Dropouts on ethernet

Hi, I use love film instant on a wired connection. I have been having dropouts, when the speed drops to about 1meg for a while then shoots back up. It interferes with the film playback. My speeds are high 50s and high teens. I don't get this wirelessly. I have read somewhere, perhaps here, there is an issue with the HH. Any help would be much appreciated. Adam
Solved!
Go to Solution.

In that case, you could try a factory reset of the HH3,
also try plugging the cable into another port on the HH3,
also try a different ethernet cable.

About a month ago, my link started playing up.
about 2 or 3 times an hour it loss sync or something and we lost the Internet for about 1 or 2 minutes
and about every 2 or 3 hours the home hub reboots.
has anyone got any ideas on how to sorting it out?
    Roger

Are you experiencing these dropouts via Ethernet or via Wireless? You could try a factory reset of the hub, on the back of the hub there is a pinhole where you stick a pen in and push to reset it back to default settings.

  • Intemittent dropouts connecting through NBN Australia Skyedge2 satellite modem, via Ethernet is fine, but Airport express wireless is unreliable!

Intermittent dropouts connecting to NBN Australia Skyedge2 satellite modem. Via Ethernet is fine, but Airport Express wireless is unreliable! In particular https and getting mail. This problem did not occur on previous Optus satellite AGBG satellite system. Is there a different mode required for AAE?

I continue to have the problem with dropouts to satellite internet via airport express. My isp has loaned me a Linksys (Cisco) E1200 wireless router which I have connected and it works flawlessly. Maybe my AEx is faulty?

I have bought a new airport express and using it with my macbook (iTunes 10.2.2). I have joined an existing wireless network for internet in my home and with that i am trying to play the music via itunes but there is audio dropouts every 60 secs or so. I am using a set of speakers from kenwood connected to the airport express. The operating system on my macbook is mac os X 10.5.8. i am sure it is not a problem of streaming music online because i have even tried playing music which are stored in my macbook.
Is there any problem with the setting in itunes or quicktime ? Kindly reply...... I am waiting for your valuable suggestion.
Thank you a lot in advance.

I am shocked to have found this same AX audio dropout problem starting TODAY, every few seconds the audio just drops for a couple seconds and then resumes:  Latest software versions of everything.  No iPad, iPhone or Touch.  Internet hardwired to D-Link DES1105 (1000baseT Switch) hardwired to new 80211N AX, AX optical to stereo, AX Wi-Fi internet to basic 1st-gen MacBook operating at 80211G, and an older 'G' AX extender at the far end of the house, away from all this.  The MacBook streaming iTunes is usually 12 feet from AX.  I've used this setup for years of trouble-free AirTunes / Airplay until today.  Today I also found 2 very reliable fixes and 1 way to force a dropout, but first, I read some posts and tried ALL following settings one-at-a-time and restored them ALL because NONE of them helped:  Turned off IPV6.  Streamed to multiple speakers 'Computer' and 'AX' (restored to just AX).  Turned off 'Ask to Join new (WiFi) Networks'.  Turned off Bluetooth (can't live without Magic Trackpad, so glad that wasn't it).  Here's my discoveries:  Lo and behold, each time I click the Airport icon in the Menu (you know it shows you've got 4 bars from AX) when the status switches to 'Looking for Networks' for a second it CAUSES the AX audio to drop out for a couple seconds (it never did that before today.)  iTunes still playing, streaming, AX laser still lit, but the 'PCM' light on stereo and the sound GOES OUT EVERY time I click the Airport icon in the menubar, just like the regular, annoying dropouts.  So, to reduce traffic I quit Safari (3 tabs, no streaming, just Gmail, Google, and Netflix browsing).  Lo and behold, the dropouts stopped altogether.  No other Web apps going (not iTunes Store, Genius, Ping, nothing), so I launched Chrome to the same 3 tabs and the dropouts HAVE NOT RETURNED.  That's right, not only did simply QUITTING SAFARI cure it, and Chrome doesn't contribute to it, but I can demonstrate it just by forcing my Airport to re-scan.  Works for me, written using Chrome.  The other reliable fix is to hardwire MacBook to the Switch.  This is obviously not ideal, but Airplay audio doesn't drop out over Ethernet.  Also, in all my tests, it made no difference whether iTunes did the streaming, or Airfoil did.

  • Home Hub 3: ethernet & wireless connections from i...

