Dropped MacBook Pro From 10 Feet

...it's completely smashed. Everything's broken.
I purchased it 8 mths ago on an American Express.
...am I completely out of luck? Any suggestions? Am I 3k out?

call amex as long as you have at least a gold card they should cover the damage, but be careful with your words on the phone just give them the info they ask for! But they should cover it from what i understand in the protection program they have and especially since it is with in a year. And how did it drop from 10 feet? just curious

Dropped my macbook pro from 1.2 feet and after 2 restarts it worked. It works fine but the screen moved a little so one side is slightly higher than the other. Should I worry about the screen and do I need to check anything else to make sure that its okay?

Well of course you could or just go with it.  Hard to make that call with little information or physically seeing it.
Accidental damage is not covered by warranty.
    You can make a genuis reservation to get it inspected for free and a hardware test if you are near a Apple store;
You can run a AHT test as well-

  • Upgraded to macbook pro from time machine and want new apps

    Hey Gang,
I updated my old Macbook to a new 2011 Macbook Pro from a time machine backup.  I have the app disc that came along with the computer and i'm wondering what's the easiest way to update all of my applications?  Do i have to go through and delete my old versions and then install the new ones from the disc one by one?
    Thanks.

Since I don't know what you did, I can only assume that you have migrated things from your old computer that replaced new applications or system files that came pre-installed on the new one. Result: you have lost any new functionality as a result.
So, my suggestion is one you probably won't like. Erase the hard drive on the new computer then reinstall OS X and bundled software using the restore discs that came with your new computer.
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation. When the installation is completed and you restart the computer you can check that everything is working properly. Then open the Optional Installs folder on the installation DVD and start the installer for installing pre-bundled software.
Once that has been completed you can then use Migration Assistant to tranfer your old Home folder and third-party applications. However, if you are not certain all your third-party applications are compatible, then I suggest you first update them on the old computer prior to migrating.

I cannot seem to print after updating my MacBook Pro from OSX Tiger 10.4 to OSX Snow Leapord 10.6.  Can anyone help me?

Try re-adding your printer in System Preferences/Print & Fax. Not sure what type of printer you have, but if it was old and relying on an Appletalk connection, Snow Leopard dropped that support.

  • AHH! Help!!! Dropped MacBook Pro! Monitor problem.

I just dropped my MacBook Pro from a coffee table on to tile.. About a 20 inch drop.. I feared the worst, and I was in so much shock I didn't even pick it up right away.. The monitor was shut when it fell.. I picked it up off the floor and looked for damage.. Aside from a small scrape on the top outside left hand side of the monitor nothing else was visibly wrong.. I opened the monitor, entered my password, everything seemed normal... It wasn't till I tried shutting the monitor I noticed that it wouldn't shut!! I think the entire monitor shift a centimeter or two.. The little hooks on each side of the camera don't line up with the holes under the mouse pad.. Can someone with knowledge of repairs let me know what kind of repairs I most likely need, where to go, and how much this will set me back? This really scks.

Man, my stomach sank when I saw this post. Oh the bad memories!
The same thing happened to my 17" PowerBook a couple of years ago. I knocked it off the shelf onto the carpeted (thank you) floor. It bent the hinges and still will not close all the way. It works flawlessly however, enough that my wife wanted it when I bought my 17" MBP. She has it on her desk and keeps the lid up all the time.
As others have stated, it'll cost a pretty penny to repair. You'll just need to decide if it's worth it. Good luck!

  • 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011.takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get

    Hello All,
I have a 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011. The past few weeks, it has been getting increasingly difficult to get on my computer. It takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get to the dark gray log-in screen. Even when I finally get logged in to start working, thinking it would be okay now, it shuts down randomly.
I've ruled out the possibility of a software problem because I've just done a clean re-install of Mac OS X Mavericks on my computer just yesterday.
I did upgrade the RAM recently, about a month and a half ago, from 4GB to 16GB, I went to the apple store four days after that upgrade to have them do a hardware test, and clean the inside of my laptop, which helped with previous heat issues. When they did the hardware test, the hardware was all registered as fine from their system.
I've tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, and doing the internet recovery hardware test, but to no avail. I thought I could at least find out what parts needed to be replaced from the hardware test but it seems that when the hardware test is almost finished, the computer just shuts down, So I am unable to see the results.
My computer is also having battery issues, under battery condition, it says "replace now," parts have been ordered, waiting for arrival. But if the battery health is low, it should still boot up fine, it would just hold a significantly less charge.
Could this be a hard drive issue?
Has anyone had similar symptoms and how was it resolved?
Does anyone know what I can do to alleviate this issue?
I haven't had time to take it to Apple because I'm currently taking a 21 credit semester academically. I'm an art and design student so my computer is basically the bane of my existence. Help! Any constructive advice is welcomed!
Thank you so much for your input!
    -Christina C.

