Dropping Frames before Each Cut in Playback

Hey all. I'm working with new HD footage shot on a Canon EOS 7D camera. The footage looks awesome, but I'm having trouble with playback. The clips themselves play fine with no dropped frames, but I'm getting the dropped frames error message at EVERY cut on the timeline. I'm working off of a media dedicated external harddrive with firewire 800. It's nowhere near capacity. And my machine is 2.4GHz & 4GB ram. I expect there might be some dropped frames here and there considering the size of the footage, but this seems to be a bigger problem.
I've tried all of the suggestions that I've come across. Does anyone have any ideas?

#28 Having to render every clip in the timeline
Shane's Stock Answer #28: When I put a clip in the timline, I have to render it before it will play. Why?
Your clip settings MUST match your timeline settings. If you have DV/NTSC material, you need a DV/NTSC timeline. The frame rate, audio rate and dimensions (4:3, 16:9) all need to match exactly. In Final Cut Pro 6, this is easy, because when you drop a clip into the timeline, it asks if you want to set up the timeline to match the settings of the first clip you drag into it. Click YES and you are ready to go.
However, in FCP 5.1 and earlier, it is a bit trickier.
The most important thing you need to do is properly set up your project from the start, and the best way to do this is to choose a setting from the Easy Setups, located under the Final Cut Pro menu.
Once you do this, you’ll need to create a new sequence. This is because the sequence that is already in your new project is setup for the typical default setting of DV/NTSC, or for the settings of your last project, which might not match what you are currently working with. So delete SEQUENCE 1 and create a new sequence:
This new sequence will contain the settings you chose in the Easy Setup menu, and should match the format you captured.

If you have FCPX (10) you can upgrade for free at the MacApp Store.
Did you click "proxy media" when importing? That will help playback.

  • Dropped frames in Final Cut Pro X 10.0.8

Whilst working on projects in final cut pro playback is jumpy and I get the 'Frames were dropped' warning. This makes it extremely hard to edit and is massively frustrating... Anything I can do? I have upgraded to 16gb of ram on my Early 2011 13 inch macbook pro but it hasn't seemed to have done anything...

Hi, I just upgraded to fcpx on our 2011 mac pro and I was having problems with audi not starting right away for playback in the timeline or clip library (.5 second or so delay) so I turned on the dropped frame check and sure enough I am getting them. I don't know if this is the reason for my audio playback lag, but was surprising to learn. I have premiere pro 6 on this mac and had fcp7 on it before and never saw this problem.
The media I am importing is avchd 720P60 and the optimized media box is checked so I'm editing proress 4:2:2 60P footage.
The Mac Pro has the internal apple raid card with fast drives (raid 0 mode) and plenty of ram (12gb). I do have the ATI Radeon HD 5870 card.
Do I really  need to use proxy media instead with this setup?

  • HD play back returns dropped frames on a 10 second playback w/transition

when playing back a clip in the timeline and I have a transition I get a pop up about dropped frames. I am playing back in HD and I have striped my drives for speed, but still the same thing. I have searched the logs and find no matches. I hope you can view the screen capture. I do know that HD plays a factor but tried the options, any ideas

The original footage is 1080i, cannon xh a1, but having it down convert to 720p-60. The 300x2 raid is 500+ free space, I just started the video.
After sleeping on it, I had a thought, I have a BlackMagic intensity pro capture card. I have it playing back on a 27" screen to see the true quality of HD, Its nice, so I thought that maybe on play back its outputting to the canvas and to through the BM card to the TV. I turned off the the video playback in the video properties and I am now able to play a sequence of clips with transitions without any problem.
Thanks for your response, it helped make me think, now off to tackle the BM card

  • Stutter frames before the cut

Anyone experience a quick "stutter" in the frames after the cut? Also happens after a text title has been added. What's up with this. Using FCP 7.0.3 on a Mac with 10.7.5 OS.

Hi. This is the Final Cut Pro X forum. Questions on FCP 7 will get a better response in the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • How do i resolve dropped frames in final cut pro hd academic 4.5?

i've tried all the suggestions in the "warning box"...i also remember seeing somewhere that the viewer and canvas windows shouldn't overlap or something?  should i throw salt over shoulder or wear a certain color or something?