I have a perplexing problem whereby the functionality I get from my Home Hub 3 is different depending on whether my brand new iMac computer running MacOS 10.7.2 is connected wired (i.e. using ethernet) or via wireless.
The functionality difference has shown itself to me in the two scenarios below. It's a problem to me because the problems occur when the iMac is connected via ethernet and I want to use ethernet to connect my iMac. If the wireless connection to the iMac was as reliable as everything else on my network (mac laptops also running 10.7.2, windows 7 laptops, iphones, ipads etc) I would be content to use wireless. However, the iMac frequently drops the signal requiring a wireless on/off to get it back. I'm tending to hold the iMac responsible for this and await an Apple fix, although having changed the security setting on the Home Hub 3 to WPA2 only and set the channel to channel 4, the wireless dropouts are much less frequent, without these changes it drops the signal every few minutes. Any input on this would be gratefully received.
I want wired for connection reliability (and speed), but I have a two situations where I get more functionality out of my network if the iMac is connected via wireless. A classic case of being caught between two stools.
    Scenario 1
I have a WD MyBook Live NAS drive attached to the Home Hob 3 via ethernet with the intention of using it as a Time Machine backup disc for the iMac and to be a shared drive for our macbook and windows laptops. All seems fine at first with the iMac connected via ethernet, the browser can see the NAS drive and set it up etc, but Time Machine will only see the WD MyBook Live if wireless is switched on.
    Scenario 2
I have an HP 5510 wireless printer and set it up and HP software installed on the iMac. With the iMac connected to the Home Hub 3 via ethernet printing is fine, however, scanning doesn't work, the scanner and iMac cant see each other. With wireless scanning is fine as well as printing.
I haven't wanted to mess with it all any more, Ive spent hours going through the HP software, the WD software, the router as well as the network preferences on the iMac. It's not making make sense. Anybody who knows what's going on here would be a genius in my book!

Hi mja, Apologies but I'm not the expert you're looking for, but a couple of my experiences may be of interest. I've got a WD my book running as a networked back up drive. A while back there was an update for a "USB" connected hard drive (which mine is definitely not) - this confused my PC -- wouldn't let it close down amongst many other symptoms --with great difficuly managed to disable the driver and sanity was restored. The other problem involved a print server that has a static IP address -------- my HH3 sometimes gives that IP address to other items on my network --------- this stops the printer working. Apologies if this post is not formatted correctly, I'm using an iPad --- not by choice,, All the best Michael

  • OS X 10.5.x AirPort Dropout Issue - Problem with Apple

I am posting this as a new topic in the hope that Apple will take urgent action to resolve these AirPort dropout issues with OS X 10.5.x.
Yesterday, I installed setup a new 40GB partition on my firewire drive and installed OS X 10.5.2 (from my original installation dvd) and did all updates (via Software Update) to arrive at an up-to-date OS X 10.5.5. Only stock standard OS X 10.5.5 installed now.
Some interesting observations along the way:
    1. After installing 10.5.2 the AirPort network kept dropping out or stalling.
    2. Installed following updates:
    - AirPort Utility (5.3.2)
    - QuickTime (7.5.5)
    - iLife Support (8.3)
    - iTunes (8.0)
    - Remote Desktop Client Update (3.2.2)
    - Java For Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1 (1.0)
I did not update to OS X 10.5.5 at this time.
    3. Restarted and AirPort network stable and fast.
    4. Ran Software Update again - installed:
    - Front Row Update (2.1.6)
    - Mac OS X Update Combined (10.5.5)
    5. Restarted and AirPort network stable and fast.
    6. Ran Software Update again - all software up to date.
    7. Repaired permissions with Disk Utility.
Everything has been going fine with connections to the internet with Safari - until this morning.
My 'clean' OS X 10.5.5 installation is now suffering from the same AirPort network dropouts - no 3rd party applications installed. Ran OK for a day, but after being shutdown for 5 or 6 hours, the problem arose following startup this morning.
    Conclusion:
    1. AirPort problem with OS X 10.5.x; or
    2. AirPort problem with new 17" MBP; or
    3. Problem with AEB 802.11n (gagabit ethernet); or
    4. Problem with DSL modem or ISP connection.
Comments on item 1 - think I have conclusively eliminated 3rd party software.
Comment on item 2 - no problems indicated by TechTool Delux or TechTool Pro 4; works OK via ethernet connection.
Comment on item 3 - previously did factory reset and textbook setup on AEB. Connection via AEB 802.11g relay and remote work fine.
Comment on item 4 - fact that other computers connect OK and this computer can connect OK via ethernet rules out problems with DSL modem and ISP.
Draw your own conclusions, but I am now certain the problem is clearly with Apple.

