Dropped my Macbook Pro about 5 ft.. Is this a $1000 mistake?

Well.. It fell about 5 ft to the floor... Doesnt really look damaged.. but when I try to power it on the screen stays blank.. and I just hear the hard drive click a bit.. pause and repeat to click a bit..
Its a 1st gen 2.0gig... Way outta warranty.. Is this a $1k mistake??
Does apple have any kind of flat rate repair? Or offer discounted upgrades? Maybe for $1k at least I'd get a better machine? Right now I want to slit my wrist...

Do you have your original discs? If so, you might want to see if you can run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test and see what it says. If you get error codes, that will indicate what has been damaged.
Was the Mac on when this happened? If so, the drop could have done in the hard drive, which you could possibly replace yourself:

As suggested earlier, Apple or an AASP could do a comprehensive analysis of what is wrong and what it might take to fix it. Once you know what is wrong, you can make a decision as to whether your Mac is worth fixing. You can get a quote for any repair, and if it seems like too much, then consider doing the work yourself.

So I just dropped my Macbook Pro about three feet off of my bed. I had it charging and accidently pulled it and it fell. I had a case on it and I removed the case and it had no dents or any visible damage. I completed a diagnostic test and everything came up clear. Can anythiing be wrong with it?

Can something be wrong? Of course.
However, if nothing came up in diagnostics and you can do everything that you normally do without problems, you should be okay. If problems start coming up later, this may be the cause of it (especially problems with a hard disk, as you may have caused damage to it when it fell).

It never worked again. Repairs would have been well over $1,000, and would not have been covered by the warranty or by AppleCare (if I had bought it). I opted to just buy a new Mac instead.
Now, just because that happened to me does not mean that's what will happen to you. However, you do need to prepare yourself for that possibility.

My Macbook Pro fell off my bed (approx. 3ft) and dented the left side of the front left corner on the battery meter. Besides the damage everything seemed okay for a little while until I kept getting a erratic curser track pad. I kept cleaning it thinking some dirty or oil may of got on it or in the edges, but long story short I found out my battery is swollen and thats the reason for the erratic curser. The drop and dent impacted the battery causing it to swell. I feel that I just need a new battery. I purchased my macbook from the apple store and still have applecare. However I've researched online a bit and saw some people posted that if you drop your macbook, Apple will void my coverage. I also read that when people have had a swollen battery and applecare, they just brought it into the Genius bar and they went to the back and brought them a new battery. I've been super nervous to go see them as I've spent the extra bucks on Applecare and did not get any use of it. If anyone has had this issue or knows about it, please let me know!!

I dropped my macbook pro on the floor and I wanted to see how much it would cost to get a bent corner on the lid to get fixed.

I recently dropped my macbook pro from the couch and it fell on the floor that was about a foot down. Nothing really major happened except for that the same area where the screen is, on the exterior of that there is a slightly bent corner. I really wanted my macbook pro to look in good condition and I wanted to know if there is any way I can repair this or do I have to replace the whole lid. I'm in the same position, the store said they didn't know of any new release, so i bought my macbook pro to find out about mountain lion. I really hope that i'm not going to pay for the upgrade. New to apple, also last month bought my Ipad 3, really thought that Airplay would have been on my book pro, nope, waste of time.........need that update to use it. take it to an apple store. make an appointment with the genius bar first. but if its that new they shoudl just take care if it for you. they should have the date of purchase on their computers so there should be no problem

I dropped my macbook pro 13inch-unibody and I have a dent in the corner of my screen. it doesn't affect the actualy visual part of the screen but I would like to undent it. Also, I have some scratches on the bottom of the notebook and would like to get rid of it as well. Is there any way to do that?

If you want to get rid of the scratches and dents you need to take it to an Apple Store or AASP and have the damaged parts replaced. It won't be inexpensive but it shouldn't cost anything for a price quote. My suggestion is to begin taking better care of it and also to get some protective covers.

I suggest you immediately make a backup of your data. You don't know if or when the computer will show some symptoms from the drop. You may want to, for piece of mind, take the computer to an authorised service center for assessment. No one here can assess any internal damage you may have done.

My household contents insurance has 2 options for accidental damage: AUD2000, AUD5000. The other issue is whether the computer value is such that the computer (serial no., etc) has to be specifically stated in the policy paperwork. This clause applies to accidental damage occurring anywhere in Australia & New Zealand in my case. For off-the-shelf laptops the $5000 would cover most. There is an excess on the policy but that is small compared with repair/replacement costs. My insurance company paid out for my previous MacBook with the cost of a new MacBook and its better specs less $100 (excess) when the MacBook got fatal indigestion from a mug of coffee!

Dropped my MacBook Pro and it makes a weird sound!! HELP!

Hi guys! So last night I dropped my MacBook Pro that I bought last year from my 3 foot bed. So, my fan makes a weird clicking noise but now it also makes this weird noise that sounds as if the fan is scrapping the bottom of the laptop...what to do? Should I go to my nearest Apple store to see what I can do?

Leave it turned off. Something was injured.
Take it to Genius Bar for a free estimate. The estimate though may create a need for a new unit.
No offense intended, because yo do not mention your age ... your parents' home insurance or your home insurance (covered all of my bases there) may pay for the damage, but Apple's warranty does not.
