Dropped Frames and "freezing" during capture

I'm having a problem capturing video....it mostly captures although I get "freezes" where the sound continues but the video frames are dropped. If I leave the Quit capture upon dropped frames I can't capture too much as the freezing happens about every 15 to 30 seconds. Any help?
I'm having the same problems on both computers and also when I try to set the hard drive as the scratch as opposed to my external HD.
MacBook Pro (INtel)
iMac (800mhz)
FCE 2.0
Thanks in advance
Zack

Tom,
Same issue here. I've been capturing well with the same setup months ago and have not had this issue until now.
The video "freezing" happens during writing to the hard disk during capture. Using Activity Monitor, you can see 2 second "bursts" of data written to disk every 30 seconds. The video in the capture window freezes during these bursts.
Activity Monitor also shows zero bytes of data being written to disk in between the bursts, but that doesn't seem right, because I know the video is being captured. (You can play it back in FCE)
The freezing can be seen during capture and when playing the captured clip in the viewer. Audio playback is fine.
I tried 3 different Scratch Disk settings with the same results:
External USB 2.0
External FW 800
Internal disk on PowerMac
Dual 2.0 GHz G5 (Cheese-Grater) PowerMac
10.4.9
FCE HD 3.0
QT Pro 7.1.5
3.5 GB Ram (100% set for FCE in settings)
FCE Easy Setup for DV Converter
Canopus ADVC110 converter
Analog VCR input into Canopus (Default settings on Canopus)
Firewire connection from Canopus to Mac
I couldn't find anything in your FCE Editing Workshop book that could help with this either. Everything worked fine a few months ago.

Dropped frames during capture are typically a result of a slow disk setup.
Where is your Capture Scratch folder? (System Settings)
Are you external drives connected via Firewire also?
Often the internal drive (SATA) is much faster than the Firewire
interface. Try capturing to your internal, then moving to
the externals for editing and backup.

  • Dealing with dropped frames and out of sync audio

    Hi!
I'm using Final Cut Studio 3 and I'm trying to record some video from a pretty old MiniDV-camera. The problem is that a have some dropped frames and when I record the whole thing it gets out of sync.
By default Final Cut aborts the capture (without saving) when it finds dropped frames. That won't work for me. I start recording, it records a couple of minutes and then it just aborts without saving anything.
I tried to record the entire tape when using the option of not aborting on dropped frames. I recorded the entire video but not it gets more and more out of sync later and later in the video.
So, do you have any suggestions on how to deal with this? Maybe I can use an external application for this cause I haven't found a way to deal with this in Final cut.
    Best
    Felix

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Did you shoot in DV or HDV ?
Did you try to capture HDV with Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 (or 50 for europe)?
Does you downconvert HDV shooted to DV upon capturing from camcorder ?
DV-NTSC 48 kHz is the way to go with downconverted material.
Does your DV audio setting is 16 bit on FX1 ? (HDV is a fixed one).

  • Drop Frame and Non Drop Frame

Does QuickTime Pro 7 allow you to select between drop frame and non-drop frame?

    I don't understand your question.
QuickTime Player will automatically reduce the implied frame rate to maintain the file playing. You can observe this by viewing any HD movie trailer on a non supported OS.
Frame rate drops so much that the file is nearly not viewable yet the audio portion continues to play back without issue.
The QuickTime author can't set these parameters and QuickTime Pro users can override the issue by selecting to "Play All Frames". This can quickly bring playback to its knees on older systems but it will not drop any frame during playback. It may take two days to view each frame of a 1080 HD movie trailer on a G3 but you should see each one.

  • Premiere Freezes During Capture

I have a problem with Premiere freezing during capture, consistently at 17 minutes, around 25 seconds.
I am capturing from a Blackmagic Decklink SDI card, 720p 59.94, ProRes 422 HQ.  I've also tried LT.
I am running Premiere 6.0.2 on OS 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro.  My 1TB disk is empty and still has 900GB available after 17min of capturing.
    Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem. The diference is im capturing from another device (Sharp Video 8 camera connected to BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle for Thunderbolt). Premiere doesnt freeze, only the capture window shows freezed image, at some random point, first it was almost like afer 1hr of recording but now is at any time, sometimes after secconds. Sometimes i can still hit stop and the filename window appears so i can save the file, but other times it doesnt. I hit stop and nothing, so i try to hit record again and it starts recording again, i can tell because another file is created, but the previous file is corrupt (i suppose because it isnt closed by premiere).

  • Dropped frames and Spinning ball no matter what...

