Dropped CPU...now computer won't come on.

I had a problem with the laptop with the power connector. After leaving a message on the message board and getting the answer I needed. I replaced the power jack to a updated one. While cleaning the CPU I dropped it on the floor. I picked it up and didn't notice anything wrong. No pins were bent or anything. I proceded to put it all back together being careful not to harm anything else. I put it back in the same direction as it was. All ribbions and plugs are ok. When I plugged it up I was so happy to see all lights come on. The power button, the three lights in the front and the fans all come on, then the fans go off as they always do but nothing else. The screen is blank and the computer wont start. I took everything back apart and all looks good but still no computer. Please help!!
Kudos! Thanks!

Have you tried resetting the System Management Controller? That is a good first step for power related issues such as this.
You may want to consider getting a new battery as well. Apple sells them on the store for about $129, and other users have reported being able to purchase 3rd party batteries for $20-30 on eBay.
Best of luck.

I spilled a little bit of soda on my keyboard ( more like big drops) and my computer won't turn on but it will still charge.  After i spilled it it kept trying to turn on and off by itself until i finally just shut it down.  Today i tried to turn it back on ( i spilled it last night) and now it won't turn on but when i plug it in the orange light comes on so it still charges.

TBF: You may have been lucky enough not to cripple your MBP immediately with your spill, but a spill such as you describe will have left obvious traces if you ever need to take your machine in for a repair of any kind. And as soon as evidence of the spill is found, any chance of the necessary repairs being performed under warranty will be gone.
Taking the machine in now to be cleaned and have the greasy parts replaced will be expensive, but doing so may save whatever remains of your warranty. For a price, Apple will restore the machine to like-new condition, and at the very least, you will then have a 90-day repair warranty on it. If you have significantly more time than that remaining on your original one-year warranty, and especially if you've bought the extended AppleCare Protection Plan, it would probably be worth taking the machine in to a Genius Bar for a look-over. Ask whether, if you have Apple clean and repair the machine now, your new-computer warranty and AppleCare plan will be reinstated afterward or whether all you'll have is the short repair warranty from now on. If the spill will negate your warranty and AppleCare even if you have Apple clean it, then the cleaning probably isn't worth paying for. But if paying for the cleaning will get your warranty and AppleCare reinstated, it may be worth doing.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition (if running 10.7 or later) by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime.

    Try this First...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...

  • My Internet was messing up so I turned it off and on. It still wouldn't work so I turned my iPhone off and now it won't come back on. What can I do to fix it?

I was trying to fix the internet on my iPhone so I turned it off and back on, then it still wouldn't work so I i turned my iPhone off and now it won't turn back on. Now when it's plugged into the wall or the computer the Apple Logo comes up for about 6 seconds and turns off, then back on for another 6 seconds then turns off again and it just repeats, and it really frustrates me. What can I do to fix it?

I had a similar issue with my phone.....it just shut off and wouldn't come back on even thought it was charged.  My daughter toggled the mute switch several times and then she pressed and held down the home and lock buttons.  It worked......would be worth a shot.

  • Updated OS to 10.5.7, now computer won't start properly...

Updated to OS 10.5.7 three days ago. After installation, system prompted restart (as usual). I clicked "restart", system properly shut down, then began to restart, then was stuck in restart mode for 3 hours! Gray screen with apple icon appeared, along with circling lines indicating it was "thinking" (I guess), then finally it just shut off. Now, it won't restart at all, just goes to gray screen for a few minutes, then goes black. Tried restarting from the system disk (10.5) which came with the computer, but I then get an alert saying it can't restore software because it can't find 10.4 or newer on the system. It shows my computer, with 10.5.7 on the startup disk menu, but selecting it and restarting throws me back into the gray screen/shut down loop.

Try starting in a different account or Safe Mode. Other issues have been related to font problems. You can test for this if things work in Safe Mode. A different account will check if it is something specific to your account.

Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair. In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some other caches to the trash. It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.
By the way, did you repair permissions with Disk Utility before and after doing hte update?

  • HT4623 My ipad keeps crashing & now it won't come back on, just comes up to connect to itunes. Did that and tried a restore but just keeps comin up an unknown error, help please, I have so much on my ipad.

My ipad keeps crashing and this time it won't come back on it just keeps telling me to connect to itunes which I did and it just keeps telling me it can't restore this ipad because an error has occured! Really need help please?

If it keeps coming up with an unknown error - no error code given - try another computer. If that doesn't work, it's time to take it to an Apple Store or an authorized service center to have the device evaluated.

  • I reset my iPod after it froze now it won't come back on...

I was listening to the iPod hit play and it froze. I held the center and menu button to reset it now the computer won't read it, I can't get it to play...what can i do besides burying it...

    cigxmeda,
If there is absolutely no response or screen display on your iPod after you reset it, try the following:
    1. Charge the iPod for 4 hours.
    2. After charging, disconnect the iPod from the charger and do not attempt to do anything to it for 24 hours.
    3. After 24 hours, connect it to your computer and see if the iPod gets recognized.
    4. If it is recognized by your computer, do a restore on the iPod.
This is an old trick that has worked for some. I hope it works for you!

  • Mountain Lion update, and now computer won't start up?

Writing this for a friend, as his computer is inop at the moment.  Hence this message.
He has a new 27" iMac.  He upgraded to Mountain Lion a few weeks ago, and then had intermittent problems with apps unexpectantly shutting down.
Now he did a ML update this morning, and his computer won't start up.  It gets to the point of the Apple logo coming up, a progress bar, and then the spinning wheel, but then shuts itself down right afterwards.
A safe boot yields the exact same result.
Any thoughts out there on what he could try to get it up and running again?
Thanks much for any and all help.

Thank you for the fast response.
He was able to get into Disk Utility with the Command and R keys, but when he tried verifying the disk, in red it said 'Invalid Node Structure, volume could not be verified completely'.
He went ahead and verified it anyway, then proceeded to repair it.  Howver, it stopped repairing, said it cannot repair, and that he should back up files and reformat the disk.
How can he back up his files?  He cannot see a way to do it.  Is there anything else he can do besides having to reformat the disk?
This is his first Mac (after much prompting from me to go Mac), and he's afraid he's now lost everything on there.

  • Monitor/Computer won't come on?

I have an iMac (self contained) computer. Yesterday I moved the iMac to another room, the computer worked fien, but I decided to move it back to its original location. I didn't plug it back in last night ... I waited until this morning to plug it in and turn it on. But when I did, the monitor wouldn't come on. The little pulsing white light (i.e. the heartbeat) in the bottom right corner pulses, but the monitor itself won't come on. It doesn't do anything ... it just stays black. It there something I can do?
    Help! Thanks!
