm offset and a blur of over 10mm

I see the problem for one thing when yo give the feather a large setting it extends beyond the the shape that it is generated by so it is actually expanding beyond what a pears to be a clipping path that is totally invisible as well as extending to the opposite direction of the direction of the offset.
You can draw a shape that can mask the edges showing and make a clipping mask.
You can also make your own shadow which might prove to be a better option with a feathered copy of the objects shape and filling that with the color you want you can give it quite a feather if you desired.
The reason that might be better is that you can use a spot color which does not seem to be supported in drop shadows but is supported in feathered shapes.
This is puzzling as I swear I read somewhere this was fixed?
This is what a drop shadow looks like when created with a feathered rectangle of course you have more control this way as you can resize the shadow to give it a more realistic feel as a shadow would be larger then the original shape.
So the way they should fix this is to also have a setting for the clip as well as a setting for the size of the shadow or if the wish distance from object calculation.
So the feather technique also gives you the option of adjusting the placement of the shadow in a manually tactile manner. You should probably group the two once you finished or make it a symbol as Mordy points t making these types of object symbols are useful
and can come in handy especially if youy want to export to Flash at sometime in the future.
Anyway I am going to add these ideas to my feature request for cast shadows and other enhamcements to the shadow effect.
You can all do so as well.

  • Rotating drop shadow

okay, so i have a ring made up of 10 balls - sort of like a
clock - and i've made them spin one way, then in the other
direction. i want to create a realistic drop shadow that obv
animates along with the ring, but when i skew the shadow and then
animate it to rotate, the whole shape moves in a funky way. instead
of looking like the cast shadows of the individual balls in the
ring, it looks more like a second, skewed clog doing it's own
thang. i've tried motion tweening first, then skewing, and vice
versa - with the same results. i'm a newb to flash, and my luck
with motion guides has not been good. when i try breaking up the
balls into 10 individual layers and making them rotate around a
circular path, i get some error message saying i can't animate
ungrouped or multiple symbol layers or something weird like that.
i've watched a couple motion guide tutorials, but i still can't
apply it to the project i'm working on now. anyone have a spare 5
mins to tell me how to do this? i will love you forever.

I can't resist the offer of love forever, so here goes:
You might try this: turn your animating ball ring into a
single movie clip, by copying all layers and then pasting them into
a new blank movie clip. Then, on a blank stage, place one instance
    of that movie clip.
Now here's the tricky part: You must move the movie clip's
center point to the very bottom of the clip. Not the bottom of the
individual ball, but the lowest point that the ball goes to in its
rotation. Think of it as the point where your rotating ring touches
the ground. Click on the Free Transform tool and move that little
white circle down to the bottom.
Now copy that movie clip and paste it in place (aligned with
the first one), but on a new, lower, layer.
Now you can skew the bottom movie clip...as long as that
center point (which you moved to the bottom) does not move. Apply a
tint to it, or an alpha value (Color field in the Properties
panel). If you have Flash 8, you can also apply a Blur filter.
I just tried all this myself, based on your description. It
    works.

  • The drop shadow or even the type does not show up on the PDF created from SC3

I've created the legends on charts and the text on path and drop shadows are applied.
when I make a PDF, some text get dropped all together as well as the drop shadows do not show up.
Can someone help to solve this?
The only way is make a jpg. files and then create a separate PDF off the Acrobat.
It works but I would like to save the steps.
    Thanks!

    Hello markshepherd1,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
According to the following article, when you're going through the process of burning a playlist to a disc, you have the option to select "Include CD Text".
If you’re creating an audio CD, choose your options:
    Change the recording speed:
Choose an option from the Preferred Speed pop-up menu.
When you burn an audio CD, iTunes automatically uses the best recording speed for the CD. However, if your blank CD is rated for a slower speed than the maximum speed of your drive, or if you experience problems creating CDs, you may want to change the recording speed to match the CD’s rating.
Change the amount of silence between songs:
Choose an option from the Gap Between Songs pop-up menu.
Have all the songs on the disc play at the same volume:
    Select Use Sound Check.
Include information that disc players in some vehicles can display:
    Select Include CD Text.

