Drop shadow on garbage matte

Happy New Year All. I may be missing something obvious. I made a hole in an animated background with a matte. It is static. An HD interview video is placed behind. It looks like a photo with straight edges and I did it to fake a mild zoom in out on the video. I want a drop shadow on the "photo". Possibly too much Holiday cheer but I can't think of a way to put a drop shadow on the rectangular matte in Motion 4. I guess that I could bring in a shadow made in some other app but would like to stay in Motion. Thoughts? Thanks.

As you can see in this picture, the image is larger is larger than what is visible. The drop shadow follows the mask, not the outline of the picture.
What are you doing differently?

  • Drop Shadow on a matte key

    hi guys
I need to know how to put a drop shadow on a matte key that I did with travel matte luma.
I keyed the matte and fill on a background using composite mode travel matte based on luma ... but I cant seem to create or get the drop shadow to work??? ... any suggestions or reasons why??
help this old avid editor on this new thingee called FCP
    thanks in advance

The drop shadow is being applied to the whole frame. Which is why you can't see it.
Your graphic needs to be taken into Photoshop, placed on a transparent background and saved as a TIFF, with the "Preserve Transparency" option checked on.
This way you will not need to prepare a matte of any kind. The graphic will composite automatically and any drop shadow or other effect will be discreet.

  • Drop shadow on mattes and fills

    Hi folks
I have just composited a matte and a fill graphic over a commecial using the composite mode travel matte - luma, now I need to put a drop shadow on to that comp...but alas drop shadow does not work in the motion tab on either the alpha or fill , nor does a drop shadow effect from the effects tabs...
    any ideas ?

    peace in africa...

This is really a question for the Final Cut Pro forum as you are talking about Final Cut Pro functionality.
The reason you can't see a drop shadow is because you are using a pre-existing alpha clip (a clip of white and black that serves as your transparency information). The travel matte luma effect can only use the video information in the alpha clip to determine the transparency. The alpha clip is a full-frame clip so any drop shadow applied will appear outside the frame.
The best thing to do is to recreate your fill graphic in its original application, and export it with an embedded alpha channel. Then you won't need to have an alpha clip or use the travel matte-luma to composite. FCP can read embedded alpha channels so you would just place your graphic over your video, render and be done with it. Then you can add drop shadows to your heart's delight.

  • Having a strange problem with Drop Shadows in Ai CS5

    Hi there Adobe experts!
I have tried eveything... this is my first post here, but it's my only hope. I have a project where I apply drop shadows to linked images to give a sense of depth. A few days ago, the drop shadows just stopped feathering. It doesn't matter what the blur is set to, its just one colour. Transparency still applies. Here's the kicker...I can open files with applied drop shadows to them and they look fine. But if I try to edit that existing shadow, even by 0.0001 of a pt, it will lose its feathering.
I've deleted the AiPrefs file, and played with just about every setting in document raster effects settings. I have no clue what would cause this.
Oh, and whatever the issue is, it starts in my computer, and then attaches to the files... I sent the ai file to a friend, and when he tried to add drop shadows, they screwed up on his machine too. But it isn't the file. I've attached a brand new (and CMYK, just to see if that would make a difference...) file of a sphere showing the problem. Even with the blur super high, the shadow remains flat and monochromatic.
Any geniuses seen this before or have a remote clue how to solve this one?
    Thanks in advance,
    Luke

All my ram is tripple channel DDR3, same clock speeds, but some is 2GB and some is 4GB.
I just pulled the 2GB sticks (which I had in originally) and left in the 4GB sticks (the ones I recently purchased) and the problem goes away. It's quite odd, I've never had a problem like this before with any other application. I know it's not the best thing in the world to have different types of RAM installed, but my motherboard supports it and I've never had a problem doing it before.
I would be interested to see if this problem is reproducable in the OP's senario, or if this problem can be reproduced by others.
Conclusion: the 2GB sticks work on their own, and the 4GB sticks work on their own. I definitly would not call this a hardware problem, it's an adobe problem and they need to fix their software.

