Dropped frames message help...

Hello, I'm cutting using with fcp 5.4 on a power pc, g-5 w/4gb of ram and using a WEstern Digital 1tb external hard drive for editing. I'm getting constant dropped frames message everytime I try to stack clips, I've lowered all of the resolution and frame rate settings to the lowest and still drops the framses.. any suggestions would be most helpful. also, I'm editing 1080 60i HD footage, all of the settings are matched up in the easy set up, I am also using photos in the timeline too.
Thanks so much for any help!!

Hi David, thanks for your reply.
-codec is converted from .mts files into DVCPRO HD 1080 60i Integer Bid Endian
WD drive is connected externally using usb 2.0 (firewire port is not working anymore)
-Footage was shot in 1080 60i AVCHD, then converted to apple intermediate, then converted again to DVCPRO HD 10801 using Mpeg streamclip (fcp 5 would only work with the Dvcpro hd.
-I Don't have a large enough internal drive but maybe that would work better?
Thanks again!

  • Jumpy timeline, dropped frames - please help!

I am experiencing a persistent problem with a jumpy timeline that surges forward - (it looks like dropped frames). I have all of my media on an external hardrive with 160 GB to spare, I have formatted that HD as Mac OS extended "Journaled". I have made RT as "Safe" and video quality as "dynamic", frame rate as "dynamic". It seems to be unnoticable when I reduce the size of the canvas to below 50% but at that point I am going cross-eyed in trying to decipher the picture on the screen.
    Question 1:
Do I need to reformat my HD without " Journalled" or is this not a problem?
Any other ideas how to resolve?
    Question 2:
What is Pulldown Pattern and what setting is best for my project (720 x 480 DV/DVCPRO - NTSC 29.97 fps)?
Any help in these matters would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Thanks for your suggestions.
All in all, I tried everything but to no avail. i suspect that in my trying to figure out solutions, i may have made some illogical formatting/preferences for my media and project on the hole. I ended up just starting from scratch with a new project, rudimentary preferences, imported my media - and it has been perfect ever since.
For anyone with similar issues, I highly recommend reading this article. It troubleshoots everything having to do with this subject.

  • Final Cut Pro 4.5 & Dropped Frames..Please Help

I am a wedding videographer and have been using Final Cut Pro with no problems for several video projects. My most current project however problems arise. I am using Mac OS X 10.4.9 with 512 MB of Ram on a G5 1.8 Single. When I try importing video from my last wedding when I capture it I always am getting a message saying dropped frames were present. I have tried 2 different camcorders, 2 different firewire cables, defragmenting my hard drive and still nothing but dropped frames messages. I also have tried importing video from a previous wedding with no luck. If anyone has any ideas please help. Thanks

FCP 4.5 and Mac OS 10.4.9 are incompatible...known issue.

Shane's Stock Answer #45 - How to get FCP 4.5 working again under Mac OS 10.4.9
Apple's solution: Archive and install the OS again, this time updating only to 10.4.8.
Another COOL solution: Samba2007 posted that a friend solved the FCP 4.5 + OSX 10.4.9 capture issue adding the Capture Scratch folder to the Privacy of Spotlight in this thread:

OlSchoolCutter tried with SUCCESS (see post in that thread).
Then follow these stepe and try (it's free!):
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. From the View menu, choose Spotlight.
    3. Click the Privacy tab to reveal the areas that Spotlight will not index.
    4. In the Finder, open your "Final Cut Pro Documents" folder.
    5. Drag the Capture Scratch folder into Spotlight's list.

  • Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Dropping Frames Without the usual message

    Hi,
I recently started having a problem with the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview. When my video plays full screen it drops frames and the "Drop Frame" message does not come up. Basically the image stops (or freezes temporarily) and the audio keeps going. Eventually the video starts playing again, but it always stops again and the Drop Frame message never appears. And yes, "Report Drop Frames During Playback" is checked on. I am an experienced user and I have never seen a problem like this. It started recently after the update to 7.0.1. The video plays fine in the canvas window. The problem only occurs when I go full screen (using the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview option), which I would like to use. It was working perfectly, until recently. Any ideas????
No - there is not a bunch of stuff on my computer.
No - it does not matter if the video is DVCPro HD, HDV, or standard DV (I am using all three and I have tried different project files. I have tried files on one of the internal drives and different projects on external hard drives, all have the same problem.)
No - new software or files have been added to my computer
Yes - I trashed the preference about a dozen times. It does not help.
My system is less than a year old

So far so good.... Thanks Andy!
I did look through the previous posts, but must have missed that one. I just replaced the "DesktopVideoout.component" file. It seems to be working! The real test will be after a day of editing later this weekend. Thank You! And Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Dropped frames in FCP 6.0.4

