Dropped Frames PPro CS4  AVCHD MTS cards

I just purchased a Panasonic AG-HMC40U video cam.  I am using a Sandisk 32GB extreme SDHC card.  I did a shoot where I shot for two one hour sessions turning the camera off once and then on again between the two sessions.  I have a Dell Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU  920@ 2.67GHz   12GB ram, 64 bit with Win 7 home edition.  I put the card into my computer and saved the complete set of files to a folder on the computer. The files on the card are divided up into 26 minute sections which seems odd since I turned the camera off and on only once during the session.    I import the stream files into Adobe CS4 Prem Pro.  What I notice is at the end of each segment there is a dropped audio and visual frame.  Not good when recording someone singing!  I can overlay the visual with shots from another camera but the audio is not replaceable in live shows.  This also happens with my other Canon Vixia...but I figured it was the camera..now I know its not.  It happens with other SDHC cards as well.
I did take my card files to the store where I purchased my Panasonic and they had Mac Final Cut Pro.  They imported the segmented files into it and it came in as two (which was the amount they should be) and there were  no dropped frames.
I am perplexed as to why this is happening. I am told by everyone so far that I had talked to that it is Adobe Prem Pro CS4 that is not inporting the files correctly.  Should I upgrade to CS5.5?  Will this correct the issue?  Help.

if its just one "red" frame..at each "segment" , you can cut that one frame out when you see it. and it wont hurt your timing etc or sync...when sound and video is still linked. ( in other words that one frame is cut out for both video and sound)
I tend to think its the fat32 thing ( mac ) vs NTFS ( pc ).  dont be bummed ...happens even with pro dailies and stuff from fcp and avid to dvd dailies and is just one of those things you can fix  ( cut the frame out ) ...pretty fast and easy to do.

  • The best Mac MTS Splitter-Editing/splitting AVCHD MTS/M2TS videos successfully on Mac

I have recorded a long video with Sony HDR-CX700 Camcorder, but there are some parts I would like to cut off. I once thought a video converter is a must for cutting videos. But I search for a long time , found may spliter and converter just for windows, no MAC. Yesterday, my friend recommended me try Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac. Not only can help me  frame by frame cutting/splitting AVCHD without re-encoding, but also can help me convert mts to Apple ProRes and  AIC  codec for Final Cut Pro/ iMovie.
I think should have many users need a program that allows for  (frame by frame) cut AVCHD MTS/M2TS videos files. If you are looking for any frame accuracy solution to do with the AVCHD videos encoded in MTS format on Mac,  Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac is the best choice for you. This is the first Mac software which can help HD camcorders users to realize frame by frame editing/splitting AVCHD MTS/M2TS videos successfully on Mac.
Here I would like to demonstrate the simple steps to cut AVCHD MTS/M2TS videos files without re-encoding on Mac.
Step 1. Load AVCHD MTS videos to Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac.
    - To load AVCHD videos from camcorder
Connect camcorder to computer with USB cable, and run Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac, you will be asked to follow the wizard. Otherwise, click the Camcorder button to load camcorder videos.
You can choose to backup the videos to computer or just import videos. Here we just select Import to add videos from camcorder to the program.
Step 2. Add MTS files for split with no recompression.
Click the Add movie button, and a movie for lossless output will be created by default. Select the MTS files you would like to cut mts from the Camcorder tab, drag and drop to the movie.
    Step 3. Split/Cut AVCHD video.
From the timeline, you may notice the vernier, which is used as time pointer. Click on the Vernier, and move to the timeline you want to cut, and click the "Split" button to cut the video. You may also click the Split button when the video plays to the point you want to cut.
Then click on segment you want to cut off from the timeline, and then click the Delete button next to the Split button to remove the unwanted part.
Step 4. Export videos without conversion.
Choose Export in the main interface, and click the OK button to get videos without recompression. You will get the cutted/splitted AVCHD without quality lost in a few minutes.

I hear good things about ClipWrap. The other good one is Voltaic HD  from Shedworx.
I suggest that you read their websites and choose the best one for you.
I think they have demo versions.
If you import directly from your camera, you don't need these.
Also, for future reference, you can use the Create Camera Archive feature on the Import screen. This will save your AVCHD files exactly as they are on your camera, but it will also preserve the metadata from your camera so that iMovie can import it later. It is a good way to save the contents of your camera at its original size and full quality.
When you import AVCHD into iMovie it is converted into Apple Intermediate Codec for better performance, but it will be a larger file size because it is less compressed.
With ClipWrap, you have the option to keep the file at its original size, but I would not recommend this for performance reasons. (But you can try it if you have a powerful Mac).