  • White box behind transparent images with drop shadow in InDesign CC 2014 (v.10) but not in InDesign CC (v.9)

    Hi all,
Please can you help? No matter what settings I use in my print options in InDesign CC 2014 (v.10), ALL transparent images with a drop shadow are printing with a white box behind the image. If I remove the drop shadow, all prints fine. I know this is an old issue that happens with ID sometimes but I have been lucky enough to never have had it happen to me before! (All images are regular flattened TIFF images with clipping paths).
Also, feathered edges are not printing correctly and are sharp instead of feathered.
When I export the document to IDML and open it up in InDesign CC (v.9) all prints perfectly with no white boxes and feathered edges prints perfectly as well. I have compared all of the print settings (including color management, transparency flattener, etc.) between both versions and they are exactly the same. I am printing to a Xerox color laser printer. Can anyone offer any advice?
    Thank you so much,
    Christine

Okay...false alarm! It turns out that the issue was with my PRINTER settings (the settings you customize after hitting the “Printer” button at the bottom of the Print dialogue box in ID CC. I thought I had triple checked this but it seems there was one setting I missed earlier…adjusting the print brightness seemed to cause the issue. SO GLAD to know it was not InDesign…20 or so sheets/prints later….and thankful to know what was causing the issue! Thank you so much Steve for helping at any rate:) Much appreciated:)

  • Illustrator CC Drop Shadow Issue

Since upgrading to Illustrator CC, I am having random issues with drop shadows. It doesn't matter if the shadow is applied to a basic vector graphic per screenshot attached, or to a placed transparent image, and it can be on complex shapes or very simple shapes. I get these odd straight lines running through the shadow. It is just a CMYK file (no spot colour), set up for print, document raster effects resolution set to 300ppi. I have tried fiddling with the drop shadow settings, if I move the x and y settings it just moves the line. If I keep the x and y distance the same but remove the blur value, the line disappears (see screenshot without blur). It is not related to transparency, because even if I flatten the image and expand the shadow, it is still there.

Dhirendra Mohan, thanks but it happens on all different shapes and sizes, irrelevant of stroke being added or not, but it is definitely linked to high resolution, larger files.
Raymarcher, I reckon you've nailed it. I did not have this problem with CS5 on the same size files but updating to CC has caused a lot of performance issues on my Mac. Photoshop CC has already told me to update my video card. I'm running:
    iMac 24" 2009 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4gb 1067 MHz DDR3
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256MB
    Running OS X 10.8.5
Waiting on the next release of iMac before buying. Will just have to adjust the raster effects resolution in the meantime and will certainly try switching off other applications when working on large files and see if that works. Have never used SVG drop shadow but will read up thanks.
So problem not totally solved, clarification from Adobe that this would be the cause would be great, before I buy a new iMac please.
    Cheers,
    Julie

  • PP CS6 Title Safe Motion Automatic Drop Shadow - WHY and how do I turn it off?

    Hello all.
I'm new to Premiere (one week) after years on Avid. So go easy on me.
I've created a title that I've added some motion to (basic stuff, just moved the position/added some directional blur so that the camera pan matches the title movement). The moment the edge of the title frame enters the screen a drop shadow appears - but only if there's motion (see attached picture).
At first I thought it wouldn't show up on export- but it did. I'm sure it was placed there by programmers as some kind of marker, or edge warning, but why in the world can't I find a place to shut it off? I tried everything, watched about 2 hours worth of adobe TV, youtube, vimeo tutorials, read forums, the software's help section, etc. Had a chat conversation with an adobe rep in India and he suggested I animate using title crawl - in the end he didn't know how to turn the shadow off. I could always go to AE, but why should I have to do this for something so basic? Is there ANY way to shut this feature off (considering how customizable everything that adobe makes tends to be)? Or do I have to bite the bullet and create a Matte to over the shadow (silly considering it wasn't my creative choice).
PS: If I stack video on top of video the same shadow does not appear, even if I add motion to it - so this is a title only problem.
PPS: Yes, I could zoom into the frame to avoid the shadow (and if there is no answer or solution to my question I will do that) but why should there be a permanent shadow on a Title frame that already has several safety markers - including a while edge around the frame???? Or furthermore, why should we be limited to work inside a frame???
    Thank you for your help/time.

