Drop shadow only on objects below not on background?

I want the drop shadow to only be visible on the two blue objects below the top object but not on the background.  Any ideas how I can accomplish this? Illustrator CS5. Thanks in advance.

You could use a clipping mask

    Just an idle thought...
    If an object has neither stroke nor fill, is it possible to trick Illustrator
    into generating a drop shadow for it?

    Nope.
    The object must have either a fill or a stroke to apply the Drop Shadow effect. You
    can try simply setting a fill color to the same as your background color, or white.

  • How do I use "Flip" Effect only on one JPG not on Background and JPG?

    Hi I'm a pro editor (but still reletively new) and trying Pro10 I'm using a green screen. Have my guy in front of a background and want to use the "Flip" movement transition.  It seems to literally "grab" the background and flip it too.  How do you have "Flip Transition" only effect the clip I attached it to and not mhy background which I want to be stationary?  I tried "disable" on the background and that was not it... the manual doesn't explain much.  Thanks so much!

    y-e-a-h... that background isn't from anything in FCPX -- it's part of the effect (created in Motion 5).
    I put in a checkbox to turn it off for you.

    Still might not yield the results you expect.

  • InDesign cs6 crashes when exporting objects with drop shadows to interactive PDF

    I am using the trial version of InDesign CS6 on a mac OSX 10.7.4  I need to export my document as an interactive PDF. I have found that the export works fine so long as none of the objects within my document have a drop shadow. However, if I add a drop shadow to any object (text, images, or video) InDesign will crash when I try to export. I am adding the drop shadow by selecting the object and then choosing Object > Effects > Drop Shadow. Is there another method I should be using to add the shadow if I want to export to an Interactive PDF?

    Hi Peter, thanks for the response. Yes, I have tried creating a new blank project and adding one text object with a drop shadow and then exporting to Interactive PDF, and I experienced  the same result. I tried replacing my preferences as you suggested and found that it did not have any affect.
    I continued developing my InDesign document without using any drop shadows and began to experience the same type of crashing under two more circumstances. 1. When relinking assets in my Links panel. 2. When exporting to interactive PDF with interactive objects that are being clipped (I get a warning telling me I have clipped objects before I export; when I click export I experience the same crash.) I have tried exporting the same file to a print (non-interactive) PDF and experienced no crashing.
    I thought I should mention that I am using a retina display mac book pro with 16GB RAM. Could my graphics cards or the configureation of my machine be causing my issue?
    Thanks so much,

  • div drop shadow hidden behind background image of div below

    I am trying to show the <div navigation> drop shadow on top of the <div mainImage> background image. How can I fix the css to show it on top of the bar picture? Here is the site in progress... http://cishenanigans.com/index2012.html
    Thanks!

    You should use z-index. But this works only on absolute or relative positioned elements.
    In your case, replace this:
    #mainImage {
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;
    height: 300px;
    width: 1020px;
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    background-position: center center;
    background-image: url(../images/mainImage.jpg);
    to this:
    #mainImage {
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;
    height: 300px;
    width: 1020px;
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    background-position: center center;
    background-image: url(../images/mainImage.jpg);
    position: relative;
    z-index: -10;
    That should do the trick

  • Drop shadow is not exported in pdf when used in a symbol

    When I apply the effect "drop shadow" on an object and export to pdf it works fine. When I then convert the object into a symbol and export to pdf, the effect is gone.
    Suggestiones other than "don't use symbols" ???

    No, I can't reproduce the Preview issue.
    Maybe it is caused by other options in your file.
    Anyway: Preview is in no way suitable to pre check files for printing.

  • Drop Shadows not showing up with iweb 2.04 in firefox please help!

