Dropped Laptop - Startup Problem Now

Laptop took a two foot fall on the side. This has happened before over the course of four years, but this time its problematic.
At startup, chimes and black screen
There's power as the cap locks is green.
Tried reseating the memory
Tried zapping the PRAM (control + option + P + R) before and during the chimes
Tried resetting the PMU (power + control option shift) for five seconds
BUT
I can get it to boot up in firewire target mode and see the drive from another computer. Screen works and displays the firewire bouncing logo. I'm able to copy off any files that I need.
Anyone have any ideas on how to proceed??

Take it to an authorized service center for assessment.

Hello, I have a Compaq Presario CQ61-319WM and for some days now my computer won't start up. The usual "Q" logo on startup is gone and I don't even need to press the power button, it starts all by itself when I plug in the battery or power cable. When I do so, I can hear a fan and hard drive working, and the caps lock, power and wi fi(red) buttons are on. After a few moments though, everything stops and online the wifi button remains lit, with both red and blue leds on, creating a purpleish color. I tried hard reset but didn't work, can you help?

Here are a couple of options you could try.
1. One possible way to try and retrieve your files from a non-booting drive is to follow the process detailed in the link below. The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive ) and I've often found it to be successful in retrieving data even from a failing Hard Drive. When you've created the CD, follow the instructions and see if you can back up your existing files.

2. Another option would be to remove the HDD, place it in an external caddy - an example is on the link below - connect this to another PC and see if you can access your files.

An iTunes account is nothing more than a login and password.
The media is only where the user put it. Restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the backup of the computer.

MacBook pro when windows 7 has startup problem and Mac os doesn't work

I installed windows 7 on my MacBook pro and it did work well. But now windows has a startup problem and "startup repair" couldn't solve it, so I can't use both Mac os and windows and my laptop has become completely useless. Any suggestion?

Reboot and hold down command-R at the sound of the chime, that should take you to the Lion recovery partition, if it does go to disk utility and see if you have an OSX partition at all.

MSI GE6020E002 startup problem

I posted before regarding a startup problem where the laptop would not startup, the laptop would power up but the power button would blink orange and blue and the screen would stay blank, the laptop qould work after 2 minutes if the ethernet cable was unplugged. Now the laptop has the same issue except it does not turn on at all. The laptop battery does charge so its not a power issue. What can i do to fix this?

do this disconnect your battery and AC adapter and if you live within EU then you can break warranty sticker and then open back cover and find CMOS battery if you find it disconnect it then hold down power button for 30 seconds to 1 min and then re-connect the cmos battery and put back cover back on and put battery back and AC adapter and then try booting the laptop this shall power bios chip down fully and make it boot up from start again but it does not reset anything in bios i dont think.
Since some times it only requires bios chip to hang out completely to cause laptop from being unable to boot.

Sorry, possibly you need a new hard drive or try reformating. First
you can try something like http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/ it has been known to repair disk that DiskUtility could not. YMMV and they don't give it away.
If Disk Warrior can not repair then you need to Reformate the drive. Make sure you have a back-up in place no matter what.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. 4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

My Desktop pc & mobile not play any video and in my laptop no problem

i'm using 30 version of firefox in my Laptop, Desktop & Mobile also but in my Desktop pc & mobile i'm unable to play any video and in my laptop no problem.
So if the prob. in my network so it will be not possible.
i think like earlier some time ago flashgot will stop working in firefox now this same mistake is accures again for video.
N yes i've updated my flash player, shockwave, java etc...

enabled until you enable it.

I upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.0 using a drop in DVD and now I can't log in...

I upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.0 using a drop in DVD and now I can't log in...
This was on a G5 imac. I tried booting to the DVD and resetting the password but this did not help.
I did see the 2 user accounts still there when I reset the password so that gives me hope that my data is all there intact.
I need help getting past this login screen PLEASE!
The login name is blank and I've tried everything to get past it.
I heard from a tech that there was a problem when upgrading from 10.4.11 to 10.5.0 instead of the 10.5.3 or whatever, and it was a known issue when using the 10.5.0 disc to upgrade and he said that there was information on apple's site on what to do when this happens but I have not come accross this info as of yet.
I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me.

OK I finally got passed the above problem by just trying to type it in over and over and over and it finally took!
It seems as though I may have typed it wrong or misspelled something but I could swear I put it in the same way everytime!
NOW...
when I type : passwd username
replacing username with the short name it says
paddwd: Unknown user name 'username'
someone told me that possibly the home folder is still there and intact but the login may have gotten trashed and that i may need to recreate the user login. Does that sound like a possibility?

Can anyone diagnose my startup problem from this screen pattern?

After failing to startup my Mac on about 8 consecutive attempts today, I finally got it to boot up, and now I'm afraid to turn it off for fear that I won't be able to re-boot.

This screen came up immediately, along with the spinning cog and the apple logo, both rather faint. But then those two disappeared, and all that was left was the gray screen with the pattern as shown in the photo. And that's as far as I got each time.
The display itself seems to be fine, because even when I couldn't use it with the Mac Pro, I was able to hook it up to my MacBook Pro and it worked fine.
Can anybody tell me what's happening?

To be honest, though, I was hoping that the pattern in the photo was so specific and common that someone would look at it and say, "Oh, of course! I've seen THAT one before. Do this and your problem is solved."
I have seen graphics cards produce that type of screen as a result of a few of situations.
One, if the card is miss seated.
One other is if a capacitor on the card has failed, while VRAM failure is another cause.
The first case is easy to fix; remove and reseat.
The second and third require replacement of the failed graphics card.
Cleaning the gold contacts with 99% isopropyl alcohol and thoroughly dusting the card while it is out is a good idea.
I have been able to replace a bad capacitor to restore a card, but luck was a big part of determining which one it was....

Startup problem with Lion OS 10.7.3

Just recently, I've been experiencing a startup problem with Lion. I don't usually have any issues running my Mac, so I'm at a loss why this is happening now.
I have an Intel Mac Pro running 10.7.3. I usually leaving my Mac running all the time and only restart when the need arises. In addition to being my main computer, this mac alsocontrols a MacMini that serves as a music server thru screen sharing.
This past weekend, I restarted my Mac and could not get past the grey screen. The mac chimes, the apple logo appears with the spinning gear, the blue screen briefly appears, but instead of progressing to the desktop it reverts to the grey screen with a repeating cycle of the spinning gear appearing (spins for a while, stops, disappears, reppears spinning, stops, disappears, over and over) - never progressing beyond that stage.
I decided to reinstall the system and things have been fine for the past few days. Today, restarting again resulting in the same problem.
I've tried several things without success. I disconnected all peripherals, reset the PRAM/SMC, ran Disk Utility from a install volume and ran repair and permissions (no problems reported). Tried safe mode startup - a progress bar appeared but never fully progressed and could not get to the desktop.
Recent changes included updating the OS to 10.7.3 and Adobe Photoshop CS5.5 - no recent hardware changes. No bluetooth devices connected.

I've reinstalled the OS today and am back up and running.
But, since this is twice this has happened within the past week, I'm worried about might be causing this issue - besides bad luck. My Mac is usually rock solid - can't remember the last time I've had to reinstall the OS in the past few generations of OS X.
