Dropped Lacie 250 Gig -- Power plug broke off. Help!

It happens to the best of us. I accidently knocked my 250 gig Lacie Hardrive off my desk and it fell on the ground. The male power plug with 4 prongs broke off inside the female portion of the plug. In other words, the female part of the power plug in the Lacie drive where you insert the power plug is broken because the power plug prongs broke off the male power cord and are stuck inside.
I have no idea what to do. Can I fix this power plug? Can I pull out the metal prongs that are stuck inside the female part and buy a new power cord? Do I need to pull ou the hard drive and buy a new Lacie case? I appreciate your help in advance. I can't believe I did this and I am hoping for a good solution.

If I understand your situation correctly, you might be able to pull the broken pins out of the socket and buy a new power supply. I'm not sure which one you have, perhaps like this:
http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10735
Of course, something else may be broken inside from the fall, including the drive.
You can identify parallel ATA/IDE drives by a large ribbon connector on the end, plus the 4 pin power connector. Serial drives have the power connector and a small single wire serial connector. My guess, if you have the common LaCie silver drive, is that it's a parallel.

  • A/c power plug broke off inside machine--how to repair

my daughter's ibook g4 power supply plug broke off, it is inside the socket in the machine--what is the practical way to get this fixed, please?
    thanks--

Hi there and welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your question is not unique, as unfortunately some users have experienced
some mishaps with their DC line-in plug (and socket) and so if you can
get the broken piece out of the computer's DC-in socket, that would be a
good thing. Sometimes a visit to a full service Apple Store (official) where
a Genius bar exists, and you've called ahead for a specified time, a skilled
person there may be able to figure out how to remove the broken end.
Of course, a replacement power supply is generally needed, to restore
    the illuminated original plug with an identical part is almost impossible;
though I have read about people getting a generic plug and managing
to get the DC polarity correct (so as to not damage the computer.) But
the best fix would be to get a new replacement Apple power adapter.
Getting the broken "pin" section of the AC Adapter's DC plug out of
the computer is the larger concern; since the socket itself may be
damaged if this isn't done properly. Or it may have been damaged
by the action that caused the plug to be broken in the first place.
There are several posts in these Discussion forums, the iBook G4
    and G3 (white) and PowerBook G4 models use a similar power setup;
so finding replies already posted is not hard.
In fact, I replied to one such post and so searched back and found
the URL to a question and replies. Note mine is near the end of this:

And the quoted text in that post is from one of the links in the post.

The blue letters in the post are links to outside web sites; I am not
sure of the total validity of their content and they only serve to show
someone has tried some ideas and they may have had adequate
results from them; and that's about as far as I'd go. They're worth a look.
[Another set of posts (by user name) regarding this question
and out-of-warranty repair options, etc with the DC-in board
and power plug damage, among others, would be those by

get smaller tweezers.  you need some type of small instrument.

  • Tip power cord broke off inside outlet.

The very tip of the male end of my power adaptor broke off INSIDE the computer. It is now stuck in the computer's power outlet. How do I get it out without disassembling my powerbook?
I should add that the outlet is still working and my replacement adaptor charges it, it's just that it doesn't sit comfortably with the other thing still inside it and occasionally it makes a little crackling noise (no sparks, just the noise)
Also, this is the second time that this happened with an Apple power cord in the space of a year. I am not unduly abusing my power cords, so what am I doing to cause this? Are Apple's power adaptors shoddy or is it me?

Yes, that will always be a danger.. which is why you use a tiny tiny amount of glue, and let it dry. You'll be able to pull it out, even if it glues to the metal.. as a non-pourous surface, the bond with the super glue won't be very strong.
Personally, I'd very seriously consider stripping the machine down, following the instructions at http://www.ifixit.com

  • Part of my power adapter broke off in powerbook power point!

i unplugged the power adapter from the powerbook and the male end has broke off and stuck in the powesupply hole. so wedged in, is there any safe ways to fix it? never opened up my powerbook and had a looksy.... :[

I've done this once. Some have suggested putting a drop of superglue onto the tip of a small stick (like a toothpick) and carefully touching it to the broken tip.
I had success heating a small glob of solder to a small wire with my soldering iron, and touching it to the broken tip, then removing the iron quickly. I held the wire with tweezers. One has to be careful in any event to not touch the outer hole with glue or solder.
Naturally you remove the battery first. Access to the power jack isn't much better when the computer is opened.

  • Power plug broken off in computer

This is on behalf of my son, who is developmentally disabled. The plug-in mechanism/part of his iBook G4 (purchased in spring 2005) has apparently broken off in the computer. He bought AppleCare when he bought the computer but failed to send in the paperwork or register it or something, so it is no longer covered by warranty. Apparently he did get a notice in the mail at some point that the warranty was about to expire, but due to his moving out of state, the notice got to him too late.
He is living in another state, and I recently brought the computer back home with me after a visit to see if I could figure out how to fix it. He says he was given an estimate (maybe at CompUSA in Omaha, NE?) of $800 to take the computer apart and fix the problem.
I looked up a web site about disassembling this computer, and it looks like more than I am comfortable with doing.
Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get to this part of the computer in a less "invasive" manner? The battery is completely depleted, so I can't power up the computer or anything at this point.
Might there be a way to get a charger for the battery so it can be charged up outside the computer? That might be a stopgap measure.
    Thanks,
    Linda

Just to clarify... He bought the iBook at CompUSA in Madison, WI. He lives in Omaha, NE, and got the repair estimate there. I live about an hour's drive from Madison, in the boonies of SW Wisconsin. He didn't buy it from the Apple Store. Thanks for the online references. I'll check them out, and maybe next time I go to Madison (Friday) I'll take the iBook with me and ask CompUSA to look at it.
I did try the needle-nosed pliers route -- it didn't work. But I'm not sure what I'm looking at, really. I'll look at the computers on display, too. My goal is to try to get this fixed by New Year's when I will see him again.
    Thanks,
    Linda

  • Dropped part of my power adapter in water - Help

I dropped part of my adapter connector (the part that connects to my Macbook) in a bowl of water. I quickly pulled it out and tried to dry it off. Someone suggested that I put it in some uncooked rice, so I'm trying that now.
I'm not really sure what to do. Is the adapter a gonner? Is it safe to try to connect it to my computer?

