Dropped Frames using ADVC-300

I'm trying to import video into Final Cut Pro using a Canopus ADVC-300. The clips I'm trying to import are long, over an hour sometimes. I always get dropped frames after like 10 minutes and it stops the recording. Is there something I can do to fix this so that the frames don't drop. I don't have a ton of stuff running while I do this. I'm not doing anything else except maybe surfing the web. Thanks in advance.

#1 choice: internal SATA drive formatted as Mac OS Extended
#2 choice: external SATA (eSATA) drive formatted as Mac OS Extended
#3 choice: external Firewire drive formatted as Mac OS Extended
Do NOT use a USB connection. USB transfers data in packets (short bursts) and FCP needs a sustained data flow like that offered by SATA or Firewire.

  • Dropped Frames Using JPEG Codec In Final Cut 5

    Hello,
Can anyone out there please tell me if they have had any problems with DROPPED FRAMES using the JPEG codec whilst editing a sequence of JPEG stills?
I'm using Final Cut Pro 5 on a Duel GHZ G5 with a 3TB Fibre Channel media drive (Very, very fast. Can easily work with HD and not fall over) The kit also has a Blackmagic SD card which handles the JPEG codec.
I've tried everything I can think of, changing settings, checking hardware and stamping my feet. My product support tells me that Apple doesn't support the JPEG codec and editing sequences with it will cause Final Cut to drop frames. Has anyone else over come or had this problem? The sequences also use .wav & .aiff audio files. The show I'm editing is animation so there is no capturing and editing of hours and hours of rushes, it's all individual files.
Any help or advice out there?
    Thanks in advance!
    Ben
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

We've been trying that, exporting all the individual files as a single quicktime movie and using that to edit, but our problem is that due to the nature of the production (An animated television series) all work in progress renders we get are JPEG.
This is because the software we're using to animate with (Celaction 2d) can only output un-compressed or JPEG Quicktime movies. To keep our hard disk space down (Even though we have plenty) it'll be great to fix the JPEG problem once and for all. Otherwise I guess it'll be re-rendering all the JPEG movies into another codec? Which is time consuming.
Anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know of any issues using .wav files?
    Thanks again!

  • HELP using advc-300 on old bad quality analog tapes

ok here's my problem, this isn't directly a FCP question but i think you guys can help me out. I just bought an advc-300 hoping that I would be able to capture some very old 8mm tapes that have a lot of video noise and "fuzz" on them. I thought that the advc would be able to get rid of the fuzz and noise but it seems like its not doing anything at all. I tried messing with the image settings on the program that they provided, but it doesn't really do anything but change the color/hue/saturation ect. I am at a loss. Yes, the advc works beautifully as a dedicated analog to dv converter, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything in the slightest to fix the fuzziness and horizozontal lines ect. on these old tapes. is there anything i can do or are these tapes junk?
    Macbook pro 17'', G5 1.8 single   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

The advc300 has a built in time base corrector, but its not as good as a stand-alone one. A TBC can only do so much however and will most likely not be able to remove the noise and "fuzz" your experiencing.
I recommend outsourcing the tapes to a facility that specializes in film preservation/restoration (if you deem the tapes are worth the cost). Film restoration is a delicate process and there's only so much you can do on your end.