    Hello,
I have just shot a wedding and have 4 x 40 min. mini-dv tapes that I have captured. I had the 'there are dropped frames' message after capturing the footage but have had this before several times and have not experienced any problems so just ignored it, however this time appears to be different.
My audio is way out of sync with my video because the audio obviously continued to be captured over the dropped frames which has pushed the video out of sync.
I am half a country's distance away from my physical tapes so cannot re-capture the footage. I have isolated the dropped frames within FCP using the 'analyze long frames' tool but would really rather not have to go through the icky process of re-aligning the audio with the video between these points.
I was really hoping that someone may know of a plug-in that could do this re-syncing job for me, I have googled but couldn't find anything, this or any other help/advice would be much appreciated.
    Cheers.

My current thinking is I will have to make the journey to perform a re-capture, but to make sure the journey is not in vain should I amend my user preferences?
I have the 'sync audio to video source if present' checked which I think could be causing me problems, because FCP might be trying to sync audio to the dropped frames, which is causing the sync-issue.
I have the 'abort capture on dropped frames' unchecked, otherwise the capture would be ridiculous.
Is the only practical solution to dub the tapes to new tapes with unbroken timecodes? Help much appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Can't Get Rid of Dropped Frames in FCP 7

    Hello all,
I am editing in FCP and have only gotten as far as laying down a music track (MP3), and some b-role. I have given myself some space at the beginning of the track, and as soon as the video kicks in I get the dropped frames message. There are no fancy edits or effects, just the video. It happens with both .MOV files taken with my Canon 7D, and with footage I had converted from .MTS.
The RT drop-down menu in the timeline only offers the following options:
    Play Base Layer Only
    Use Playback Settings
    Full Quality
I have gone into Playback Control under System Settings and adjusted the options to the following:
    RT: Safe
    Video Quality: Low
    Frame Rate: Quarter
I am still receiving the dropped frame message. My footage is stored on a 500 GB external Rugged LaCie drive, and is connected using 8-pin FireWire. The footage is being edited in 1080. Everything is up to date.
    Much appreciation for your help.

    Thank you both for replying.
I converted the audio file (but still getting the error message) to AIFF/16bit/48kHz using iTunes. I had converted the .MTS fils to .MOV with iSkysoft Converter to the following settings:
    Resolution: 1920x1080
    Frame Rate: 23.97
    Bit Rate: High Quality
    Channel: 2 Channels stereo
    Sample Rate: 44100
    Bit Rate: Medium
I did not convert any of the Canon files to Pro Res. What do I need to do with those files? and is there something I can do during capture to help save a step in post?
    Thanks again to you both!
    Warmest regards,
    ~Shawn

  • Dropped frames during playback. Dumb question but I'm just starting to edit again with a new comp. and FC 7

    Hello out there,
It's been three years since I've used Final Cut Pro and I"m just getting back in to it. I'm working on my first project editing footage from my Canon 5D markII.
I'm trying to do a simple cross fade on the video track but when I watch the playback I'm getting a dropped frame message. I am using the highest video quality on my cannon but it seems like my computer with a 3.4 Ghz prossesor and 32 gigs of ram should be able to handle a simple cross fade.
Could it be that I need to change a setting somewhere to make FCP handle my canon's video better?
    Thank you so much!
    I appreciate the help.
    Mike

Please tell me you converted this footage...the native H.264 format the camera shoots...to ProRes. Because FCP doesn't work with H.264 well at all.
I have a workflow for this and other tapeless cameras here:

  • Multiclip Playback Dropped Frames

I am MultiClip editing 3 ProRes streams and getting the dreaded "RT....Dropped Frames" message every 5-10 seconds. Have followed the standard protocol (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11226192) for this and problem continues.
    Details:
-24" iMac 4GB Ram w/ plenty of HD space
-Clips were logged/transferred onto iMac HD (no external)
-Completed 2.5 hour multiclip last week, 3 streams, with only a handful of dropped frames issues
-Current project has been tried on 2 identical iMacs and a new fully loaded MacBook Pro and the issue is the same on all 3 machines.
Have read Shane Ross post/response at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11226192
Questions for Shane and Other Experts:
Is it likely that because my iMac HD is Journaled, I should be using an external?
Is this problem a playback issue or a capture issue?
What do you advise? Please help!
    Thanks!
    S. Brown

    Shane's rule #1
    1) Do not capture to your main system drive.
That drive has enough to do just operating the OS and FCP...then you expect it to perpetually read 3 streams of media?
It may work for awhile, but as you're finding out, things eventually bog down.
    Get an external.
Journaling may slow things very slightly, but you should have your system drive journaled...(but not necessary on an external)
It's only a capture issue if your media format doesn't match your sequence settings. This sounds like a throughput issue.