  • (PPro CS4/Windows) AVCHD to DVCPRO HD Converter

I just recently won a Sony HDR-PJ270, which shoots AVCHD 1080 60i (30 frames per second, 60 fields)/60p (60 progressive frames per minute --- twice the frame rate of NTSC).  The camera also records in MP4 --- but from what I can figure out it only does that if you are in "Dual-Mode", where it records the AVCHD as your "Good" footage, and then the MP4 is recorded for uploading to the internet.
Anyway I was testing some footage in PPro CS4, and the AVCHD was really causing my system to just slow down --- way---way---way down.  I've downloaded the Koyote Free HD Video converter, and I really was not impressed with the conversion quality (of course I'm not too impressed with the video quality when playing right from the camera to my TV via HDMI---but I think that has to do with AVCHD's compression and color space of 4:2:0---on smaller lines, such as pinstriping on a car, I was finding the color moving around just like I used to find with S-VHS and narrow lines) whether it is DVD for clients or I also volunteer at a local cable station and sometimes I do news stories for them and they still broadcast at 480i, so while this camera will not be used for my main camera, I may use it for wide angle shots (i.e. at a concert set it up on wide at the back of the auditorium).  So is there a converter out there that will convert the AVCHD to DVCPRO HD or even DVCPRO50 (still keep the AVCHD files for future use) so that I can edit the video without draining my system's resources?

I did play with the camera and TV settings, but nothing changed.  Even just playing the file back with WMP it has the issue.  As for 4:2:0 I never found it offered good color, even at SD levels---I prefer, and find, the formats that deal with 4:1:1 or 4:2:2 or. 4:4:4 color spaces due to the better color, due to less crosstalk.

  • PPro CS6:  Source Monitor Dropping Frames

    Greetings,
Currently I'm working off an iMac, OSC 10.8.4, 12 GB RAM, with i7, and ATI Radeon 1GB video card.  I haven't noticed it recently until today for some reason, but my source monitor keeps dropping frames like crazy after about 5 seconds of playback.
I've read other threads that recommend lower preview frame res, as well as playback res to 1/4.  I've tried that, allocated more memory to PPro (only 2GB left to other applications, yet PPro seems to only use 1.9GB during dropped frame playback), shut down other proccesses that might be consuming memory, switched PPro to enable better "Performance" in preferences, and rebooted several times.
I realized that it could be the source footage from the start:  1080p 23.976fps TIFF sequence.
How can I get PPro to actually use more than 1.9GB of memory during playback in order to get over this TIF hump?  Or does the real answer lie not in memory, but more processing power?
Not a job-threatening situation, but just curious as to what it takes.
    Thanks!
    -Hunter

Okay, thanks for the additional infor. I've taken note of this issue and will investigate when we return from the company shutdown on July 8.

  • Ability to Recover Dropped Frames in Spanned MTS Files?

    Hi everyone,
I know there's a previous thread about an issue similar to this, but it's been a long time since someone commented so I'm trying to get a quicker more specific answer here.  I'll keep this short:
Using a Sony NXCAM, and I was not aware of needing to use the Content Mangement Utility to export footage onto my editing machine.  I realize this is how you get the spanned MTS files back into a single file.  I now have over 200 GB of footage shot over a week long period.  I just copied over the MTS files ONLY to my editing machine each day, then reformatted the cards to make space for the next day's footage.
Now, when placed in the timeline, all the clips have the dropped audio frames where they were split.
My question is, is there a way to recover/recombine these files AFTER they've been taken off the memory card, and I no longer have anything but the MTS files only - not the PRIVATE folder, or any of the accompanying stuff.
Am I SOL here? Or is there a way to recombine the spanned files at this point?
Using Premiere Pro CS5.5, but also have access to CS6 if needed.

I was not aware of needing to use the Content Mangement Utility to export footage onto my editing machine.
You don't.  In fact, I always recommend no special software is used.  Just Windows Explorer or Finder.  BUT...you do copy over the ENTIRE CARD.  Once on the hard drive, you do not delete, rename or otherwise alter the contents of any of those folders.
The dropped frames you're seeing are common when you do not copy over the entire card.  I am not aware of a fix.