  • After Effects Ram Preview Drops Frames , Using Strangely Too Much Ram

    System Specs :
         CPU : Core i7 4770k
         Memory : 16 GB DDRIII
         Graphic Card : GTX 770 4GB RAM
         Storage : 256 GB SSD + 2 TB HDD
         OS : Windows 7 SP1
         Using After Effects CC 12.2.1.5
NOTE : NOT ANY ADDITIONAL HARDWARE IS ATTACHED TO MY PC . NO SOUND RELATED EQUIPMENT NOR CAPTURE CARD NOR ANY THING ELSE
    Hi there
As you Already Don't know I'm an After effects Specialist Using it for quite long time . There is an Ancient Problem with CS6 CC versions . I have a short Small size 1080p Video , about 8 MB , I drag it into project panel and then put it into timeline hence it creates a sequence . There are no Effects and nothing added to timeline , just a small simple video . The Strange Problem is when I click "0" for ram preview , The video starts playing and the green bar above timeline starts to fill . When Ram preview Finishes and plays the video from beginning I See there are several frames Between which are not being loaded to Ram ! The video plays RGB color bar instead of main video and when I check the Green bar above Timeline I see that those frames are being dropped and there is no Green bar above them !
I have had this problem several times before but this time it is too important and the problem should be solved . What is obvious is that some frames are not being rendered or are being deleted after render !
Another Strange problem is that when I open Task manager , It shows AE uses around 10 GB ! of RAM when I press "0" for Ram previewing this video !
So there is a Logical explanation here , Somehow when I do ram preview this video it uses extra ordinary too much ram so AE is unable to load the full video (8 MB) into Ram and hence deletes some of frames .
most of my videos have not this problem and use acceptable amount of ram .I've had this issue with some of my videos till now .
Listen carefully : "This has nothing to do with AE preferences or low memory or plugins . because there is nothing wrong with any individual components of may hardware or software . I have far more than enough RAM for a 8MB video . My Memory has no hardware or software problem . I tested them and if there was any problem with memory or other hardware that should have affected other applications . I have the most recent AE version . I have the most Recent windows updates and drivers . I have a Clean virus free system , and as a computer engineer this strange AE problem is rarely caused by viruses , trust me . I have not any hardware instead of ones a normal PC has . I have not any problem with my whole entire system configuration because I have benchmarked my PC with several up to date softwares . I have tested my PC with almost any STRESS TESTING solutions available for really long period of time , 3 days by IDA64 . Not any driver conflict , dll missing , registry problem have been discovered , as I know perfectly how to solve them ."
I asked some of my friend whom are expert in AE . I handed them my videos and Watched ALL OF THEM HAD THE SAME ISSUE ! So the problem isn't related to my Local PC . What i believe is that there is some malfunctioning or miss coded part in AE source code that decides to reserve such a huge strange amount of ram for such a tiny 8MB video . The point is that the AE works fine , no crash or any problem report . So the AE it Self decides to allocate such huge amount of ram and thinks it is correct ! So I think this is a work around that AE developers in adobe are using to bypass a problem or conflict ! by Using more amount of RAM . I think that there might be some miss understanding between the AE and my installed codec . I installed MEGA CODEC PACK on my PC to enable some new codec supports , and so are some of Windows default de/encoders changed to new ones . I think there shouldn't be any problem But there is something wrong between AE and de/encoder modules !
Please any one with any suggestion , I really appreciate your advices .

    ###UPDATED###
Well thank you guys for your patience ...
as you considered I forgot to mention the codec itself and other stuff ...
The video is in 1080p , 35 sec long , it is a green screen shot , this video is directly downloaded from YouTube and plays perfectly on all tested PCs . here are detailed info :
    Format                                   : MPEG-4
    Format profile                          : Base Media
    File size                                 : 8.55 MiB
    Duration                                 : 34s 993ms
Overall bit rate mode                : Variable
    Overall bit rate                         : 2 050 Kbps

    Format/Info                              : Advanced Video Codec
    Format profile                           : [email protected]
    Codec ID                                 : avc1
Codec ID/Info                            : Advanced Video Coding
    Bit rate                                    : 1 927 Kbps
    Width                                      : 1 920 pixels
    Height                                     : 1 080 pixels
    Frame rate mode                      : Constant
    Frame rate                               : 30.000 fps
    Color space                              : YUV
    Chroma subsampling                 : 4:2:0
    Bit depth                                  : 8 bits
    Scan type                                 : Progressive
NOTICE : This video is just for testing the lighting and etc , and so the Sampling and other specs are not considered for broadcast .
I think you hit the point ! Thats K-lite codec pack installed on every machine which the video is tested on ! The point is whats wrong with it ?! I have had never ever any problem with this codec pack !!!
The deadly question : So what are the alternative ways to work with codecs that AE doesn't support ?! because installing codec looks simple and sufficient !

  • Dropped frames on Xserve RAID upgraded w/750GB drives.