The only observations are that the backup drive is deemed too small and the quite long list of diagnostic reports dated between  Jan 18, 2015 (which I believe is the day I upgraded to Yosemite) & today the latest Yosemite update was installed on Jan 28, 2015
Any further assistance will be appreciated

You would need the original installation disks or files for the Adobe software to get it onto your iMac, and having it on two computers may not be allowed by your university's licensing. Talk to whoever issued the MacBook.
As to the music, just copy it over to the MacBook, either via Home Sharing, file sharing, or an external storage medium (hard drive, USB flash drive, etc.).
    Regards.

Logging into itunes store on each machine wth different Apple IDs is OK Autorising each others machines with the other Apple ID is OK. This is completley separate from Home Sharing
For Home Sharing to work you need to
File > Home Sharing > Create Home Share.
You need to select one of the two Apple IDs you are using and ENTER THIS ON BOTH MACHINES WHEN CREATING THE HOME SHARE.
    Home sharing will then work

  • How do I stop my MacBook Pro from hibernating?

I purchase my first MacBook Pro (late 2011 model) a few months ago. I Installed OS X Mountain Lion and everything was working fine. I could close the lid, and open it again, perhaps half a day later, and it would wake from sleep and allow me to enter my password.
Now, in the past month (perhaps due to software updates), the behaviour has changed. Now, it goes in to hibernation when the lid is shut for more than a few hours. Upon waking from hibernation it takes a good 30 seconds or more before the clock updates and I can enter my password.
I have been in to System Preferences -> Energy Saver, and changed the settings to never enter display sleep or computer sleep, and I have disabled putting hard disks to sleep when possible. I have also used the pmset utility to set the timeout for hibernation to start to 2 days. I have tried reseting the PRAM and the SMC.
    None of this has worked.
Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone know a way I can stop my MacBook Pro from hibernating so often?
Just to clarify: Everything mentioned above has been when it is plugged in to the wall charger.

It just loads them it doesn't download them. So quit iPhoto.

  • I cannot find videos (not movies) that i have transferred to my macbook pro from an external hard drive, these files used to be on my windows PC!

I cannot find videos (not movies) that i have transferred to my macbook pro from an external hard drive, these files used to be on my windows PC. Photos and a few of the videos came over but i am missing the majority of the videos. Help please!!! I have tried omnidisksweeper with no success in finding them.
in my Usage it says i have over 40 gb of movies when i only have about 9gb which i can see using spotlight search. i really hope the other amount is my missing videos! these are videos of my kids as babies.

Read this post and do the migration again, putting the library in a portable shape first if necessary.

  • How do I stop my MacBook Pro from making shortcuts on my desktop when I'm moving a folder

    So my question is,
How do I stop my MacBook Pro from making shortcuts on the desktop when I'm trying to move the original photo, all I want to do is move a picture from a folder on the desktop without making a shortcut!

    Hi RockHazard,
If you want to change the behavior of the Finder when moving files around you can use keyboard shortcuts.
OS X: Keyboard shortcuts - Apple Support
Way down under Finder shortcuts we find:
    Command key while dragging
Move the dragged item to another volume or location
(the pointer changes while key is held)
    Option key while dragging
    Copy the dragged item
(the pointer changes while key is held)
    Command-Option key combination while dragging
Make an alias of the dragged item
(the pointer changes while key is held)
    Best regards,
    Nubz

  • How can I get Configurator off my work PowerMac and have my ipad, ipod4 controlled by my macbook pro from home?

Hi, I put apple configurator on my work machine which has all my itunes, my entire Apple Macintosh History on it and used apple configurator thinking it would be a great way to sync all my devices. I get it now, that it doesn't do that for the private person but is really for an institution or employer. Be that as it may I threw away the app from my main computer and thought I would be done with it.
I just reinstalled apple configurator and thought I took all devices off it. My ipad disappeared from the itunes menu. I plugged my ipad back into my machine and Paulz Config reappeared. I need to get this off my work PowerMac and have my ipad, ipod4 controlled by my macbook pro from home. And does it matter if I use the same email address that's listed with my power mac at work to easily switch the dominant mac over to my home from work. Things can get dicey at work and I don't want my life tied to the work power mac anymore. Thanks, Paul I realize there are a ton of questions in this. I am gratefull if I can just get the apple config off everything.

To completely remove Apple Configurator from a Mac, you need to delete the application along with the following:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.configurator.
You may also want to delete the contents of ~/Library/Keychains and /var/db/lockdown to remove the Supervision Certificate, public and private keys and device pairing information. NOTE: There are other things in Keychains that you may or may not want to delete. Google "keychains" to learn more about what's in that folder.
    Good luck!
    ~Joe
