Drum mapping

Hi , my friend gave me a nice no-name e-drumset. It works fine with GarageBand but the only thing I want to know is how can I change the sounds on the pads?
I can only get a rimclick instead of a snare beat. I tried already midipipe but this doesn't work. I bet that there are hundreds of musicians out there who have the same question. I hope you can help me.

  • Has anyone noticed this V-Drums mapping bug in Drum Designer?

    Hi guys
There seems to be a bug in the v-drums mapping for Drum Designer... wondering if anyone else has noticed this?
On standard Roland V-Drums kits, the toms are mapped as follows:
    High tom: C2
    Low tom: A1
    Floor tom: G1
On some of the Drum designer kits, such as "Neo Soul" and "Retro Rock", the above tom mapping works correctly.
However, for other kits, such as "SoCal" and "Roots Kit", the low tom is played when either the low tom (A1) or the floor tom (G1) is played on the V-Drums kit.
It appears that for some reason, there are some kits such as the two mentioned above, that are mapped incorrectly so that the same low tom sound is played when the drummer is either hitting the low tom or the floor tom. I am using a standard Roland TD12 kit.
I've raised this as a bug using Apple's "Logic Feedback" page - hopefully they will check it out soon!
    Cheers,
    Mike

There are 2 work arounds for this situation.
    - edit the midi note sent by the module to set it to F1 (kit - inst - F4 - F5 - note number)
    - insert a midi transformer between your Roland module and the drummer track in logic's midi environnement window
The second option is more tricky but it opens up a whole word of other tranformations which are worth exploring.

  • How to make definitive a midi drum mapped track

It escapes me the way to make definitive a midi drum mapped track. In other words I'd want to transform all mapped notes in real notes.

  • Drum Mapping MIDI? Ala Nuendo/SX?

Coming from Nuendo/SX, is there anything similar to midi drum mapping?
If you have ever used the program, you would know, it has an excellent way to map out beats - you simply select the range (4th, 8th, 16th) and the matrix is sort of like a midi REASON matrix where you can PAINT an entire 16th high hat on every 8th or 16th note.
Then move on to snare, then kick.
Can't seem to find the solution in Logic.

  • Drum mapping out since 10.1

For some reason my drum mapping is all over the place on all of my compositions since upgrading to 10.1. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I really don't want to have to re-map everything back into place.
The only other thing that's changed recently is I've connected a different controller keyboard but surly that wouldn't cause problems like this?
    THANKS

Btw.. quick way in piano roll is; (In case you are not doing this...)
Click on key in Piano Keyboard to the left in Piano Roll to select all notes in region for specific key you clicked on
or select note in piano roll and press Shift + E
Now drag one of the notes in piano roll up or down to new note position
or use Option + Up/Down arrows to transpose up/down 1 semitone or shift + Option + Up/down arrow to transpose up/down 12 semitones

  • Help Needed!! - Yamaha Drum Mapping

This has probably come up before but the things I've tried havn't seemed to work:
I need to remap the Yamaha DTXplorer drums in Logic Express, as the snare is currently silent and the kick does some sort of roll.
I've tried using midipipe already (which caused more problems than it solved so would prefer to avoid that at all costs). I've also tried inserting a mapped instrument into the clicks&ports layer in the environment, and then remapping the 'output notes' to what they should be (e.g A0-C1 and G0-D1) but there is still no sound produced when I hit the pads, or on playback after I've recorded them.
The other thing is I would like to be able to use a MIDI keyboard as well without causing a problem with that.
I am a beginner and despite spending hours trying to sort this out by myself I've hit a brick wall. Is anyone able to offer a simple tutorial to sort this out?
    Thanks in advance
    Dan

    Many thanks for the reply.
Currently all pads work correctly apart from the kick and the snare. The snare for example has no audio assigned to it, if I was to transpose wouldn't the other parts of the drum kit then match up incorrectly? I also want to have the correct setup when recording, rather than just at the playback stage so I can hear exactly what is being recorded.
I'm basically looking for some step-by-step instructions that I can try in order to fix it, I used to understand logic a lot better but after not using it for years I'm back to trial and error with things.

  • Is there a Cubase-style GM Drum Map in Logic?

    Hi!
I've been really happy about choosing Logic, but I must admit that I'm almost envious to my friend who's using Cubase. Simply for the reason that I haven't found an equally effortless way to create drum beats as the GM mode in Cubase.
The ability to create multiple notes by simply dragging the cursor horizontally makes such a difference! Also the velocity map below the regular map makes everything easy. Logic just keeps stretching the length of an individual note. I know that in the Ultrabeat window you can do this, but I would really wanna do it i Logic's own map:)
Anyone know if this is possible in Logic? I am already familiar with the Step Edit Keyboard and Ultrabeat's Step Edit, so I'm not talking about them.
    Cheers!