    Hello,
After many months of flawless performance since the FCP 7 upgrade, FCP has decided to drop frames and give me the beach ball of death when editing anything: SD, HD and audio.
I am working off of an external G-Raid HD. I've connected via both FW800 and eSATA w/ the same above results.
    Here's what I've done:
    -Trashed Preferences
    -Repaired permissions on external drive
-Run Disk Warrior on external drive
-Run Disk Warrior on boot drive
-Uninstalled FCP w/ FCS Remover and Re-installed FCP (not the whole suite just FCP)
    -Moved project to internal drive
After all of the above I am still having the same problems.
    Any insight?
    thanks,
    -B

Thanks for the response, I should have been more clear:
"Did you move both the project and the associated media files to a discrete, dedicated internal SATA drive, and also trashed all the render files?"
Yes, but I didn't trash the render files I'll do that. Unfortunately I don't think it will help because I forgot to mention that this happens w/ different projects on different external HDs.
"What are the sequence settings for that project?"
I've experienced this w/ a project editing XDCAM footage & a project editing DV footage. Both projects live on different external drives.
"And what does it consist of, ie video, stills, etc?"
Video, stills, music and text. No special treatments (drop shadow, movement, etc) a pretty basic timeline.
    thanks,

  • Dropped Frames and Sluggish Performance since 10.0.6

Hey all, I am having a rough time since the latest update and I can't seem to figure out what to do next. I am working on a project and it seems that I am stuck on how to proceed. I was working fine with my set up until a couple days ago..
I have a high end 27' iMac quad i7 3.4 with 16gb of ram and a 1gb graphcis card and mountain lion
I run my media off of a Drobo S via firewire 800, which had two 3tb bay to start with and just recently added another 2 3 tb drives.
All of my footage comes from a Canon 7D DSLR and when imported is checked off to optimize media to make things run faster and at better performance.
After running the latest update it seems that everything in fcpx just crawls. I can play a clip in the event browser just fine, but when I try to play a timeline that I had made just days before it chokes and starts dropping frames immediately. I cant edit with the dropped frames and sluggish reaction that im getting.
So far I have uninstalled and reinstalled FCPX, and I have accessed my Drobo from my 15" Retina that also has 10.6 and it also crawls at the same snails pace when trying to play my projects.
These steps have led me to believe that it is not the machine itself, but with no guidance on what else it could be. I know everyone has been saying that the new update has provided great performacne boosts and speed enhancements and stability however i seem to have taken a wrong turn somewhere as I am getting the exact opposite, HELP!
    Mike

So after thinking more about it I believe I have narrowed down the issue and that is "bad timing". Part of my issue was that I updated to 10.0.6 last night as well as added in 2 new 3tb drives into my drobo. This made it harder for me to narrow my issue. Assuming 10.0.6 is fine, that means that the Drobo would be my problem. After consulting Drobo Support, I have discovered that when adding new drives to a a Drobo the system needs time (lots of it) to re-allocate and index the previously loaded content. So the footage on the Drobo needs time to be moved and placed onto the new drives. Unfortunately this was never explained, nor was there any sort of progress bar to show that this was happeneing.
In short this means I was trying access my Drobo (where my content is stored) WHILE my Drobo was reallocating and moving that content around internally among its 4 drives. I would like to say this is the exact answer for what has been happening but unfortunately until it is done "allocating" (which Drobo estimates to be 24-36 hours) I will not be able ot fully test this theory.
Just thought i'd post an update for anyone else who ever gets stuck on Drobo related questions.

  • Mixing Drop Frame and Non Drop Frame In One Timeline

We did a 7-camera multicam shoot of a rock concert over the weekend. Upon capturing we realized two of our camera operators were shooting Non Drop Frame mode while the remaining 5 were shooting drop frame. Can someone describe to me how I can eventually get all seven cameras into one timeline? I realize I might have to output/convert the non drop frame stuff. And since we're one the topic, I'd also like to ask (in case I find this out later) what I might do if we find a camera that shot 24P (29.97). Thanks in advance!
    G5 DUAL QUAD & 2 X Power PC G4 (Dual 533) & 550 TiBook   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

There is nothing different about the footage from the cameras...they all run at 29.97fps. The only difference is in the way the timecode NUMBERS are treated. Drop frame code simply loses 2 numbers (00 and 01) every minute except for every 10th minute. That's it. They all run at the same speed, so putting them all in the same timeline shouldn't cause any problems.
Trying to make a multiclip based on timecode will be a problem, however. You will have to find a common frame on all and use that.

  • Dropped Frames and Render/Playback problems in Final Cut Express HD

I use FCE HD and edit HD video off my Sony camcorder. Recently I've got rid of my old Imac G5 and have a newer 2GHz PowerPC G5 with more RAM (2GB) off a friend because my old mac wasn't fast enough and was incapable of playing back some of my edits.
At first when i got my new mac things looked faster and it was playing transitions without dropped frames etc. However now i've started editing again and imported new projects, i've got a big problem with dropped frames during playback and rendering. I get dropped frames during unedited clips let alone at transitions and for some reason, fce will no longer render video. Unedited clips from my latest project need rendering, which i've never had before, but when i try to render them the 'writing video...' pop up flashes, but nothing happens and the video is not rendered!
Now i can't watch and edit some of my projects without dropped frames stopping playback every other clip and i can't do anything with my new ones because the video need rendering but can't be rendered!
Can anyone help me out on either topic?

