Drop Zone Image Adjustment in iDVD '08

I use iDVD 6 for making slideshow DVDs of family functions to send out to my other family members. One of the features that I used in every one of my projects was the ability to drag around any image that you place in the Drop Zone that has been automatically cropped, so that you can pick which part of the image you want to be visible.
In iDVD '08, however, this feature has been removed. What's worse, some of the new themes (Modern, for instance) crop the majority of the images you place into the Drop Zone. I find virtually every new theme in iDVD '08 unusable because of the removal of this feature.
I tried using an old theme from iDVD 6, but I was also unable to adjust the location of my images in relation to the drop zone.
Am I just doing something wrong? In both the toturial vid and the manual, Apple makes no mention of adjusting an image once it's inside the Drop Zone.
In the meantime, I am reverting to iDVD 6. I don't understand why they would remove a feature that was so useful.

*Here's the whole explanation from iDVD Help:*
Repositioning an image or movie in a drop zone
When you drag a picture or movie into a drop zone, the aspect ratio of the image is preserved, but it is scaled larger or smaller to fill the drop zone. As a result, sometimes part of the image is cut off and does not appear in the drop zone. In this case, you can move the image to choose which portion is visible in the drop zone.
_To reposition an image or movie in a drop zone:_
1.) From the drop zone on the menu (not in the drop zone editor), click the image or movie and press Command.
2.) Drag the image until the part you want is visible in the drop zone.
Keep these things in mind as you position an image:
If you drag a narrow image to a drop zone, the image is scaled vertically, and you can move the image up or down only.
If you drag a wide image to a drop zone, the image is scaled horizontally, and you can move the image side to side only.
If you accidentally drag the image too far, you will remove it from the drop zone. (The cursor changes from a hand to a puff of smoke.) Choose Edit > Undo to restore the image to the drop zone.
Repositioning a movie in a drop zone is different from selecting which part of a movie shows in a drop zone (which allows you to select which frame of the movie is displayed in a drop zone). For more information, see Related Topics below.

  • Difficulty positioning drop zone images

I have carefully and repeatedly read the sizing and positioning instructions for images in iDVD drop zones. I am just not "getting it". There must be more info. somewhere about putting predictability into this process. The photo does not appear in the desired size and position.

My apologies to the person I got this from—cannot find it now. But, OT, here's what works great:
    1) Open a new Appleworks (or Word) word processing document. I know this is unsophisticated, but this standard 8 1/2 x 11" document seems to be the key to the process.
    2) Set the document margins to very thin. like 1/10".
    3) Place (paste) your photo into the document.
    4) The portion of the picture that you want to show in the drop zone—place it at the top of the document and slightly to the right.
    5) Use the "create pdf" function within the print dialog box to create a pdf document.
    6) Drag the resulting pdf document into the drop zone well.
    7) Look at the results. In the original word processing document, adjust the photo size and position as desired. Then, make another pdf.
    8) Drag your adjusted pdf into the drop zone well.
As I said before, this worked great for me after spending a whole day trying to find a solution. I feel liberated. Thanks to the original author, whomever it may be.

  • Drop Zone Image Parameters

Does anybody know how to find out the image parameters for any given menu template drop zone?
I am finding that some jpgs I use are getting cut off and in only showing half of it. I read that in iDVD 08 the resizing option was removed so if I could get the height x length dimensions needed would at least be a help until apple fixes this.
Note I am on a Mac Pro with iLife 08

  • Drop Zone images

Everytime I place a pic or an image on the drop zone it only shows a small portion. What size should the drop zone pics be? I have trie several differant dimensions with no luck.

    Hi
This is more difficult than it should be.
If You freez a frame in iMovie and use this. The menu size will not be the same
as the movie. Don't know why it is like this. But this is my experience.

In my books. 720 x 480 - never seen before - What can that be ?
Lennart Thelander: Yes, that's why I wrote square pixels, like a computer monitor.
    640x480 square pixels is 4:3.
NTSC on a TV is really 720x480 rectangular (narrow) pixels, which also is 4:3.
So if you want to import a still with square pixels, 640x480 is what you use.
PAL is 768x576 square pixels, or 720x576 rectangular (wide) pixels. Both are 4:3, too.

  • Smoke Patch Drop Zone Image disappears...

Greetings: I am new to DVD pro and using the smoke patch drop zone against a video background (HD1080). When I first stated I could see the smoke and the video asset it contained. Later, after simulation, the drop zone outline is there, but not the smoke image — just the title and the handles and dotted box outline the zone. Where did the image go? What to do?
    Thanks in advance...