Oh by the way, after some research i found these links that a lot of you might find very useful for creating drum tracks effectively and quickly:

I'm not home now so haven't tried myself yet, but boy am i eager to give them a shot!

  • Converting note mapping for addictive drums to use midi kit

My midikit is wrongly assigned for addictive drums. When I hit the hihat I get a crash and so on.
    the manual says:
If you want to use GM midi files, or connect an e-drum kit to AD, you need to convert the note mapping. In many hosts you can use a “drum map” to remap the notes from GM to AD. There are several drum maps available for free download in our User Area!
    Eh?
    Please help me.
    Timo

    Hi
    You have two possible solutions:
    1) In the drumkit controller, remap the MIDI notes transmitted to suit
    2) In Logic, create a Mapped Instrument object in the Environment, and sort out the MIDI Input/Output note mapping to suit. Then either:
connect this object between the Physical Input and the Sequencer Input objects onthe Clicks and Ports layer when you wish to record MIDI from your drum controller with AD (disconnect Mapped Instrument when you have finished with the drums).
    or
Cable the Mapped Instrument object directly to the Instrument Channel Strip (Mixer Layer) which has the AD plug. With the  correct Arrange track Click on the  Mapped Instrument object using the MIDI Thru tool to re-assign the Arrange track to the Mapped Instrument object.

  • Drum notation?

Where can i read about how i use logics drum notation? There is nothing in the manual, and only apple ads come up when i search "logic drum notation" in google!
I can't figure out what to do just by looking at it. I have made a track with some ultrabeat drums, and i have picked the "#drums" staff style. But i have many questions: why cant i place the hi hat "cross" where E would be on a G note staff as normal in drum notation? And how do i change or see where the drums are placed on the staff? Why cant a place notes on many of the lines in the staff? And how do i set a hihat as open or closed?
I don't understand where i am supposed to look for help, when there is nothing in the manual!
    Thanks in advance.

you will have to create a drum map style. An alternative idea, would be to copy the midi track to a new instrument, and use it only for score display, don't assign any audio to it. high light all the "e's" and move them to A#. Those will now display in the score correctly

  • Easy way to add more audiotracks??? + Environment midi/audio question???

    Hi!
Let's say, when I open a new project I have standard 24 audio tracks.
But when recording I see that I will need more, is there an easy and fast way to add more tracks?
As I see it now, I Have to run the Logic Setup Assistent, add more tracks (let's say 40). Reopen the project, go in the environment, create a new audio object for every track I want to add, double click it and assign the correct track to 'channel'. If I need to add 10 more tracks I have to go over these last steps 10 times. Am I missing some handy quick trick here?
Also, the second part of my question:
when I open the environment window, sometimes it only shows "midi" and the "GS instrument drum mapped" and some other times it shows "audio" and an "overview of my mixer". This seems to happen at random and I don't know why. The mixer view is what I want (especially when I need to add tracks as mentioned before), but when I get the midi view I don't know what to do to get the audio/mixer view. Any help?

    Ok,
There is a way so you wont have to do the 10 setups.
Run the Setup Assistant and when it asks how many
audio tracks you want, always tell it more than you
will possibly need. I use 101. I know I will probably
never use that many but they are already and waiting
in case I do need more. This way you dont have to do
anything except go to the track menu and select create
new or double click the arear below the last
track and what ever track is highlighted, a exact duplicate
will appear. Then you just click and hold on it to make it
whatever kind of track you need from the menu that appears.
This first answer takes care of the second question. Since you
dont need to go into the enviroment to hook up new tracks.
Just so you know if you click and hold on the name of the layer
Midi, instruments, clicks and ports or whatever another menu
will appear letting you choose what layer you want to go to.
    This is the easy way!

  • MIDI tracks and outboard keyboards -- this is a real puzzler for me!

