Dropped frame Errar on one project keep coming up

I do a play back in my sequence and I get right away
a dropped frame error that is anoying.
I have restarted the computer, have no other sequences open and this project is on a Lecie external firewire drive with lots of space.
3 gigs of ram too on my dual 2.0 turbo G5.

This is playback thru the viewer on FCP.
Media is DV and has been placed on the video track in a sequence.
I push the space bar for play and it gives me this message.
file is on a Lacie drive connected by 800 fire wire.
Not much on the drive.

If it happens again the make sure that you aren't suppressing website colors.
Make sure that you allow pages to choose their colors and that you haven't enabled High Contrast in the Accessibility settings.

How to overcome "dropped frame" issues on my project

Hey reader,
I have a MacBook Pro 2.4GHz with 250GB hd (85GB free just now) running 10.4.11, FCE HD 3.5 (and QT 7.5.5) and using a Sony Handycam DCR-HC96 (which is works BEAUTIFULLY with iMovie 08 and 6 and is always used with Sony tapes) and I am not able to "capture" the tape content to my MacBook Pro because of the "dropped frame" issue.
The camera is connected to the external hard drive chain via Firewire cable to the MacBook Pro and I was trying to capture to the internal hard drive. I am in the UK and am still struggling to get my head around the different frame rates but initially I got the dreaded "dropped frames were encountered during the last capture attempt" and it just wouldn't work, so I unselected the report dropped frames tab and abort capture in User Preferences as was suggested on here.
Now I get "Capture encountered a problem reading data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved" but the tape is fine (heads are also clean) as I had to (under time pressure, me) use iMovieHD 6 instead and it worked like a CHARM.
What can I do to use this software?
I KNOW I can import the iMovie footage but the disadvantage is the eternal rendering, I guess. I only ever used it once (because of its difficulties) and that was for pre-existing footage from iMovie and it was OK if not perfect. Just had to have a few hours extra for the constant rendering in preview...
Should I try to capture to one of the external hard drives? I read that the internal might be a problem as it is busy with the operating system jobs.

I got some dropped frames last night and posted this before noticing your post:
There can be a number of reasons for getting dropped frames during capture.
Yesterday I videoed a relative's wedding (in HDV) and on getting home late I captured the footage into FCP 6.0.3 only to find in a couple of places I got an abort on dropped frames.
This morning I decided to recapture and did so without a single dropped frame.
Why ? ......... there are several possibilities.
It could be that there was some physical problem with the tape or camera heads but I believe it was most likely caused by my camera's power supply.
Last night I used the battery whilst this morning I plugged in the power connector.
I feel that this provided a more constant supply of full power and helped prevent frames from being dropped. (The fact I was using FCP is immaterial as the dropped frames would almost certainly have also occurred in FCE).
From now on I will always use the power connector during transfer to and from the camera.

Problems working with non drop and drop frame DVCPRO HD material in project

I am having playback problems with my non drop frame HDV material. It stutters.
All of our projects up to this point have been shot in drop frame. During our last shoot however the Bcam was recorded in non drop. I loaded both the non drop bcam tapes as non drop and the drop frame Acam tapes as drop. All of the drop frame Acam material plays back fine in the source viewer and the timeline. The non drop Bcam material seems to randomly stutter in the source viewer, or causes the system to serve a "dropped frames warning" in the timeline.
Is there a bug with fcp 5.1.2 about mixing non drop and drop frame material in a project. Or is this not possible? They are the same frame rate.
I have exported the non drop clips in a drop frame timeline and re-imported them as drop frame clips - thus correcting the problem. Is this the best solution?
All of the material was loaded thru a kona card as 1080i60 DVCPROHD 29.97
I had no problems capturing the material as long as I used the corrrect firewire setting (ndf vs df).
Anyone have a problem like this? I would greatly appreciate a response.

The camera can record 60i, and 30F:
"HDV 1080, 50i/60i/30F/25F Recording and Playback capable"
Look at the clips...look at their frame rates. What do they say? Is one 59.94? Is the other 29.97?
You would never need to render if you mixed NDF and DF footage. The footage runs at the same speed, on the TC numbers are different. But, you would need to render if your footage had different frame rates. LOOK AT THE CLIPS.

Records alternate between non drop frame and drop frame...

I am seeing a pattern with Premiere records, that alternate the records from being non drop frame to drop frame. So one day we recorded 7 segments. The records ended up coming out like this (without any changes being made between records):
Segment 1 - non drop frame
Segment 2 - drop frame
Segment 3 - non drop frame
Segment 4 - drop frame
Segment 5 - non drop frame
Segment 6 - drop frame
Segment 7 - non drop frame
Is this from a hidden setting we can't find, or is this a known bug?