Here are some things that may affect RT playback:
    1. Make sure you have enough free space on all hard drives; 10 to 20% free space is a good amount.
    2. Do not keep media and render files on your boot drive.  They should be stored on a 7200rpm hard drive that is either internal, or connected via Firewire or eSATA.  USB drives are not recommended.
    3. Keep the Canvas window at "Fit to Window" or smaller, but never larger than 100%.
    4. Turn of Canvas overlays such as Wireframe, Title Safe or level warnings.
    5. Only use media that works natively in FCP.  Do no use video formats like H.2.64.
    6. Render the Timeline fully; make sure all render types are checked in the Sequence->Render menus.

  • Final cut dropped frames and image resolution

I am working on a project involving placing a logo image over the video (simple). I have done this before with great results. I am trying the same with another project and I get warned that one or more dropped frames may have occured in playback. If I export to movie to .mov from FCP the movie has an issue in this area. If I disregard and export using compressor the movie plays fine but the logo image gets messed up....What am I doing wrong? How do I get fcp to stop dropping frames? what is the best file format to import a image into fcp (I have used a .png as I need the clear background)? I doesn't seem like I used to get this warning of dropped frames before. I have repaired permissions. I am stuck now.

    Also,
Would this have anything to do with importing movie as a .mov vs. the original .dv format?

  • Drop frame error message during playback

HELP! There is absolutely NO reason this should be happening. My time line will playback for about a minute or two and I get this error message about dropped frames (lower your real-time playback, close open sequences, etc. blah, blah).
I'm editing a HD 720P60fps project, with no files to render. My output settings are correct for my HD flat screen and my reference monitor. I'm using a Matrox MXo2 box for my A/V input/output, with the latest version of software, etc. SDI out to my reference and HDMI to my Panasonic Plasma.
I'm totally stumped at this point. any help will do. Usually easy set-up works every time, but it hasn't so far...thanks.
I have an Intel G5 Mac. Version 10.5.6 of Leopard. 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor. 10 GB of 800 Mhz ram.

You gave us a lot of information, but not where the media is stored. What sort of hard drives are you storing this media on? That is a HUGE factor in dropped frames issues.
    EDIT: OOP...this didn't go thru fast enough...hee..

  • Dropped frames frustration

    Hi:
I've read hours of posts trying to find something that resembles my problem. Of late, when my G4 is warming up I got 10 dropped frames in a 32 second clip. I notice that the longer I leave the computer on the better it gets. It took 38 minutes of playback for me to get a dropped frame.
I tried coping the clip to a new sequence and that seemes to work.
I have also noticed that when I edit a clip and send it to the timeline, it needs to be rendered. The frequency of these coppupt clips seems to me to often.
I've ascertained that it's not the camera or the Mini DV tape that 's at fault.
    Specs are: G4, 867Mhz., OSX 10.4.6, 2mb. L3 cache, 1.5 G Sdram.
The external drive is a recent LaCie 250 G @7200 rpm Fire wire 400.
Are these two problems related? The dropped frame problem was stressing me considerably, and it still needs to be solved. I know that with your help we can do it!
    Thanks,
    Fred
G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Final Cut Pro 4 HD

This sounds like several different problems.
As far as the "drops frames before warming up" one goes, that suggests two different things to look at. Most hardware components, of course, are digital and have negligible warm-up characteristics. The disk drive itself has some analog functions in the motor and controller which might be a suspect.
You mention the drive (250gb) but don't say how full it is. It's possible that a nearly full disk is more likely to have files in sub-optimal locations on the physical disk, resulting in playback problems. The only reason this would get better, however, would be if temporary files, renders, etc. got written in a less fragmented way.
The need to render almost always results from a discrepancy in the way the clip was captured versus the timeline. For example, if you are going back and forth with 24P material or timelines and inadvertently opened a new sequence as 24P but you're working with 29.97, etc.

  • Clips freezing before a cut

    Hi,
When I playback my clips in my timeline, before each cut to the next clip, it freezes for a couple of frames. I've tried adding a dissolve, and the clip doesn't freeze as it's dissolving, but obviously for some transitions I just want a simple cut.
    Hope you can help, thanks

I am actually having the same problem. For what it's worth, it only does this when you play the project in iMovie. Once you export the project, it sews the clips together seamlessly and there is no "freeze" at the end of each separate clip during playback.
I'm not sure why it does this before rendering. My clips are tiny (file size and duration) and they reside locally on my Mac (with a 7200rpm hdd), so it's not likely this delay is caused by seek time to pull the data for the next clip.
We would appreciate some help if anybody has found a solution.

