Drop zone adjustment

When bringing Imovie6 project into IDVD6, I bring in the project and then select "autofill" for the drop zones. This lets the movie play in the drop zones which is easy and looks kind of cool and I am happy with it. I also notice that when I click on each individual drop zone a slider appears that gives the impression of being able to choose which part and how much of the video plays in each drop zone. However, when I move the slider, it moves, but then returns as soon as I let go of it, making no changes.
1) How do I adjust how much and which part of the video plays in each drop zone?
2) If each drop zone is playing the entire video, is this increasing my rendering time?
Thanks

I have had the same problem. I find it difficult to get the start and stop points set up as I would like them. Here's a solution that I am currently using:
1. Find a segment of your movie that you would like to appear in the drop zone, make it the length you want, and export as a separate clip. I used MPEG Streamclip but any editor should work.
2. Drop that shortened clip into the drop zone. You might need to open the inspector and set a loop duration.
3. Find your full movie and drop it onto the menu placing it anywhere other than the drop zone.
4. A button will appear where you dropped the movie. By adjusting the font size and number of returns you can create a square the same size as the drop zone.
5. Drag the button that you created over the drop zone. The short clip plays under the "invisible" button. Clicking the drop zone causes the entire movie to play.

  • How do you adjust the timings of a video placed in a drop zone?

    Hi,
I brought a template online and have dropped a video into one of the drop zones. It plays fine, although I would like it to start in a different place and fade the sound in and out.
How do I go about doing this?
    Thanks

Trim the Out point of your video so that the entire clip is not in your project (this is so you can slip the video and audio). This step may or may not be necessary if the drop zone is not the same length as your video clip.
Open the timing pane (F6). Hold down OPT while dragging the layer to slip the clip in the project. This will also slip the audio. Once you have it in the right spot, click the audio display button at the bottom of your timing pane (it looks like a little speaker). This will show you your audio track.
Select the audio layer and go to add behavior/audio/audio fade in out. In the inspector, adjust the behavior to taste.

  • Drop Zone Image Adjustment in iDVD '08

I use iDVD 6 for making slideshow DVDs of family functions to send out to my other family members. One of the features that I used in every one of my projects was the ability to drag around any image that you place in the Drop Zone that has been automatically cropped, so that you can pick which part of the image you want to be visible.
In iDVD '08, however, this feature has been removed. What's worse, some of the new themes (Modern, for instance) crop the majority of the images you place into the Drop Zone. I find virtually every new theme in iDVD '08 unusable because of the removal of this feature.
I tried using an old theme from iDVD 6, but I was also unable to adjust the location of my images in relation to the drop zone.
Am I just doing something wrong? In both the toturial vid and the manual, Apple makes no mention of adjusting an image once it's inside the Drop Zone.
In the meantime, I am reverting to iDVD 6. I don't understand why they would remove a feature that was so useful.

*Here's the whole explanation from iDVD Help:*
Repositioning an image or movie in a drop zone
When you drag a picture or movie into a drop zone, the aspect ratio of the image is preserved, but it is scaled larger or smaller to fill the drop zone. As a result, sometimes part of the image is cut off and does not appear in the drop zone. In this case, you can move the image to choose which portion is visible in the drop zone.
_To reposition an image or movie in a drop zone:_
1.) From the drop zone on the menu (not in the drop zone editor), click the image or movie and press Command.
2.) Drag the image until the part you want is visible in the drop zone.
Keep these things in mind as you position an image:
If you drag a narrow image to a drop zone, the image is scaled vertically, and you can move the image up or down only.
If you drag a wide image to a drop zone, the image is scaled horizontally, and you can move the image side to side only.
If you accidentally drag the image too far, you will remove it from the drop zone. (The cursor changes from a hand to a puff of smoke.) Choose Edit > Undo to restore the image to the drop zone.
Repositioning a movie in a drop zone is different from selecting which part of a movie shows in a drop zone (which allows you to select which frame of the movie is displayed in a drop zone). For more information, see Related Topics below.

  • Adjusting a still frame in a drop zone

In previous versions of iDVD, you could move the still image in a drop zone by clicking on it (mainly horizontally -centering an image). In iDVD 08, you can't click on the drop zone and adjust. Checked the help page but no mention. Any suggestions on how to move an image within a drop zone?
    thanks

Thanks for the two quick responses!! You gotta love the immediate assistance you receive on this site. Either I missed this on the idvd help option or they never posted it.

  • Adjusting Motion Template Media in Drop Zones in FCP

The Motion User's manual claims that you can adjust certain parameters of Drop Zone media in templates in FCP. I'll go to the template's Control tab in the Viewer and there are no options and I do not get a red cross-hair in the Canvas as t says I should.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Speaking off the top of my head, if you click on the drop zone then head over to the Inspector pane, there should be a well you can click and drag from to get rid of old content. Not sure why it should hang around though in the first place.

