Dropped iBook G4 (no damage), Now Kernel Panics

I recently dropped my 4 year old iBook G4 (while it was sleeping) onto a wood table from about a foot up. When I tried restarting it, I kept getting kernel panics. So I completely reinstalled the OS (Leopard). Now I can do most tasks on the computer, but I still get kernel panics on a regular basis. I think there is clearly a hardware issue, although there is apparently NO physical damage to the machine. There is nothing wrong with the hard drive, which is the only mechanical device that could possibly be damaged by a drop, right? Reinstalling Leopard didn't really solve the problem. (I'm looking for an Apple Hardware Test disc to see if that will help diagnose the problem...)
Any words of advice? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Here are the details for the kernel panic (after I reinstalled 10.5 -- I haven't updated to 10.5.6 yet):

A drop could damage the motherboard causing a break or intermittent break. As the iBook heats and cools the connection can be intermittent causing it to work and fail randomly.

  • Repeated iMac Problems, Display Issues now Kernel Panics

I’m lost on what’s wrong with my 2008 iMac and I think I just have to bring it back into Apple for a third time to have it repaired. But something is obviously not working that is causing these issues.
About a month ago, my computer began showing heavy pixilation, flickering images and the on-screen graphics. The computer appeared to keep working in the background from what I could tell so I came to conclusion that it must be the graphics card that’s failing and I’ll need to have it looked at.
My 2008 iMac was custom-built by Apple with the Nvidia GeForce 8800GS that was offered as an upgrade option. There have been several posts on the display and graphics discussion board about that graphics card along with other postings other places about the problems the Nvidia GeForce 8-series had.
The display problems I mention above would not happen immediately, it would happen as the computer warmed up and was used for 3-5 minutes.
Anyway I brought my computer into Apple explained to them what I believed was the problem and the Apple Store technician agreed with me. Because I did not purchase AppleCare, it cost me $400 and a week without my iMac to have that card replaced.
I got the computer back two weeks ago and everything seemed fine. It was working as it always had. I even was running SMC Fan Control in order to keep the computer as cool as I could (the Nvidia problem was related to overheating).
But this morning, this is what I woke up to:
    http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7436/photoijr.jpg
The computer now has a semi-permanent pixilation when it starts up (as suppose to the pixilation 3-5 minutes into use). But more worrisome now is I cannot start up the computer without it going into a kernel panic. I tried resetting the PRAM, I tried starting in safe mode. The only thing I haven’t tried yet is booting from an external HD which I will try this evening (to hopefully isolate it if it’s hardware or a software problem).
The Apple Hardware Test has been unhelpful. When it originally failed three weeks ago, the test showed nothing and this morning when I ran it (permanent pixilation and all), it showed nothing. I feel like if it was a software issue the pixilation would have disappeared during the hardware test because that’s not an OS-X based program.
Here are my specs on this computer:
2008 iMac 24" 2.8ghz Intel Core Duo, 4 gigs of RAM (Crucial Purchased, I have original sticks somewhere), 1 TB HD, Nvidia GeForce 8800GS.

Hi, just to update you, I came home today and did a few things that didn't seem to solve my Mac's problems:
    - I booted up from my firewire "safe" drive that I keep a copy os x on to see if I had a corrupted hard drive or something. It booted into the kernel panic I described above.
    - I also swapped out the crucial RAM for Apple's factory RAM. It also booted into the Kernel Panic.
In both incidents, the display issues didn't go away. Now instead of pixelization i have vertical bars running in a pattern across my screen.
I'm currently trying to boot onto the OS X CD at this point to see if I could do a reinstall. It's taking quite awhile to boot into that.
With that in mind, I think we're still having graphics card issues or more seriously some logic board problem.

  • IPod Restore failed, now Kernel Panic when connect to Mac

My iPod is a little older and has had trouble updating though the iPod Updaters so in order to get the latest updater on my iPod I've had to just restor the iPod using that specific updater. iPod Updater froze during my last restore and now I have incomplete software on my iPod and connecting it to my Mac results in immediate kernel panic. How can I get my iPod back to a usable state?
    Thanks.

Just got back from trying this idea and IT WORKS. For people that might have this problem, I booted from the CD/DVD and lauched Disk Utility and did a Repair Disk. I did it twice actually for good measure. Afterwards I booted back to the System Folder on the HD and I performed a restore of my iPod using the iPod Updater 2005-06-26.app updater. I've read that my whatever generation iPod works best with that one (I have the click wheel with the 4 buttons above it).
    Thanks for all your help.