    Hi Ross,
Well, most people, myself included, would say you should consider yourself lucky if doing video via USB ever worked at all for you. Overall, USB is not up to the demands of video, and that is most likely why you are getting your dropped frames problem.
The solutions would be either use your internal HD or get a good external FW drive. I know this is frustrating, as it has been for many people who look at the raw specs where USB 2.0 appears faster than FW400 but in real life, for video especially, it is not.

  • Major problems with dropped frames while trying to capture

Are there any settings where you can change the sensitivity of FCP HD or any settings that I am not aware of?
Trying to capture from DigiBeta through a Sony J30 SDI, the whole thing wount go for a minute without intruption and dropped frames.
I have tryed several tapes and finally I tried to copy through FireWire on to MiniDV on my XL1on a new unused DV-tape and then from there on capture into FCP but the problem remains.
I have had some minor problems with this earlier but never as severe.
I am capturing onto a Lacie BigDisc hooked up through Firewire 800 and there ia 170 GB free so thet should not be a problem.

    Andreas,
The J30 specs state "All standard definition, half-inch Betacam format tapes, dating back some twenty years, can now easily be converted to a 25 Mbps DV signal and transferred to a compatible DV device via a single digital interface cable.", but you say you've tried that, and from the specs I'm assuming you'd need some conversion from the deck to go straight into FCP...like a Canopus or like you did dropping to DV tape.
Have you tried a different FW port and/or cable?
Other posts have mentioned changes of FW cables or ports as a solution, so I'm inclined to agree with David that you may require a FW800 card...we purchased one, when we bought our Big Disk Extreme. However, I don't capture to it, only archives and storage.
Are you trying to capture internally to your system drive? (I'd guess not, as I've read some of your posts and would be surprised if you were)
Any recent upgrades/updates or other changes in your config?

  • FCP HD 4.5 footage freezes during capture

    Hello
    Here we go again!
I just upgraded to Tiger 10.4.9 and QT 7.1.6 and I'm having issues with capturing footage. Basically the video in Log and Capture window freezes for 2-5 seconds periodically while capturing, so it skips and when I playback the captured clip, I get a jumpcut. The tape keeps rolling during capture and camera responds to all the controls. Any ideas on how to fix this glitch? Please advise!
    Thank you.

  • Dropped Frames and Setup

Hello all and thank you for your time. I am using FCP 5 on a MacBookPro and continue having a dropped frames issue. I have gone through the list in the error message box and to the best of my knowledge changed, or let be, what should have been. I used a Sony PD-170 for filming and instead of tapes a FireStore FS-4. I transferred all of the original footage to an external HD, which at the time was a 500GB G-Drive by G-Tech. I now use a 1TB LaCie Big Disk via FW. The footage has not been logged or captured in FCP. I am not exactly sure what to say as I am extremely frustrated and for the time being, lost. I probably need more help than I think, and I am very willing to listen and learn. Any info needed from me about my setup will gladly be given.

And I gotta say, I've had problems with both G-tech drives and LaCie disks. You might consider an external sata drive with a sata card. Although I haven't worked extensively with external sata's on a macbookpro (although I have one), the external sata enclosure I have that I use with my dual2.5 gig G5 is rocksolid with more than enough thruput for many HD formats.

  • Dropped Frames and Audio Drop Outs???

    PowerMac G5 1.8GHz Mac OS 10.5.7 4GB RAM 250GB Hard Drive
    Final Cut Express 4.0.1
    Sony DCR-TRV310
When I attempt to do a direct capture via firewire I am only able to get one or two seconds of video before FCE complains that it has reached the end of the tape.
If I try to capture from the tape instead of direct it captures OK but the video blinks like it has dropped a frame and the audio is full of drop outs, pops and other noises. Those noises are not there when I listen to the tape directly on the camera.
    Is my machine to slow?
I have tried several different firewire cables and all of the firewire ports. I have rebooted and made sure I have all the latest updates.
I also have a DCR0SR80 and a DCR-SR220 but neither of those have firewire however when I import the video into FCE (after converting formats) that video plays fine. I would really like to use the TRV310 though since I can capture directly.
    Suggestions? Thanks.
    - C. Thomas

I have a MacTopus (8-core) and also had one particularly bad video import. FCE 3.5 would complain and stop importing so often that I gave up and used iMovie to import the DV footage from the camera. Then I imported that footage into FCE. Apparently iMovie is not so picky and tends to ignore timecode info when importing. If the timecode info is not critical for you - try iMovie.