  • Dropping Frames in FCE 3

Im using FCE 3 and have a G5 tower running OSX 10.4.11. I import from a JVC GR-DV800U and a Canon XL-2 with a firewire cable. I haven't had any trouble, and after doing no video work for a couple of months, I suddenly am dropping frames when trying to capture from either device. It always happens right around 5 and a half minutes, and then Final Cut freezes up another five minutes as it works out the Dropped Frame message. Is this the result of a software update I have done?

Thank you very much. I tried looking in the forums for the answer originally, but if you don't know the cause, you don't really know what to look for. I've found it, with your help. Thanks so much!

  • Dropped frames-break in timecode

    need help fast!
trying to capture an HDCAM tape that is a master. there is no break in timecode on this tape. however, i keep getting either a dropped frames message or TC break message. CPU is Dual 2GHz with 2.5 gig ram going thru blackmagic HD card with 5.5 TB Xserve Raid. shouldn't have any speed problems. everything was running fine til last week, now i can't capture. thanks for any advice.
    Tom

    Hi Thomas,
I stumbled across your post when doing a search. We're experiencing similar problems here when capturing reasonably large sized clips (10 min), the only variable being the DigiBeta deck we're using. Final Cut will pause over a random section of tape and declare a timecode break. I've checked the tapes back over the suspect sections and the timecode is intact with no breaks. I usually cancel then recapture and it won't see any break at all.
Hardware is a dual 2.7 G5 with 2 Tb SCSI storage and 4.5 Gb RAM. OS is at 10.4.2, QT at 7.0.1. Capturing via Blackmagic DeckLink Extreme at 10bit uncompressed. The drives have no trouble with the data rate whatsoever. The system and deck are protected from power spikes with a Belken UPS.
How did the Blackmagic update and FCP reinstall work out for you? Are you still having the problems?
    Cheers, Paul.

  • Dropped Frames / Odd Rendering

    Hello,
As background, I recently completed a project (DVCPRO HD 720p) at a workshop on an iMac. I don't have the specs on the iMac but it's at least a year or two old. I wanted to continue working on this project at home so I have purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 2.0Ghz i7 - 8GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 RAM - AMD Radeon HD 6490M 256 MB. I've installed Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 and I'm using the same GRaid Mini 500GB (Raid 0 - FW800) drive I used in the workshop which is writing at 65MB/sec and reading at 76MB/sec. I'm now getting requests to render clips as well as dropped frames messages where I never did on the iMac. I've spent hours scouring forums (this one, Creative Cow, DV, etc...) and the only suggestion that's made any difference was pumping up the number of real time audio tracks on playback, but most of my problems seem video related. I've turned off the energy saver features, tinkered with render settings, memory, etc..., although I stopped short of modifying the RT Software Enabler file. I'm just not sure what else to try or if I'm even looking in the right place. I have to believe this Macbook should blow the doors off that iMac but maybe I'm wrong. Any help is appreciated.

    OK, your problems are:
You are tying to edit with video that is in the H.264 codec.
H.264 is a recording and delivery format, it is not designed for editing, as it is very, very processor intensive.
Your clips are also in a different frame rate than your sequence 29.97 and your sequence is 23.98.
    The source clips are a non-standard frame size 540 x 360.
It would be tough going for any computer to play this combination of incorrect item properties back in real time on a timeline that has a 23.98 frame rate and a DVCPRO 720P60 codec.
This is a perfect storm of miss-matched material.
Is your sequence setting because you have camera footage shot in that format? Is the camera material 23.98?
What format material do you have the most of?
What are you intending to do with this once you have completed it (Make DVD, post to web site, make Blu-Ray, etc.) ?

  • Dropped Frames/Quicktime Import

I keep getting dropped frame messages during playback of quicktime footage I imported and am re-cutting. Why?

+Is there a way to transfer the files from the MBP to my MacPro without doing another camera to computer baby sitting job? Maybe via iDisk?+
Yes, this is quite easy, but don't do it via iDisk.
Option 1 - copy the clip files from the MBP to one of your firewire drives. Then move the firewire drive to your MacPro and copy the clips to your Capture Scratch folder.
Option 2 - Shut down your MacPro and then start it up in *target disk mode* (hold down the "T" key while it starts up - eventually you will get a FireWire icon on the MacPro's screen - that tells you it's in target disk mode).
Then Connect your MBP to your MacPro via a firewire cable. Copy the clips directly to the Capture Scratch folder on your MacPro. When you're done copying, on your MBP unmount the drive icon that represents your MacPro. Shut down both machines. Disconnect the firewire cable between them.
Here's an article on Ken Stone's website that also describes the process.
Copy speed via FW400 is about 1GB per minute; via FW800 is about 2GB per minute. There is no compression involved - you are merely copying the files from one location to another.
One more thing - after you copy the clips to your MacPro, shut down your MacPro and restart it. Then open one of the clip files in QuickTime (on your MacPro). If you get an error message that says you are not allowed to open the clip because you don't have adequate privileges, you will need to change the ownership of the clips (since you captured them on another Mac under a different username, that user 'owns' the files). If that happens, and you need help with it, let us know, we can tell you how to change the ownership.