I'm capturing in 10-bit uncompressed standard definition 720x480. I just upgraded one side of my Apple XRAID, (connected directly via fibre channel) with seven, 750GB hard drives from Apple, drives designed for the XRAID, (came with there own sleds.)
Current Xserve RAID firmware version is at version 1.5.1/1.51c
Before the upgraded drives, no issues with dropped frames, (drives 1-7) the other side of the same RAID has no problems, (currently running 250GB drives, drives 8-14.) All sleds are populated with drives of the same capacity, (respective to each side.)
The drives were formated using the Xserve RAID Admin software and mounted using Apples Disk Utilities, Journaling turned off. The final formated capacity of the RAID on drives 1-7 is 4.1TB.
When I capture to the drives on the upgrade side, I get dropped frames. When capturing to the other side, no issues, works great. I checked the settings for performance and they are the same for both sides, as follows:
Use Controller Write Cashe - ON
Allow Host Cashe Flushing - OFF
Use Drive Write Cashe - ON
Use Steady Streaming Mode - OFF
    Read Prefetch: 128 stripes (8 MB/disk)
My capture box is an AJA I/o and has never given me dropped frames till now, but only on the side of the RAID that has the new 750GB drives. I also have another RAID that uses 500GB drives on both sides and it work just fine as well, (no dropped frames) using the same performance settings in XRAID utilities.
Any suggestion on why these new Apple drives modules are dropping frame would be very much appreciate. Again 7 new 750GB drives from Apple w/sleds having dropped frame issues.

I'm capturing in 10-bit to avoid loss of quality from analog sources like BetaCam SP as well as line 21 must be part of the captured file, because it contains line 21 for captioning. Eight bit has a banding issue that I can't have in the final product and 10-bit doesn't have this issue.
Source quality is maintained completely when working in 10-bit uncompressed, as well as the captioning data that I need, which is stripped out of the captured video latter. Captioning software can read line 21 of the raster area, of the captured file.
Source video is from BetaCam SP, DVC Pro and DVCam.
The RAID is an Apple Xserve RAID, connected via Fibre channel directly, (no xsan.)
I also create high quality QuickTime Streaming files from these source files, the higher the quality of the source video the the better the streaming files look when created.
I have never had any problem capturing till I installed these new drives from Apple.
The RAID is as stated above, is an Apple Xserve RAID, connect via a fibre channel card in a Mac Pro 3.0GHz tower, (no xsan is used, due to connecting directly to the XRAID.)

  • What is the best setup to encode h264 (1080p) and to avoid stuttering, dropped frames?

    Hello,
What is the best setup with AME to encode h264 (1080p) and to avoid stuttering, dropped frames using a classic video player .I am looking to have the smoothest experience (in fast horizontal motion for ex!).It also can be another format (intra codec’s etc...)it doesn’t matter as long as readable by most players.      Anyone’s to tell his favorites presets for that?
    thanks

I should have included the following:
1.) Why can't I make a silent project in GarageBand? I have to instead find a project with a long enough song, make an "iLife preview" of it (see (2) below), copy it from the iMovie Music and Sound Effects browser to the end of the movie, and then open the audio panel and turn the volume to zero. And all this so that video websites don't get confused by a soundtrack that starts in mid-movie.
2.) Why do I have to "render" them by the following process: Double-click a song in the iMovie Music and Sound Effects browser. You get a dialog box saying "The project "The Great Race" cannot be used because it was not prepared with an iLife preview. Would you like to open "The Great Race" in GB so you can save it with an iLife preview?" What I don't understand is why this new thing was introduced and why I have to do it via iMovie.

  • Tips for using FCE with an ADVC-300?

    Some questions if I may:
    - Any settings I may want to change?
    - And, if I make alterations in Picture Controller 300, how does FCE now to use them? Do I run both at same time?
    - If they want a DVD with TV-Quality what settings do I use for export? Just a QT movie in H.264 or anything else? Then, drop into iDVD to burn?
    - if someone wants just a "computer-viewing" quality, suggested settings?
    - if someone wants just YouTube - can I cheat and drop into iMovie (what export first)?
Working on capturing a VCR tape right now - and quality is more of an issue vs a DV tape.
Thx for your help - total newbie here to both but I'm not afraid to tinker to get the hang of it... would SO appreciate it!
    Alexa

You should limit your post to a single question.
Regarding Picture Controller, it sets how the ADVC-300 works. You would not run it at the same time as FCE, nor does FCE 'know' how to use the settings. The settings affect how the ADVC performs its conversion & video cleanup during conversion of your analog video to digital. The basic settings you need for converting VHS tapes are:
-Convert to DV-NTSC (assuming you are in North America)
    -Locked audio = on
    -IRE = 7.5
Only connect or disconnect the FW cable between the ADVC and your Mac when both the ADVC and your Mac are turned off _and disconnected from all power_.
In FCE, select the *DV NTSC DV Converter* easy setup. Make sure the ADVC is toggled to analog-in and video/audio is being fed from your VCR. In FCE, use *Capture Now* to capture your video. And be aware that you will not hear the audio while capturing; this is normal.

