Dropping frames while streaming
I ahve a intel q6600(4 x 2.6) machine with 2 gigs of ram running windows XP. I have incoming 720p video. I am havng a hard time to get this box to NOT drop frames. the settings don't really matter much as it eventually drops frames. I've tried using the same output resolution as the incoming and using 14 megabit output to minimize the amount of compression but the system maxes the cpu..does NOT go into memory pressure...and it drops frames. I have a server upstairs i am streaming to. I can easily transfer a file from this quad to the server upstairs at wirespeed(100 meg fdx)without issue. card is blackmagic intensity pro witht he latest drivers directly from their site. Any ideas? what other information would you need?

It turns out FME is highly cpu bound. I read the system requirements closely and 4 x 2.66 ghz apparently isn't going to cut it. I'm now looking to build a core i-5 660 box. 3.33ghz should satisfy FME's appetite for cpu ghz. If not(based on further research) i'll head for an I7 series. In order to keep the system from dropping frames i had to drop the encoding down to 640x4xx(keeping aspect ration) at 2500 kpbs and 128k mono audio. It's not what i am wanting but it'll have to work. Now i have to figure out how much cpu i need to run 720p native at 7 mbps AND be able to be used for the multimedia slides we do during services. I don't want ot have to run multiple machines for long. I may take a gander at the AMD 6 or higher core chips if they have the raw ghz..:)

Hey guys i have a 15" powerbook with 1 GB of RAM (No external drives) which i use pretty much soley for FCP 5. its only about 6 months old and has recently started dropping frames while capturing? anyone know what the problem could be? its been driving me crazy. cheers.

Thanks for your comments but I was simply passing on my own experience and what I've personally been told by G-Tech here in the UK.
Are you suggesting it's OK for users to move, allow to overheat, or switch the power off while using external HDs?
I don't think so . . .
As I said in another post, G-Tech were courteous and efficient with me and I have no grudge against them.
I understand your discontent and we all get cross if we feel we've been let down, but I wonder if it's wise to use other people's posts to vent your feelings about one manufacturer when so many others clearly speak very highly of them.

Dropped frames while using multi bit rates in Flash Media Encoder 3
I’m using the Adobe Flash Media Encoder 3 to stream live video to a host computer at 200 Kbps. At the same time, I’m saving a copy to my hard drive at 350 Kbps. The live stream signal seems to be ok. The saved stream has dropped frames. Total bandwidth is about 615 Kbps. I’ve looked at performance marking software to see if my hard drive is slow and to check my CPU speed. I can’t see what I need to save a better copy and still keep the live stream.
Is this just a need for more CPU speed?
The encoder is on a Dell Optiplex 360 Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 @2.53GHz with 3GB RAM. The hard drive is a 152GB IDE ST3160815AS. It has write caching enabled on the disk.I saw your request for the log file in a different post. This is one of them that was made from my encoding. I don't see any answers in it.

Avoiding Dropped Frames While Printing to Tape
Hi everyone. Quick question. I'm trying to avoid dropped frames during playback while printing to Mini DV, and I just read the article everyone links to about ways to do it.
Some solutions are to reduce playback quality, lower framerate, change RT to unlimited, turn on Play Base Layer Only, etc. I was just wondering if any or all of these solutions will affect the quality of my sequence on Mini DV. I see that the lower framerate does, but the others, I can't really tell on my small camera screen.

Most of these settings are for playback only and are ignored for printing to video/edit to tape.

Jerry's tip to export a Selfcontained movie first is a very good workaround.
Andy's tips are very important too.
And finally, if your footage is on an external firewire drive, I want to tell you the importance of having an extra firewire card to make sure that your camera is on another firewire bus than your disk(s). (On your G5 all firewire ports are on the same bus and the camera slows down the bitrate of the whole chain. And so can cause dropframe problems)

