Drop Shadow Won't Work

For whatever reason, about half the time I can't get the drop shadow effect to work. I've got the object selected, and the box checked, but it won't work. I feel like I've tried everything!

Hi Michel,
Its a Photoshop image/object.... It clearly within the frame... its animating across the screen (animal)... transparent background over a white background jpeg... No big deal, it just would be nicer if a drop shadow would work... Seems I've been having this reocurring problem for a few weeks now...

Drop shadow won't apply

I've added photo's to my 12x12 document and added a stroke to the inside of the photo to make it look like a developed photo and now I want to add a drop shadow. It shows on the in the layers pallette (fx) that I have done so but no drop shadow appears behind my photo. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong (I'm working in elements 10)

    I never did find out how to resolve my issue with the drop shadows on that document but i did have my photo's extending outside of my document so I decided to try starting over. When I opened a new document and opened my photo's I added the drop shadows before extending them beyond the parameters of my document (12x12). The drop shadows worked and I finished my page and discarded the other PSD, not sure if my solution will help you but I've done a couple more pages with no problems. If you do resolve your issue or come to understand why this is happening I would love to know......

I am having this same problem... my layer styles worked fine just yesterday, however now nothing will appear. I have duplicated backgrounds, added new layers, but nothing shows on my image. I've done everything mentioned in this form and it still does not work. I am frustrated to say the least because everything worked fine yesterday when I was using the layer styles. I don't know what I could have done wrong to prevent these from appearing on my image. Any additional tips would be greatly appreciated.

PH drop shadow multiply not working in illustrator?

Hi guys,
I have quite a few images supplied with photoshop 100% black drop shadow's, I bring these images into illustrator but the shadow seems washy, like the mulitiply isn't working. I dont want to turn the shadow off in ph as the shadow also goes inside the image. Should PH effects be carried through to illustrator??

The Photoshop image is RGB, the Illustrator file is CMYK? Then this could be kind of normal.
Also: check your color management.

See the scrolling text on the flash banner? I added drop shadow filter to it and it isn't showing up, the drop shadow isn't there. I am making that scrolling happen with action script, could that have something to do with it?

Drag and drop feature won't work when loading to ipod from computer

My ipod has been a source of joy for 1 1/2 years. Suddenly, my drag and drop feature has stopped me cold. I can't load my audiobooks from the itunes library to my ipod. Any ideas??

Is the iPod still set up for MANUAL updating?

Drop Shadows and Color Copiers

If you have a color copier or color laser printer try this test:
1. Create a page in InDesign with a pale CMYK background (I'm using 40% C, 30% M)
2. Create a small white box on top of the background and rotate it 10 to 60°
3. Add a drop shadow with default settings (multiply 100% K at 75% opacity)
4. Export a PDF using ANY export settings you like
5. Print the PDF to your color copier out of Acrobat, again using any setting you like
What I get is a bounding box around my white square that is a slightly different color than the background tone. It is obviously the area that includes transparency because of the drop shadow, which is being rasterized either when the file is made into a PDF or when it is printed. This same PDF looks fine on screen in Acrobat and looks fine when rasterized into Photoshop: absolutely no difference in the color of the background visually or with the eye-dropper. This PDF also prints totally fine when I send it directly to my cheapo inkjet and when I drop it into my color managed RIP that runs our higher-end inkjets. I should add that there is no RIP in front of the 2 different color copiers I am testing. The same thing happens on a client's color copier.
What appears to be happening is that the color copier renders raster data differently than vector data, which results in this bounding box being visible. I've tried printing directly out of InDesign and indeed if I select "Print as Bitmap" in the advanced tab, the problem goes away. However, I need to be able to send out PDFs that will print correctly on any kind of office printer. Obviously I could rasterize the whole thing in Photoshop, but I've got hundreds of flyers to prepare, and they need to be small enough to e-mail and look good when printed.
There is no "Print as Bitmap" option when creating PDFs, and they would probably be too big anyway. How can I get the drop shadow effect to work correctly in this situation?

It ALMOST works. In the link a procedure is described for rasterizing the whole page by creating a custom Transparency Flattener Preset, which I would THINK would solve my problem. Unfortunately the only way to access Transparency Flattener Presets in the PDF export is to set Compatibility to Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3), which creates a PDF that my color copier won't print at all! It just hangs in whatever that thing has for a RIP. I left one for about a half hour and it finally came out all crazy messed up.
The goal here is to create a relatively small PDF that can be distributed to hundreds of offices and printed correctly on whatever kind of office machine they have. My Canon color copier is brand new and if it chokes on PDF 1.3 I can only imagine what older copiers will do.
So the quest continues! Is there any way to fix the problem without rasterizing the whole page? Or is there a way to rasterize the whole page but make a PDF 1.4 or higher? Keep the suggestions coming!

Drop shadow on mattes and fills

Hi folks
I have just composited a matte and a fill graphic over a commecial using the composite mode travel matte - luma, now I need to put a drop shadow on to that comp...but alas drop shadow does not work in the motion tab on either the alpha or fill , nor does a drop shadow effect from the effects tabs...
any ideas ?