  • How to tell if video is drop frame or non-drop frame in Encore?  Need info to use correct SCC file.

    Hi,
Thanks in advance. I am using Encore DVD 2.0 to add closed captions to video. I have both a drop frame SCC file and a non-drop frame SCC file. How can I tell which one to use? Can I tell from the way the timecode looks on the timeline? Do I look at the timeline timecode or the source timecode? For example, in a random area of video the timeline says 00;02;50;24 while the source says 00:02:50:20.
    Thanks.

Thanks jbowden and Jim for your help. Although I'm still not real clear how Encore notes DF vs NDF (more on that below), I got my problem solved.
Regarding DF vs NDF in Encore DVD...There doesn't seem to be a real consistent method of identifying which is which. For example, Jim suggested that I look in the Project panel for the colons vs semicolons. There, the video file timecode was shown as xx;xx;xx;xx with semicolons, apparently suggesting that it is DF. However, the timeline and audio file listed in the project panel also showed semicolons in the timecode. Then, down on the timeline, the timeline was shown as xx;xx;xx;xx while right next to that it said "Source xx:xx:xx:xx" with colons! So, if I go by the project panel, the video is DF. If I go by what it says down in the timeline, the video is NDF. As it turns out, subtitles and CC only match up if I use the NDF versions of them, not with the DF versions, which indicates that my file was NDF. So, in the end, I'd say that the way the timecode is represented in the project panel didn't mean anything, at least not in this case.

  • Capturing Hi8 analog thru aja  using DV setting keeps dropping frames

I am capturing from a RCA hi 8 camera using Capture preset DV NTSC 48 khz but I am dropping frames any ideas

In an attempt to troubleshoot the component that is causing the problem, try capturing with all the same settings as you have now, but set the capture scratch to the system drive. This is not the best option to do as normal practice, but if it works on the system drive, then it's not FCP, but either the drive, or the port that is faulty. If it captures successfully to the system drive, next step is to go out and get another hard drive and connect it. If it fails, most likely you have a bad Firewire card. If it works, it most likely is the RAID, and you can troubleshoot that with other means.

  • My macbook does not have a firewire port. Is there any kind of adapter that will allow me to use my advc 300 (which need to plug in to the FireWire port)?

My macbook does not have a firewire port. Is there any kind of adapter that will allow me to use my advc 300 (which need to plug in to the FireWire port)?

Firewire, USB and the recent thunderbolt use completely different protocols, therefore there are no adapters for mutually adapting them, just a computer, which allows connecting them, and will work as an interface. For example, if you have an external disk in an enclosure with only FW connection and another one with USB connection, just your mac, having both, allows their interconnectivity.
If your mac does not have FW (the brief alu MB series, Air) you cannot connect a FW device, if only FW port is there.

  • Dropped frames while using multi bit rates in Flash Media Encoder 3

I’m using the Adobe Flash Media Encoder 3 to stream live video to a host computer at 200 Kbps.  At the same time, I’m saving a copy to my hard drive at 350 Kbps. The live stream signal seems to be ok.  The saved stream has dropped frames.  Total bandwidth is about 615 Kbps.  I’ve looked at performance marking software to see if my hard drive is slow and to check my CPU speed. I can’t see what I need to save a better copy and still keep the live stream.
Is this just a need for more CPU speed?
The encoder is on a Dell Optiplex 360 Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 @2.53GHz with 3GB RAM.  The hard drive is a 152GB IDE ST3160815AS.  It has write caching enabled on the disk.

I saw your request for the log file in a different post.  This is one of them that was made from my encoding.  I don't see any answers in it.

  • FCP 7 drops frames.  Is there a way to fix this using Mountain?

I use FCP 7 (won't touch FCP X) and just got a new iMac computer running Mountain Lion.  I've read there is some people who are having compatibility problems.   I'm seeing dropped frames in all my footage.   Is there a way to fix this?
    Bryan

May be a non domain joined machine configured with local DNS is trying to contact an AD for authentication or it can be someone trying to use this PC for malicious purpose. I would suggest use wireshark or netmon to capture the traffic to analyze the source
& destination for this machine which is trying to contact AD. I would also suspect the error can be due to infection.