  • PPro cs 6.0.2 Export to Tape Dropped Frames

My specs are in my profile pic (pending approval).  I just upgraded to PP cs6 and have an odd thing happening.  Has anyone else seen this?  Does anyone have an explanation?
Whenever I output to tape (FireWire to Panasonic AJ-D250, DVC Pro), I get dropped frames.  Anywhere from 2-30 but I only get them in the first five seconds or so.  After that I don't think it drops a darn thing.  I don't hear or see any stutters in my output as of yet.  I usually start with five seconds of black so I really don't care if that has drops. This is more of an oddity at this point.
What I've tried, each case the timeline was fully rendered:
Output from a different drive (single 7200 SATA)
Creating a single media file and outputting that
Outputting NOTHING (put something in the timeline, increase the work area, delete the instance)
Clean Cache & delete prefs and retry the above
I think I forgot something else but that is my list.
I reinstalled PP cs 5.5 and tried an output from that.  All was golden...no drops and smooth playing.
I'm playing back NTSC video off a 5TB RAID drive, it's not like I'm trying to play 1080i off a memory card or anything.
So that's what I've got going.  Like I said, an oddity.  The moment this starts to hinder the important stuff, the stuff that goes on air or in presentations, then I'm going to be a little more upset.

I don't use tape, but I do have a few saved links that may help

  • Logged and Transfered AVCHD footage has dropped frames or appears jerky.

Hey I just got off the phone after 2 hours with Apple care which offered no answers to this issue. My co worker is able to log and transfer without problem on his computer from my "Sony HDR CX12" AVCHD Full 1080. But both of my machines no go. I re-installed OS X 10.5.7 and all applications including FCP 6.0.6 and discovered that if you have QUICKTIME or iLife apps (i.e. iMovie, iPhoto etc... open then your doomed!!!! Dropped frames for sure on logged and transfered AVCHD footage.
I called back Apple Care and they are attempted to recreate the same system set up as I had to verify that iLife 2009 is screwing up FCP 6.0.6
I've found some other work arounds if you are having this problem. Please let me know since my case is still open with Apple Care and I would like to be able to mention that others are having issue with this.
    Rod

This is one weird post. I don't understand what you are babbling about.
I re-installed OS X 10.5.7 and all applications including FCP 6.0.6 and discovered that if you have QUICKTIME or iLife apps (i.e. iMovie, iPhoto etc... open then your doomed!!!!
COMPLETELY wrong. That couldn't be more wrong. Quicktime is the basic engine of FCP...it captures all footage as QT files. Without QT FCP would not function. And of course it works with iMovie and iPhoto installed...those are basic Apple applications. I have those on all my machines that have FCP and have had zero issues. Well, the issues you have are NOT related to having those applications installed. That is silly talk.
Now...when you import AVCHD footage, you have the choice on what CODEC you can use when you import. Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) or ProRes. AIC is nice and light, and can be played back on a firewire drive, but lack essential things like TIMECODE...and the quality isn't all that great. ProRes on the other hand is great quality and has timecode, but has a high data rate. A firewire 400 drive will not work...firewire 800 might, but raided firewire 800 like a G-Raid would be advisable. eSATA drives or internal SATA drives all the better.
iLife 09 is not screwing up FCP 6.0.6. I have iLife 09 and FCP 6.0.6 and have zero issues. most people do.

  • Dropped Frames Detected Error in CS4

I'm using a Blackmagic Design Decklink Studio video capture card. I can view and hear my content through the card. I am able to capture the video with no issues.  The moment I move the captured clips into the timeline for edit and attempt to play it, Dropped Frames error kicks in. The error tells me to check the disk speed.
    Any thoughts?

The system has two 1.5 TB drives @ 7200 RPM. I only configured the system to primarily use one since the video I was capturing in HD was no more than 2 hours. I ran a disk test supplied with the card and the info procedes:
    Disk Read: 117.5 MB/s     Disk Write: 117.5 MB/s
    8bit YUV 4:2:2
    HDTV 1080 fps     Read 29     Write 29
The video I am capturing is 1080i @ 59.94. My next step is to call the video capture manufacture but I just wanted to check it out here first.