Major problems with dropped frames while trying to capture
Are there any settings where you can change the sensitivity of FCP HD or any settings that I am not aware of?
Trying to capture from DigiBeta through a Sony J30 SDI, the whole thing wount go for a minute without intruption and dropped frames.
I have tryed several tapes and finally I tried to copy through FireWire on to MiniDV on my XL1on a new unused DV-tape and then from there on capture into FCP but the problem remains.
I have had some minor problems with this earlier but never as severe.
I am capturing onto a Lacie BigDisc hooked up through Firewire 800 and there ia 170 GB free so thet should not be a problem.Andreas,
The J30 specs state "All standard definition, half-inch Betacam format tapes, dating back some twenty years, can now easily be converted to a 25 Mbps DV signal and transferred to a compatible DV device via a single digital interface cable.", but you say you've tried that, and from the specs I'm assuming you'd need some conversion from the deck to go straight into FCP...like a Canopus or like you did dropping to DV tape.
Have you tried a different FW port and/or cable?
Other posts have mentioned changes of FW cables or ports as a solution, so I'm inclined to agree with David that you may require a FW800 card...we purchased one, when we bought our Big Disk Extreme. However, I don't capture to it, only archives and storage.
Are you trying to capture internally to your system drive? (I'd guess not, as I've read some of your posts and would be surprised if you were)
Any recent upgrades/updates or other changes in your config?

Hello - Apple has temporarily disabled search functionality in the discussion groups, so it's hard for me to know if this question has already been asked / answered. So, here goes:
After successfully importing video into my Mac Pro from my Sony mini-DV Handicam, I've suddenly gotten the error message in Final Cut Pro (Studio 1) that says, "Dropped frames were detected in the last attempt" on each import using many different tapes. I did not make any config changes (at least intentionally) to cause this and I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing.
Thank you.I'm capturing to my internal hard drive which has appx. 158 GB available, so I do not think that is the problem.
If you're capturing to your boot drive, that could very well be the problem (data throughput errors). The boot drive is busy enough running the OS, the FCP application, reading/writing to your FCP project file and any other processes that may be going on in the background. Trying to make it also write massive AV files at the same time is asking a bit much for it to do without encountering errors.
If you're capturing to another internal hard drive (the Mac Pro can handle 4 drives), then I'd say the problem was elsewhere.

HELP PLEASE!! Dropped Frames while capturing....lots of them!
We're running Final Cut 5.1, Quicktime 7.4, and OS 10.4.11 on a Dual 2 GHZ PPC G5. We're trying to capture whole tapes with no timecode breaks. However, more often than not :30 to 1:00 min into the capturing process we get a window that pops up stating there were dropped frames. How can we fix this? We are using a Canon XHA1 as a deck, and we've tried capturing to 3 different drives. Two internals, both 7200RPM and an external 7200RPM via firewire 800.
Any ideas? I would really like some help.QUicktime 7.4 might be the culprit. Many people having issues.
Gotta do an archive and install and get back to QT 7.2.

Dropped frames while capturing
Out of the blue I'm having problems with dropped frames during capture, and no video whatsoever is being digitized to my scratch disk after I "abort" the capture with the escape key (after an endlessly spinning pinwheel indicates the failure, but the tape in my Canon GL2 keeps running anyway). I have a 2nd Internal Drive with 120GB of storage (45GB available). I have already successfully captured three complete DV tapes with no problems, and suddenly Tape #4 started dropping frames. So does Tape #5. Could a Quicktime update be causing this problem? What's up? Final Cut Express 2.0.3.
has anyone really solved this yet? the apple advisory mentions upgrading to fce 5, but i don't see that that exists yet.
i have a sony dcr-hc96, fce 2.0.3 (willing to upgrade), os 10.4.9 and having the 5-minute "dropped frames on capture" freeze problem. i've bought defrag software and a spanking new lacie 500Gb drive for my project. no luck. i've "hid the capture scratch folder from spotlight". no luck.
i was having the issue, then, before reading the forum, unfortunately updated QuickTime to 7.3. but I was having the exact same problem in 7.2 or whatever I upgraded from anyway. I haven't tried to go back to 7.2 yet because it sounds complicated.
does anyone know the answer to this: will the QT 7.3/dropped frame problem be solved with an upgrade to FCE 4 (the newest one for sale at the Mac store)? Or, will the QT 7.3 problem be fixed with an upgrade to OS 10.4.10? [unfortunately, i can't do the latter without saying goodbye to my Pro Tools 6.9.2 and having to potentially upgrade that software, too.)

Constant Dropped Frames While Capture.