  • Pages, printing: still problem with drop shadows . Frustrated.  :

    Hi -
I've spent most of the afternoon trying to get my Pages document to print properly.
I am experiencing the drop-shadow issue :heavy black clump instead of artfully placed& delicate. Printouts do not resemble what is onscreen or in preview etc.
Having read through the forums; the links; the (cruddy) Pages Help and manual; installed new HP offficejet all-in-one software...
I still get the same result.
Most of the threads don't quite fit my situation.
For instance: Several comments have to do with older versions of things. Because I do have Pages 2, I am on Tiger OS X10.4.7 , upgrading is not my problem.
One of the threads had fairly explicit directions to make a new filter in Coloursync which led all the way to a "change resolution" menu but didn't offer advice on what resolution
    modification to make. rrrrrrrr..
I am pretty lost at this point and really just want to print out a document that looks like what I have designed.
    What? How? Help! Please?

tried to print directly from Pages
If printing directly from Pages does not work then it must be an aspect of your printer. Some printers have a black and white setting that might not read shadows (which are more like greyscale) With the doc opened press ⌘ +p and browse through the options of the printer's pulldown menu and see if there are any settings that might be incorrect. (Check, in particular, your 'color sync' and 'print settings' options in the pull down menu.)

  • Having a strange problem with Drop Shadows in Ai CS5

    Hi there Adobe experts!
I have tried eveything... this is my first post here, but it's my only hope. I have a project where I apply drop shadows to linked images to give a sense of depth. A few days ago, the drop shadows just stopped feathering. It doesn't matter what the blur is set to, its just one colour. Transparency still applies. Here's the kicker...I can open files with applied drop shadows to them and they look fine. But if I try to edit that existing shadow, even by 0.0001 of a pt, it will lose its feathering.
I've deleted the AiPrefs file, and played with just about every setting in document raster effects settings. I have no clue what would cause this.
Oh, and whatever the issue is, it starts in my computer, and then attaches to the files... I sent the ai file to a friend, and when he tried to add drop shadows, they screwed up on his machine too. But it isn't the file. I've attached a brand new (and CMYK, just to see if that would make a difference...) file of a sphere showing the problem. Even with the blur super high, the shadow remains flat and monochromatic.
Any geniuses seen this before or have a remote clue how to solve this one?
    Thanks in advance,
    Luke

All my ram is tripple channel DDR3, same clock speeds, but some is 2GB and some is 4GB.
I just pulled the 2GB sticks (which I had in originally) and left in the 4GB sticks (the ones I recently purchased) and the problem goes away. It's quite odd, I've never had a problem like this before with any other application. I know it's not the best thing in the world to have different types of RAM installed, but my motherboard supports it and I've never had a problem doing it before.
I would be interested to see if this problem is reproducable in the OP's senario, or if this problem can be reproduced by others.
Conclusion: the 2GB sticks work on their own, and the 4GB sticks work on their own. I definitly would not call this a hardware problem, it's an adobe problem and they need to fix their software.

  • PP CS6 Title Safe Motion Automatic Drop Shadow - WHY and how do I turn it off?

    Hello all.
I'm new to Premiere (one week) after years on Avid. So go easy on me.
I've created a title that I've added some motion to (basic stuff, just moved the position/added some directional blur so that the camera pan matches the title movement). The moment the edge of the title frame enters the screen a drop shadow appears - but only if there's motion (see attached picture).
At first I thought it wouldn't show up on export- but it did. I'm sure it was placed there by programmers as some kind of marker, or edge warning, but why in the world can't I find a place to shut it off? I tried everything, watched about 2 hours worth of adobe TV, youtube, vimeo tutorials, read forums, the software's help section, etc. Had a chat conversation with an adobe rep in India and he suggested I animate using title crawl - in the end he didn't know how to turn the shadow off. I could always go to AE, but why should I have to do this for something so basic? Is there ANY way to shut this feature off (considering how customizable everything that adobe makes tends to be)? Or do I have to bite the bullet and create a Matte to over the shadow (silly considering it wasn't my creative choice).
PS: If I stack video on top of video the same shadow does not appear, even if I add motion to it - so this is a title only problem.
PPS: Yes, I could zoom into the frame to avoid the shadow (and if there is no answer or solution to my question I will do that) but why should there be a permanent shadow on a Title frame that already has several safety markers - including a while edge around the frame???? Or furthermore, why should we be limited to work inside a frame???
    Thank you for your help/time.

It's locked and I'm unable to toggle it, but it seems like that is the current setting. It still shows the shadow.

  • Indd 5.5: When using drop shadow or lower opacity in object, I lose fills

I have ugraded to InDesign 5.5 (v. 7.5) for Mac OS. Here is my problem: If I have object "A" with transparency (lower than 100% opacity) or a drop shadow (which also uses a transparency) overlapping object "B", then "B" loses it fill when printing to a Xerox Phaser 7760GX. The fills appear  fine when exporting to a pdf and when printing from the pdf. They also appear fine when printing on BW HP printer (sans the color, of course).
The file performs the same when I open on other computers with their own InDesign application. One of my colleagues has updated v. 7.5.1  but still has same problem.
    So far, I have:
exported to IDML file and reopened the file in InDesign 5.5
    purged all inDesign preferences
    downloaded latest printer driver
following Adobe troubleshooting instructions, isolated the Transparency as the cause
(when setting spread flattening to None in the pages flyout menu, my fills return, but of course the drop shadow/transparency is disabled)
    Any ideas?