  • Dropped Frames w/ Ae Dynamic Link Comps Using BMD (on Playback)

    Hey guys,
This problem started exibiting itself a couple weeks ago. Hoping for some feedback regarding possible problems other than just bad performance with my BMD Hardware.
The following is the system it's occuring on:
    2009 2.93Ghz/16GB 8-Core MacPro
    Adobe CS5 - Latest Updates
Internal Raid 0 - Footage Files
    Internal 7200RPM - Project Files
    Internal 7200RPM - OS
(all drives at 50% or more current capacity)
    Stock GT120GFX
    GTX285
Blackmagic Decklink Extreme 3D to HDLinkPro
2 Monitors (1 to each GFX card)
1 Plasma monitor out of the Decklink
Now that's out of the way, here's the scenario:
Using Blackmagic Design sequence presets in Premiere and Dyanamic Linking AE comps in the Premiere sequence . Playing back the sequence results in CS5 stopping playback because "Dropped Frames Detected"
This ONLY occurs in the following situations:
    - with any BMD preset
    - only unrendered (yellow) timeline comps
Rendering the timeline (sot it's green) results in uninterrupted playback
The comps have no problems in AE
Premiere exhibits no playback issues outside of BMD presets
Premiere exhibits no playback issues with other footage
All fingers point to something internal when in a BMD preset. But could a drive be failing? Something else?
    Thanks.

Shouldn't this be normal behavior for a Dynamic Link AE comp? If it's dynamically linked, it means it's not rendered, so Premiere is trying to play the AE comp in realtime (like hitting the play button in AE without doing a RAM preview). If the comp in AE is simple enough that it will play realtime in AE without doing a RAM preview, but still will not play realtime in Premiere on a BMD timeline, it could be do to the RGB to YUV conversion. AE only outputs in RGB, while a Decklink card (unless otherwise set in the preferences) outputs in YUV, so it needs to do a RGB/YUV conversion when playing the AE comp, and that can slow things down.
I use a Decklink card and I find if I have a Dynamic Link comp in Premiere that stutters on playback, it will sometimes then play realtime after the initial playblack. I'm guessing Premiere might be caching the frames similar to an AE RAM preview.
Todd, I believe the playback resolution setting is ignored on a BMD timeline.

  • Dropped Frames Warning after matching clip settings using Animation codec.

I have a 720 x 540 px animation exported as a QT movie from a 3D program, using the animation codec. I'm bringing it into Final Cut 6, placing it on the timeline and allowing FC to change its sequence settings to match those of the clip so it won't need to be rendered.
If I duplicate the clip several times, placing the duplicates back to back, the sequence plays w/ no problem. If I introduce a different clip, a generated slug or even leave a gap on the timeline I get the Dropped Frames Warning on the very last frame of the clip, right before the play head would move to the first frame of the new clip, or the slug, or the gap where there's nothing on the timeline.
If I initially bring in a clip that's been compressed using PNG and have Final Cut change its sequence settings to match those of the clip, everything plays flawlessly. Same thing using None compression. Plays fine. If I leave FC at its default settings and render the clips after I place them on the timeline, they play fine and I don't get the warning. I only get the warning when I have FC match the settings of a clip using the Animation codec.
I'm running 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon w/ 16 GB Ram. My boot drive is an SSD and my video media is stored on a 2nd internal 7200 RPM HD.
I did read on another forum that the Animation codec tends not to perform so well in FC. I'm wondering if that's the problem or if it's hardware related?

    Turn the warning off:
Go to the menu Final Cut Pro > User Preferences and on the General Pane, uncheck the Report dropped frames during playback box. Then click OK.
The warning only alerts you that FCP can't call up and display the frames fast enough to play in real time, so it is dropping frames - during playback.
When you are done editing, you will export the finished file from FCP into the deliverable format you want, during that process every frame of your timeline will be added to the exported file.
And yes, playing back in Animation Codec is  real heavy lifting for FCP.

  • Is my comp. screwed up? Use to work, now drops frames on capture.

is my comp. screwed up? Use to work, now drops frames on capture.
    OK.
    My G5
    mac osx 10.4.9
    processor 1.8 GHZ
    Memory 1.75 GD DDR SDRAM
started to be unable to digitize footage.
It says there are dropped frame or problems with the source tape. The same tape, using the same deck, same firewire (400-800port) work FINE on my husbands G5
So I think it has to be my computer. I was working on FCP 4, and thought maybe when I installed FCP 6 it would magically get better.
So I got fcp 6 and I still have the same problem....
any help would be much appreciated.

99 times out of 100 it's that your scratch disk can't keep up with the captures... what are you capturing to? Should be a disk other than your internal startup disk. Is this DV material?