    Drop Shadows on my frame are not showing up with iweb 2.04 and firefox please help!
    They show up with safari but not firefox. I've read that publishing to mobile me solves it but I publish to my hard drive and ftp to my host (not mobile me).
    Thanks for any help

    Drop shadows, borders etc are a bad idea in that they increase the file size and the download time of your page.
    Create your image, drop shadow etc on your iWeb page, take a screenshot, crop it and replace the original image with the, much reduced, JPEG>

  • Drop shadow issue in Distiller 9.0

    InDesign CS4 has 2-color title, which has Pantone Orange (spot color) and Black (Process Color). The design has two objects, first object has set as Pantone and second object has set as Black on top of the Pantone object and it has Drop shadow too. The drop shadow (Black - Process color) does not appeared on Pantone object while converting PS through PDF whereas the exported PDF from InDesign converted wonderfully. I have attached an images (turned on/off Overprint Preview) for your reference. You can see the difference when you turn on/off "Overprint Preview" in Acrobat. Also thin white rule appeared. Actually the rule should not appear in the PDF. Any help much appreciated.

    What happens if you print one page with the drop shadow together with only one or two pages that don't have the drop shadow? What color mix are your drop shadows?  Like Peter suggested, check the corresponding compression settings in your distiller preset. Heck, check all the compression settings in those presets. I had to use PS to work around some issue once and distinctly remember a problem with the presets making my grayscale elements look low-res because compression was set too high in a preset that was supposed to be high quality.
    Then again, just use Peter's workaround.

  • Drop shadow on eps shape produces fine line when inserted into InDesign and PDF created.

    Hi I am having a few issues with an eps file that I have created. Basically it is a eps file with shapes, a gradient and a drop shadow on the outlined text - created in illustrator.
    All looks fine until I take it into Indesign and create a pdf. I then get a line around where the drop shadow is. Zooming in doesn’t make it go away, but it also does not change its size.
    I have done some research and tried one fix (have the drop shadow as another object using multiply as the opacity) this did not work.
    Anything else talks of spot colours (there are none) or just having view ok on the screen (take off smoothing). But none of these are fixes for when I send this image to my client. I also tried saving as different pdf formats but this also does not work.
    The only way I can make it go away is to save the file as an illustrator ai file and use that for pdfs. This would be OK, but other suppliers need to use the file and want eps format.
    From what I have read, it seems to be a screen artefact and so theoretically should not appear when printed. But I do not know this for sure and I hesitate to send it to the client as it is.
    Has anyone seen this before? And are there any fixes (e.g.: treating the drop shadow differently)?
    Thanking you in advance.
    Cheers
    Nikola

    EPS is simply unsuitable when dealing with transparency (which is what your drop shadow is). So you need to work with AI for placing in InDesign. If other suppliers need EPS, then just send them that. Nothing should keep you from exporting another file format.

  • Keep drop shadow off background

    Hi,
    I'd like to add drop shadows to layers without it hitting the background - so it only lands on the actual objects behind.
    I've currently done this by creating clipping paths to mask off the unwanted areas, but this is a faily complex setup on the file I'm dealing with. If I change the positions of any of the (many) items on the artboard, I have to recreate all the masks.
    Is there a simpler way without using masks, like, for example, just telling the file not to render effects on the background?
    I'm guessing not, but thought it was worth a hopeful ask...
    Thanks
    Kieran

    Hi Kurt
    Sorry - good point - I'm on Illustrator CC
    Here's an example of the effect I'm looking for. The white background is simply the default background of the .AI file - there's no object there. As you can see, the shadow is to fall only on the coloured squares. I've done this using masking, but it's pretty complex...
    Cheers

  • Is there a way to create a preset for drop shadows?

    I'm setting up a template for a new brochure that will need drop shadows on every product that is being placed. Is there a way to save a preset for a drop shadow so I need not have to recreate the shadow every time? Also this is being distributed to many people to work on and effects presets would be hugely beneficial-just not sure if that is possible? Although it is Indesign, and they are usually on the up and up for this kind of thing.
    Thanks!

    The Eyedropper Tool is a quick way of applying the same drop shadow to many objects
    But as peter says object styles is a much simplier way.