  • 10.4.5 to 10.4.6; now Kernel Panic during boot

I upgraded my G4 tower last thursday to 10.4.6 and then shut it down for the weekend. Now eveytime I try to boot, I get a Kernel Panic either during the boot or within a few minutes / seconds of logging in.
Is this something that can be fixed with the Disk Utility? Could it be a hardware issue?
    Any help would be appreciated

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Kernel panics can be either hardware or hardware driver issues, or directory issues. If your data is backed up, you can try repairing the directory. If your data is not backed up, recovering from such a scenario can be difficult.

  • All fine and now kernel panic once a week?

After years of never having seen one, I am getting kernel panics about once a week. They seem to occur when I am online. I am running OS 10.6.8 (yes, I know) and have had no problems. I had been running Norton Antivirus (yes, I now know about that too) without incident for a few years but have now removed it. Otherwise nothing has changed except for whenever the last Apple system update was. I am currently up to date, OS not withstanding.

Well, I've run pretty much every test that I have access to and still can't really pin point the cause of the kernel panics that I am seeing.
So I'm going to post the last panic log and see what people think.

    Hi Dave,
I've had really similar problems for many months, and I think Apple Tech Support found a solution. Check out this article:
    Charlie
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302021
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: Kernel panic when using Internet Sharing with a dialup connection
If you have Internet Sharing turned on and are using a dialup modem (such as the Apple internal modem) in Mac OS X 10.4 to 10.4.2, you may experience a kernel panic. During a kernel panic, you will see a message that says you need to restart your computer.
To avoid this issue in the future, deselect the "Use TCP header compression" modem option as follows:
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. Click Network.
    3. From the Show pop-up menu, choose Internal Modem (or other modem if you're not using the Apple internal modem).
    4. Click the PPP Options button.
    5. Deselect the "Use TCP header compression" checkbox.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Click Apply Now.
    8. Quit System Preferences.

  • Time Machine Not Recognized. Now, Kernel Panics

A storm is brewing and I have no idea how to contain it. First, after April 26th, my Time Machine wasn't recognized... this was the date of my last backup, and I didn't notice it for a few days, and only confirmed it two days ago. I would plug it in, and the drive would get hot as though it were mid-backup, and stay that way. It doesn't appear in Disk Utility, it doesn't appear in the Finder, nowhere. I've taken EXCELLENT care of this Toshiba 640GB drive, and had it for two years. It was backing up just fine, and has been sitting on my desk for a few weeks.
My first kernel panics began 4/30, and I've had three, with the last two both yesterday. In order:

There's some stuff on my time machine drive I would really, REALLY like to get. I took it in to the Apple authorized service center here, and they had no idea.
My drive does not work on other Mac computers, and does not even show up. Apparently just the fact it's plugged into one makes it boot down slower... the tech guy noticed this, anyway. When plugged into a Windows, the drive itself is recognized, but only some partitions... I'm not really clear on what the guy was implying, something along these lines though. He was pointing to various partitions which were different colors, using some Windows utility, but he couldn't make any significance or conclusions based on it.
They suggested I back everything up and reinstall my OS, or possibly bring it back Monday, since I wouldn't get it back til at least then anyway (weekend). As for the drive and the data on it, I have no idea, but I'm SURE they're related to the kernel panics. There are coicidences, and then there are coincidences.
If I can just get at the Time Machine contents for a few minutes, that would be enough. Then, obviously, figuring out wth is going on. Would appreciate anyone to help me out with this, tremendously!
    Cheers,
    Clarence

I would have posted in 10.6.8 TimeMachine area.
You might also want to have more than one backup set.
Not sure until or without some trial and error who is going to scan and see something in a profile log dump.
USB cables and power adapters and even case, things fail that is a given and just a matter of when, not if. All the eggs though in one basket some get broken.
Whether it will get worse or the drive has bad sectors and I/O errors can be investigated and learned.

