Dropping like flies.

My G4 iBook, (was) running 10.4.8, won't boot.
I get the grey screen with the apple logo and the water wheel and very occasionally I get beyond that to a blue screen with no interactivity, and even more rarely I get the list of user accounts appear, but nothing beyond that.
It won't even boot from the OS DVD (holding C when switching on).
I'm guessing that since I have seen the list of users showing since the problem began that it's not a memory or motherboard issue.
Could it be the battery?
I did remark to the good lady wife only a couple of weeks ago that it might need a new battery.
Just an idea, is it possible and safe to run with the battery removed?
Wondering if that might drag it down.
Cheers in advance for any help.
Ross.

There is a small possibility that you could try resetting the failed

And, then there is a possibility that it may work better after a

  • AC Adaptors Dropping Like flies

I recently had two AC Adaptors seemingly die within days of each other. They were plugged into two different jacks and two different 'books (a Lombard and a Pismo). The Lombard's battery was not charging, so I tried swapping AC Adaptors and batteries with the Pismo as a test and soon after neither batteries were charging and the 'books shut down. I bought a new adaptor and the machines booted and the batteries charged. I am taking them back to work on Monday where they were originally plugged in when this all started.
My question is, what causes an adaptor to fail?
I just spent $70 on a new one and I don't want to short it out (if that's what happened... i.e. power surge, etc.)
    Thoughts?

There are a few things possibly happening. Faulty power at the mains [even though you tried 2 sockets] is one possibility. An electrician or someone with a voltage multi-meter could check to see if the outlets have faults. The design of the power bricks in general allows for some variance in the voltage from the mains, but large sags and spikes are not acceptable. A quality UPS with line conditioning can also cure power related issues.
Another common problem with laptop batteries not charging while AC power is connected is a broken power jack. The physical solder joint that connects the AC adapter cord to the laptop is vulnerable to breaking due to flexing and other stress. You can test the integrity of this connection by gently wiggling the AC cable where it attaches to the laptop. If there is excessive play, the actual receptacle may have detached from the logic board. Sometimes this problem is intermittent due to partial contact at certain angles of plug insertion. Unless you have soldering skills on small IC boards this usually dictates a logicboard replacement, unless the PMU is socked and detachable [not the case for your Powerbooks]. =[
Instead of buying the Apple AC adapters, you can find alternatives for about half the price from Macally and others. I have used the Macally unit with great success.

  • HELP! I pad plugged in all nite only shows 65% charged and dropping like a stone even though still plugged in.  I am in London.  Where can I get help?

HELP! I am in London and my iPad is plugged into wall via adapter and cords bought from Verizon who sold me the I pad.
It does not show it is charging
    It sometimes says "not charging"
it is plugged and % is dropping like a stone.  HELP!

Go to the home screen on the iPad. Double click the home button and where all the app's come up below, hold down on one and then proceed to press on the minus' to delete them from multitasking. Don't worry, your not deleting the actual apps.
That should clear up the 'not charging' business, and the constant dropping. You probably played some big 3D games or watched movies and didn't exit them properly (anything you exit automatically goes into multitasking) thus keeping them open in the background.
    Make sense or not working?

First off, your installation disc is in all likelihood faulty.

  • Add pictures from more than 1 machin ..doesnt even allow dra-drop like song

    Hello Ipod users.
I am trying to add pictures and system doesnt allow me to do a drag drop. I am forced to do a sync. I am not able to add pictures from other laptops. I have installed the latest itunes in that. But if i copy anything from other machine it pops up saying it will delete the existing contents.
Isnt it possible that we can copy pictures from multiple sources...?

Quote: "Can I add photos from multiple computers or user accounts to one iPod?
No, adding photos can only happen from one computer or user account."
Also your photos aren't stored in iTunes like your songs so you can't drag and drop in the same way. iTunes is used to syncronise your iPod with a photo album or folder. You can read a bit more here: iTunes and iPod: Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about Photo Sync

  • Drag and drop - like the builder?