  • Dropped Frames msg stops playback and after render and export has gaps

I extracted video from a DVD that a client wants to use for an online video teaser. The video was extracted as an AVI and then converted to QT. I imported the QT to Final Cut Pro ver3 edited the segments. There are only 4 clips; 2 graphics and 2 quick video clips. At the beginning of each clip Final Cut puts up a dropped frames message. Everything in the sequence is rendered but it will not play through the dropped frames message. I exported the sequence to QT and when played back showed a green screen were each dissolve is . I have tried adjusting the preferences based on the Final Cut message but this does not have any affect on the outcome. Any suggestions of how to resolve the issue are welcome. I am in the process of extracting the video again to see if I can get it without dropped frames if that is where it happened. Help/advice is welcome.

When you are extracting the video from the DVD, what compression are you using? Quicktime is just a codec but the compression is important. If you are using standard def video, I like to use DVCPro50 as a compression since it is light but gives excellent quality. Also, make sure that your sequence settings match the video settings. Say that you are using 4:3, lower field, DVCPro50 compression at 29.97fps; then you will want your sequence settings to match that exactly. Since you are using FCP 3 then you will have to change these manually.

  • Dropped Frames During Playback, How Much Hardware Should I have

I have a Mac Pro Dual Xeon 2.66 with 1 gig of ram and the Nvidia 256 meg card, I added a second hard drive which is a Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s and that is my scratch disk. I was trying to play a sequence that is from the tutorial disk in the Final Cut Pro 5 book by Diana Weynard. For those who know the book it is the "adding text" sequence from lesson 15.
I can play most of the sequences on the book's dvd in real time fine except for this one. With this one as soon as I get to the clips that have a lot of audio channels as well as a lower third text effect I get the dropped frames message. I can render the whole sequence and watch the whole thing fine. Really my question is this: I thought having spent what I did on a mac pro that would be enough hardware power to play back almost anything in real time, but do I need something else like more memory or the faster ati video card to play back this "heavier" sequences?
I've tried various solutions like deleting my pref file, reducing the number of real time audio mixing tracks to just 2. I even deleted the audio tracks in teh sequence so there were only 2 video tracks that had to play - a person speaking with just one outline video effect on the track above, and still it drops frames.
    Thanks.

Some of those sequences are HD. A single 7200 rpm drive will only deliver one or two HD streams without choking. My 7200 rpm internals will only deliver 4 streams of DV before skipping. If I move some clips to another drive and segregate my render files to another drive I can get up to 6 DV streams but it's not reliable.
Processing the audio requires significant overhead as does recovering the audio segments of the files. I rarely have more than 6 tracks open.Lowering the playback quality will increase the numbers of tracks you can play in realtime.
History note: Older NLEs required audio and video to be captured to separate drives, unnecessary with DV.

  • Premiere Pro 1.5 - dropped frame issue

First let me say I know this program is out dated so let's not get into that. (or maybe we will) The company I work for is small and just can't afford to upgrade. So, as I am stuck with this program there have been reoccuring issues with dropped frames.
I use a PD-150 and/or DVX-100 to shoot. I used a mini-DV deck to capture to the system via firewire. I noticed that there were several random dropped frames throughout the show. (The show being a dance recital) The big hassle is that it is a two camera show and so everytime I think I have the cameras matched up, oh gee great, there's a nother dropped frame. I then recaptured the tapes from the camera that they were shot in. Same problem, only the dropped frames were in different areas. Does this mean that the tape is not damaged? That it did not occur during filming? Is it a problem with the capturing device? We have a Matrox system. I am also capturing to an external harddrive. Firewire. But this has happened when I've used the computer hard drives for project space. So, I'm not sure if that would make a diffrence.
Basically, wtf can I do to stop dropped frames?
Is it the video card? capturing system?
Do we really just need to upgrade our software to solve the issue?
If indeed there is a solution, would I have to recapture everything in order to get rid of the dropped frames?
    Help please! Thanks!

Recapture to a internal drive is your best option imo.