  • Kernel panic at start up

Tiger freezed while usage, I shut it down and tried to reboot Tiger (10.4.3), but now kernel panic appears every time I start my mac with "... ... hanging here" message log.
I already tried to repair permissions with disk utility in tier installation dvd. According to it there were nothing to repair. Also tried safe boot with no luck.
I don´t have an external hard drive or other mac to help with this problem.
Should I just reinstall tiger? There are some not backupped files in the hard drive, so clean install is not an option. Should I go with the simple install or archive and install?
I´m open to any other suggestions too. I just want my tiger to roar again. I would truly appreciate your help.

    Hi Aleksi_M,
Kernal Panics are very serious usually (But no always) related to a hardware problem. Common cases are logic board problems and RAM problems. I would not recommend re installing Tiger but I would strongly recommend that you take your PowerBook into your Local Apple Store or Phone Apple if that works better for you. Better to be safe than sorry with these things and Apple may be able to save your data.
I also have experienced consistently reoccurring kernal panic problem where I could not get the computer to boot. This was down to the logic board. I took it into an Apple Store and it was repaired in 1 week. (Had the part been in-store they could have done it on the spot)
    Hope this helps
    Sam

  • Ready to dump my G5.  Please help me before I do!  Kernel panics gallore!

I have been experiencing kernel panics everytime I startup my G5 for the last 5 months. It started as an occassional event until it became an every time event. I got to the point that the computer would not start even after trying 10+ times successfully. I only managed to do it by booting up with a bootable CD or with my backup Firewire drive. I was unable to boot up with the Firewire drive when I selected it as a startup disk though. In any case, the kernel panics always occur at startup. I ran all kinds of diagnostics including Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro and Disk Utilities. All 3 always showed that my computer has no problems. Every test passed. I repaired permissions countless times, followed all different advices on how to deal with kernel panics, etc. I finally decided to erase my drive by zeroing and start from scratch. Before re-installing Tiger I ran diagnostics again to make sure nothing was wrong with the drive and the rest of my computer and all tests passed. I finally re-installed Tiger and to my frustration the problem continues even when all I have loaded in my computer is Tiger. I am able to startup without getting a kernel panic the first time after I have re-installed Tiger (have done it 3-4 times in the last week or so) but then on a second trial I get back to the same situation. I forgot to mention that I got the panics even while re-installing Tiger and while running Techtool Pro. I had to perform hard startups several times before I was able to complete the tests and re-install Tiger. In most cases whenever I get the kernel panics if I don't do a hard startup my diks accelerates very rapidly and gets the fans running at full and very noisy speed. Throughout this whole deal all the diagnostics tools have been unable to identify the problem. Do I need to trash my computer? As far as I am concerned I have tried everything I can think of for the last 3 months to no avail. The situation kept deteriorating with time so it sounds like a hardware problem and as if one of the internal parts is just dying a slow death. Any words of wisdom will do. I have owned close to 7 Macs over the years (this one is about 2 years old) and this is the first time I have felt like trashing one. Please Help!!

    Hello!
I had the same problem once - it was the Ram, but Hardware Test didn´t get it. It just said everythings ok - So for testing if the Ram is ok, I put out all the Ram that was in and always tried 2 slices at one time. Well it works fine to check when you have more than 2 slices of Ram, but if not maybe you´ve got friends to borrow some working Ram from them. After I´ve tried that I found out that there were 2 slices out of 6 damaged. After replacing the damaged no Kernell Panics again.
But I hope you have a less costs problem!
    Yours,
    Jörg