    Hi team,
It's nice to have drag-and-drop repositioning in the builder. It would be even nicer to be able to offer it to my users.
Is there any sort of guidance available on how to replicate the functionality of P5150 of the builder?
    Thanks
    jd

    Hi JD,
Yes absolutely you can do that in APEX, however there is not really built-in support for it (although you can refactor the code used in the builder if you choose), but instead of doing that I would recommend using a 3rd party javascript library to make it much easier, two of the most commonly used for that type of drag-drop effect (generally speaking) are -
    Yahoo UI Library - http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/dragdrop/
    jQuery UI Library - http://ui.jquery.com/demos/draggable
I've used both and my preference is the jQuery library (for a few different reasons that I won't go into here), however if you follow their demos/guide you should be able to see just how easy it is to incorporate it into APEX (there is little APEX-specific coding you need to do really).
    Hope this helps,
    John.

  • Drag and drop, like magic the files just vanish!

Ever since upgrading my mid 2009 MacBook Pro to Lion, I have been having trouble copying or moving files by dragging them. I especially seem to have trouble dragging files to the desktop...  I drag them there, but they just vanish without a trace.  I also don't seem to be able to option-drag a file to make a copy of it... I drag it to a new location and it just vanishes completely.  This is driving me mad.  Anyone else having this issue?
I've run a permission repair a few times, but it's made no difference.  Any ideas?

I pasted this in answer to another thread but will post again here:
Yes I have had this problem on both my iMac and MBA. It was driving me mad! Can import files to applications like Lightroom and export but trying to copy files to another location through Finder and the files disappeared after appearing to copy.
Solution is to Force Quit Finder and Relaunch. I then rebooted and all is now fine.
Another solution I read is to paste this in Terminal:
    killall Finder && open /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app
    Hope this helps others.

  • Drag and drop like visio

I would like to know HOW can I start doing this...
Imagine a set of icons (Jbuttons can be) that I want to copy to a middle frame.
    VISIO like.
Then I want to add arrows between one to another or to several other dragged JButtons ... and if I drag the ICONS the arrow will adjust and continue stuck to the correspondent
    JButton.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

Do you have a start of you code and specific questions or are you just looking to suck some code? If you are just looking for some source, do a Google for it.

  • Version copies breeding like flies!

    Still new to Aperture.
I had a folder of images adjusted to version 2.
I used this folder selection to test for a web gallery and then to test for proof sheet printing etc,
Suddenly its full of multiple copies versions of the same images?
e.g there was only version 2 of each image, now there's version 3-7 of the identical image?.....something Im not interested in at ALL
    Any help here?
Plus...how to get rid of them?
    Cheers.

two possibilities that immediately come to mind:
    1. in Aperture/Preferences, you have Create new versions when making adjustments turned on.
    2. (more likely) you moved images from the folder from one album type to another during testing. we've found that if you move an image from a smart album to a web album, a new version will be created. this might have happened to you since you mention both 'web' and 'print' in your message.
to get rid of the extras, either locate them manually and delete them, or turn on the Filter HUD for the folder and search for: Version Name contains ' - Version ' (with a leading and trailing space).
if you need more help, please let us know.

  • Sound drops like its compressed on music

I have rca audio cables to my TV and when I play music the sound compresses very quiet when a lot of instruments start. Example: Acoustic guitar at beginning of song and music is very very loud but once whole band start it goes to about 1/3 - 1/2 of the volume. Sound check is off. I have tried it with off and on and same results. Defective AppleTV?

    Hi
In the Settings page make sure 'Sound Check' is off, as this limits the dynamic range of the material played back - I didn't know what it was but it sounded it awful when I had the settin set to On.

  • Should the print company I use be able to change a file to spot color for me?

I recently sent a document in to a major print company to have a folder printed.  The document was created in Illustrator using only two colors. They said they could not print it because it was still more than two colors and that I needed to change it to a two color document using Pantone Spot Color.
I've never had to do that for a print company before but I've also never had a two color project before. I opened the file back up and selected my objects and "recolored" the work and deleted all the swatches aside from the two colors I needed that were now Pantone Spot Color (HSB). It literally took me 2 minutes.
The reason I am asking is because they pretty much said that I don't know what I'm doing, which to a designer is completely insulting.  We all do new things from time to time but that is an insult. Shouldn't they, a large print company with years of experience, know how to do this for me? They had the original design file.. Maybe they don't know what they are doing?
Any clarity on as to why I needed to do it and not them is greatly appreciated.  Also.. any direction as the best way to use spot color over cmyk is appreciated too.