This is really a question for the Final Cut Pro forum as you are talking about Final Cut Pro functionality.
The reason you can't see a drop shadow is because you are using a pre-existing alpha clip (a clip of white and black that serves as your transparency information). The travel matte luma effect can only use the video information in the alpha clip to determine the transparency. The alpha clip is a full-frame clip so any drop shadow applied will appear outside the frame.
The best thing to do is to recreate your fill graphic in its original application, and export it with an embedded alpha channel. Then you won't need to have an alpha clip or use the travel matte-luma to composite. FCP can read embedded alpha channels so you would just place your graphic over your video, render and be done with it. Then you can add drop shadows to your heart's delight.

I have a facesmessage that i add to the facescontext when a user does not select a option.
The message has a large drop shadow that i would like to remove.
Any Ideas
Also if i could use a different kind of pop up without a drop shadow that would work too.

I don't know where that drop-shadow is coming from (is it your skin, perhaps)? I just whipped up a simple demo, and I don't see a drop shadow.

Drop Shadow in Anamorphic Seq

I'm working on an Anamorphic project and the drop shadow setting doesnt work on imported graphics.
Is this a bug?

Layer mask reveal w/drop-shadow

I have an image silohetted on a trasparent backgound. In order to put a drop shadow on it that only affects the bottom half of the image, I duplicated the layer, added a drop shadow layer style and a layer mask>reveal to fade the effect of the drop shadow. This worked but the layer masked added black or darker coloring to the over all image - then I reduced the fill on that particular layer to 0% and still got the discoloration. Why is the overall image getting darker with the addtion of the lay mask on the layer style? Thanks for your time and consideration up front.

I guess you disabled "knockout" in the Drop Shadow options. If the layer with the shadow had been the lowest layer then it wouldn't have mattered.
Something else that may be useful in future is the Create Layer(s) command for converting Layer Style effects to regular pixel layers.

If you have a tool, try removing the battery cover and chech out. Some times the camera pin may have been misplaced. If so, you can fix it yourself.

Multiple drop down menus won't work

Hi guys,
Mac newbie here: I decided to give them a shot after a lifetime of PC use due to a friend's recommendations.
I'm trying to apply for jobs, and every single site that has two drop down menus, with one dependent on the other, won't work in Safari. (if I go try it out on a PC with IE, it works without any problems). For example, a menu that reads "country" and the next one reads "state". It will let me choose the country, but then the "state" one won't work at all, with the only option being "choose one".
As these are required fields to send the application along, I'm having to borrow someone else's computer every time I apply for a job, and that's getting old fast. Any ideas on how to get Safari to quit hanging up on the dropdowns?
I have no idea if this matters or not, but I bought my Mac when I lived in Japan. I'm still running the English version of the OS, though.

I use www.alldatapro.com for auto repair information. It a members only site so it might be a bad example. The problem im having is, i cant select the first option in any dropdown menu. The badpart about that is some of the menus only have one option. In such a case, i have to log in on regular computer, put the info in, then reload the website on the ipad so i can use the "previous vehicles" option. I have a jailbroken ipad running 4.3.1. The dropdown mnus worked perfect until i upraded to 4.2 and i still havent found the source.

Text fade in/out won't work if a light makes shadows

I found that text won't actually use a fade in/out behavior if you are using a light that projects shadows.
Now, that's an interesting thing. I used to notice with drop-shadows in Mo3, the shadow would show up and the fade would be sort of weird since you could see the shadow under while it faded in. It wasn't a very pretty fade since it got dark and muddy first.
So, now, it just won't let you do it.
Bug or user error?

Adjusting the opacity of a text layer forces it's rasterization. This essentially gives it the properties of a 2D layer which aren't affected by lights.
In order for you to get a cast shadow AND a fade in/out, you must first flatten the text layer. This can be done by selecting the Flatten button in the Text tab of the inspector. Or else you can drop the text into a 3D group and flatten the group from the Group tab.

Illustrator CS6 crashes using Effect Stylize Drop Shadow. There's a work-around

Illustrator CS6 crashes when using Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow on a regular shape e.g. rectangle created by the Ractangle Tool.
I select the shape, apply the effect and it will crash giving this warning dialog: "The operation cannot complete of an unknown error: [CANT]". Then Illustrator CS6 crashes.
This is the crash report in Windows 7 32-bit:
Faulting application name: Illustrator.exe, version: 16.0.0.682, time stamp: 0x4f6e762b
Faulting module name: MMXCore.8BX_unloaded, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4f44e8d6
Exception code: 0xc0000005
The crash happens about 90% of the time.
Possible work-around:
Since I experienced some strange behaviour of CS6 applications before, I experimented witn running Illustrator as an administrator (elevated privileges). When I do that, I can apply the effect without Illustrator CS6 crashing. Here I go again..elevated privileges (see http://forums.adobe.com/message/4432510) .
I have to admit, this is one of the many strange behaviours in CS6 applications that make their performance and reliability very unpredictable.

Because there's no need to do a "repair permissions" thing, that being a bizarre Apple concept.