    Hello,
    looks same to me.
    the log says:
kernel AirPort: Link Down on en1
kernel unable to collect channel list from hal;(...)
my AEB is just 2 ms away from the MacBookPro, the AEB is brand new.
In the moment I have an ethernet cable going from the router through the house, because the AEB is unrelyable. I used all the tricks people posted and said it would solve the problem, which is not the case for me. Dropouts just continue.
With the old ufo-style extreme there was no problem at all.
So please Airport developers put effort to solve the problem and suffering of users.
    thanks

  • Built in ethernet not showing in network preferences

A friend has been experiencing random dropouts via airport, as a workaround she has been using a direct cable to the adsl router from time to time. Now all of a sudden she cannot see the ethernet anymore.
In network preferences ethernet is not displayed in the network status, regardless of whether a cable is inserted or not.
About this mac lists an ethernet adaptor and ethernet is enabled in the network port configurations in the preferences.
Dis/enabling the ethernet in network port configurations has no effect neither does repair disk permissions.
The machine is less than a year old, fully updated and still under warranty, anything else she can try?

    did you fixed the problem?
i am having something like you where the ethernet worked for a while and then it was greyed out... and i went as far as formating my computer and reinstalling os x... but now the computer thinnks i don't have a ethernet card...

  • Hooking up an iMac by ethernet?

So I have a 2011 27" iMac with less-than-stellar WiFi (constant dropouts, amongst other things), and after a few trips into the Apple Store for maintenance, they determined that it's the $900 logic board that's faulty. I've since bought a Retina MBP to replace it, and it's great for most things. However playing most games on it seems to really tax the fans, and watching movies on it just isn't the same as it was on my iMac.
So I'm looking into ways of getting my iMac back into action alongside the MBP, and came across the AirPort Express which I think might suit my needs. I just need to know if it can do what I'm thinking. Can I connect the AE to my home WiFi network, then hook my iMac up to one of the ethernet ports of the AE and use that to connect my iMac to the internet? And if I do that will I be able to use things like AirDrop and/or access my MacBook's files from the iMac?
    Thanks!

    SakuRedux wrote:

    Yes.
However, I fail to understand how you intend to use your iMac if its logic board has already been determined to be faulty. If using its Ethernet port alleviates the Wi-Fi problem you describe it will remain a serviceable machine, within that limitation. AirDrop requires Wi-Fi to be operative. If it is not, you can still access the iMac's files over the network using File and / or Screen Sharing.

  • Music Streaming Dropouts

I have started getting extended dropouts during music streaming from iMac to Apple TV. It starts off as a glitchy sound until it finally goes quiet. It will then start back up about 20 seconds where if left off. Appears to be happening in about one minute intervals. I have rebooted wireless router, Apple TV and iMac.

as sir winston suggested, have you checked for _*wireless interference*_ ?
download iStumbler (may not work on 10.6) or AirRadar (it has a trial period) and note the channels other networks in your vicinity are broadcasting on. change the channel(s) of your network as far away as possible from those.
FWIW, i have hardwired most of my equipment to my TC. where physical ethernet cables are no option (due to location), i use *powerline adapters* _*such as these*_.

  • Dolby Digital dropouts on Apple TV

I have the latest model ATV connected via HDMI to an Arcam receiver which can decode Dolby Digital via that cable. The ATV is connected to my network via ethernet but I get regular dropouts of DD sound – the sound disappears for a second or two and the amp shows a message '3/2.1 - EX off'.
This happens on Streaming movies over Netflix or playing iTunes content from my mac.
The file is not at fault as replaying it will often have the sound dropping out at different points in the movie and earlier dropouts will usually play normally. Itunes was downloading in the background but would this affect replaying of a movie file or the straeming of a netflix movie?

Probably not the case but do check all you speaker cables are secured properly - I once had random dropouts and one of the the centre speaker cables had come partially loose and a few strands were intermittently shorting with the counterpart causing the amp to shut down audio momentarily.
Personally I'd try a different HDMI input or cable if the Arcam has a separate input.