Avoiding dropped frames?

So I'm trying to switch from iMovie back to FCP. In trying to capture an entire tape (hitting the play button and Capture Now button) I notice that there were five clips where there were dropped frames. In reviewing the tape I notice (with the naked eye and ear) no digital drop-out. So, in my deduction the dropped frames is occuring in either the computer and/or program. How can I eliminate dropped frames and have one clip to work with?

Are you capturing to your system drive? Do you have any antivirus software installed and active?
Search is your friend, and will bring up just about every solution you could imagine for getting your system to the point where it won't drop frames. There's also a full troubleshooting section in the manual devoted to it (at least in the Final Cut 5 manual).
Post what you've tried to fix it, that'll help narrow down the responses you'll get.

1) Do not capture to your main system drive. Since it is busy reading the operating system and application files, it will intermittently drop frames during capture.
2) Do not under any circumstances run any anti-virus/filesaver software. Including Norton and Virex. Sure, Apple doles out Virex for free, but FCP doesn't cooperate with it very well.
If you absolutely feel you must keep Virex installed on your system then use Kevin's script to shut it off before you use FCP:

3) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mas OS Extended, jornalling off. If it isn't, copy your files from it and re-initialize it. If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.
4) Trash the FCP preference file:

If it was working on 10/1, why not open up the most recent backup library with a timestamp of that day. Unless you specified otherwise, your backup folder is in Movies in your home folder. You can double-click one to open it in FCP.
The update command actually wants a mounted drive selected.
I suggest not going into the library bundles and moving or modifying folders/files except as a last resort. It sounds like both libraries are corrupted.

The photos have just been dumped into a new home and need to be told how to be arranged. Go to the top left of the browser view for the merged project and select the desired sort order from the drop-down and they'll all sort according to that setting.

Two camera footage: one drop frame, one non-drop frame

We recently were delivered a batch of tapes for a two camera project that we're doing the post work on. The timecode was jammed to synch the two cameras. Unfortuantely, one of the cameras seems to be drop and the other non-drop. As a result, the tape that is showing as non-drop stops every couple of minutes for a timecode break in order to synch up with the jammed timecode.
The reality is that there is no break in footage in the sense that this footage was recorded as a real-time 30 minute presentation, but because timecode is being jammed, and because the tape was being recorded in non-drop frame, Final Cut cannot capture this footage in its entirety.
My only thought would be to capture through S-video out and place the footage on a timeline, and force the sequence timecode with the appropriate timecode.
Has anyone run into this issue before and know a better solution? Or if the above solution will work?

Update: Rather than S-Video, we're setting the FCP capture setting to non-controllable device. That will give it higher quality, and so far, that is capturing just fine without the breaks.

FCP keeps giving up " warning dropped frames"

I'm working on a project 1024 x 576 and FCP just keeps giving up, I get the dropped frames box up.
I've got a Dual 2.5 with 6.5 gig of ram, whats going on.
I've also just defragmented the disks, I've turned off "unlimited RT"
Any sugestions

I presume I store the files on my new stripped raid but what about the "scratch disk" where should that go?
The new raid stripe IS you scratch disk. The Capture Scratch drive is the drive you store your media on.

And I'm not sure Final Cut will handle the non-standard 1024 X 576 frame size w/o dropped frames no matter how fast your storage subsystem is.
He said that he was editing using the NONE codec. That codec creates huge file sizes and taxes the system. Or do I need to drink more coffee?

Can I copy clips from one project to another? The clips are still frames captured within a video event.

Can I copy clips from one project to another? The clips are frames saved as stills from a video event. I try the copy & paste but it does not seem to work.

The video was converted into MP4 and then I could get it into iMovie events. I had right clicked and saved farmes as stills. ABout 50 of them, When I tried to copy and paste those stills into another project I couldn't. They came up blank.
I ended up going to a Genius appointment at my APPLE store this afternoon and was told that those "stills" aren't really anything. Not a .jpg or video, so the program doesn't recognize them. So instead I'm using the Project with the 50 stills and copying other .jpgs and video into it. (This is for a 1961 Class Reunion, so it's old stuff). Seems to work so far.
So bottom line seems to be I can use these stills created from a video in the project in which they were created, but no where else. Do you know a way around this?

I have tow itunes libraries. Music from one library has merged with the other and I can not delete the songs. They keep coming back.

And now it's the voice control that keeps coming on. If you are wondering why you are not getting any responses, it is because you have vented a complaint without any details that make any sense or give anyone something to work on.
If you want help, I suggest actually detailing what has happened, with versions of software etc. Anything that would let us assist.
As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.
