Dropping signal On WPA Network

At school my laptop connets to a WPA wireless network at school. I have an issue of it dropping the connection whil i am using it. I can connect ocasionally but It either drops the signal or won't connect at all.
Thanks,
Greg

Leave the modem disconnected from router .... reset the router for few seconds .... after reset check the Ip address you are getting on Local area Connection .... if getting any valid Ip try to login to setup page ....

  • Dropping off line/off network

After a long period of zero problems I suddenly found that my imac-G5 is randomly dropping offline/out of network. Sometimes when left alone for a short time, other times longer, such as overnight, or going to the gym. Three hours later I come back and I'm offline. Network connection gone, and I have to re-up.
This concerns me as the first time (the next morning) I found a few applications I had left off, now running and the network connection severed. It has since happened several times. Could I have a spyware/virus or self-destructing HD?

Miriam: Here is the response I got from Applecare, a gentleman named Derrick helped me on this. Apparently it is our new cordless phone(s) that has interfered and undone the airport and hence the internet connection(s). Here is a copy 7 paste of a reference he sent me, outlining sources of said problem:
    AirPort: Potential sources of interference
Metal, bulletproof glass, and dense paper are a few things that might interfere with your AirPort signal. Here you can learn all about potential sources of interference.
    Preventing Interference for Wireless Networking
If an AirPort network is out of range or often interrupted, it may be due to interference.
    Interference results in:
    • A decrease in the range of contact with the base station.
    • A decrease in the rate of data transfer.
    Sources of Interference for AirPort
The farther away the interference source, the less likely it is to cause an issue. The following items can cause interference with AirPort communication:
    • Microwave ovens: Placing your computer or an AirPort Base Station near a microwave oven that is in use may cause interference.
    • Direct Satellite Service (DSS) RF leakage: The coax cable that came with certain types of satellite dishes may cause interference. Obtain newer cables if you suspect RF leakage.
    • Certain electrical devices such as power lines, electrical railroad tracks, and power stations.
    • 2.4 GHz phones: A cordless telephone that operates in this range may cause interference with AirPort communication when used. There are also other devices that operate in the 2.4 GHz range that could cause interference.
    • Metal objects: If possible, move metal objects or change the placement of the Base Station so the path between your AirPort equipped-computer and the Base Station is free from metal objects that may cause interference.
    • X-10 video senders (transmitters/receivers) that operate in the 2.4 GHz bandwidth.
    • Any other devices that operate in the 2.4 GHz bandwidth (microwaves, cameras, baby monitors, and so on).
Note: Some devices may not overtly state that they operate in the 2.4 Ghz band. The operations manual should indicate whether a particular device makes use of the 2.4 Ghz band. Typically, these will be advertised as "Dual Band" devices.
Effect of Home and Office Elements on AirPort Communication
Where you are located and what materials you are surrounded by can have an impact on your AirPort performance. The table below shows common elements and their potential for interference.
    Type of Barrier
    Interference Potential
    Wood
    Low
    Plaster
    Low
    Synthetic material
    Low
    Glass
    Low
    Water
    Medium
    Bricks
    Medium
    Marble
    Medium
    Paper rolls
    High
    Concrete
    High
    Bulletproof glass
    High
    Metal
    Very high
How to reduce effects of interference
If you experience less than optimum performance due to interference from other devices that operate in the 2.4 GHz bandwidth, you may be able to reduce the effect of interference by changing to a different channel. Less than optimum performance may be characterized by low signal strength in the AirPort menu bar item, slow connection to the Internet, or slow file transfers between wireless computers. Using AirPort Admin Utility, you should try switching away from the channel that is experiencing interference. If you are currently using the default channel of 10, for example, try switching to channel 1.
The location of AirPort Admin Utility is normally /Applications/Utilities/ on Mac OS X computers. For Mac OS 9 computers, use Sherlock or Command-F in the Finder to locate AirPort Admin Utility. If you are using an AirPort Extreme Base Station, you need to click the Show All Settings button after connecting to the base station.
Note: Wireless Internet access requires an Internet service provider (fees may apply) and AirPort (or AirPort-compatible) wireless Ethernet card and base station. Some ISPs are not compatible with AirPort. For more information, see AirPort: Requirements for Wireless Internet Access.