I have FCP 5 and a Sony Handycam DCR - HC19E (PAL). I'm always having dropped frames when trying to capture the video and don't know what to do.
Any help much appreciated.You appear to be capturing HDV using a single FW port.
Is that correct?
Are you capturing to the internal HD or an external FW drive?
There is no way to add a second FW bus to a Mac mini, so there will be issues. -
Dropped Frames while capturing DV
When capturing video from my Sony DV camera, the audio is always out of synch with the video which requires me to move the audio in the timeline to manually synch. The amount by which it's out of synch seems to vary, i.e. not always out of synch by the same number frames.
I believe it is dropping frames but I don't know how to fix it.
Help please.

Can you check/tell us whether your camera records sound at 12 or 16bit?
FCP works best when sound is recorded at 48khz 16 bit,
if the sound you captured is 12 bit that can cause synch issues.
Also go to main menu>Final Cut Pro>User Preferences>General and on the right hand side of the window see if boxes like "abort capture on dropped frames" are checked then recapture to see if an error window appears on dropped frames.

I am new to the FCE software. Using a format of AVCHD... don't ask me why.
When I am editing and creating I continue to run into a "dropped frame" issue... and the software sends me the message to;
Change Speed of my Disk
or / and
Decrease the number of RT Layers... I know RT is real time...
and / or
Limiting RT Bandwidth in User Preferences...
Would like to know how to do these functions?

Airport Express dropping connections while streaming music
Airport Express once conected to my existing wifi network is not streaming music correctly, instead is dropping without a continuous play.
Green light is always on.

Being out in the country my internet is provided wirelessly (WISP) and I remembered after your comment that the tech who installed our receiver dish said that the internet is being broadcast on the 2.5 ghz band on channel 7 and if any issues arise change the channel to a lower number. Never had an issue till now and updated the channel to 1 and back in business. A big thanks.

Dropped frames while recording?
HI,
I am using my G4 PowerBook for some simple, on location, live event recording. It is plugged into a two channel (stereo) source, usually the TAPE OUT or AUX from a mixer. Seperately, I have a miniDV camera setup recording live audio from the "room" as well. When I begin the recording, I use a tone generator to give me a "sync" point on both recordings. Then, when I go to post, I use the "tone" to sync my external audio track with the camera's audio track. Here is the problem... after recording for ~45 minutes to 1 hour, the PowerBook (external) recording has lost enough frames (slower) so that the audio is noticably different than the video. You can see the audio is off sync with the subjects mouth. I have recorded tones at the begining an the end and find the external recording to be ~5-6 frames shorter (slower) than the camera audio track. The longer the recording, the wider the gap becomes. I have the STP software set for 29.97 which is the same as my camera. Any help? ThanksDo you know of any other applications that can record DV that would tell me if frames were dropped? I know FCP will just end the capture, which I don't want, plus that's a lot of money to just capture some footage. I've looked at Big Mug's Capture Magic SD and that seems like a viable option, but wondering if there are other alternatives you might suggest.

Airport express dropping internet while streaming from computer
In the last week or so, everytime I try to stream video from my PC to my apple TV (2nd gen), my airport express (only router in my house) drops the internet connection. I thought at first it was my ISP, it then noticed it happened only when I was streaming movies from my PC ( have tried it with two different computers and same result). As soon as I stop streaming my internet kicks back in. I've restarted and reset both my Apple TV and airport express back to factory settings and still get the same result. In addition, the same problem occurs when i try to stream videos from my PC to my iPads or iPhone via the shared library. Curious if anyone has encountered this problem before and if it is a firmware problem and not a hardware problem.
SIdenote: Airplay in general has been unstable as well so I'm assuming the two problems are linked.And your reminder of the channels got it fixed. Speakers dropping off while streaming music from my Apple TV
I use my Apple TV to stream music to 5 locations around my house ( wired to Airport express with a powerline ethernet adaptor). recently I find that 2 or 3 locations jut disappear from my speaker list and randomly turn on and off again .
I also use my IMAC to stream music and have less of a problem with that .I use several wifi networks to overcome potential problems caused by distance, interference and excessive traffic, I'd suggest you look at your current network to see if you can't improve it or at least optimise some settings.