  • Adjusting a still frame in a drop zone

In previous versions of iDVD, you could move the still image in a drop zone by clicking on it (mainly horizontally -centering an image). In iDVD 08, you can't click on the drop zone and adjust. Checked the help page but no mention. Any suggestions on how to move an image within a drop zone?
    thanks

Thanks for the two quick responses!! You gotta love the immediate assistance you receive on this site. Either I missed this on the idvd help option or they never posted it.

  • Image in drop zone not sharp

Using a DVD SP menu template, I have dropped images into button drop zones. The .jpg files when viewed in photoshop are much sharper than when they are seen in the DVD menu format, even though the images as button images are even smaller than when the image is viewed outside of DVD SP. The unsuarp image stays there when I burn a DVD and test on a television or TV screen too, so it's not a matter of how it looks in simulate.
Any ideas on why the drop zone images are not sharp / how to solve to problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Pamela
Have just had a go at this operation on a brand new project and I did not get any of the problems you mentioned both as buttons and drop zones, have you tried it out in a brand new project to see if you get the same results as before, also you could try saving your files as a TIFF from photoshop to see if that increases the quality of what you get from a jpeg.

  • Drop Zones Not Appearing

The drop zones on the main menu of the DVD do not appear. I open the Drop Zone editor and it has a box for the Menu, but not a box for the drop zone. However, the sub menus are the same theme and have drop menus. I have tried Command-I and click the box at the bottom, but nothing.
    Please help. Thank you.

That is so strange. I have drop zones on the above iDvd'08 theme that I can activate with a simple check mark or get rid of them by unchecking the same box.
If your software isn't allowing for such an option then I'd consider re-installing iDvd'08.
You do know that after you check or uncheck that tiny box at the foot of the inspector, that you then need to click on the screen which then activates or deactivates the drops zone/s. At least that's the way mine works. For example ....
Btw ... before you do any re-installing of this software, please try a separate user account and launch iDvd from the new account to see if this duplicates the very same behavior or not.
Good luck on this and I'll check back with you later. (Wife and I have a date).

  • Adjusting frame size for drop zones

I posted this question in the Final Cut Forum, but I thought this might be a good place to ask as well.
I exported a wide screen movie out of fce and plopped it on a drop zone on the main theme page in iDVD. The movie has that black band at the top like like it would if it was being played as a wide screen movie on your tv. It there a setting I can adjust to make that movie completely that drop zone?
    Thank you,
    Scott

I wish I had good news for you but I do not. I've been working for the last hour trying to find a solution for you and I cannot within iDvd alone. This particular theme is highly limited on my own system as well.
I'm wondering if there might be a way to resize the movie in QT Pro but it will take me considerably more time to find this type of solution for a movie as opposed to a still image.
I won't have a solution for you today but I will keep this in mind.

  • How do you resize a photo in an iDVD drop zone?

The themes in iDVD are virtually useless if you can't easily drag a photo into a drop zone and move and resize as necessary.  Using the method described in iDVD is ridiculously cumbersome but what's worse is that it doesn't work.
Does anyone have a suggestion for making this task easier?  Does anyone know of better software that would replace iDVD?
This problem has been around for years.  It's unbelievable that Apple allows the problem to continue.
    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the reply - I've just gotten around to playing with this some more and as you mentioned, I'm now creating a new image in Photoshop that repositions the image so that it places well in the iDVD template (soft frame in this case). Extra work, and it appears to be effective in the iDVD interface, but when I burned a test DVD the images were scaled differently in the final render to disk.
I'm not trying to do anything out of the ordinary here - just want to burn a DVD of my baby boy for the grandparents. This is precisely the type of use iLife is aimed at... But something as simple as putting a picture of my son on the DVD menu took the extra step of composing in Photoshop in order to have his head not cropped ridiculously. Now even that extra work is altered on the DVD.
I'm new to iDVD and might just need to work with it some more, but so far it just seems wrong and inconsistent with the rest of iLife to not have this flexibility.

  • Not scaling images in drop zone

    Hi,
For some reason when I drop an image into a drop zone in iDVD 6, it will not scale the image so a large chunk of the image is cropped off. Since the image I need to use has some text on it, I'm trying t resize it to fit in an external editor, but no luck as of yet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many, many thanks,
    David

    David,
I know I used to have the problem you described back in the iDVD 4 (or earlier) days, but I just did some more checking.
The article Selecting the portion of a movie or image that appears in the drop zone at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/5.0/en/258.html says (in part): When you drag a picture or movie into a drop zone, the aspect ratio of the image is preserved and it is scaled larger or smaller until the top, bottom, left, or right edge of the image meets the edge of the drop zone. You can move the image to choose which portion of the image is visible in the drop zone.
The article was written for iDVD 5 but when I 'fired up' iDVD 6 and tried some 5 megapixel images in the drop zones of several themes, everything worked as advertised in the article.
What theme are you having problems with?