  • Problem with Chroma/Lume Keys while using Drop Shadows

    I have been using the box now for almost two years and I still am getting problems with green/blue/purples artifacts showing up after a chroma/luma key has been applied with a drop shadow. The artifacts do not show up under a preview but only when the sequence has been rendered. As soon as I take the drop shadow off, the artifacts go away. This is happening with both still graphics with or without Alphas and green/blue screen video. Please help, am I just missing something or is there a work around that I could be using.
    Thanks,
    Alex

    c'mon, Bogie - tell us what you really feel - don't hold back... < </div>
    Oh, Patrick, buddy, I am so totally torqued out of shape today. Don't get me started. Too late. FCP's insane render handler is dropping my files, seemingly at random. The nests, Motion and LiveType material are not rendering in the correct order which makes the effects all wonky.
    I add drop shadows in the last stage and FCP just ain't holding it together. I get glitches. And then I keep getting these Media Offline notices because FCP cant' track the render files that are actually in use in the upstream nests.
    I'll certainly admit a likely a user error. I just don't know what it could be. I've somehow told FCP to destroy its children.

  • "Drop shadow" creates a line - problem

    Hi,
    I'm in process of making a map (17x22 inches) and I encountered quite disturbing problem with "drop shadow" effect.
    I tried to drop shadow on an object 12x18 inches size with those parameters:
    And I got nice result on all of the shape, except the lower part, which give me a line. Like cutting through the shadow thing:
    I will add that object is on the layer alone and nothing is interacting with it.
    At first I thought that maybe this is display problem, not the shadow itself, so I zoomed in and out, but nothing changed. Then I made sure that all anchors are connected one to another - I'm sure the object IS closed. I tried to manipulated anchors points, changed shape of the object a bit, add, remove some anchors, changed shadows parameters - nothing made any difference in how the shadow looks like. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ania

    Your file helped me a lot, Larry. But I still think I got some nasty bug in my original file and I will explain You, why I still think that.
    When I opened Your file the shadow was flawless. But when I copied the object You sent me to my old file to replace it, the line appeared in the exactly same place. I thought that maybe, in some weird way other layers and objects mess with that effect but no... When I started to copied objects FROM my old file to YOUR new fixed file, shadow remained nice. So it seems that my old file is somehow corrupted (calculating gaussian blur seems to be the problem there), on the new file - where ALL parameters are the same, all the layers and shapes are the same as in old file except for Your "Drop Shadow" effect - there is NO such problem. Look:
    My old file after copying Yours fixed object (line again!):
    And here Your file with all the rest of my graphics:
    So thanks to You, I may keep on working on my project but the mystery remains.
    Cheers,
    Ania

  • Ignore drop shadow on a single layer?

    Is there a way in Illustrator CS4 to have the drop shadow of an object NOT appear on a particul sub-layer?
    The shadow needs to appear on some sub-layers, but not the "background" layer (which is supposed to appear further away, and therefore would not have the drop shadow).
    In case it's not clear what I'm trying to accomplish, here is something I found to do it in Photoshop:
    http://www.planetphotoshop.com/editing-a-drop-shadow.html
    Any direction is appreciated; I have been trying and researching this for quite some time now.

    Thanks Wade, that was as close as I had gotten (using compund paths), but perhaps I was using masking wrong? My outlines would not include the stroke of my artwork, so the masks were cutting into the art.
    Masks have always been my weakness in Illustrator and Photoshop.

  • Drop Shadow On Left Side

    When you apply a drop shadow to an object, such as a rectangle, it always on the right side.  Is there a way to put the shadow on the left side?

    Hello Gary,
    You can change the side of the drop shadow to a rectangle/object by changing the angle of the shadow.
    Please follow the steps below :
    - Select the rectangle.
    - Click on Effects>Shadow.
    - Now increase the value of Angle from 45 to 135 (or something else according to the requirement).
    This changes the angle of the shadow and changes the side where dropdown shadow effect is applied.
    Please have a look at the screenshot :
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Sachin
