Drop shadow for invisible object

Just an idle thought...
If an object has neither stroke nor fill, is it possible to trick Illustrator
into generating a drop shadow for it?

Nope.
The object must have either a fill or a stroke to apply the Drop Shadow effect. You
can try simply setting a fill color to the same as your background color, or white.

  • Generate "Drop-Statements" for DB-Objects

    Hi,
is it possible to generate drop statements for the different DB-Objects?
Most of the time when I generate DDL - Statements for Tables and Sequences I need a drop statement for this object to recreate.
And is it possible to supress the schema-name?
    CREATE TABLE "SCHEMA"."TABLE"

I apologize. I had interpreted the first posting in the thread differently than you. I had read "Most of the time when I generate DDL - Statements for Tables and Sequences I need a drop statement for this object to recreate" to mean that when the user generates the DDL for a table or sequence include a DROP statement prior to the CREATE statement. If these were automatically generated and the user accidentally ran the script, they may lose data in the table or the value of the sequence. That is why I was suggesting that the DROP statement generation be configurable when DDL for a table is generated.
    My mistake,

  • No drop shadow for Opera under Pekwm with xcompmgr-dana.

    Hi,
I'm running Pekwm with xcompmgr-dana and tint2. It works great except for one thing: There's no drop shadow on Opera windows. All other windows (except a couple of terminal emulators) have drop shadows. Any idea why there's no drop shadow for Opera, and if there's anything I can do to fix it?
I am running fully updated Arch x64 on a laptop with Intel graphics.

No the culprit is not urxvt, I think. I tried today 'terminal' from xfce4 and it too don't have shadows...
Someone can reproduce this with any other terminal?
Uhh, one more question of the people having or not the problem what is set the color depth of  X, I think that fglrx only support >16 but I can't make it work with 32 (using 24) someone can run at 32 and see with you get or not shadows?
    EDIT
Ok, I think I found the culprit: ARGB visual (or RGBA visuals...) if a program use it shadows don't work. Try emesene it have a config to use or not rgba visuals,  If you set it (in .config/emesene*/*****) you don't get shadows if don't set you get shadows.
I think this explain the dual transparency/shadow... When I gonna investigate it more but now I have a homework of QFT to do...

  • Cannot Remove Drop Shadows for Icon Labels on Windows 8.1 Desktop

I have a new Dell Laptop with Windows 8.1 and a touch screen.  The Icon labels on the Desktop have black shadows on white text. I have searched for answers and have tried the following, none of which worked.  Is there anything else I can try?
Removed the checkmark by "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" under System Properties, Advanced, Performance Options, Visual Effects tab, clicked on Apply, rebooted.  Verfied that the ListViewShadow DWORD value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
    is set to 0 (zero).
Made sure that the "Show my desktop background on Start" on the Taskbar and Navigation properties Navigation tab is unchecked.

    Hi,
Have you restarted the computer before checking the results?
Also, I suggest you configure this registry key since HKEY_CURRENT_USER is just a mapped one of current user:
    HKU\S-1-5-21-************\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\ListviewShadow
Note: Find your user GUID under HKU.

  • Drop Shadow for text does not work

I can't get drop shadow to work for text.  Every time I click on a text box and then click Effects, the drop shadow option does not appear as clickable and is basically blanked/darkened out.  It only works for boxes/objects other than text but every tutorial out there shows that I am doing this correctly.  What am I missing?  Can you no longer make text with a drop shadow?

I've tried that too... when I go to the text tool and select the text itself the "effects" button disappears altogether and I can't find any other options to initiate drop shadow except through the "effects".
Using the selection tool it's not available.
Using the text tool... it's just not there at all.

  • Drop shadow only on objects below not on background?

You could use a clipping mask

  • Drop Shadow for Windows Splash Screen

    Hi,
I need to create a splash screen for a client who is a Windows software developer.
I'm working on a Mac with Photoshop CS3.
It's simple enough given that I just have to create a 320x240 image and send it over to them.
However what I'd like to do is add a drop shadow to the graphic which shows up with transparency when the splash screen appears on the Windows desktop.
    Any clues?
    Thanks.

With what technology is the developer working? . . . Pass.
What file formats can they accept? . . . I'll give PNG24 a go on a dummy graphic and ask them to try it.
    Thanks.
    Bob.

  • New to Pshop, trying to make gradient drop shadow for webpage

I am a newbie, just got Pshop and watching every tutorial I can find but can't seem to figure out how to make this graphic.  This is a background image for one of my websites (where I did not create the graphic).  Can anyone point me to a good tutorial or walk me through how to create this for a new site I am working on?  Thanks, Gary

or... you could use CSS3 drop shadows on the containing element and skip the need for background images all together.
otherwise I would defer to the list just provided... there seems to be some good tuts in there on how to do what you are looking for...
the hickup you will run into is fading the shadow out at the bottom... this will require seperating the fx layer out and masking it off...
or just masking the layer itself since the your background is the same color as the element.

  • Drop shadow for images

I've done this easily in Photoshop CS3 but now I'm trying to teach people with Elements 6 or 7 how to add a drop shadow to their images. The help menu seems to think that I would add it only to text.
When I follow the procedure with an image open, nothing happens.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Mary Lou

    Mary Lou,
To add a drop shadow to the entire picture:
    1. Duplicate the picture layer.
    2. Increase the canvas size. The duplicate layer will be on transparent background.
    3. Apply the Drop Shadows Layer Style. To change the default shadow, open the Style Settings and adjust the various settings.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1bxVVZCr9XHbMWpqGLbFyTNkpdVsma1
You can also create a drop shadow not using the layer style:
    1. Duplicate the picture layer and increase canvas as above.
    2. Ctrl-click the duplicate layer to select it.
    3. Create a new layer below the duplicate layer and fill with black.
    4. Use the Move tool to position the black layer where you want the shadow to be.
    5. Soften the edges of the black layer using a Gaussian Blur.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1fUAf62zQNztHfAbEOjTg8DSGaltBl0
In both methods you can lighten the shadow by reducing the layer's Opacity, or darken the shadow by duplicating the layer.
Also note that when you use the Drop Shadows Layer Style, when the Style Settings is open you can use the mouse to drag the shadow wherever you want, even totally off the object (unlike with the Shadow Distance slider).