  • Images disappear from drop zones

I'm using the "Bands" template, and I'm adding a photo to 3 different drop zones: the first one (the animated one) works fine. But when I add a photo for background on either the menu or "extras" page, it goes in fine, turns black and white and has the shading around the top edge, but when I click on another page in the DVD and back to these two pages, the image is gone and it again says "Drag Photos or Movies Here". Any ideas? I'm using 7.0.4, don't have any compelling reason to upgrade to 7.1 unless this bug is fixed there...

    Hi George
Sorry to hear you are having issues with iDvd regarding background and drop zones not staying with the images or photos you picked. I just tried the very same thing you described above running iDvd 7.0.4 on a Dual G5 2.0 Ghz and I cannot duplicate this issue. Mine runs fine and exactly as expected. All choices remain in place. So I'm not exactly sure what's going on with your own particular configuration. But like you I don't recommend updating unless this issue is first addressed in the next update. My feeling is that it won't be. What you may want to do if you haven't already is dispose of the plist for iDvd. Go to your HOME folder > Library > Preferences >
    com.apple.iDvd.plist
Drag and drop this file to the trash or to the desktop and relaunch iDvd.
Come on back if this fails to help. Please also let us know exactly how much available hard drive space is remaining on the boot volume (your main HDD). You may also want to repair permissions at this time from apple's disk utility.
    Good luck!

  • Drop Zones shows correct image but previews using old photo with same name

Everyday I do my customer DVD's in the same format. I capture, then edit, take eight screen shots (as jpeg's) to use in iDVD for the title screen. Then after I have checked the completed DVD I delete the Jpeg's and the iDVD project. I also delete the iMovie project as I use a standard template with promo at the start and credits at the end.
After upgrading to iDVD 6 (i did upgrade iMovie 5 to 6 but had to go back because of bugs) I have noticed that when I add my jpeg's to the drop zones they appear correct but the preview in the background shows another jpeg. Looks like a previous jpeg used for another project that I have since deleted.
Has anyone else had this problem. I found that if I go back and rename the latest images I want to use (i normally just use a generic name like c1, c2, c3 etc) it works fine until now. But I am sure this problem will resurface with time even using full names.

    All,
    I had the same issue.
In my case, Blob Cache was enabled for the web application in which the image issue was occuring.
I cleared blob cache, and after doing a hard refresh of my browser, the correct image was then displayed.
To clear blob cache, do the following:
    Navigate to:
    http://yourwebapp:port/yoursite/_layouts/objectcachesettings.aspx
Select:  "Object Cache Flush"  and  "Force all servers in the farm to flush their object cache" check boxes
    Click the OK button
    Hope this helps.

  • Images won't appear in Drop Zones

This has been bugging me for a while now. I am trying to create an easy to use/burn presentation platform for a recent group trip I went on. I'd like to eventually be able to burn copies to a DVD so that others may have a copy of our adventure. At first I was going to just create a slideshow using iDVD, when I came into these troubles I switched to using iMovie to create a slideshow with the music I want and the transitions I want. That still leaves the embellishment portion of it. I don't want the menus to look boring.
What I am finding to be troublesome is that I try to import images from iPhoto into iDVD and they some times, more often than not, will not appear in the drop zones on the larger screen. They will show in the editor but not above. I've tried changing themes, same thing. I have also tried to bypass iPhoto by importing the images I want into the drop zones by using the File>Import>Image... route.
Please, any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
    I'm running on a Mac OS X v10.6.8 with 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
    The iDVD is version 7.1.1

hi there, I am confused when you stated you cant "import images from iPhoto into iDVD"  .
The way I get photos into the drop zones is to drag the photos from the media browser on the right hand side of the screen. I don't "import" .. unless I'm misinterpreting the use of that term. here is my idvd project and note on the bottom right hand side I've clicked Media.  Then I click Photos on the top and it shows me all my photos. Thats where I drag and drop FROM.
Note you can also drag and drop photos from a finder window. The only time I have issues is if my photo is a landscape and I'm trying to stick it into a box that is portrait and vice-versa.
    does this help at all?

  • Moving an image in a drop zone

Is there any way of moving an image in a drop zone? at the moment its cropping the top half of a still image?

You can customize the shape, size, and position of a button in any menu but not drop zones unfortunately. In order to do this you'd need to modify the app itself. Most iLife users aren't up to such a task.
Might be easier to simply start with DvdSP (part of Apple's FCS 2). As complicated as DVDSP is, I believe it may be easier to learn apple's pro apps, as opposed to the actual hack for such modifications within iDvd.