  • Dropped Signal...I'm Going to Go Crazy

    Hello,
I have the Airport Extreme 802.11 base station and it's worked well for two years. About two weeks ago, I started losing the signal and having network timeout connections. I talked with the ISP (Virgin Media) and the signal is coming into the house fine. Is it possible that the base station is failing? The Airport Utility is 5.4.2 and firmware is 7.4.2. The strange thing is I can always get a strong signal on my laptop, but my iMac and PC laptop will not pick up the signal. I'm not sure what to do and am going crazy since I rely on the connection for work. If it is likely to be the firmware problem, how do I revert back to 7.3?
    Thanks.

    lsb
    Hi lsb,
I have what seems like a very similar problem. The Wi-Fi signal from my AEBS (802.11n w/ Gigabit Ethernet, not Dual Band though) just keeps dropping off the face of the planet. When it happens for me though, it happens for all computer/devices connecting over WiFi (2 Macs, 1 Windows Laptop, 2 iPhones). The WiFi network cannot be discovered from any device — it's as though it doesn't exist. In my case if I just wait (leaving the AEBS on and untouched), the connection will magically restore itself after a random period of time. I tried power cycling with varying degrees of success, but usually if I just leave it it will come back eventually. It is as you described, highly frustrating to say the least.
    What I've done:-
I have connected the two computers that are in the same room as the AEBS (PowerMac G5 & Windows Laptop running Vista) via Ethernet rather than WiFi, and they are fine. The router isn't freezing, or dropping the internet connection, or anything like that. The connection is fast and stable over Ethernet, but the WiFi just comes and goes as it pleases.
I too thought maybe something had changed to cause interference (the setup was working fine for a while with no problems, and then it just started dropping out), but for the life of me I couldn't think of anything that changed. No new wireless radio-transmitting devices have been introduced to the environment, and now new "other" WiFi network have popped up (I live in a set of Townhouses and am familiar with the names of the other WiFi networks that my neighbours are operating). Nonetheless I checked the channels using iStumbler to see if I was using the same as anyone else, and I am at least 3 channels away from everyone else. At this stage, I don't believe the problem is interference-related.
I tried reverting the firmware in the AEBS back to 7.3.2 as well, as suggested, and at first I thought it had fixed it. Everything seemed to go stable for around 24 hours (as far as I noticed anyway - I'm obviously not at the computer 24 hours a day to monitor it, and like I mentioned, it just "comes back" after a while). But, then little by little, the dropouts returned, increasing in frequency. Just this afternoon it's probably dropped some 6 or 7 times in the past few hours.
The only thing that I can think that I've done differently in recent times is update the PowerMac G5 to 10.5.8. Others with some MacBooks and MacBook Pro's have had 10.5.8-specific WiFi issues that have been widely reported, and then patched by Apple, but this problem is different because it seems to be related to the AEBS rather than the computer. I am wondering however, if something that changed in 10.5.8, possibly to do with the interaction between my PowerMac G5 & the AEBS is causing it to have a fit. That's a long-shot though, because it would be highly strange for one computer to cause the AEBS to "drop" the WiFi broadcast entirely for all machines. The older MBP is at this stage still running 10.5.7.
Can you advise if you updated your machine to 10.5.8 when it became available? That way I can know whether it is possibly related.
Things I'm going to try next:-
    - Turn off WiFi completely on the PowerMac G5 that is now wired in with Ethernet. I did still have it on in addition to the internet, mainly for the purposes of monitoring whether the WiFi was dropping out (which it was). This is my feeble attempt to perhaps eliminate what i'll call the "10.5.8 AEBS WiFi poisoning effect", and see how it goes.
    - Revert the AEBS back even further to 7.2.1 firmware version. Pardon another story, but when I first got my AEBS, I had *chronic* issues with it just hanging completely and requiring a power cycle many many times per day. I can't remember exactly what Firmware I was on while that was happening, but suffice it to say, I reverted to 7.2.1, and all was good. It ran rock-solid, all day long for months on end. Updates would become available, and I would always ignore them because of the previous pain I'd experienced. The only reason I'd updated to 7.4.2 is because I recently moved and had to re-setup my network, and for whatever reason the config of the AEBS had stuffed up and I had to reset it back to default. Still, I couldn't seem to get it to work properly for whatever reason and had to re-load the firmware. 7.4.2 was the latest update available (and I'd forgotten how to select older versions at that minute), so I just went with it. Perhaps a mistake? Time will tell.
    - Failing, the above two steps restoring the prior stability to my network, I will investigate somehow downgrading my PowerMac to 10.5.7 to see if that helps somehow, because this instability *seems* to have only kicked in after I upgraded it to 10.5.8. I would love to just upgrade to Snow Leopard and be done with it, but alas it is Intel only, and this beast is a PowerPC (the last of them). Probably time to sell it off and replace it, even though it is still a highly capable machine :-|
Anways, lsb — please update us on how your experience has gone, either good or bad, and I'll try to do the same. Of course, if anyone else has any insights, that would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Michael