  • Dropped frames - iMovie vs FCE only from Canon, not Sony

I have tapes shot on my new Canon Elura 100, SD, that import without complaint into iMovie but show lots of dropped frames in Final Cut Express. Imports from by onld Sony TRV never have a problem. Any idea what is going on?
Note - I used a Sony TRV-30 for years without a problem. I just picked up a Canon Elura 100. Now I get dropped frames all over the place on FCE import for tapes shot with the Canon. Out of interest I tried importing the tape shot on the Canon using my old Sony and I get the same problem. Tapes shot on the Sony have no problem. So evidently there is something on the Canon recorded tapes FCE does not like. The playback appears fine. iMovie import goes without a hitch. FCE I get a dropped frames notice and there are pauses in the playback of the imported video.

I rechecked and saw I was also starting to get dropped frames with the Sony, something I had not seen in years. Evidently there is something in my system now (perhaps 10.4.9?) that FCE2 does not like. I rebooted to an older installatioin of 10.3.9 and now both cameras are coming in without dropped frames.
Note: there were other Firewire devices connected, but not powered up.
I did not try changing the setup. Once I was in 10.3.9 everything came in.

  • Why is the position of key frame BEFORE scene changes not after?

Why is the position of I frame BEFORE scene changes not after?
And, why doesn't MovieVideoChart show any I frames other than those that correspond to periodic "key frames every X frames"? Is it reading meta data and not really showing where the real existing I frames are located? I.e. WYSIAL (what you see is a lie)? If so, where can I get an affordable tool that will let me examine my files in this regard?
I have put compression and chapter marks at scene changes in FCP and have exported with markers for DVDSP (both chapter and compression).
I have read on this forum (somewhere) that when insert key frames every X frames is selected, Compressor is still going to insert key frames automatically at key frames.
When I last encoded with H.264 in Compressor, I selected option to insert I key frame every 90 frames (fps=29.97).
When I jump to chapter in my encoded video, where I had place a key frame at a cut, I end up with a chapter at the frame BEFORE the cut.
I will try moving my chapter/compression marks a frame ahead and see if that helps.
Certainly, others must have been plagued by this problem.
When encoding with MPEG2 for DVD, the same thing happens.
It is a real problem. I get one frame appearing before the cut in chapter skips.
Hope someone can illuminate this problem.

    Hi there
As you have seen, RoboHelp doesn't understand how to create the layers you are wanting to achieve the effect in Word. It simply brings the images in as separate objects.
Basically there are two approaches you might consider.
You could insert Positioned Text Boxes and configure them to present the images as you want. If you take this approach, you will likely find yourself struggling to maintain the positioning consistently as well as noticing text flow issues. Personally, I'd avoid that approach.
The other approach involves displaying the images in your Word document so that you see them as intended, then screen capture so you grab the combined image. Then save that combined image and use it instead of the separate images in RoboHelp. This is the approach I'd suggest and that I use myself.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Dropped Frames and Render/Playback problems in Final Cut Express HD

I use FCE HD and edit HD video off my Sony camcorder. Recently I've got rid of my old Imac G5 and have a newer 2GHz PowerPC G5 with more RAM (2GB) off a friend because my old mac wasn't fast enough and was incapable of playing back some of my edits.
At first when i got my new mac things looked faster and it was playing transitions without dropped frames etc. However now i've started editing again and imported new projects, i've got a big problem with dropped frames during playback and rendering. I get dropped frames during unedited clips let alone at transitions and for some reason, fce will no longer render video. Unedited clips from my latest project need rendering, which i've never had before, but when i try to render them the 'writing video...' pop up flashes, but nothing happens and the video is not rendered!
Now i can't watch and edit some of my projects without dropped frames stopping playback every other clip and i can't do anything with my new ones because the video need rendering but can't be rendered!
Can anyone help me out on either topic?

    Hi Ross,
Well, most people, myself included, would say you should consider yourself lucky if doing video via USB ever worked at all for you. Overall, USB is not up to the demands of video, and that is most likely why you are getting your dropped frames problem.
The solutions would be either use your internal HD or get a good external FW drive. I know this is frustrating, as it has been for many people who look at the raw specs where USB 2.0 appears faster than FW400 but in real life, for video especially, it is not.