  • RAID mirror with software utility caused kernel panic every time

Using disc utility to make a mirror of 2 drives, click create and i get kernel panic and have to power off machine. if i try to start the machine with either of the two disks in it (together or individually) i get same kernel panic and have to power off.
The disks are in an external storage array (sonnet d500). I have a second storage array with raided disks in and i have raided disk inside the mac too. these all work fine..
originally 2 weeks ago i had the 2 disks working in a group of 4 disks set as a mirror of 2 striped disks. One disk in this setup failed and with this config you can never 'recover'or rebuild it - you get a degraded mirror and you can backup the data, but you must completely rebuild the raid again as the mirror of stripes never lets you add a new disk in again.period. not good.
I replaced the failed disk and rebuilt the mirror of stripes. this lasted a day until a second disk failed (all 4 were bought at same time so i was kind of expecting that to happen once one failed).
i replaced the second faulty hdd and thought about my disk usage and decided i would not make another mirror of stripes and i would make 2 mirrors instead for safe-ish storage and then transfer data to a striped raid set for editing from instead of direct from the mirror of stripes volume.
i tried to delete the raid but got a kernel panic
if i started the machine with any of the 4 disks i would get a kernel panic.
i moved the disks one by one into an older G5 running Tiger and managed to erase the raid info on 2 of them. The two new ones had some strange raid info and the Tiger machien thought there was an extra disk in the machine and would not erase or partition or allow me to destroy the raid whatever i tried.
I will be moving these now into an old XP PC to try to erase the boot records etc and erase them to be able to use them again in either mac pro or G5. painful..
so.. i ended up with 2 erased drives and have 2 new drives with dodgy raid info that causes kernel panics on the leopard machine and wont go in the Tiger machine.
The two erased drives are what ive now been trying to use in the mac pro to create a mirror - this now caused kernel panics when creating the mirror to start with and when installed in the machine at all. so i will be erasing them again in the tiger machine soon (its busy erasing with zeros another new disk that i added to the Tiger machine 2 weeks ago which seems to have some fault when raided!!! but thats another story).
so.. is anyone else having problems with creating basic mirror in 10.5.4 or is it just me??
i have a sonnet tempo e4p card with 2 external sata disk enclosures, latest firmware for the e4p card. all other previously existing raid volumes are working fine. i have one set of 2 striped disks, one set of 3 striped disks and one set of 2 stripes which are mirrored - all happy and working fine. but i cant make a new mirror of 2 disks...
I phoned Apple support and they said all raid info was kept on the disk itself and nothing on the actual machine and suggested i take the machine to an apple care centre for some tlc (although its disk i am having a problem with). since all my other disk arrays work fine i don't really want to rebuild the whole machine from scratch if i can avoid it.
Any suggestions of what i can try ??

well it turns out the new disk i bought just werent any good. my g5 powermac raid mirror issue was related to one new disk with lots of bad blocks (speed tools showed that up) so i have learnt my lesson on cheap non raid disks for raid..
am waiting on a couple of new ultrastar enterprise disks to tuen up so i can go back to the macpro and try to add a mirror again.
i am still stuck wih several new disks that i cannot format now in the macpro on leopard or on the g5 powermac with tiger.
ive tried softraid and that cant do it, speedtools pcformat util cant do it, disk utility crashes when i try to eras them and diskutil from termianl starts then doenst get anywhere and my pc sata card doesnt work so my last resort pc option still doesnt help me clear the partition map on these drives - ones that diskutility on leopard made for me - and drives which still cause kernel panics on the macpro if i put them in it..
here is what diskutil says on my g5:
    /dev/disk0
    #: type name size identifier

disk0 is the one with the bad partition info.
it thinks it has a double raid as the console shows on startup:
(both store45 and cache it thinks are on this disk - cache was my old mirror of stripes set on other machine, store45 was new name for my mirror, so seems like it hadnt deleted the original raid partition info before making new info which now kernel panics)

so currently i have 2 new 500gb disks which cant be partitioned back to anything at all on either machine. looks like i will have to buy a new pc to reformat them..
any suggestions of how to clear the partition map info and get them back to freespace ??

  • Help needed in interpreting panic log from kernel panic error

My G4 iBook has started giving me kernel panic errors, often immediately after starting up. I haven't installed any new software or RAM recently. I've done a clean system install (completely clean - not an archive and install) then downloaded the combo update for 10.4.11. But the kernel panics are still happening from time to time. I've looked at the panic log, but it means nothing to me, so I'm hoping someone can help:

I didn't see anything that would indicate a specific problem. Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html
Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • 10.4.10 - kernel panic w/ wireless?

    Hi,
Got yesterday few kernel panics releated to wireless driver (see bellow). This started happening after installing 10.4.10. Sundenly, I've got problems with wireless - ie connection lost for no reason and only way to fix that was to restart computer. Now kernel panics. Does anyone have this problems? System is MacBook C2D 2GHz.