I'm brand-new to Logic Express (as of last night!). I've been a Digital Performer guy for years (back before audio tracks for sequencers weren't even thought of, and MOTU was making just Performer 2.x), but I recently purchased a new 20" Intel iMac, thinking that the new DP would support the Intel chip. Turns out I was wrong. Since several of my friends really like Logic, I thought I'd take the plunge yesterday and purchase Logic Express 7.2.
    Here's my problem:
I can't seem to get Logic to recognize any of my keyboards. My set up is as follows: I have a MOTU Midi Time Piece AV (MTP AV) as a MIDI interface. On port 2, I have a Kurzweil PC88. On port 3, I have a Roland module. On port 4, I have a Korg Triton, etc. I have downloaded the latest MOTU driver that provides MacIntel support.
When I launch Apple's Audio MIDI Setup, my MTP AV and all my keyboards are recognized perfectly, along with their connections. When I went through Logic's Setup Assistant, the Setup Assistant recognized my keyboards.
However, when I open up a new Logic document, and I click-and-hold on the first MIDI track labeled "1 Grand Piano", none of my keyboards are recogized. When I click-and-hold, I get a pop-up menu that says (in part) "MIDI Instr.", with a sub-menu off to the right of it that says only "Drums Mapped" and "GM Device". There's no Korg Triton, no Kurzweil PC88, no Roland M-OC1, etc.
Granted, this is a totally new environment to me, so I'm hoping that I've just overlooked something simple.
Does anyone recognize this problem, and can you offer any advise?
    Thank you!

    Hi Kevin,
Have a look in the excellent tips for new users thread started by David Pye, or do a search on the Environment here, or in Help within Logic.
What you need to do is set up a new Multi Instrument in the Environment, in the Midi Instrument layer.
Select a new Mulit instrument for each keyboard. Select all the boxes so that none are crossed through. If you double click on the icon above the box you will see a box where you can enter patch names for banks within each device.
For this bit, and in fact for the whole lot, you may well find a specific environment for your devices at Swiftkick.com. Simply copy the patch names over, or open the environments and save them to your autoload as appropriate.
It sounds a bit complicated but once this is done you should be able to see your instruments when you hold the tack name as you are already doing.
    Best of luck.

  • Yet another Logic Vs.Pro Tools question. Please help!!

Hi guys! I just arrive to the world of mac a few days ago, and I couldn't be happier. Now it's time to purchase new audio gear, and I am torn between Logic Studio/Apogee interface, or the Digi 003. I've been a Sonar user for the past couple of years, and before that I was on Cubase.
I love Sonar, but I'm sick of PC's(hence the switch). I need something with good compositional/midi tools, but I also need powerful audio editing. One thing I love about Sonar is the ability to use non-destructive editing in the arrange window. Can the new logic do this? Currently I am leaning towards logic...but I still haven't made a decision. I definitely need drum programming ability, and I'm not sure if Pro Tools le even has a drum map? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Taking just the key points above, Logic will definitely fit the bill better. Logic seems to be a better compositional tool, although PT can also be used for that. Both do SOME non-destructive editing in the arrange windows. Protools has no drum editor at all.
However, PT is still better at audio editing.
It would depend on how much audio editing you plan on doing vs midi/composition.
The above poster is certainly in the ballpark about the add-ons you have to buy with PT just to equal the tools that come with Logic. I would say you'll probably have to spend at least another $1000 on plugin instruments and utility tools (CD burning/mastering) above the cost of PTLE software. Assume you will need at least the Music Production Toolkit in addition to PTLE. You will also want Toast Titanium to burn CDs unless you get Logic w/Waveburner.
The 003 will definitely not sound as good as the Apogee.
I've used PTLE since 1999 and it's great for recording and editing audio, but nothing special for writing and nothing special for midi.

  • Electronic Drumset MIDI Garageband standard drumkits problems

    Hi,
I have a Yamaha DTXPLORER drumset:
    http://www.yamaha-europe.com/yamahaeurope/uk/10_musical_instruments/40_drums/40_electronic_drums/08_dtxplorer/10_no _series/10dtxplorer/index.html
I have a simple MIDI interface connected between my Mac and the drumset.
Everything is communicating between Garageband and the drumset BUT the setup is not right when I try to play something. Some of the drums sounds like it should but when I hit the snare drum it sounds like a hi-hat. And when I change to another Garageband drum kit it can change to so something else.
How can I change the MIDI-setup so everything sounds like it should?
It has to be in Garageband as the different drumkits have different basic setups so the problem moves around when I switch.
And I want to hear what I am playing and not edit it afterwards...
    Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

In GB you dont have a "Learn" function, that I was hoping for. I have seen different drum plugins having that. That costs extra... But I really want to use the ones that comes with GB and this feature should be there. So if you had this Learn-function you could customize the different drums "position" so it fit the drumset you have. The electronic drumsets in cheaper today so actually a non-pro can actually afford it and but then as a user of GB will bump in to problems.
I have some tip to use Midipipe that hijack the MIDI-in and that you can change the map but I don't know how to do it in detail. And I want to do it in GB where you have different drum maps as you say and the save them to fit my drumset for the future...