  • Airport dropping signal

I have just got a new Imac have got it onto my home network. Today Airport has begun to drop signal when the time machine is updating. I keep getting messages that say the Data disk isnt connected. I am using a time capsule. I dont get this problem with the 2 G4 powerbooks I have that backup to the same TC. Airport seems to be looking for new networks every 20 seconds.... is this normal?? I havent noticed this on my powerbooks?
    Anyone got any clues??
Just thought. Is there a setting that will shut down Airport when the computer sleeps?? I have it set on never sleep at the moment and display sleep after 10 min.
Thanks for any help that you guys can post!
    Cheers

Mine has dropped a couple times the last day or so.
I'm thinking it was the security update they just
released. It had some stuff in there related to
    airport. Did you install it?
Yes, I did install it. But this was happening before the secuity update. I think it's more likely related to the firmware upgrade I did. Did you do that one?

  • Time capsule dropped signal - use as client only?

    Hi all -
A two part question/dilema if you can bare with me.  Trying to learn/understand as well as get myself the best setup.
My TC is nearly 3 yrs old and has always been my router and backup, no problems.  I moved and in the new house find that the TC was dropping the internet signal to my computer.  I had optimum come out twice to check the signal to the house and it was fine.  The TC sits in a wood tv cabinet and there are two basic house walls btwn the TC and computer.  Interference should be nill.
I have an airport express in the same room as the TC for airplay.  This worked fine.  One day i moved it from say 5 feet away into another room, 25 feet away, and found the airplay would not function.  When i moved it back closer to the TC worked great on again.  It seems anything 20 feet away the airplay stops working.
What are the odds that my TC has lost signal strength over the years and/or has a glitch and drops its broadcast signal?   Or is there a chance a setting is wrong that is causing a weak signal between the devices..... my computer for internet and the express for airplay?  Even without an internet signal from outside shouldn't these two devices be super fast speaking to each other on my home internal network without flaw?  Can i test this?
For the second part of my inquiry, if i get a 3rd party router to be the main source of wireless:
    1. Can i hook up the TC to "strengthen" the 3rd party signal without interfering?  My fear is that if TC broadcasts i'll run into the same weak/dropped signals on devices that hook up to it overe the 3rd party.
    2. Can i make the TC a non-broadcasting "client" only unit for backups only?
    3.  Can my airport express "extend" my 3rd party network without worry of weaking the signal?  Or am i better off using "client" only if i know the 3rd party provides a strong and clear wireless signal?
thanks very much in advance.  I went from never dropping an internet signal to now losing the internet and having airplay working only when TC and airport express are 5 feet from each other.  this can't be right, not for apple products!
    Cheers,
    Joe