  • Choppy and Dropping Frames with AVCHD on FCPX

    Hi,
I'm having a nightmare problem with AVCHD on my Mac Pro and FCPX.
    So I'm editing with 1080 60p from FS700, NX70, GoPro Hero3 and XR-550V.
Imported without transcoding first, so just a rewrap into QT.
Tried to play a single clip in the events or timeline in this conditons:
    - "Use original or optimized media" > High Quality
    - "Use original or optimized media" > Better Perfomance
    - "Use proxy media" (and did a transcode only for 4 clips to test)
With all those possibilities it ALWAYS plays choppy and dropping frames.
Playing in the QT (PRIVATE and choosing the clip) plays normal.
Playing in the QT proxy transcoded from FCPX plays normal.
Using Premiere CC is also normal.
Tried to ensure that the timeline is 29.97p, same thing (dropped frames choppy).
    What could it be?
    Specs:
    FCPX 10.0.9
    Mac Pro Early 2009
    Original Material in a RAID0 ~220MB/s R/W
Processor  2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  7 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

Well, it's possible for FCP to find something about either your hardware (or a third party software) problematic and for Pr to be OK with. Premiere has long been more agnostic about formats and codecs than FCP.
Unsure what to suggest. It shouldn't require the latest-greatest ;for example,  we have a four year old MBP, running Lion that can play 1080 AVCHD smoothly… although we set Preferences to better performance.

  • UT Video Codec settings for AVCHD .mts transcoding

    Howdy,
Been trying for a while to track down a jittery playback issue (as if frames are randomly held or skipped) when editing .mts files.
Jittery in PPcc and also after exporting to whatever... and especially using Youtube and Vimeo export presets.
VLC media player plays the .mts source files smoothly right off the SD card or HDD/SSD... most of the time, occasionally there is a hiccup but nothing like in PP.
The clips that do this are pretty much all of the panning clips and shot in either 24fps or 60fps 1080p.
I have seen this now on 2 different systems with different collections of .mts footage out of 2 different cameras.
Mine is a PC (running WIN7 i7 3770K 3.5Ghz, 16GB, GTX 660) and the other is a more powerful Mac with 32GB RAM (accustomed to smoothly dealing with RED footage).
I came across an Adobe suggestion to convert to a UTVideo codec ( http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/audio-video-glitches-avchd.html#id_49687 ) to deal with AVCHD... but it really didn't give much helpful info beyond the link to where it could be downloaded.
I tried the suggestion, downloaded the codec suite, made a preset in Media Encoder and transcoded, but it plays even worse than the AVCHD does natively (VLC doesn't recognize that codec for testing)
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best settings for the UT Video transcoding and/or hardware/software settings for the smoothest PP playback of .mts clips? I see in the forums here and elsewhere that lots of folks have various problems working with .mts footage in PP... I am hoping there is a functional solution beyond what I have unsuccessfully tried:
setting playback to 1/4 or 1/2
    rendering the sequance/timeline
    transcoding to .mp4/DNxHD
    clearing render files
    maximizing ram for PP usage
    closing all other apps
importing the whole 'private' folder from the SD card (which I can't seem to get PP to recognize anyway, it only will import the individual .mts files as far as I can tell)
    changed power options
turbo boost for the i7 on or off
and some other trial-and-errors gleaned from the forums that I can't recall at the moment
Any suggestions for what to try next or the proper settings for using the UT Video codec would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks/Cheers!

    Thanks Fuzzy!
Great article and it led to some more testing with a couple different lens, pan speeds, shutter speeds and frame rate combos... but still I am not finding anything definitive, I still get random, choppy/juddery playback (never seems to occur in the same place each time).
I have the frame drop indicator on and it says all is good (no dropped frames).
VLC and PotPlayer tend to play the clips off the card just fine, but does once in a while skip... a data transfer problem? I have played off the SD card and SSD main drive and my media HDD.
Caught a recent thread with others having sudden choppy playback, might be related?  http://forums.adobe.com/message/5938794#5938794
    I have PPro CC 7.2.0 (46)
But the suggestion to clear cache and reset preferences didn't seem to make a difference on my machine.
    Still ???
Going to try playing the same clips on a friends SUPER Mac and see what happens... although he sees the same thing with the .mts footage he already has.
    Onward!

  • 1080p 29.97fps dropping frames

    Hey everyone.
I can't quite figure out what it is I'm doing wrong here.
I'm taking an AVCHD MTS file recorded at 1080i/30fps and converting it to 1080p/30fps with Adobe Media Encoder CS4 using the H.264 codec at 16Mbps.
When I open the resulting MP4 file to edit in QT Pro or Premiere Pro CS4, I can't get it to play more than 8fps, it's dropping frames like crazy.
I thought it might have been the encode, but if I upload the file to YouTube it plays just fine after processing (with the new option to choose 720p or 1080p).
Previously I just converted the MTS files to 720p to upload to YouTube but now that YouTube supports 1080p, I'd like to take advantage of that but the fact that the video is so jumpy and dropping frames (not just in QT Pro, same in VLC and Adobe Premiere CS4) makes editing almost impossible.
Anyone have any ideas how I can get smooth playback of 1080p content? Am I possibly doing something wrong during the encode (I don't think that's it since it plays smoothly once uploaded to YouTube)?
Also, I have 1080p trailers from Apple saved that run just fine (albeit at 24fps).
    Thanks in advance.
P.S., having this problem on two Macs of mine, specs below:
    MacBook Pro

