Drop shadow in .ai causing transparency problems for .eps (needed for MS Publisher – PDF)

I have icons with drop shadows created in .ai. I need to make the icons available for others who use MS Office Publisher to create print materials (export to PDF). I use .eps files for this however the drop shadow is making a white background (if I take out the drop shadow the background is transparent). How do I save the icons so that the background is transparent with the drop shadow?

Simply, you don't.
EPS is a flat file format and does not support transparncy, therefore all transpency is flattened upon saving.
You may be better off saving as png or pdf to support transparency.

You don't need conversion programs, iTunes can copy most of your content over to the iPad via the file sharing section, and some apps also support Dropbox, email attachments, transfer via your wifi network. There are a number of apps that you can get that support Microsoft office file (microsoft don't make an app versions of their software) e.g. from Apple there are Pages (word support), Numbers (excel) and Keynote (powerpoint), and from third-parties there are apps such as Documents To Go and QuickOffice HD

I've installed bootcamp 4.0 on my iMac 27. Everything works superb, but for playing need for speed run or battlefield 3 I need catalyst driver 11.7 or higher. How can I update my graphics? Is there a possibility except waiting for a new bootcamp version?

But how do you install the drivers if Bootcamp is running interference?
Bottom line, I'ev tried to install three different versions of updated ATI driver sover the last few momnths and on each and every occassion have ended up with the original Bootcamp driver. A number of current games are unplayable on a Mac running Bootcamp as a result.
And if I can't run the software I want, then Bootcamp is as useless as boobs on a bull.

Having a problem: Placing image or putting drop shadow on rectangle causing entire page to lighten up.

I don't know how to word this properly, so I'm sorry if I'm doing this all wrong! I'm having a problem with my document in indesign. I have placed a jped image on the page to serve as the background image. I did this on the master page. I first noticed this problem when I was trying to put a .psd image onto the page. When I did, it would cause the entire page to dramatically brighten! I finally gave up and moved on, and now I ran into the problem again when I created a new rectangle box. I put a drop shadow effect on the box and when I did this, it also made the entire page lighten up. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem??

Whenever you add a transparency effect such as drop shadow over another image, especially a grayscale image, InDesign changes how the page is rendered to reflect what it will look like when printed. As I understand it, nothing has changed but the display. Choose View > Overprint Preview to avoid such surprises and get a more accurate representation of what you'll see when printed when colors are separated. If your document is going to be output to PDF or SWF, choose Edit > Transparency Blend Space > Document RGB instead of Document CMYK.

Copy/Paste graphic w/drop shadow to indesign - loses transparency

See above image.. I made a vector version of our company logo in illustrator (all programs referenced are cs5 btw) and it looks great, but when I copy and paste from Illustrator to InDesign, it loses the transparency around the logo. If I place the logo instead, it works fine. The trouble is there are about 16 variations of the logo, and its MUCH easier to copy/paste from one aggregate file instead of having many different logo files to place.
Background on how the logo was created: The inner circle area is multiple different gradient layers (some with transparency masks as well). The white line around the outside is an expanded stroke, and it had a drop shadow effect applied (Stylize menu), which I expanded so it would scale properly when scaling the logo up and down. I agree with Bob's suggestion to use separate "layer groups" in your logo file for different styles. I also use separate layers inside InDesign to "multi-purpose" company documents with different backgrounds, graphics, and content. But that's the only way I use layers inside InDesign – Not for general placement of image files! I also disagree with ability to copy and paste graphics from Illustrator with drop shadow. Here's an .ai logo which I quickly added Drop Shadow to in Illustrator CS4, and then a Copy and Paste into InDesign CS4 document. Best workflow practice is to 'Place' image files as Bob suggests, linking them from a separate file folder.
For something "quick and dirty" I see no problem with Copy and Paste, but your success may vary based on OS, and CS versions you are using! Sometimes it is wiser to take a few shortcuts to hit rather than miss that deadline!

To use a hard drive for both PC and Mac, you need to empty the drive, and reformat it to either:
FAT32 format : if you want it to work with old windows XP computers and Airport Extreme or Time capsule. Note however that you will not be able to load files larger than 4 Gigabytes on FAT32.
exFAT : to be able to put > 4 Gig files (but will not work with XP and Airport)

I don't think there a client version with 10.2.0.2 available yet. You may have to install 10.2.0.1 client software and then patch it to 10.2.0.2 using the regular RDBMS patch (there is no 10.2.0.2 for client alone). I did this some time back.

Changes to the code will be on the service side where in the Folders_g service calls need to be replaced with Framework Folders . Documentation for the FF services are :

New to Pshop, trying to make gradient drop shadow for webpage

I am a newbie, just got Pshop and watching every tutorial I can find but can't seem to figure out how to make this graphic. This is a background image for one of my websites (where I did not create the graphic). Can anyone point me to a good tutorial or walk me through how to create this for a new site I am working on? or... you could use CSS3 drop shadows on the containing element and skip the need for background images all together.
otherwise I would defer to the list just provided... there seems to be some good tuts in there on how to do what you are looking for...
the hickup you will run into is fading the shadow out at the bottom... this will require seperating the fx layer out and masking it off...
or just masking the layer itself since the your background is the same color as the element.

Drop shadow problem with Illustrator CS5

I've used drop shadow several times with no problems in both photoshop and Illustrator... currently I'm dropping a white shadow onto a black background and although the shadow drops correctly around the object I've noticed that there is some sort of extra white blur that is happening several inches away from my images reguardless of what shape they are. Let me know if a file would help and I can email an example of the problem. Thanks

Wade, This does look like the exact problem I'm having. I do not want to make a clipping mask because I have around 20 pages with numerous images on each page of varying sizes... I tried- Effect/Document Raster Effect Settings, Under options I played with a couple different settings but none seem to have fixed the problem... There is a check box for;
Anti-alias
Create Clipping Mask
-Add _____ in. Around Object
Preserve spot colors
I'm not familier with these settings and didn't know what you were recommending I change exactly?

Drop Shadows and Transparency in Illustrator CS4

here's what's happening in Illustrator CS4.
Create a new document
In Attributes, check overprint fill
Add any text
Apply a drop shadow
Dave as Illustrator EPS - during save, set Overprint to "Preserve"
Once saved, you get the dreaded white box behind the drop shadow.
Is there any way to preserve transparency in Illustrator CS4 when applying a drop shadow?

First why are you using eps which does not support transparency except as one bit?
Why not as ai or pdf?
But you can try to use a tiff preview and select transparent there but Macintosh preview should make it so automatially.

Odd problem with drop shadows

I shot some footage of a guy in front of a green screen. I got an awesome key and I put him in front of a white background. In order to add a more animated look I want to put a drop shadow behind him. The problem I am experiencing is when I add a cross dissolve in between two cuts. When I add the transition the white background flashes grey and then dips back to white. Any ideas?

I've seen this happen before. It's possible it's a "left over" render that's stuck in FCP's brain. Try highlighting the clips, Control + B on them, then Control + B again. sometimes that will delete the render file associated with that portion.
Or you can try relaunching FCP.