Wi-Fi devices don't degrade in the manner you describe.  I'd blame a difference between your old and new houses.
What Wi-Fi band are your clients (and the AirPort Express) using to connect?  If they're using the 5 GHz band, selecting one of the higher-numbered channels (149 and up) can significantly increase the broadcast power.  I'd also select "Use wide channels" in the "Wireless Network Options" panel.
I suspect that the problems you're seeing are due to too weak a signal.  You can investigate the signal and noise level that each of your devices is seeing using the advice in the second message of this thread.
I won't try to answer your question about third-party routers, as I have little experience with them.

  • My Airport keeps dropping signals!!

I am losing my mind!!! We have an airport extreme base station connected to our Vonage router from the DSL modem. It was all working just fine and then one day it just started to drop the signal throughout the day. It does in and out but still shows that I have full signal in the airport bars in my top menu. I tried the internet without the airport and just plugged directly in from the DSL and it worked perfectly. I also tried it with the airport out from the DSL and leaving the vonage router out of the equation and it dropped signals . this tells me that it is the airport.
In the house we also have two other airport extremes. they both extend the range of our network and one of them is used to connect to the stereo for itunes.
My system all worked fine before the system update and now it doesn't. I am at a total loss and am exhausted from trying to deal with this anymore. is there a soloution floating around in here that i am simply too frazzled to see?

I don't know if this is the solution or not, but I noticed after the 10.4.5 update, I could only see access points on channel 6.
My own access point was on channel 1 and I couldn't see it or connect to it, even with the SSID being fully broadcast. I changed the access point (Linksys WAP54G) to channel 6 and I'm connected for over 2 days with a rock solid connection.
I still do not see any access points in my neighborhood, including my second access point which is on channel 14 (Linksys WRT54G).
Let me know if this works for you.
    Regards,
    Sparkus

  • Bandwidth usage/signal strength/dropped signal WRT160nv2

    Three questions
    1. How can I determine how much bandwidth each of my network devices are using.  Is there anyway to tell using Linksys easylink which is installed on my machine? I have a WRT160nv2 router.
    2. Is there anyway to boost signal strength through internal settings. If so, how do I do that.
    3. Been experiencing dropped signal for some wireless devices. Is there any way to determine why this happens and is there a fix for this problem.
    thanks

    1. Sorry no.
    2. Sorry no.
    3.  Change these settings in the router.  Disable UPnP, under wireless settings Beacon Interval 50, RTS and Fragmentation threshold 2304.  Change to channel 1.  Save settings.   Reconnect.

  • Airport Drops Signal - UPDATE, no fix

I've been having the same problem as most of the people in this forum right now. Dropped or weak airport signal, even though your sitting right next to the router. People have seemed to attributed the problem to firmware updates on the card or the basestation. It happened to me right when I updated to 10.4.4 and the APEX to 6.3, right around the time of Macworld.
So I went to the Apple store today to see if the genius bar could help me out. The 2 guys there had seen the problem recently in a few other computers, and we were able to diagnose it as a software/firmware problem. They had no official information directly from Apple about the problem, but assured me that they watch these boards and probably know about this problem.
Their diagnosis was to either send the PB in for a $300 repair, which wouldn't fix it anyway, or wait for the next update and hope that that fixes it. Not the answer that I wanted, but at least I know i'm not going crazy.
Can we find a way to fix it temporarily? Anyone been successful downgrading firmware or doing an erase and install? Has anyone had a different result finding a fix? I'm really not enjoying being tethered to my 20 ft ethernet cable right now.