It's locked and I'm unable to toggle it, but it seems like that is the current setting. It still shows the shadow.

  • Drop Shadow Orange blur issue

    AI CC v. x.0.0
    Work PC Setup:
    Core i7
    16gb ram
    Windows 8.1
    GTX 750
The issue randomly arose on my co-workers pc. Has been working 100% until suddenly when she applies a drop shadow. The drop shadow has an orange blur extending out from it. However when we save out a file the orange disappears. No changes had been done to the pc and no updates were done. Restarting app and/or pc makes no difference. We made a new file separate from the original issue one, same deal. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Actually strangely enough we went back to take a screenshot and it seems to have fixed itself.
Options for the effect didn't matter. No matter the blending option, opacity, color, etc. Was done on varying color background as well as black and white bgs. Always had a peach-orange blur around the actual shadow itself. The exported image also was random variables I attempted. High quality or low quality jpg, PDF, TIF, or .eps. All appeared on screen perfectly fine in acrobat, windows image preview, and our rip. It was only in actual illustrator at it caused an issue. And now sadly I can't even show the silly thing. I apologize, but I do appreciate the real quick response.

  • Drop shadow on a wall  perspective

I am trying to figure out how to create the drop shadow of a sphere on a wall.
I am not a beginner on that matter ( well ... I am ready to learn more)
The blue lines represent the sun rays and the sun trace wich is in front and on the right side of the viewer P.
The green sun grid represent the sun position on the azimut moved and vertically aligned to the viewer position P. This to create the trace of the sphere on the wall.
From here I am missing something.
It is your cue. What am I missing?
How do I join files to define my question?
    http://privee.jeanpierredaviau.com/news/perspective.gif

    I am working at it.
    In perspective 2 . gif
Normally the second set of lines (trace) is build from the real position of the sun (azimuth) dropped on the horisn line.
The real position of the sun gives one set of lines.
The position of the sun displaced on top of the P point gives the other set of lines.
The encounter of the two sets establish dots from wich the shadow is drawed.
It should be the same with a sphere.

  • Drop Shadow Effect Cannot Be Seen

I'm using CS4 for Windows and I own several great books for it, yet I'm still struggling completing a simple drop shadow effect on a photo. No matter what I try from using the simple drop shadow fx or complex suggestions building several different layers, I never see the final effect on the photo. I even click and unclick "preview" but it makes no difference. The photo displayed in my CS4 window continues to look just like the photo when I first opened it. Am I supposed to flatten the layers or somehow bring them together into one layer?
    I'm stumped.
I'd appreciate any help. I'm sure I'm doing something completely ignorant, but I'm willing to make myself look a fool to finally resolve this.
    Again, thanks.
    Regards,
    Bob

The drop shadow appears on the transparent side of the opaque/transparency interface. You can't get a drop shadow on a totally opaque layer because there's no such interface. If you're working on the background, convert it to a layer or duplicate it and work on the duplicate. Select the object which is to cast the shadow and put it on its own layer (CTRL J). The area outside the selection will be transparent. Highlight that layer, double-click to the right of its name on the layers palette to bring up the layer effects dialog box. Select the drop shadow effect, and tweak the settings including opacity to define the shadow. While the dialog box is still open you can drag the shadow to any position. Once you close the dialog box, the object and shadow move together.

  • Using Transparency and Drop Shadows

I'm applying a drop shadow to text in different text boxes and on different curvy paths and also to various vector objects. When I turned on the flattener preview, I noticed that lots of text and vectors were being rasterized. I know the common solution is to bring the text and vector objects to the front, however, no matter what I do, one text's shadow or some other vector objects's shadow inevitably effects one other. The only solution I came up with was to copy all the items that have drop shadows, then paste in place on top of the same objects. I then removed the drop shadow from the top layer of items and left the drop shadow on the bottom layer of objects. Is this the best way to do this?
    Thanks for the help.

if you mean using actual layers to manage your documents then this is a good workflow to adopt.
Essentialy layers holding text should always be above those holding images/objects that contain transparany. This can help reduce instances where some of your text may be getting flattened when it interacts with the transparency.
Also when exporting to PDF ensure the 'high resolution' transparency flattener preset is selected to ensure consistent output.