Some printers just don't get along well with ID. Exporting PDF and printing that is the normal workaround.

  • Importing a .psd file - getting weird effects with drop shadows!! HELP!

    Hi all,
I'm trying to import a psd file as my site and then animate each page.
I have each page set up as a different layer and am importing each page as a movie clip so  i can animate each one separately.
The problem is that i have some images on each page that have drop shadows ( i have flattened these in photoshop so there is no longer the blending options layers attached). When flash imports all the layers it obviously has all of them visible at the same time initially.
When i then go through and separate each page to show at different points in the timeline, the images with drop shadows are now showing the image that was underneath it on import, instead of the drop shadow. Difficult to explain, but if you imagine a page with a square in the middle. That square has a drop shadow along two edges which is a slight shading. On a different page (on the layer underneath) there is just a big image of the sea (could be anything). When i import them, the page with the square is sitting directly on top of the page with the image of the sea. I separate these in the timeline so they show at different points, but when it's just the page with the square showing (the page with the sea isn't showing at this point), instead of the nice shading for the drop shadow, in it's place is the thin part of the image of the sea that was initially under the shading for the drop shadow....
Can anyone suggest what is happening and why, and how to quickly fix it in Flash. It took me AGES to import the whole site and all the pages, but now all the movieclips are completely useless because all the drop shadows are messed up with the images that were importing underneath them???!
I'm in a real rush here too, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

How was the original art created? Was the original RGB or CMYK? What is the resolution of the Photoshop file? Flash only works well with RGB and 72 pixel per inch resolution. If your original art is not set this way, then Flash will attempt to convert it as it imports it. Flash uses the sRGB color space. You'll get the best color translation if your Photoshop file is using this color preference.

  • Pie chart drop shadows not printing properly.. cuts off right hand side of pie chart...???

Every time I go to print a pie chart that has a drop shadow applied to it, it cuts off the right hand side of the chart along with the shadow itself.  It looks HORRIBLE!!!  I went through and created a bunch of reports using that method, and now ALL of them have this problem.  It makes ZERO sense to me, and it appears that nobody else is experiencing this.  Does anybody have any ideas?

  • Drop Shadows and Color Copiers

If you have a color copier or color laser printer try this test:
    1. Create a page in InDesign with a pale CMYK background (I'm using 40% C, 30% M)
    2. Create a small white box on top of the background and rotate it 10 to 60°
    3. Add a drop shadow with default settings (multiply 100% K at 75% opacity)
    4. Export a PDF using ANY export settings you like
    5. Print the PDF to your color copier out of Acrobat, again using any setting you like
What I get is a bounding box around my white square that is a slightly different color than the background tone. It is obviously the area that includes transparency because of the drop shadow, which is being rasterized either when the file is made into a PDF or when it is printed. This same PDF looks fine on screen in Acrobat and looks fine when rasterized into Photoshop: absolutely no difference in the color of the background visually or with the eye-dropper. This PDF also prints totally fine when I send it directly to my cheapo inkjet and when I drop it into my color managed RIP that runs our higher-end inkjets. I should add that there is no RIP in front of the 2 different color copiers I am testing. The same thing happens on a client's color copier.
What appears to be happening is that the color copier renders raster data differently than vector data, which results in this bounding box being visible. I've tried printing directly out of InDesign and indeed if I select "Print as Bitmap" in the advanced tab, the problem goes away. However, I need to be able to send out PDFs that will print correctly on any kind of office printer. Obviously I could rasterize the whole thing in Photoshop, but I've got hundreds of flyers to prepare, and they need to be small enough to e-mail and look good when printed.
There is no "Print as Bitmap" option when creating PDFs, and they would probably be too big anyway. How can I get the drop shadow effect to work correctly in this situation?
    Thanks in advance!
    -Todd Shirley

    Thanks for the link Bob!
It ALMOST works. In the link a procedure is described for rasterizing the whole page by creating a custom Transparency Flattener Preset, which I would THINK would solve my problem. Unfortunately the only way to access Transparency Flattener Presets in the PDF export is to set Compatibility to Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3), which creates a PDF that my color copier won't print at all! It just hangs in whatever that thing has for a RIP. I left one for about a half hour and it finally came out all crazy messed up.
The goal here is to create a relatively small PDF that can be distributed to hundreds of offices and printed correctly on whatever kind of office machine they have. My Canon color copier is brand new and if it chokes on PDF 1.3 I can only imagine what older copiers will do.
So the quest continues! Is there any way to fix the problem without rasterizing the whole page? Or is there a way to rasterize the whole page but make a PDF 1.4 or higher? Keep the suggestions coming!
    -Todd