...which to a designer is completely insulting...
What's so special about "a designer"?
Prior to the mid 1980s, designers could get away with prima Donna attitudes, because they (or their employers) were paying pre-press "color houses" around $350 per hour to tweak colors to sooth their oh-so-erudite discernment and hyper-developed color sensitivities, and to gain reimbursement for the $100 per plate lunches on proof-check days.
That all changed when designers (and their employers) got tired of paying those fees and took on the responsibility for the technical side of assembling their designs into something printable. That was the so-called "desktop revolution" and "revolution" was not a bad word for it. It turned a huge industry on its head. Color houses which didn't adopt PostScript devices and workflows were soon dropping like flies--and so were designers who didn't climb down off their lofty pedestals and buckle down to learning the technical realities of what they were doing.
Don't be insulted, but the simple fact is, you still don't know what you're doing if you think converting any given process color job to a two-spot job is "just a couple of minutes' work." Only in the very simplest designs would it be as simple as re-defining a couple of process Swatches as spot color Swatches.
In Illustrator in particular, doing so won't even work if the original Swatches were not originally defined as Global Swatches.
If those two process Swatches were used in any Blends, converting them to spot will likely not update the intermediate steps of the Blend. In earlier versions of Illustrator, the same problem applied to grads.
You can often get away with not having properly trapped the file with process swatches, because there are potentially four component inks which may be shared between adjacent different-color objects. Spot inks are not so forgiving. Trapping is essential if the two spot colors touch.
So you really expect a printer to just have a policy to do that for you? And thereby bear responsibility for anything they may misinterpret or overlook that may cause a registration sliver on press and thereby loose every bit of profit on the printing (which these days is cut-throat competitive)?
No. It's your responsibility to build the file correctly. The printing houses I use know better. They know I would have a coniption fit if I ever caught them modifying one of my files. They know they are to return any problem file to me for correction.

  • Mac Pro will not boot with Snow Leopard - need help!

I have had a lot of issues with Snow Leopard since I upgraded from 10.5.8. Most of my problems started after installing Office 2007. I finally wiped the hard drive and reinstalled everything. No problems until last week. Start up was taking longer and had to reboot a couple of times because of grey screen. So I would just put computer to sleep. Yesterday the computer was frozen on screen saver with scrambled rows of pixels on screen two and the main monitor had a frozen image.
I initially pulled all peripherals out and pulled the power plug for 5 minutes. I have left the peripherals out and pulled the second monitor as well. I tried pulling the power plug during a few more starts but nothing gets me to a complete start up screen.
I have tried resetting PRAM and VRAM and tried a safe boot. I tried booting from Snow Leopard and my Leopard disk stayed on either a blue or gray screen with spinning beach ball (on gray screen).
Put original install disk in and booted from using D to check the hardware. Good news is that the hardware test was OK. I did the extended test.
All different kind of start up problems.
    - Some start with start up sound goes to Apple logo to blue screen to grey screen with beachball
    - Some start ups with no initial sound then Apple logo to blue screen to grey screen with no cursor or beachball
    - Some start ups with no sound to gray screen to blue screen to grey screen.
I have no problem wiping the HD1 again but I can't even get the OS disk to be recognized with holding the C key during start up. This last time it went to a blue screen (holding the C key) and a cursor.
I don't know what else to do - Please help!!!

There are lists (MacIntouch and MacFixit) of hardware / software support issues with 10.6. Accelerateyourmac is another place to watch.
There were some really long threads back in Sept about printer driver support.
The 7300 firmware was more about Windows support; those cards are failing and dropping like flies (how DO they know 3 yrs has expired anyway?) and they don't support SL features like OpenCL etc so I'd invest in ATI 4870, best graphic card and works in all models Mac Pro.
Lots and lots of bootable clones for backup. Never need to wipe and install again.

  • Can a nook be used with os7

Can a Nook be used with Apple products?  I don't want network or virus problems.