Thanks, that's what I'm doing, so hopefully it will work. But, is it dangerous to plug it back in to my computer (assuming I leave it in the rice overnight)?

  • DDTS-100 power plug problem please help!

I wanted to order the DDTS-100 online but I can only choose the 3 pin uk plug. What i need is a 2 pin plug, i don't know exactly which one(I live in the Netherlands.) How can I solve this?

just get the 3 pin one and then either use a converter (can be bought in most electronics stores) or see if it's possible to replace the cable entirely.

  • Dropped my canon rebel t4i,broke off canon symbol under flash is there anyway to fix this???

dropped my canon rebel t4i camera, broke off canon symbol just under flash hard plastic piece. Is there anyway to fix this???

Depending on the extent of the damage (and if you're sure that's all it is) then Canon service likely can pop on a new part.
BUT... parts don't necessarily break down to the component level you and I might imagine.  I've heard of people needing a new "dial" on the camera and what they have to get is a whole new top-assembly (not just the one little bit that they need.)
The only way to know is for you to contact Canon service.  I'm not sure if you can get a price quote over the phone.  You may have to send it in.  The only way to know is to call.

  • My X1 Carbon's power port broke - is it safe to use it, and can it be fixed?

The small piece of plastic which seems to protect some pins in the centre of my X1 Carbon's power port broke off, and I'm worried about, well, what I should worry about. For illustration, the piece I'm talking about is the one in the middle of the port here: http://i.imgur.com/FMrpSIo.jpg
I can push it back into the port temporarily as I've done for the photo, but when I plug in my power cable then unplug it, it comes off in the tip of the power cable, and I'm worried about losing it as I almost did today.
It looks like this http://i.imgur.com/3anYfZA.jpg when the plastic plug is removed, and this http://i.imgur.com/CVwBbm7.jpg is what the bottom of the plug (broken end) looks like. From these, I'm guessing that it's there either to protect the pins from breaking, prevent them from touching each other, or both. So my questions are twofold:
    1. What's the danger here? Is it just the pins breaking/bending (I'm not too concerned about this; I always keep my laptop in a sleeve/case), or could something be shorted out/my computer blow up if things go wrong and the pins touch? Is it safe to continue using my computer?
    2. Is there any way to fix this? I can only think of trying to glue it back in, but there are so many little pins around there I'm worried I'd mess something up doing so, not to mention that the piece itself is tiny. My laptop is out of warranty, and while I'd be okay with paying to have the power port replaced, looking at the hardware maintenance manual it seems like the entire system board would have to be replaced? I don't know how much this would cost, but I assume it'd be more than it's worth...

To get to it, it looks like you just have to remove the keyboard and bezel assembly.

  • OK HERE IS WHERE I AM AT HARD DRIVE WENT DOWN UPGRADED TO A 250 GIG AND NOW NEED TO KNOW HOW TO INSTALL OSX ON THE POWERBOOK G4 17

I have a powerbook g4 17 and it recently went down the hard drive sounded like it was eating itself so i replaced the hard drive with a 250 gig and now i need help on how to get osx onto the powerbook it will not boot from disk i will start all the back at 0s9 if need be can anyone please help me i miss my g4

Do you have any OSX disks?
It won't boot from the new hard drive yet because there is no OS installed.
You need to use an OSX disk, put in your mac, then when turn on, hold down the C key (to boot from the CD).
Hold it down for a long time until you hear it noisily reading from the CD drive.  Once OSX starts up (from CD) you should go to Disk utility and you will need to format your new hard drive.
Once formatted, you can then install OSX.
Everything is done from the OSX install disk.
If you don't have one, you can buy a retail copy from Apple (not Snow Leopard), or from Ebay.  Make sure it is a retail copy, not disks that came with a Mac as they only work with the exact model of Mac it came with.

No power after turning off and plugging into a new functioning outlet

Perhaps corruption of the Energy Saver settings...
    Reset the PRAM cannot hurt.
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Problems with Lacie 250 hd: Is it the drive or my computer

I have a Lacie 250 gb hd. I was transferring a file to it and my daughter unplugged the drive from the wall. Now I cannot get the drive to mount. I have tried to reformat the drive in Disk Utility. It will not repartition the drive. Is the drive damaged beyond repair, or is there a way to save it?
Also, this is the second hd I have had go bad. Is there a more reliable brand than Lacie?

    Dear BRicks
First of all a los of power to a drive can totally crash the drive making it unmountable so it is very unlikely that your problem lies with the computer itself. Secondly it is possible to retreve data from a dead drive by freezing it then tapping it with a rubber mallet or dropping it on its side this might get you about an hour of read and write time. Third regarding the stability of hard drives i have found samsung and maxtor to both be inexpencive (radioshake has maxtor 200gig external drives for like 100 dollars at the moment) and reliable i have an internal 15 gig maxtor that i have had around for about 10 years or so that i pulled from a server back in the day (yes back when servers had 15 gigs worth of space lets you know how long i have been working on computers anyway) Also youhave an option of getting a drive enclosure and buying a hi end drive to throw into it. i hope all this ranting provides you with a solution or some help in some way.