I actually tried that a while back, but no luck. It doesn't seem to be an issue with my basestation. I know alot of people have had fixes when they downgraded firmware in their Airport Extreme Base Stations, but for me, its and issue with my Powerbook.
I know this because i'm using a Dlink router. But i tried my APEX basestation and still no luck. Went to my mom's house and couldn't see her network. Tried it at work and weak and dropped signal there. The final nail in the coffin was at the Apple store where I could barely pick up their network while I was surrounded by macs that had full signal.
I did an archive and install, downgraded to 10.4, and then tried to install the updates one by one, no luck. I checked the firmware on the card, which said 3.5.something, but it was still not working. I went throught all the updates and the signal never got better. I set-up new users, trashed preferences, reset PRAM, fixed permissions, all the regular stuff, still broken.
I KNOW it's an issue with my computer, not the basestation. I did get a pop-up window that asked me to upgrade my airport when i installed the 10.4.4combo update. I'm wondering if that did it.

  • SCCM remote control keeps dropping out when another network adaptor loses connection

    Hey guys,
Hopefully someone will be able to help me out
at work, we are running SCCM 2012, and I use SCCM 2012 config manager to manage the clients etc
We have a particularly annoying issue with SCCM remote control; it constantly drops out when a network connection on the client machine disconnects or changes state, even if its not interface I'm remote controlling through
    Here's an example for you:
a laptop with a wired, and wireless connection:
I remote control the machine through the wired network address (lets say 192.168.0.1), but if the wireless connection drops out (someone turns it off or it breaks) the remote control client will kick me off, lock the screen, and I have to wait 20-30 seconds
before it will accept my connection again
This happens with any network adaptor that's installed on the client
Here is a copy of the logs re-creating this issue: https://www.dropbox.com/s/nu4w28d44xky3rg/CmRcService.log
(I've edited it to take out usernames and IP addresses as they are publicly accessible)
So my question, does any one know how to fix this issue? I see it uses WMI, is there anyway to get WMI to ignore an interface?
    Thanks heaps,
    Harry

This is going to be done by design for security reasons. If the network connect for whatever reason is down the pc will automatically be locked.

I couldn't find the edit button on my original post so I am posting an update here.
I have gone through more apps and have had good luck on all but one more.  And it's not that the app doesn't work, I am talking about the Yahoo Weather app, It works fine, but when you swipe between cities the screen lags a bit and it sometimes doesn't move between pages the way it should.  On iOS 7.1.2 it was smooth as butter but on iOS 8.0, not so much.  I will post a note in the app store to let them know.  I really like the Yahoo app better than the new stock app.
I have been going through my games and they all work fine. Angry Birds (Original and Stella), Canabalt, Minecraft, Bejeweled 2, Silly Walks, PopWords, Doodle Jump, Deep Green all seem to work just fine.
Starbucks app works as it should.
I will stop back again next week after I have had the weekend to play with it in detail and post my thoughts again.

  • TS1398 How do I read the WPA network key on my iPhone?

I have an iPhone 4 that is already accessing the network. However, the network key is not written on the bottom of the router and I didn't memorize it.
I want to give my MacBook access to the same network and I can't seem to pull-up the WPA key on my phone.

I don't think you can.  I had the same issue, but I remembered my password finally.  I look in the iphone and theres no option to view the wpa network key.
If you have a different computer hook to the wifi, you can view the network key.
If you don't have one, google on how to reset your network key for you router.

Try restarting your WiFi router by removing power for 30 seconds.
On your iPad use Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings

I tried to access 192.168.1.1 and all it ever gives me is the famous Page cannot be found........I drop signal when im on the internet and it takes forever to find a page or it comes up Page cannot be found....usually all I have to do is refresh the page and the page appears fine. But what makes no sense is both PC's do this and Ive tried the modem directly hooked up to both PC's and it works fine...............HELP PLEASE

Leave the modem disconnected from router .... reset the router for few seconds .... after reset check the Ip address you are getting on Local area Connection .... if getting any valid Ip try to login to setup page ....