  • Third party garbage matte for ppro cs5?

    Hi there!
I started using ppro cs5 some months ago, coming from fcp, because of the gamma issue in fcp, because of the fact that you can import Red's r3d's directly and because ppro and redcine x communicate nicely. To my amazement there's no decent way of handling a garbage matte, i.e. smoothing it or using edge feather. I'm not about to spend another large sum on after effects--if it communicates directly with ppro like redcine x I will, but I'm afraid it's a question of exporting and importing, which I really dislike--in other words: does anyone know about a third party plugin with a decent garbage matte for ppro cs5?
    Many thanks,
    Hans

The build in gargage is no good as you cannot feather it BUT...
....you can make your own garbage matte in the Titler. Make a filled bezier shape in pure white.
superimpose over you footage and add a blur to make it feather.
Add Track Matte Effect to footage and set this to the matte.
If you want an animated matte drop the garbage matte effect on a white color matte, add the blur and keyframe the points over time.

  • Question about drop shadow size

    Hi All!
I have created a style that only contains a custom drop shadow. I frequently apply this style to illustrations that I'm creating for a book.
However, since updating to CC 2014, I've been having a problem with the style. The size of the drop shadows is different on every illustration I apply it to. I originally set the style up to have a 7 px size, but now, when applied, sometimes the size is 22 px, sometimes 30 px, sometimes 5 px.
Can anyone tell me what is going on and how I can get the drop shadow size to remain constant each time I apply it?
    Thanks in advance!

I believe if you create a layer style preset the Adobe store the resolution of the document that you were editing when you created the preset into the preset so Photoshop can scale the style effect to the resolution of the document you apply the layer style preset to.
Layer style setting as you know are in terms of absolute pixel.  That would mean the size of the shadow would vary on document that had different resolutions,   Notice in menu layers there is Layers>Layer Style>Scale Effects... and In the Image Size dialog(s) there is a check box Scale Styles or a setting Scale Styles..
If it working differently in CC version 15 then is was in CC version 14 they may be a new bug.
If you want a 7px drop shadow no matter what the documents resolution is you may be able to record an action that add a 7 PX drop shadow using the Layer Style dialog not using a preset style.
I  created  a Drop Shadow Preset on a 300 DPI Document distance 2 px size 7px.  I then recorded an action the applied that preset and then applied the same settings using the layer style dialog instead of the preset.  There is a great difference on how the two steps were recorded.
When I step through the action on a 300 DPI document the drop shadows looks the same.  On a 72DPI document the Preset drop shadow looks small like the 300dpi document however the step that was recorded with the Layer Style Dialog the layer drop shadow  looks much larger for it was not scaled down to match the  documents 72DPI resolution.
So it look like if you use a Layer style preset from the style palette the effect will be scaled for the documents DPI resolution.  Notice in the action there is a Layer Style Scale 100% in the step recorded using the layer style dialog.   Where the preset DS is applied some how by Photoshop and Photoshop scales the effect....

I think it depends on whether the component has a HaloBorder

  • Adjustment Layer with drop shadow not working

    Hi,
I have a problem when trying to use an adjustment layer to apply a drop shadow to multiple images.
Here's what I'm trying to do.
I am creating a floating gallery in After Effects CC (latest updates are installed).
There are 75 photos and each photo is a 3D layer.
I want to add a adjustment layer to automatically add a drop shadow to all the images on the timeline.
It doesn't seem to work. Is there another work-around other then manually adding the effect to each image.
    Thanks,
    Cillian.

    Hi Mylenium,
Thanks for the reply. I went and manually added the effect to each layer. For future reference, does it matter that the layer are 3D for a adjustment layer to work?