  • Adjusting frame size for drop zones

I posted this question in the Final Cut Forum, but I thought this might be a good place to ask as well.
I exported a wide screen movie out of fce and plopped it on a drop zone on the main theme page in iDVD. The movie has that black band at the top like like it would if it was being played as a wide screen movie on your tv. It there a setting I can adjust to make that movie completely that drop zone?
    Thank you,
    Scott

I wish I had good news for you but I do not. I've been working for the last hour trying to find a solution for you and I cannot within iDvd alone. This particular theme is highly limited on my own system as well.
I'm wondering if there might be a way to resize the movie in QT Pro but it will take me considerably more time to find this type of solution for a movie as opposed to a still image.
I won't have a solution for you today but I will keep this in mind.

  • Resize photo in Drop Zone

I have just completed my first non-PC DVD creation!!! I have run into a problem that I can't figure out, I have checked the discussion groups and I don;t believe anyone other than me has run into this: I grabbed some photos (3) from my iPhoto collection, dropped them into the "Drop Zone editor", and they are displayed on my menu, very nice, etc. However the photo is displayed so large that all you can see is my child's left eye and left forehead (for example). How can you re-adjust the photos that iDVD uses (either before pulling into iDVD or once in iDVD) so that that they are vaguely right size? I have tried left- and right-clicking eveywhere, no luck. I have tried taking one of the photos, amking a copy form iPhoto onto my desktop, resizing it down to 3 by 2 inches, adn then trying to use that "shrunk" photo - no change! Any ideas anyone..........

I used Photoshop to try different sizes until I could fit our logo just the way I wanted. The final image size that seems to work fine is 693w x 520h in pixels. Your image can be 693w but not all 520h will make it on. I had to position our logo which is roughly 260h about 1/3 of the way down from the top as the bottom part gets cut off. You need the extra white space on the bottom but not width wise.

  • Master Template Drop Zone Causes Frame Offset Problem

I created a template in Motion with two drop zones. When I use it in Final Cut as a master template, and drop in two video clips, the clips are offset about 4 frames from the originals. I can see this when I toggle the template's track on and off to see the underlying clips that got dropped in from my timeline. The cut points don't match up to what winds up in the template's dropzones for some reason.
This is a problem, because I'm using the template as a transition between full screen and a PIP-type effect.
The weird frame offset causes a visual glitch that I have to correct by adjusting the start/end points. This is extremely time consuming, as I have to apply the template to a huge number of clips.
I'm using the latest version of Final Cut Studio.

Just discovered that the frame offset increases the further I am into a clip.
I took a part from the beginning.. frame offset = 2 frames.
Took one closer to the end of a 4 minute clip.. frame offset = 14 frames.
The video is encoded in ProRes422 at 29.97 fps, and the Motion template is 29.97 also. Any ideas?

  • Difficulty positioning drop zone images

I have carefully and repeatedly read the sizing and positioning instructions for images in iDVD drop zones. I am just not "getting it". There must be more info. somewhere about putting predictability into this process. The photo does not appear in the desired size and position.

My apologies to the person I got this from—cannot find it now. But, OT, here's what works great:
    1) Open a new Appleworks (or Word) word processing document. I know this is unsophisticated, but this standard 8 1/2 x 11" document seems to be the key to the process.
    2) Set the document margins to very thin. like 1/10".
    3) Place (paste) your photo into the document.
    4) The portion of the picture that you want to show in the drop zone—place it at the top of the document and slightly to the right.
    5) Use the "create pdf" function within the print dialog box to create a pdf document.
    6) Drag the resulting pdf document into the drop zone well.
    7) Look at the results. In the original word processing document, adjust the photo size and position as desired. Then, make another pdf.
    8) Drag your adjusted pdf into the drop zone well.
As I said before, this worked great for me after spending a whole day trying to find a solution. I feel liberated. Thanks to the original author, whomever it may be.

  • Drop zone content fills entire screen for some reason.  Help!

Hi, everyone. I've used iDVD for years, but have not had this problem before. I'm trying to use the 4:3 template called "Projector". There is only one drop zone, which should show what the projector is playing. However, when I right click the area and "Fill with Content" (I want video playing there), it doesn't just fill the small square where it's supposed to. Instead, it just takes up the entire screen of the project, completely overlapping the template. In other words, I can't even see the Projector template anymore.
Has anyone else had this experience, or even better, have a solution to it?
    Thanks!

Actually, that's a perfectly acceptable way to add content to that drop zone. I've been doing it for years. With a single click on the video box (once "fill with content" is selected), you're even able to adjust where the video starts and ends. If you're just looking to load on general video from your iMovie project, it's a great shortcut to use.
I know the other method of loading content into the drop zone. But that didn't really answer my question as to why the entire screen was filling up with content. I've re-installed the software twice, which fixes it, but I'm just wondering why that problem keeps occurring over time.