  • Drop Shadow caused by light source (Motion 3)?

i am trying to create some drop shadows with objects in Motion, and i cannot seem to find a way to allow the 3D lights, to create a drop shadow for the object that is blocking the light. The object is also in a 3D group.
I am aware that you can just enable the "Shadow" box in the properties tab when in a 2D project/group, but this is not available when in a 3D group, so...
    Is this not implemented yet?

No, this is NOT available in Motion yet. Need to go over to After Effects for the Cast Shadow and Accept Shadow options.

  • Is there a way to create a preset for drop shadows?

I'm setting up a template for a new brochure that will need drop shadows on every product that is being placed. Is there a way to save a preset for a drop shadow so I need not have to recreate the shadow every time? Also this is being distributed to many people to work on and effects presets would be hugely beneficial-just not sure if that is possible? Although it is Indesign, and they are usually on the up and up for this kind of thing.
    Thanks!
    FF

The Eyedropper Tool is a quick way of applying the same drop shadow to many objects
But as peter says object styles is a much simplier way.

  • InDesign cs6 crashes when exporting objects with drop shadows to interactive PDF

I am using the trial version of InDesign CS6 on a mac OSX 10.7.4  I need to export my document as an interactive PDF. I have found that the export works fine so long as none of the objects within my document have a drop shadow. However, if I add a drop shadow to any object (text, images, or video) InDesign will crash when I try to export. I am adding the drop shadow by selecting the object and then choosing Object > Effects > Drop Shadow. Is there another method I should be using to add the shadow if I want to export to an Interactive PDF?

Hi Peter, thanks for the response. Yes, I have tried creating a new blank project and adding one text object with a drop shadow and then exporting to Interactive PDF, and I experienced  the same result. I tried replacing my preferences as you suggested and found that it did not have any affect.
I continued developing my InDesign document without using any drop shadows and began to experience the same type of crashing under two more circumstances. 1. When relinking assets in my Links panel. 2. When exporting to interactive PDF with interactive objects that are being clipped (I get a warning telling me I have clipped objects before I export; when I click export I experience the same crash.) I have tried exporting the same file to a print (non-interactive) PDF and experienced no crashing.
I thought I should mention that I am using a retina display mac book pro with 16GB RAM. Could my graphics cards or the configureation of my machine be causing my issue?
    Thanks so much,

  • Drop shadow on eps shape produces fine line when inserted into InDesign and PDF created.

Hi I am having a few issues with an eps file that I have created. Basically it is a eps file with shapes, a gradient and a drop shadow on the outlined text - created in illustrator.
All looks fine until I take it into Indesign and create a pdf. I then get a line around where the drop shadow is. Zooming in doesn’t make it go away, but it also does not change its size.
I have done some research and tried one fix (have the drop shadow as another object using multiply as the opacity) this did not work.
Anything else talks of spot colours (there are none) or just having view ok on the screen (take off smoothing). But none of these are fixes for when I send this image to my client. I also tried saving as different pdf formats but this also does not work.
The only way I can make it go away is to save the file as an illustrator ai file and use that for pdfs. This would be OK, but other suppliers need to use the file and want eps format.
From what I have read, it seems to be a screen artefact and so theoretically should not appear when printed. But I do not know this for sure and I hesitate to send it to the client as it is.
Has anyone seen this before? And are there any fixes (e.g.: treating the drop shadow differently)?
    Thanking you in advance.
    Cheers
    Nikola

EPS is simply unsuitable when dealing with transparency (which is what your drop shadow is). So you need to work with AI for placing in InDesign. If other suppliers need EPS, then just send them that. Nothing should keep you from exporting another file format.

  • "Drop shadow" creates a line - problem

    Hi,
I'm in process of making a map (17x22 inches) and I encountered quite disturbing problem with "drop shadow" effect.
I tried to drop shadow on an object 12x18 inches size with those parameters:
And I got nice result on all of the shape, except the lower part, which give me a line. Like cutting through the shadow thing:
I will add that object is on the layer alone and nothing is interacting with it.
At first I thought that maybe this is display problem, not the shadow itself, so I zoomed in and out, but nothing changed. Then I made sure that all anchors are connected one to another - I'm sure the object IS closed. I tried to manipulated anchors points, changed shape of the object a bit, add, remove some anchors, changed shadows parameters - nothing made any difference in how the shadow looks like. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ania

Your file helped me a lot, Larry. But I still think I got some nasty bug in my original file and I will explain You, why I still think that.
When I opened Your file the shadow was flawless. But when I copied the object You sent me to my old file to replace it, the line appeared in the exactly same place. I thought that maybe, in some weird way other layers and objects mess with that effect but no... When I started to copied objects FROM my old file to YOUR new fixed file, shadow remained nice. So it seems that my old file is somehow corrupted (calculating gaussian blur seems to be the problem there), on the new file - where ALL parameters are the same, all the layers and shapes are the same as in old file except for Your "Drop Shadow" effect - there is NO such problem. Look:
My old file after copying Yours fixed object (line again!):
And here Your file with all the rest of my graphics:
So thanks to You, I may keep on working on my project but the mystery remains.
    Cheers,
    Ania