Android is the most malware-prone, insecure platform there is - but millions of users seem to survive without dropping like flies!
    I can't answer Q.1 but as for Q2:
How safe is your smartphone? (Android is the top malware collector)
A major source of malware, apart from sites like Facebook and Hotmail, is the Android Marketplace:
More than 50 applications available via the official Android Marketplace were initially found to contain a virus.
Analysis suggests that the booby-trapped apps may have been downloaded up to 200,000 times. The apps are also known to be available on unofficial Android stores too. Once a booby-trapped application is installed and run, the virus lurking within, known as DroidDream, sends sensitive data, such as a phone's unique ID number, to a remote server. It also checks to see if a phone has already been infected and, if not, uses known exploits to bypass security controls and give its creator access to the handset. This bestows the ability to install any code on a phone or steal any information from it.
Remote removal of the booby-trapped apps may not solve all the security problems they pose. The remote kill switch will not remove any other code that may have been dropped onto the device as a result of the initial infection.
Moreover, more than 99% of Android phones are potentially leaking data that, if stolen, could be used to get the information they store online.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13422308
The data being leaked is typically used to get at web-based services such as Google Calendar.
The open nature of the Android platform was a boon and a danger, and as Facebook have already discovered it is also a very attractive criminal playground.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12633923
Smartphones and social networking sites are likely to become the next big target for cyber criminals, according to a security industry report.
Symantec's annual threat analysis warns that the technologies are increasingly being used to spread malicious code
Users of Facebook, Twitter and Google's mobile operating system, Android, are said to be particularly vulnerable.
In several cases, the security holes were exploited and used to install harmful software on Android handsets - suggesting that criminals now view smartphone hacking as a potentially lucrative area, and Android is still in the firing line:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15600697
Android: it's getting worse: Juniper found a 400% increase in Android malware from 2009 to the summer of 2010.  We have since seen exponential grow in Android malware over the last several months. The Juniper Global Threat Center found that the months of October and November are shaping up to see the fastest growth in Android malware discovery in the history of the platform. The number of malware samples identified in September increased by 28% over the number of the known Android malware samples. October showed a 110% increase in malware sample collection over the previous month and a striking 171% increase from what had been collected up to July 2011.
July 2012: Smartphones running Google's Android software have been hijacked by an illegal botnet, according to a Microsoft researcher.
Botnets are large illegal networks of infected machines - usually desktop or laptop computers - typically used to send out masses of spam email.
Researcher Terry Zink said there was evidence of spam being sent from Yahoo mail servers by Android devices:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18720565
One question Juniper always get when discussing our research is if Apple’s iOS is more or less secure than Android? Maybe, but it’s not necessarily because of the security or lack of vulnerabilities in the platforms themselves. The main reason for the malware epidemic on Android is because of different approaches that Apple and Google take to police their application stores. Android’s open applications store model, which the lacks code signing and an application review process that Apple requires, makes it easy for attackers to distribute their malware. There is still no upfront review process in the official Android Market that offers even the hint of a challenge to malware writers that their investment in coding malware will be for naught.
    http://globalthreatcenter.com/?p=2492
At least six different varieties of malware were discovered hidden in applications that were distributed through a Chinese download service.
Several pieces of malware were also found on iPhones, however only devices that had been "jailbroken" to bypass Apple's security were affected.
The company's process of pre-vetting all new applications is believed to have spared its devices from a major attack.
(Apple closed out 2011 with a commanding 52.1 percent share of mobile devices tracked browsing the Web, while Google's Android had just 16.2 percent.)
    And most recently this:
Millions of people are using Android apps that can be tricked into revealing personal data, research indicates.
Scientists tested 13,500 Android apps and found almost 8% failed to protect bank account and social media logins.
These apps failed to implement standard scrambling systems, allowing "man-in-the-middle" attacks to reveal data that passes back and forth when devices communicate with websites.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20025973
    And this:
Freezing an Android phone can help reveal its confidential contents, German security researchers have found.
The team froze phones for an hour as a way to get around the encryption system that protects the data on a phone by scrambling it.
Google introduced the data scrambling system with the latest version of Android called Ice Cream Sandwich.
The attack allowed the researchers to get at contact lists, browsing histories and photos.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21697704
    Update from May 2013:
Malware targeting mobile devices is rapidly growing in both the number of variants found in the wild and in their complexity and sophistication, but the only platform being actively targeted is Google's Android, which researchers now say is resembling Windows on the desktop PC.
    http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/05/14/mobile-malware-exploding-but-only-for- android
And in early June 2013 a highly toxic trojan began attacking the Android platform:
    According to reports:
Obad.a exploits previously unknown Android bugs, uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections to spread to near-by handsets, and allows attackers to issue malicious commands using standard SMS text messages.
By exploiting this vulnerability, malicious applications can enjoy extended Device Administrator privileges without appearing on the list of applications which have such privileges," Unuchek said. "As a result of this, it is impossible to delete the malicious program from the smartphone after it gains extended privileges."
    More information here:
    http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/06/behold-the-worlds-most-sophisticated-and roid-trojan
A recent study on smartphone malware has found that 92 percent of nefarious mobile software is targeted at Google's Android platform, and the amount of attacks are growing:
The latest data released in June 2013 by Juniper Networks reveals that Android malware has grown at a "staggering rate" over the last three years. In 2010, it accounted for just 24 percent of all mobile malware, while as of this March the platform accounts for nearly all of it.
In the last year alone, the total number of malicious apps has grown 614 percent to 276,259. The annual Mobile Threats support also identified more than 500 third-party Android application stores worldwide that are known to host mobile malware.
    http://newsroom.juniper.net/press-releases/juniper-networks-finds-mobile-threats -continue-ram-nyse-jnpr-1029552
The far reaching vulnerability, discovered by San Francisco's Bluebox Security, involves "discrepancies in how Android applications are cryptographically verified & installed, allowing for APK code modification without breaking the cryptographic signature."
Android apps (packaged as an "APK") are signed with an encryption key (just like iOS apps) to prevent a malicious party from changing the code. Signed apps are expressly designed to enable the system to detect any tampering or modification.
However, due to the newly discovered Android flaw, a rogue developer can trick the system into thinking that a compromised app is still legitimate, giving it system wide access to do virtually anything.
"A device affected by this exploit could do anything in the realm of computer malice, including become a part of a botnet, eavesdrop with the microphone, export your data to a third party, encrypt your data and hold it hostage, use your device as a stepping stone to another network, attack your connected PC, send premium SMS messages, perform a DDoS attack against a target, or wipe your device," a representative of the company wrote AppleInsider:
    http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/07/03/security-flaw-opens-all-modern-android -devices-to-zombie-botnet-takeover
The problem (with Android) is: that committee design has failed to make Android a good platform for either users or for developers. By not making any hard choices and giving people what they said they wanted, Google simply abandoned the future to cling tenaciously to the past.
Rather than conceptualizing and engineering really new solutions to historical computing problems as Apple did with iOS, Google has only attempted to wrest control away from iOS via volume shipments and has effectively sent mobile computing back in time into the 1990s, resulting in the same malware, spyware, viruses and usability issues of Windows.
    http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/07/14/editorial-googles-android-haunted-by-s teve-jobs-warnings-on-app-signing-security
The Department of Homeland Security considers the malware threat from Android so serious that they issued a public warning on July 23, 2013:

  • 750 GB Seagate Drives not shown on Xserve

    Hi there,
i installed new Seagate ST3750640A Version 3.AAE Drives on a Xserve RAID to increase Capacity. It's an Xserve RAID from 2003.
I created a Array with 2 Discs as a RAID 0 to test the whole thing.
The Drives are shown in RAID-Admin and ich have the latest firmware installed which comess with the 1.5.1 Raid Admin.
    I'M using a Fibre-Channel Card.
Serve is a Xserve G4 running 10.4.9 Server.
o here is my Problem after i created the Array i can't do anything with the Array on the Server. It's not shown in Disc-Utility. I rebooted the Server changed the Fibre-Channel Cable. Tried it on a other Server. Nothing.
In System-Profiler i can see that under Fibre-Channel that there is the Xsere RAID attached. But i can't see the Array to format it in HFS or else.
I tried it on both sides of the RAID.
MY old Hitachi Deskstar 180 Drives which come direct from Apple are working.
    Anyone else having this sympton.
    Thanks in advance.

Ebay is an excellent place to find empty ADMs
We recently bought three, added them to a 4x250 array, took out the 250's (and have them as spares for our other 5 raids with 250's), and put in 7 750 seagates. Worked beautifully. Our 250's are starting to drop like flies now that it's been 3+ yrs.