  • Resizing clips in drop zones with motion 5.04

Can someone please help me resize clips in the dropzones.  When I drag the clip into the dropzone it show as too high up causing the head of my subject to be cut off as an example.  I do not see anywhere that shows a "fit" option in the inspector or anywhere else.  I purchase templates with dropzones in place.  Also when I try to resiize the handles that are showing, the complete drop zones resizes.
Is there some parameters I am supposed to using with the clip itself?

The "Adjust Item" tool is contextual, and will only help you move the image around inside of a Drop Zone.
If you need to "resize" the content of a Drop Zone, use the Scale parameter in the Inspector's "Image" section.
I happen to be doing this at the moment myself.

  • Scaling within a drop zone

    I'm working in MOTION 3.
I'm working with a template that has drop zones into which you're intended to place pictures or video.
When I drop the pictures in, they are too large...meaning parts of the picture are being cut off,
or are outside the parameters of the rectangular drop zone.
I want to scale the pictures down so they are completely visable in the drop zone, but I don't
want to change the overall size of the drop zone itself...I want the rectangular box (the drop zone)
    to remain the same size.
I know how to scale the drop zone itself, but not the image that I'm placing inside the drop zone.
Minimally, I need to be able to move the image I dropped into the drop zone around in there,
so I can see the most important part of the image.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

In Motion 4, you'd be able to use the Link behavior to make a scale adjustable template... ala: Mark's tutorial (thanks Mark!)...
With Motion 3, I'd say edit the template. You have the option to save it just for this use, or globally. I'd say make your adjustments on a use by use basis...

  • Moving Still Graphics in Motion Template: Drop Zones

I am new to this and it is probably a simple answer. I have a portrait JPG photo to add to a drop zone in a template. How do I adjust the photo only so that it will not cut off the top of the photo. I am using fit in the image properties. It works with stretch but that option distorts the photo and centre makes the photo selection even smaller within the drop zone. The photo is quite large. Do I have to reduce it's size first?
If I move the photo down with the selection tool it does not allow me to move the photo down without cutting off the rest of the photo outside the drop zone box. All I want to do is move the photo down so it fits within the drop zone so that I can see the bride and groom.

    hi,
what is the aspect ratio of the drop zone? if it doesnt match your photo then you are going to have to compromise on something. You might lose some picture either at the sides or top and bottom, or maybe you see some blank around the picure.
As Patrick says its a waste of power having a large picture if you are going to reduce its size and pop it in a frame. Further to this you might want to preflight your image to be the right ratio for your drop zone.
    Hope this helps

  • Creating a mask within a drop zone

    Hey,
Does anyone know if it is even possible to create a mask within a drop zone or the video assets so I can essentially cropping off the black bars in my 4:3 Letterbox video. Was shot on the Panasonic DVX100.
    Chris

    Hey,
I'm creating my chapter/scene selection index/menu and I am wanting to find a way to re-shape the mask so I can reveal more of a still on the drop zone. The way the mask is setup is it is cropping off too much of my frame. Whenever I adjust the media handles all that does is change the size of the drop zone which isn't what I want to do. I just want to drag more of the frame over.
Any idea how to do this? The manual does not help and I am trying to Google to find my answer. No luck so far.

  • Drop zone movie playback

i have a movie playing in the drop zone, which is about 1hour in actual length. is there a way to specify the start and end points of what is played in the menu/drop zone.
at the moment it only plays from the start of the movie, but i want it to playback footage at a certain point in the movie?? eg not from 0 sec - 30 sec, but 45sec - 1min
    thanks

    Hi Tarun Thind
Welcome to apple discussions. yes, you can control the start point of drop zone movies but the control /slider may be very limited. You may have better luck with the pro apps for more precise editing features.
    Help menu says the following:
Setting the duration of a movie in a drop zone
Movies that appear in drop zones have the same duration as the background movie of the menu, if there is one. You can change the duration of all drop zone movies and the background movie.
To change the duration of all the movies on the menu:
Click the Menu button and drag the Loop Duration slider to the number of seconds you want the movies to loop, up to the length of the longest movie.
Setting where background video begins and ends
When you use video as a menu's background, you can use the entire video or just a part of it. To use just a part of the video, you set where you want it to begin and end.
To specify the video you want to show:
Go to the menu that uses the background video you want to adjust and then click Menu.
Click the small triangle above the Loop Duration slider. (You only see the triangle when custom video is in the background well.)
The slider control becomes the Background Movie Start/End control, shown above, and the slider is split in half.
Move the left half of the slider until you see the part of the video that you want at the beginning.
Move the right half of the slider until you see the part of the video that you want at the end.
Click the triangle again to return to the Loop Duration slider.
    hope this is helpful