Well dont hope to much. I had the same issue as well. Since my computer is still under warrantee I went to apple. The first time they changed my motherboard as well as the keyboard (never got to know why) After I got the computer back it all started again and went back. This time they changed the ram and I was told to downgrade back to 10.4.9 so I dont think that they will look into this which makes me nervous. What if Leopord has the same problem as well. Does this mean we will never be able to upgrade ourselves. Im going back as the problem occured again before I downgraded back to 10.4.8 confirming what they had said to me. I can not take the risk of being not able tio upgrade myself with a computer thats barely 7 months old. Will keep you posted on the ongoing with apple in Singapore

  • IBook G4 Kernel Panic (Solution?)

today i tried to fix my iBook G4 (mid 2005). the problem i was having was i would get kernel panics very shortly after boot, i don't know why but i was. for a while it sat on my shelf and i may have fixed it.  i replaced the optical drive with one from my dead TiBook because it said "leopard can't be installed on this computer because the media may be damaged." now it seems to work.. is this a known problem with these iBooks?

The AirPort Extreme Card on that model is attached to the logic board semi-permanently.
It's not an easy thing to swap it out as it was on previous models.
If it's the 12-inch model, the instructions can be found at this link:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iBook-G4-12-Inch-1-33-GHz-AirPort- Bluetooth-Board/707/1
At the time I'm posting this, iFixit has two of the boards in stock.

  • Interrupted upgrade on an iBook = kernel panic

I was trying to upgrade an old G3 iBook (10.2) to Tiger, and borrowed a firewire DVD drive from a friend. I won't bore you with why, but I had to interrupt the upgrade and start over. No matter what I do now, I get a kernel panic starting up. I've tried Disk Utility, both from an earlier install CD (I don't know how to start up from the firewire DVD drive) and from a G5 connected via firewire, starting the iBook while holding down "T" on the keyboard. Nothing helps.
I can read and save most of the data via the firewire connection to the G5, but my iPod is linked to this computer, I'm editing two mailing lists from it, and a lot of my data is embedded in programs on it. Is there anything I can do to recover this disk, say by removing recently written and updated system files and rebooting?

No, I can see the iBook drive from the G5 via "target disk mode". I just can't get it to boot by itself. Are you saying I can connect the unbootable iBook to the G5 by target disk mode and also connect the DVD drive by firewire and upgrade the iBook that way, by connecting the upgrade DVD to the iBook through a G5 intermediary?

  • Erratic behaviour. Kernel Panic. RAM problem? HDD? iBook blues..

I dont know what's wrong with my iBook.
At first, safari kept on crashing. I deleted plists (Safari prefs files) and Safari ran again using new default plists... for awhile. Then it crashed and wouldnt start at all.
Then I got my first kernel panic (BSOD of OSX)
I reinstalled OSX TWICE trying to figure out if updates were causing the problem.
I also tried Apple Hardware test from my installation disc. Everyiting ok.
After that, I got a shock when my applications would not run! Safari would exit. YM crashed. MSNmsgr crashed. And then the kernel would panic (like BSOD).
I also removed RAM i recently installed.
    PC2700 256MB Kingston.
According to Apple, the iBook G4 1ghz uses PC2100 RAM but is compatible with PC2700 RAM.
I tried Apple Hardware test again from my installation disc. Everyting is fine.
But the system hanged on startup. No login screen at all.
I tried reinstall OSX. But the installer (booted from DVD) does not detect my HDD!!!
shocked, i thought that my disk had failed.
Diskutility of the installer. cannot repair the volume.
    HFS: volume okay
    Volume ... corrupt.
    So, I erased the HDD.
Rebooted and now installer recognizes the disc.
So i just reinstalled OSX for the FOURTH time.
    Now im really confused...
What could have caused the HDD to become corrupt?
Was it incompatible RAM? (but the RAM should be compatible)
or is it my HDD failing?
    I ran diskwarrior.
SMART HDD reports indicate that the disc is running normally.
I am really confused. Dont know what could be the cause of the problem.
I cannot risk my computer being unable to boot again as i use it for work. And when OSX cannot boot and I had to reinstall (note, Install and archive was not available as OS DVD was a lower version than the installed version) and all my files were gone. Luckily, i had a backup.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It is doubtful that you have been seeing is a kernel panic, since a kernel panic does not give you a blue screen.
The hard drive can be corrupted if you do a forced shutdown instead of a normal one. If you were stuck on a blue screen repeatedly, it is my assumption that you did repeated forced shutdowns. Any and every time you do one, you should repair the hard drive before continuing to work.
I don't understand why Archive and Install was not available to you. I have started over after updates with my 10.3.0 CD and used Archive and Install. There should be no problem in that regard.
The iBook G4 Discussions can be found here.