This can easily give one a false sense of security. Playing a file is vastly different than editing that same file, even though the necessary CODEC's are installed. Players can handle the GOP structure easily. With an NLE, the GOP's are reconstructed so that everything is I-frame for the frame-by-frame editing. This is ton more work for the CPU. Depending on the actual structure, this can be 7x to 30x more work.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
That's good to know but I'm having this frame rate problem playing files encoded with Adobe Media Encoder in stand-alone players as well.

  • FAQ: AVCHD MTS files

We have heard from a number of users who have reported an inability to apply markers to AVCHD MTS files because the .mts files were moved out of the folder structure created by the camera.
For example in this screenshot I demonstrate an MTS file that has been moved out of its original folder. Prelude can ingest this file and play it, however the Marker buttons are disabled because XMP cannot write markers for MTS files that are separated like this.
Instead it is important that the folder structure created by your AVCHD camera be maintained in its entirety. You can either copy the entire card to your computer then ingest from that, or ingest directly from the camera card and use Prelude to transfer the contents to a location on your computer.
When the entire folder structure is maintained you are able to add markers to the AVCHD clips.
If the original folder structure for your AVCHD MTS files is gone and your only option is to ingest raw MTS files you can transcode the clips using Prelude and Adobe Media Encoder by enabling the Transcode option in the Transfer Options. And if you create your own preset in AME it will appear as on option in Prelude.
The transcoded file is ingested into Prelude and you can add markers to it.

When attempting to play the .MTS files in import I'm getting the 'dropped frames' error message:
"Issues that may affect playback include available memory, disk speed, graphics performance, and processor performance.
You may be able to get better performance by doing the following:
    - Use proxy playback by changing the Media setting to 'Proxy' in the Viewer Options pop-up menu. (Requires proxy media.)
    - Optimize your source clip media."
Could the lack of RAM in this iMac actually cause the video to speed up in FCPX? (weird)

  • Projects settings for AVCHD MTS files in Adobe Premiere Elements 8

    Hello,
I have read several discussions already, about importing AVCHD MTS file in Adobe Elements (version 8), but I'm also confused a littlebit, so I would like to confirm if I'm correct.
FYI, I have a Canon Legria HFR26 camera and am using Adobe Premiere Elements 8 (with the latest updates installed).
According to the specs in the Canon instruction manual:
Videos are recorded in high definition using AVCHD specifications
    (MPEG-4/H.264 compression).
    Audio compression: Dolby Digital 2ch
The camera supports making video's in different format, but I have done it in the default SP format, which results in a resolution of 1440x1080 (50 fields per second, interlaced).
I have copied the video from the camera to my harddisk, and Windows also mentions the video's as AVCHD of 1440x1080 (Bitrate 7672kbps).
The frame rate is 25 frames/second. I assume this is correct for 50i?
So, when I import my video's into Adobe Elements 8, I select the following projects settings:
    PAL, AVCHD, HD 1080i 25
Because the description matches my video files:
    - For editing with 1440x1080i AVCHD camcorders.
    - 16:9 interlaced HD video at 25 frames per second.
    - 48kHz audio.
The video's are imported correctly and I can play them. However, as soon as I drop a video on the timeline, Adobe immediately starts background rendering the video (a red line appears on the timeline).
What I understand from some discussions, is that this shouldn't happen, because the video format doesn't match the project settings. On the other hand, I have also read that for Adobe Elements 8 this is normal behaviour and it always start background rendering AVCHD video's.
Is this expected behaviour or should I chance my projects settings or maybe even convert my video files to a different format?
    Thanks,

The ability to work natively with AVCHD files was not added until version 10, Michiel. So you'll still have to render while you work in version 8.

  • CS6 problems AVCHD MTS files

Forgive for bad English. I hope, the thought is clear. I got OEM Production Premium CS6 with MXO2 mini. I received a problem known for all... My problems when playing AVCHD MTS were solved by program converter installation, in fact, additional codecs. Now everything "flies"!
    Win7, 32Gb RAM
Details ask. Better in Russian :-)

(weird)