  • Itunes dropout due to TimeMachine

I have been having some issues with TimeMachine and iTunes on my MBP - i am pretty sure this is not an Airtunes issue.. but sometimes when TimeMachine runs itunes stops playing for a few seconds.. if i turn TM off.. this does not happen.. i am moving ALL my three Airport Express to cable and i have just brought an Airport Extreme to try and get round this.. i will test with wired throughout and with WiFi on both available bandwidths... i get the dropout even when playing to directly connected speakers
    can one 'Nice" TM?
Just had another few dropouts... this time with NO wifi connected at all.. gigabit ethernet to TM share on SL server - local hard wired audio and a second send to an Airport over ethernet (only - no wifi turned on).. the moment i turn off TM the dropouts stop... turn it on - they start again... not so happy about that.
Can i script TM backups to come on when machine is NOT being used? kinda defeats the great facility of TM - but if my audio gets messed up the backup can wait.

never tried nicing TM. you can of course do it but I'm quite certain it won't help here. don't know how to script TM running only when the computer is not in use. sounds tricky. you can change TM schedule to run less frequently using TimeMachine Editor.
    http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/
you can also do it from terminal by altering the TM scheduling launch daemon.

  • Changing channel on AE when in client mode to avoid audio dropouts with itu

I am getting audio dropouts 7 to 8 seconds into a song consistently on my mac book which is wirelessly connected to g5 via lynksys router. There is some traffic on my current channel, but I can't figure out how to change the channel in client mode I can only change it own independent network. Will this even help? or am I asking too much? Do I even need to lynksys because both macs have airport built in? G5 seems to work fine with itunes connected to 3 airports it's when I play itunes from mac book that I get the dropouts.

Yes, you can take advantage of OS X's Internet Sharing feature ...
To setup for Internet Sharing (Wired to Wireless):
    Enable Software Firewall - G5
System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
o Click Stop to start the software firewall
    Setup the Network
    Cable Modem > (Ethernet cable) > \[Ethernet port] G5 > (wireless) > wireless clients
    Setup Port Order - G5
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
o Verify that "AirPort" and "Built-In Ethernet" are enabled.
o Verify that "Built-In Ethernet" is at the top of the list, followed by "AirPort".
    o Click "Apply Now."
Configure the Internet Connection - G5
    System Preferences > Network > Show > Built-In Ethernet > TCP/IP
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
o Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Enable Internet Sharing - G5
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet
o Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
o To computers using: AirPort (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    o AirPort Options
oo Network Name: <anything you want>
    oo Channel: Automatic
oo Enable encryption (using WEP) (optional)
    oo Password: (optional)
    oo Confirm Password: (optional)
    oo WEP Key Length: (optional)
    oo Click OK
    o Click Start

  • Recording dropouts, silences and stops

Hi all. I'm really becoming crazy for a problem with my AA3. I would like to use my HP Notebook (Core 2 duo, 2 GB DDR2, Realtek HD Audio, Nvidia 8400M GS, Vista Home Premium 32 bit) for multitrack recording but i can't because the record contains lots of dropouts in the audio, random seconds of silence here and there. Sometimes the record completly stops, timeline goes on, and transport cursor too, but not the wave writing.
I have disabled all the unneccessary things like Aero, desktop composition, net cards (ethernet, wireless, modems) and in fact the DPC Latency Checker show me an acceptable value for a Vista system (always green, min 50 max 300 us, never red spikes). But problems don't stops.
Vista are costantly updated and the hardware too with latest drivers from the HP site. I try to install latest audio drivers from Realtek directly too, but without results.
If i record with another software (like Nero Wave Editor, or Sound Recorder of Windows) i can hear little clicks here and there, but not dropouts and entire seconds of silence like in AA3.. of course i have an issue in the hardware/operating system. But what?
So i'm looking for a hint, or something to investigate, a help of any kind...
    Hi.

Have you tried recording to an external hard drive, usb or firewire? Many laptops seem to have 'issues' with audio and on-board hard drive related firmware.
Also, I would be wary of some of the updated Realtek drivers, as it seems that laptop manufacturers rely on dedicated, tweaked versions. With my Acer machine, the Realtek-sourced drivers didn't integrate with the audio-related displays of things like loudness settings or the function keys. Some later drivers made things worse. A later "earlier version than the latest Realtek" driver from Acer helped.
Here I found that removing the Acer "helper" software made a huge improvement to the audio performance, but I gather from other forums that people with different Acer models actually had to do the opposite and install some Acer-specific software.
Maybe HP is struggling with all this as well and maybe the "Tools" would help?

  • Airtunes dropouts - AE firmware 6.3 / WPA2 personal network

I finally managed to set up a proper airtuning of my Airport Express (AE) without having the regular streaming dropouts I used to have before (happening a few minutes after every hard/soft reset of my AE, AE still showing solid green light but suddenly not pingable anymore, iTunes stopping the playing, airport channel name displayed in italic at the bottom right of iTunes).
I think I found a solution (further testing required but so far much better) and would like to share my story for the eventual benefit of others. Since I am convinced there might be other reasons than the one I found to such a problem, I will try to carefully describe my network/systems settings.
    > My network/systems:
. ADSL/WiFi router Xavi 7868r 54 Mbps configured for mac filtering, no ssid broadcasting, wpa2 personal auth/encrypt using 64 ascii psk, dhcp with fixed ip adressing for my AE
. MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS X (10.4.8) with iTunes 7.0.2 (15) connected to the network through Airport Extreme
. Airport Express with latest firmware (6.3) and regular speakers directly connected to it through audio jack
    > My attends to narrow down the problem (OK means dropouts solved, NOK means dropouts not solved):
. putting all my network elements closer to each other (half a meter away from each other) -> NOK
. connecting my Macbook through Ethernet instead of WiFi -> NOK
. disconnect my DECT phone standing close the WiFi router -> NOK
. monitoring of neightbouring WiFi networks -> NOK (I have the strongest signal, almost 100% of signal level)
. checking interference robustness boxes on AE and my laptop -> NOK
. broadcasting my WiFi SSID -> NOK
. turn my WiFi security setting off (i.e. open network without even a WEP) -> OK
. move to WEP 128 security -> OK
    . move to WPA2 security -> NOK
. downgrade AE firmware to the previous one (6.1.1) -> OK
So I finally have my AE airtuning working without these sudden dropouts and without any concession regarding the security of my network (WPA2 personal).
Link for AE firmware 6.1.1 download: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportexpressfirmware611formacosx.html
Hope it will help some people getting crazy around. Anyway, thanks for all the ones who posted messages on related issues since they surely helped me in some way. Will try to answer to your eventual questions as well.

So let me be sure what you're saying. You had fairly new AE with V6.3 on it and you downgraded to 6.1.1? I'm a little nervous to try this, but the drop-outs are killing me. I had an older AE that finally died. I think it probably was running 6.1.1 and I hardly ever experienced any problems with it. So maybe you have found the solution, but wouldn't you think Apple would pick up on this and fix whatever is wrong with 6.3? Go figure!

  • Airport Express Failure Caused by Ethernet Switch

I was baffled for a while with frequent dropouts of one of my Airport Express units.  This one receives wireless from an Airport Extreme, then I connect its ethernet port to a gigabit switch which provides hardwire connections for my television, Blu-Ray, and Dish Network reciever.  I also use its audio port for AirPlay music to my stereo.
This configuration worked flawlessly for a long time.  Then it suddenly dropped out.  Timing coincided with the release of 7.6 AirPort firmware, and iTunes 10.5.1 ... so naturally I blamed Apple, downgraded the software, and still had the problem.
The bigest clue came when I switched this Aiport Express with another one that had been working flawlessly in another room.  It had te same symptoms. Conclusion:  It wasn't the Apple hardware!
I unplugged the audio jack and ethernet cable.  Suddenly the Airport Express was visible to my network.  Next step change the CAT5/6 cable.  That's when I discovered that my ethernet switch was blinking abnormally.  So I removed its power.  Upon restart/reset everything has been working normally for the last three days!
So the lesson learned is that the Airport Express is sensitive to the downstream devices connected to its ethernet port.  I hope this can help someone with troubleshooting in the future. Dont panic!  Check your cables and reset your devices.

I did initially leave it all to do its own thing and the new Airport Utility picture layout appeared to show it all connected up... but that would only last a minute or two before we noticed that the wifi was just gone (the pictures in Utility would change to yellow triangles and say the devices were no longer available.)
Sorry, but I cannot duplicate this error.
When you connect devices using Ethernet, AirPort Utility will display a solid line between the devices.  A dotted line is displayed if the devices are connecting using wireless.
